Whitney Elizabeth Houston, known to many as Nippy, was born on Aug. 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey. Houston began singing at a young age in her church choir within her hometown and released her debut album at the age of (22). During this time, she scored three #1 singles, delivered four more #1 titles, and earned her first Grammy. When Whitney married singer Bobby Brown in 1992, her career got off track. She made a major comeback, which probably would have been one of many if not for her early departure, with one of her #1 titles: “I Look to You”. Houston died on Feb. 11, 2012.
Early Life/ Influences Whitney Houston, born on Aug. 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey, almost seemed destined from birth to become a singer. Her mother Cissy Houston, her cousin Dionne Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin are all legendary figures in American Gospel and Soul Music. Whitney’s mother Cissy was the choir’s Minister at New Hope Baptist Church, and it was there that young Whitney got her start. By the time she turned fifteen, Whitney was often performing with her mother and trying to get a record deal of her own. Around the same time, she was discovered by a photographer who was amazed by her natural beauty. She soon became a well-known teenage model and one of the first women to appear on the cover of Seventeen Magazine. When Whitney turned nineteen, she was discovered in a night club by the renowned Clive Davis of Arista Records, who signed her immediately and took her career to new heights.
Interests and Hobbies Even though Whitney enjoyed modeling, singing was her true love and passion until the day she departed. She loved singing above modeling and acting. An additional #1 aspect in her life, even above singing and acting was her only child and daughter Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown. Whitney has always been a committed singer and actor, but an even more committed mother. Even when things were rocky and complicated within her life and career, she always made sure that her daughter was safe, stabled, content, and secured; mentally, financially, and emotionally. One of the things Houston loved the most in life was traveling, spending time, and setting good examples for her daughter, even during her weak and hard times.
Challenges
Throughout her life and career, Whitney suffered with long-term drug and alcohol abuse. The fact that her husband Bobby Brown was also a drug and alcohol abuser, totally contributed to the couple’s failed marriage. Through this troubling time, Whitney’s drug and alcohol abuse increased, her and Bobby’s marriage detteriated , and their daughter had to spend substantial amounts of time with Whitney’s brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Patricia Houston temporarily. Not until she parted with Bobby, reconnected with her daughter, and sought professional help, things started to look up in both her personal and professional life. Throughout her life, Whitney continued to struggle with drug and alcohol abuse until she departed in 2012.
Contributions to Society During 1987, after the release of “Whitney”, Houston appeared at a concert for Nelson Mandela’s birthday and founded The Whitney Houston Foundation for Children, a nonprofit organization that funds projects to help needy children all over the world. Whitney’s voice within itself was and still is a gift that just keeps on giving.
Personality Traits and Evidence By 1992, Whitney Houston was on top of the world, but her life became very complicated, very quickly. This year she married R &B singer Bobby Brown, formerly of New Edition, after a three year engagement. At first the marriage was passionate and loving, but things turned sour as the decade passed, and both Brown and Houston battled substance abuse and showed increasingly erratic behavior; especially in public. As time progressed, the public began to notice the change in behaviors dealing with the both of them: When Brown and Houston were clean and sober; they acted humane. When they both were intoxicated and using; their behaviors were wild and erratic. In addition to their behavior, the couple has also been caught numerous times in possession of drugs and narcotic. Only Brown has ever been arrested and charged with drug and alcohol charges.
Other Interesting Facts In spite of growing personal troubles, Whitney Houston continued to progress in her career, crossing over successfully into acting in 1992. In addition to her debuts on television shows such as Oprah, Diane Sawyer, and Merv Griffith, Whitney also performed in five movies: “The Bodyguard”, ”Waiting to Exhale”, “The Preacher’s Wife”, “Cinderella”, and “Sparkle”; which gained her many Grammies and helped her with the distribution of hundreds of millions of records sold within her lifetime.
Death and Legacy Before her passing in 2012, Houston worked on the musical and film “Sparkle”. She had reportedly been approached to join the singing competition “The X Factor” as a judge, but died before she could put her expertise on this project. Whitney Houston died on Feb. 11, 2012, in Los Angeles. Houston had been seen out in the days before her death, including at one of the pre-Grammy Award parties. According to the coroner’s report, Whitney’s official cause of death was accidental drowning. The effects of heart disease and cocaine found in her system were contributing factors. With her passing, the music world has lost one of its most legendary stars.

Zoning in Houston

...In Focus: No Zoning in Houston? To begin to evaluate the effect of zoning codes, it is important to keep some of the characteristics of Houston in the back of your mind: the city has a growing economy, booming population, and urban sprawl, but it also filled with air pollution, traffic congestion, and a somewhat ineffective method of public transportation. It is unlike many other cities for a variety of reasons, but in regards to urban politics, its biggest difference is a lack of a zoning code. Zoning codes are typically used to keep developments at a low-density, but even without them, Houston has a sprawling, low-density urban structure. Zoning is also used to protect property values, but some of the most expensive homes in downtown Houston are very near to commercial developments. If there are no zoning codes, what promotes such success similarity to other large, zoned cities? After reading the research on this topic, most views on which come through local media sources, it is apparent that the effects of zoning are a very contested issue. Many individuals argue that the lack of zoning gives Houstonians a necessary right to private property usage, while others would like more regulation in city development. Additionally, voting against zoning laws allows the opportunity to test alternatives to zoning laws. The city has tried to pass zoning laws in 1948, 1962, and 1993, but each time, they have failed to get close to a majority of the citizens’ votes, even in small......

It was his genius to observe what people needed, and to provide it” (PBS), even from an early age Whitney was able to innovate to make peoples lives easier. There are many people that are concerned about their children going to school safely because there’s so much gang activity in Houston. Many of the children’s parents are concerned about the influence of gang activity that is constantly rising. I have seen twelve year old kids being influenced to be in a gang or either gang affiliated already. Communities are terrified to even let their children go outside and play, thinking that they are going to get shot because of everyday shootings constantly happening. The gang violence has to come to an end, but how can Houston stop the gang violence in communities? What can the city possibly do to decrease gang activity? The Police department could force officers to become stricter against gang activity and violence. The community can support no gang violence. Houston could have better activities within the community to keep children and people away from trouble. Schools can have stricter programs against gang activity. The community could create programs that has ex-gang members influence the youth no to take the wrong path in life. It’s so many ways that could reduce the gang activity in Houston. Houston Food Drive

...afternoon at 1pm, I had just arrived on time at the main entrance of the “Houston Food Bank”. The food banks sliding doors parted as I walked in the direction of a young lady who was smiling and taking everyone’s queue code to enter as a volunteer. As I approached my 1pm group, our team leader was giving everyone insight about the food bank and a guided tour. Our group walked all the way to the doors in the back where we started unwrapping large pallets of food in boxes and started to break them down and sort them. Every single minute I was there, I witnessed everybody performing with positive attitudes. Everyone was willing to listen to one another’s advice and ideas as well as always engaging in the work. Service learning is a method of teaching that combines classroom instruction with meaningful community service. This form of learning emphasizes critical thinking and personal reflection while encouraging a heightened sense of community, civic engagement, and personal responsibility. Volunteerism is the reliance of volunteers working towards helping a specific social, or educational duty in the community. This is similar to community service, because by definition of both terms, both groups of people take time out to help a community. Community service differs from volunteerism by catering to organizations which does not just benefit a community, but also an institution. Having been founded in 1982, the Houston Food Bank provides food to more than 500 hunger relief......

The Article Is Written by Mike Whitney

...The article is written by Mike Whitney in 2014 and is a long rand about how the American Dream is dead and the government is corrupt. Finding background information about this author was not an easy task. On his website you find a large number of articles that all seem to have the same theme; criticizing the modern society and the ‘evil’ capitalistic country of America. However, is it really true that there are just no way to get yourself out of poverty or climb the social ladder? That it would be completely impossible to get out of poverty - is not a true statement, if you ask me. if you work hard, finish High School and College there is a 72% chance that you will join the middleclass . The Article also says that if you end up in the middleclass you are most likely to spend the rest of your life working a “shitty” middleclass job that you don’t like. But is the US really at fault? Of course, a huge part of the middleclass will continue to stay in the middleclass because not everyone can become a billionaire. In today’s world, it is not an easy task to become super successful in any country, and just because you work the same job for a long time and work hard, it does not mean that you automatically become CEO. It is not that simple anymore; you will have to consider many aspects like social skills, creativity, getting to know the right people, luck etc. I am not saying that the capitalistic world we live in is fair, but there is not much we can do about it - or maybe......

Charles Houston

...| Charles Houston Recreation Center | | | Pierre Beattie | 5/17/2015 | Professor Lori Bufka DeVry University Someone a long time ago told me that it takes a village to raise a child. Over the years I have realized that this not only is true, but it has great significance in everyone’s future. There are many obstacles in today’s society where there are failing schools, underpaid teachers, and misinformation to where children are in many ways forgotten. I hope that in the near future there would be more and more adults who will step up to the plate and attempt to lead America’s youth. One such individual is Scott Carter, the leader of the Charles Houston recreation center in Washington, D.C. He is a living example of someone who sees the need for positive adults in the community and wishes to make a positive impact in the lives of not just the young but the old as well. It has come to my attention that the Charles Houston recreation center will be closing its doors in a matter of a couple weeks because the District of Columbia refuses to properly fund the facility because of budget cuts. That means that hundreds of local area youths will no longer have a place that they can call a safe haven when they get out of school or in their leisure time. The Charles Houston recreation center has been around for over 20 years and has over the years formed a basketball and football team. They also hold rally’s where the homeless can get a meal and other special......

Elise has a “growing hand” in her garden work and her husband wishes she could do the same with growing fruit. Of course there’s no doubt in Elisa mind that she could. But, It seems to be that Henry is being sarcastic and joking around with her. It strikes me as him being almost smart and arrogant. Henry explains to Elisa about the strange men . He suggested a fight but Elisa is very hesitate about fights, and refuses to go to a fight. Annotated Bibliography of Whitney Houston

...Annotated Bbliography of Whitney Houston Ammons, Kevin, and Nancy Bacon. Good Girl, Bad Girl: An Insider's Biography of Whitney Houston. Secaucus, NJ: Carol Publ. Group, 1996. Print. This was an unauthorized autobiography of Whitney Houston by Kevin Ammons who observed Whitney Houston’s life while dating her publicist Regina Brown. He observed a glamorous woman who let success turn her into a very troubled woman. In the autobiography Ammons talked about how Whitney had a close friend by the name of Robyn Crawford and that her mother, Cissy Houston felt that it was “unnatural” for the two women to be so close. Ammons also mentions how upset Robyn would become when Whitney gained male attention. Robyn was upset when Bobby Brown sent Whitney four hundred roses, and at the 1991 Super Bowl where Whitney sung the national anthem and M.C. Hammer appeared, him and Whitney went off by themselves, talking and laughing. Ammons also includes in this autobiography that his girlfriend at the time stated to him that one of the condition in working for Whitney was not to bring up Robyn. These statements mentioned in Ammons autobiography tends to make the media and readers believe that Whitney Houston had lesbian affairs with Robyn Crawford, and this is what caused her to develop a drug problem that soon resulted in an early death. Houston Astros

...MLB’s International Expansion Thomas Cyhan June 25, 2012 Nina Campanicki   The Major League Baseball team, Houston Astros was founded in 1962, known as the Colt .45s. However the process in creating this team took nearly a decade before they were able to throw out their first pitch as a MLB franchise. MLB refused consideration on multiple occasions to expand the National League from eight to ten teams until other potential owners would form a new baseball league called the Continental League to compete against the National League. Starting baseball operations in 1962, the Colt .45s changed their name in 1965 to the Houston Astros when Judge Roy Hofheinz became sole owner of the team. Houston was renamed the Astros to honor the city’s location as the nation’s space station. Since the Astros were created they have played in three stadiums; Colt Stadium from 1962 to 1964, the Astrodome from 1965 to 1999 and in their current home Minute Maid Park from 2000 to present time. Houston has only made it to the World Series once back in 2005 by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, but lost to the Chicago White Sox in four games. The Astros have had some success in the late 90’s but still have not won a World Series. The team was sold in 2011 to Jim Crane for $610 million dollars. Originally the price tag for the franchise and 45% of the team’s new regional contract was $680 million but the team was discounted because in 2013 the team will be moving from the National League to......
