Who Is Responsible

...Who Is Responsible? “Hungry. Will work for food.” This is a sign that a handful of people see on a daily basis as they are driving down the streets, but that most ignore. In an age that questions whose problem the homeless population is, controversies arise over who should be taking care of these people. Homelessness is not a new concept in America. Having been around for over a century, the past few decades has become exceptionally worse. Homelessness is not something that is easily defined. Alex K. Rich and Geraldine Wagner tell their readers that most who study the problem of homelessness define the issue as “those who are forced to sleep in places not designated for sleeping.” Jennifer Bringle defines the homeless as people who do not have a “fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence” (4). However defined, the fact that they do not have a permanent residence is only the beginning of the problem. Although there are many controversies today surrounding the problem of homelessness and whether the government is responsible or not, the nation as a whole should take responsibility and work collectively to strive for an end to the problem. To some the way to end homelessness means leaving the change up to the homeless themselves. Critics today focus on the idea that people are homeless because of their own actions. In Ted Gottfried’s book Homeless: Whose Problem Is It, Ronald Reagan is quoted as saying, “The homeless . . . are homeless, you might say, by......

Greed by Who?

...Greed by Whom? English 1004 November 18, 2012 Greed by Who? September 15, 2012 the NHL owners decided they had enough and locked out the players after a new collective bargaining agreement could not be reached before this deadline. Under the direction of League Commissioner, Gary Bettman, this is the third work stoppage for the league. The last lock out was in 2004–05 when, all of the games that season were cancelled. In 1994-95, the league played forty eight instead of the normal eighty two games. In addition to reduced schedule no inter-conference games. Like most disagreements, revenue sharing is at the center of this current dispute. Revenue is in the NHL is earned from many different ways, such as merchandise sales, television contracts, sponsorships, and investments. Jamie Fitzpatrick (2012), a hockey writer from about.com reports, “Since 2005, league revenues have increased by an average of seven per cent every season”. Under the previous collective bargaining agreement (CBA), players received guaranteed share of 57% or $3.3 billion of hockey related revenues. The owners want to cut back and are offering the players association a 50/50 split of the revenue. Owners feel the players need to not only look at the revenue increase over the past few years, but also the cost of doing business has gone up much than the revenue increase has. Another aread of disagreement is that NHL rules currently don’t allow player to bring their families on the road......

Who Can and Who Can't

...Who Can… Who Can’t The main focus of the article is about other races using “the n-word”. The author talks about how African Americans are allowed to use the word with no problem, and how Puerto Ricans are accepted to use the word, but when a white person says it then it is completely out of line. The author other also states how the rap industry accepts the use of the word but, once again if a white person uses it, then they are considered “fake” The author asks multiple rappers in Chicago, why is it such a big deal when someone of a different race uses “the n-word” and what does it mean to them. Black rappers feel that it is disrespectful for white rappers to use the word because they feel that when White people say it, they say as if they are dominant. “ If some Spanish dude is like ‘nigga this’ ‘nigga that’ I don’t think he’s thinking ‘ You a nigga, and I’m a higher species,’ Whereas you hear that shit out of a white dude’s mouth, it goes right back to where it came from,” (Harkness, 136) Based off this statement, black people feel that white people can’t say the word because they created it, and it just brings to back to slavery days. “ They trapped, they grinding, they hard. Plus, they weren’t the people that enslaved us… The Caucasian folks enslaved us. So when they say the word nigger, or course it would offend us. “ Latino’s, in a black person’s mind has been through the same struggle as them. Therefore they are allowed to use the word. Who Cares

...Many photographic solutions have high chemical and biological oxygen demand (COD and BOD). These chemical wastes are often treated with ozone, peroxide or aeration to reduce the COD in commercial laboratories. Exhausted fixer and to some extent rinse water contain silver thiosulfate complex ions. They are far less toxic than free silver ion, and they become silver sulfide sludge in the sewer pipes or treatment plant. However, the maximum silver concentration in discharge is very often tightly regulated. Silver is also a somewhat precious resource. Therefore, in most large scale processing establishments, exhausted fixer is collected for silver recovery and disposal. Many photographic chemicals use non-biodegradable compounds, such as EDTA, DTPA, NTA and borate. EDTA, DTPA, and NTA are very often used as chelating agents in all processing solutions, particularly in developers and washing aid solutions. EDTA and other polyamine polycarboxylic acids are used as iron ligands in colour bleach solutions. These are relatively nontoxic, and in particular EDTA is approved as a food additive. However, due to poor biodegradability, these chelating agents are found in alarmingly high concentrations in some water sources from which municipal tap water is taken.[7][8] Water containing these chelating agents can leach metal from water treatment equipment as well as pipes. This is becoming an issue in Europe and some parts of the world.[citation needed] Another non-biodegradable......

The Who

...The Who Before enrolling in American Popular Music, I had decent background on a fair amount of bands and artists we have talked about in class, including, but not limited to, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, and The Eagles. These artists are some of my Dad’s favorite, so therefore I learned a lot about them from him; however, he has never been a fan of The Who. Therefore, I was rather excited when I was assigned a research paper on The Who; a band who I really knew nothing about before American Popular Music. In the following paper, I will provide details about The Who’s individual band members’ lives, as well as information in relation to the band in general. The Who had four main members: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. In addition to being the band’s guitarist, Pete Townshend took on the roll as the primary song writer. The most interesting fact I found about Townshend, is that he owns his own book publishing company. He actually published a book of his own called “Horse’s Neck” which consisted of a variety of short stories. Townshend has maintained a musical interest throughout his life, even after The Who broke up in 1983 (The Who Official Band Website). Roger Daltrey has always been a passionate musician; to the point where he even designed many of the bands guitars (The Who Official Band Website). Recently, Daltrey’s passion for music resurfaced. According to Mayer Nissim, a reporter for Digital Spy, “Roger Daltrey has confirmed that he...

Who Is Irish

...An Analysis of Who is Irish? by Carol Belanger In the United States, there are many immigrants from different countries and nationalities. It is probably the most ethnically diverse country in the world. Some people view it as a “melting pot” where a variety of cultures mix together and influence the overall culture. Others use the analogy of a quilt, woven by cloths from different colors and fabrics that comes out a whole piece. Despite this, gaps between different cultures still exist, especially for older immigrants, no matter how well they have assimilated. The cultural and life perspective of first generation Chinese immigrants are deeply rooted in China, even though some may have lived almost half of their lives here. Their offspring, the second generation, Chinese-Americans who grew up in the United States, hold different views than their parents. They have been Americanized just like the Chinese food at many restaurants in the United States. Because of this, the culture gap between these two generations is inevitable. In “Who is Irish”, the writer Gish Jen addresses the issues between a sixty-eight old Chinese born grandmother, who is the narrator, and her American born daughter, Irish American son-in-law-and granddaughter. As a permanent resident, the grandmother is not going anywhere, but she still feels uncomfortable with the cultural here. In the story, she ends up living with her son-in-law’s mother. The culture gaps in contemporary America are......

The history of Accounting dates-back several hundred years ago, “Accountants participated in the development of cities, trade, and the concepts of wealth and numbers. Accountants invented writing, participated in the development of money and banking, invented double entry bookkeeping that fueled the Italian Renaissance, saved many Industrial Revolution inventors and entrepreneurs from bankruptcy, helped develop the confidence in capital markets necessary for western capitalism, and are central to the information revolution that is transforming the global economy.” (G.Giroux) In an individual’s point-of-view Accounting is managing an account in all forms, money mostly; learning how to balance the check book is a common terminology for most ordinary people. Accounting can have a positive effect and can be beneficial to a business, even personally, but in business, Accounting can help identify and minimize shrinkage in profit, and also maximize profit-growth. Personal level of Accounting can also help......
