Where Oh Where is the Rain?? The drought of 2012 has grown to epic, never before seen size proportions, and is taking its toll on whole lot of people all over the country. Is their relief in sight? Not in the next few months, experts are saying. The drought of 2012 has caused many problems for our farmers, scorched millions of acres of forest and grasslands, and has President Obama scrambling to get relief to those in need. Just how big is this drought we are experiencing? According to the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM), it’s the largest drought ever recorded in their 13 years they have been monitoring drought conditions. According to the USDM, 62.9 percent of the contiguous U.S. was experiencing moderate to exceptional drought at the end of July. This is an increase of about 6.9 percent compared to the end of June. The maximum value of 63.9 percent reached on July 24, 2012 is the current record holding mark in the 13 year history of the USDM. The percent area of the country in the worst drought categories (extreme to exceptional drought) doubled, from 10 percent last month to 22 percent this month. The other major drought monitoring index is the Palmer Drought Severity Index. This index has been tracking drought conditions for all of the 20th century, much longer than the USDM. The Palmer Drought Severity Index states that about 57 percent of the contiguous U.S. was experiencing moderate-to-extreme drought. The last time drought was this extensive was way back in December of 1956 when about 58 percent of the nation was in moderate-to-extreme drought. The following map is produced in partnership between the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This map shows just how extensive the size of the drought is currently. Two of the biggest contributors to this drought is the lack of precipitation and record warmth we have experienced dating all the way back to August of 2011. The biggest impact of the two has been the temperatures. According to the NOAA, the August 2011-July 2012 period was the warmest 12-month period of any 12 months on record in the contiguous U.S., narrowly surpassing the record broken just last month for the July 2011-June 2012 period by .07 degrees Fahrenheit. The nationally-averaged temperature of 56.1 degrees Fahrenheit was 3.3 degrees above the long term average. Every single state across the contiguous U.S. had warmer than average temperatures for the period, except Washington, which was near normal. The tail end of this 12 month average is where the affects have been felt the most. The average temperature for the contiguous U.S. during July was 77.6 degrees. 3.3 degrees above the 20th century average, marking the warmest July and all-time warmest month of record for the nation in a period of record that dates back to 1895. The previous warmest July for the nation was July 1936, when the average U.S. temperature was 77.4 degrees. As mentioned earlier the other big impact of the drought is the lack of precipitation the country is receiving. Some impressive precipitation numbers again given to us by the NOAA say the first seven months if 2012 were drier than average, ranking as the 15th driest January-July on record. Below average precipitation totals were observed for a large portion of the country, with 12 states having January-July precipitation totals among their ten driest. Although not quite as impressive as our temperature extremes, when you couple it together it produces this extreme drought we are experiencing. All of this extreme temperatures and above average dryness has left crops and livestock devastated from the Great Plains to the Midwest. Research done by the USDA shows that the drought has rapidly increased in severity over the past month. As of August 1st, more than half of the counties had been designated as disaster areas in 2012, mainly due to drought. Severe or greater drought is impacting 65 percent of the cattle production, and about 75 percent of the corn and soybean production. More than 80 percent of the acres of major field crops planted in the United States are covered by Federal crop insurance, which can help to mitigate yield or revenue losses for covered farms. The USDA says the ongoing drought is expected to destroy or damage a portion of the field corn crop in a number of States, an increase in the farm price of corn has already occurred and additional increases will depend on the extent of the drought. Also of note, we will likely see impacts within two months for beef, pork, poultry and dairy (especially fluid milk) later this year and into 2013. An Obama Team is attempting to help drought stricken farmers. Dan Steinkruger is the state executive director for the Nebraska Farm Service Agency. He wants to make sure to get the message across that President Obama has called the U.S. governments approach to drought assistance an “all hands-on-deck effort,” and he has directed USDA and other federal agencies to find additional ways to help those impacted by the drought. Dan says that the President has convened ongoing meetings of the White House Rural Council to ensure that all federal agencies are doing everything they can to help. The biggest challenge that the president faces today in carrying out the relief effort is the fact that the 2008 Farm Bill disaster assistance programs expired at the end of last year. These programs were implemented under Obama and prior to expiring delivered more than 400,000 disaster assistance payments totaling more than $4 billion to U.S. farmers and ranchers. Another big impact of this year’s major drought is the fires being experienced in Western United States. The warm and dry conditions over a large portion of the country were associated with ideal wildfire conditions. Over 2 million acres were burned nationwide during the month of July alone due to wildfires, the USDM report says. Nearly a half a million acres above average, and the fourth most in the 13 year period of record keeping. A couple of the notable fires this summer was the Waldo Canyon fire that burned 347 homes and killed 2 people in Colorado Springs. The other being the Long Draw fire which burned 557,648 acres in Oregon and is by the largest fire in Oregon’s history. Wary firefighters all over the country are hoping for some relief. While not exactly the news the firefighters in the west were looking for, other parts of the drought stricken areas could have received some much needed relief. The rain from the remnants of Hurricane Isaac could have helped some of the hardest hit drought areas of the Mississippi River. Albeit the rains have appeared to help in the short term relief only, experts say it’s not enough for long-term relief for the vital waterway that is at its lowest level since 1988. Marty Pope, a hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Jackson, Missouri said that Isaac dumped rain on areas that feed the lower Mississippi, but it’s too little to bring the river back to normal levels for this time of year. Still, he said any relief helps and Isaac kept the river from falling even more. As for the rest of the drought ridden area, the NOAA outlook calls for above-average temperatures across the majority of the country for the August to October period. The outlook follows on the heels of the hottest January-July period on record for the contiguous United States that was discussed earlier. As far as precipitation is concerned? Again the NOAA forecast is bleak. The outlook outlines a bull’s-eye over the Corn Bekt where precipitation is expected to be below average. The report notes that “the self-perpetuation of regional drought conditions, with very dry soils and very limited evapotranspiration (the combination of water loss due to evaporation form ground sources and transpiration from plants), tends to inhibit widespread development of existing thunderstorm complexes. “ Jim Angel, climatologist from Illinois says “I kind of have given up hope for short-term relief.” The massive drought of 2012 is one of the largest droughts our country has ever seen. The impacts are effecting everyone all over the country from farmers and ranchers to firefighters and everyday normal household. With the short term forecast looking bleak everyone will start to wonder just how epic this drought of 2012 could become.…...

Where Are You Going Where Have You Been

...How many young girls do you know who have had their innocence taken from them? A fifteen year old girl named Connie is forced to grow up entirely too fast by a man named Arnold Friend. Without meaning any harm, she flaunts herself around town acting like a mature woman, showing the world she thinks she ready to grow up. Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” illustrates how evil and manipulative one man is to a not so innocent Connie. Although Connie thinks she wants her independence as a woman, Arnold Friend, who is not who he seems to be, destroys her youthful innocence and introduces her to a world of evil. Connie begins to find independence in her appearance. She is constantly admiring herself in the mirror and being scolded for it by her mother. She tries to make herself sexually attractive in search of her own independence (SparkNotes Web). Connie goes out with her friends and flaunts her beauty and body, making herself look interested in older men; she thinks she is doing no harm when she is flirting. Like most teenagers, Connie wants to express her independence by going places alone with her friends. Being only fifteen, she is not able to drive, so she is dependent on the older people in her life. Where Are You Going and Where Have You Been?

...Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? In the story “Where are you going, where have you been” by Joyce Oates is about a beautiful young girl, Connie, that is trying to grow up too fast. She obsesses over her looks, friends, music, and day dreams about boys all day. She gets great pleasure in the fact that many boys of all ages find her very attractive. This though gets her in a lot of trouble with a boy name Arnold. This boy puts on a fake façade to get Connie to come to him. He manipulates her and deceives her. Arnold friend could also be interpreted as “Arch fiend” suggesting that he may be the devil. Many things that the author Joyce suggest leads the reader to believe that he may be the devil. For one his pale skin and his hair is wild, almost as though he is wearing a wig and hiding some horns underneath. When he walks he wobbles almost suggesting that he may have hooves as feet, just like the devil. Demon or not, however, his strangely mismatched appearance adds to the threatening quality of his calm voice and seemingly gentle coaxing as he tries to convince Connie to come outside. Connie at first is strangely attracted to Arnold in a very dangerous way. He is a very attractive, sexy older man that is showing some interest in her. He is also very alluring to her. Something about him keeps her interested. He offers to take her away from her very unhappy life and give her a better one in a field with flowers and sunshine. Soon though he beings to make threats and......

Where Is the Love

...WHERE IS THE LOVE? LACK OF COMMUNICATION CAN LEAD TO RELATIONSHIP TRAUMA Effective communication shapes a relationship. Effective communication enables a relationship to survive and thrive. Without communication, a relationship has a very slim chance of surviving. However, communication is more than just spoken words. Effective and true communication spans far beyond the spoken words. Most relationships fail because there is a lack of effective communication. To hear and to have your voice heard without hurting one another is what effective communication should be. When communication breaks down in a relationship no one feels acknowledged. Lack of communication can quickly escalate and can lead to arguments, loneliness, inappropriate relationships, and dissolution of the relationship. I am not listening to you! Your stupid and you do not listen to me! These are some of the milder things that are said during an argument. The issue at hand could have been very easily solved if communication was involved and each person involved listened to one another rather than talking at one another. Soon the tension builds, and the debate is becoming more heated. Finally, the unsettled issues and lack of communicating leads to more tension and harsh words. During an argument, each person is yelling and blaming each other. Most times during a disagreement or argument, you say things that you will later regret. If you do not know how to communicate effectively, the arguing......

Where Is Winky?

...Where Is Winky? Where Is Winky? She Is Gone. She Is Gone. Without certain characters, a story loses its appeal. Unfortunately, J. K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire loses some of its luster when transferred to film. One of the reasons the movie does not live up to the novel’s greatness is that notable characters disappear. Among the characters who make unexplained departures are two house elves: Dobby, who is introduced in an earlier novel and a previous movie, and Winky, who is supposed to make her first appearance here. Although the movie is worth watching, loss of these characters makes it less appealing than it could have been. Dobby gains the reader’s affection when he explains the difficult life of a house elf in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. His return in the fourth novel renews his appeal, but he is denied the chance to impress by not having a role in the movie. After gaining his freedom in the books, Dobby reappears in Harry’s life as an employee at Hogwarts with his friend Winky in tow. According to Dobby, Dobby has traveled the country for two whole years, sir, trying to find work! … But Dobby hasn’t found work, sir, because Dobby wants paying now! … But most wizards doesn’t want a house-elf who wants paying, miss. ‘That’s not the point of a house-elf,’ they says, and they slammed the door in Dobby’s face! Where to Live

...Where will you live? Most everyone will ask that question at some-point in his or her life. Will it be the urban life of the big city, filled with its tall buildings, loud neighborhoods, busy streets, and never-ending projects? It might be that that is more than one might want if that is the case, there is the serenity of the suburbs, which offer spacious housing, peaceful surroundings, fresh air, and plenty of nature. Both urban and suburban areas offer people different choices in lifestyles, from the houses and communities they live in, to the noise and activities around them. The cost and size of housing differ greatly from the inner city's high-rise apartments or houses, to those of a spacious urban setting. On average, the cost of the dwelling of comparable size will cost more in the city than that of the suburbs. For example, to buy a 3-bedroom home that is around 1300sf in the city may cost about $148,000, while renting would be around $1,600 a month. To buy or rent a house of similar size in the suburbs will be around $100,000 to buy, and $1,000 to rent per month. 'Estimates were biased on one city and its suburbs, in one state, and will vary from state to state, and city to city. One should be aware of any additional cost that may be needed when making their decision, such as, property taxes, gas or transportation expenses, and any other bills. Size is another factor one should think about; seldom would you find a place in the city that can handle a family with......

Where Have You Been Where Are You Going

...Ashland Rice Ryan Brown ENG 113 9/5/14 We have all been told about signs from God at some point in our life. It could be a person, certain place or thing that is sending this sign. In the short story, "Where have you been, where are you going?"  By Joan Carol Oates, Connie is the main character. Connie seems to con herself, for example, she met a guy named Arnold Friend at a restaurant and he shows up at her house one Sunday afternoon. Connie at first does not know who it is and then once she realizes who it is, she does not go straight out of the door with him, it takes her a while to actually goes off with him. “She pretended to fidget, chasing flies away from the door” (208). Her(Connie) name goes along with her personality great and this situation.   Where they first met, the restaurant is shaped like an old church and the background music is like that of a church sermon (206). The author uses this as a sign from God to Connie to warn her about Arnold but she does not realize it. It does not even dong on her that what’s really going on. In reality, Arnold is trying to figure out who Connie really is.   Later on, Oates describes how Arnold is dressed with great detail. A mask, dark clothes, and items stuffed into his boots to make him look taller. The way he is describing, it’s a little weird and creepy. “Tight faded jeans stuffed into black scuffed boots, a belt that pulled his waist in…”(208). I believe that Arnold is some sort of the devil, Satan. In the text,......

Where Are You Going Where Have You Been.

...Symbolism of “Screen Door” “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, is packed with symbols that are very important to the meaning of the short story. There are several important symbols in the story that eventually leads up to Connie’s decision to give herself to Arnold. One of the crucial symbols in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” is the screen door of Connie’s house. The screen door symbolizes Connie's transition from a teenager to a mature woman that is accepting her fate. Throughout the story Connie is scared to open the door and go outside, the closest she gets is when the boys first pull up and she “hung[s] out the screen door, [with] her toes curling down off the step” (Oates 508). Connie knows that Arnold won’t come in the house because he tells her several times, “I’m not coming in that house after you” (Oates 513). So in a way she feels comforted by the screen door that is separating them. The screen door is a boundary between Connie and Arnold, Connie stands inside the house as Arnold stands on the front porch with his arms open. If Connie opens the screen door to go out with Arnold she is excepting her fate but if she keeps the screen door shut and stays inside, she remains the fearful young teenager who is not ready to leave. By the end of the story Connie has made up her mind, “She put her hand against the screen door. She watched herself push the door slowly open as if she were safe back somewhere in the other doorway,...

...“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Summary In the short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” author Joyce Carol Oates presents the main character a fifteen year old girl named Connie who’s life is all about being pretty. Connie all ways casted two sides to herself. Her appearance and mannerisms would be displayed one way at home with her family, and entirely different when she was not. Often Connie and her friends would go to a shopping plaza, although they would wander across to a drive-in restaurant, which was a hangout for many of the adolescents. There one night Connie caught the eye of a boy with black hair in a gold convertible. The next day Connie was home alone, while her family was at a barbeque when she heard someone pulling into her driveway. She looked out the window to find that it was the boy with the black hair and gold convertible, which she had seen the prior night. She went to the screen door where the black hair boy approached her. He introduced himself as Arnold Friend and invites her to go for a ride. She replies no and Arnold starts to reveal that he knows much more about Connie than she is aware of. Where There Is a Way

...Where there is a will , there is a way `If there's a will, there's a way' is one motto I would like to make my own. The saying means that if anyone was determined enough to get something done, that person would always find a way to do it. . In other words nothing is impossible in this world provided it is backed by a strong will, constant efforts and unshakable faith. I believe that determination is the fighting spirit of a person. Without determination, a person would tend to give up too easily in getting what she or he wants. Man is different from other living beings. His desires are innumerable and ever increasing. He undertakes a number of activities in order to satisfy his desires. But in our practical life we see that all our desires are not fulfilled . A close examination will reveal that we did not make sustained efforts to fulfil those wishes .If a student is lack of determination for his examination, he cannot get the higher education .This motto is also true for the students .They say that matriculation exam is not easy at all .But the reason why some students fail in the examination is not that the examinations are difficult to pass. In fact they do not possess the determination and work hard for their objectives. A student can get the distinctions if he has a strong desire to do so. And I also have a constant desire for my coming matriculation exam. I study my lessons and homework regularly, attend my classes punctually and do the exercises in my free-time .I......

And Then There Where Three

...My wife’s mom and sister came from our hometown to be there with us so they came and went all day. They calmed nerves and also got on some nerves. I watched all day as my wife labored on like a champ. A little after 11pm my wife’s doctor comes into the room with about 4 nurses telling us that our baby was in distress and they had to get him out now. The next few minutes were a blur as the nurses were running around, prepping my wife for a cesarean. I don’t remember much of the time from when they all came into the room to the time they wheeled her out of the birthing suite other than getting dressed in scrubs. I was so nervous and scared that my mother in law had to show me how to put them on. They rushed us off to the operating room where I had to wait outside the door while they finished prepping my wife for surgery. It was only a few minutes, but I sat out there so long I was afraid they had forgotten to come and get me. When they brought me into the operating room they had already started the surgery. I should have kept my eyes on the wall like the nurse told me to. I sat by my wife’s head waiting on those 3 little words “It’s a boy” and to hear his first cries. That was the moment that I became a father of a 7lb 14oz little boy. That was the moment I understood the comment “wait till you have one of your own.” He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. He had dark hair and dark eyes just like me. He had my wife’s nose. Where Is the Message

... oooo child things'll get brighter. Although most of the song is about doing better, it also gives a message to men to protect and love the women of the world instead of disrespecting them. Tupac also had a very strong verse directed against the government policy, “They got money for wars but can’t feed the poor”. This verse is what most poets do not stress enough, the faults in government.             Another song that exposes the governments faults is Eminem’s “Mosh” released eleven years after “Keep your head up”. This song is being straightforward the message he wanted the listeners to understand. The beginning of the song starts off with children reading the pledge of allegiance, initiating the thought of government when listening. A verse where Eminem tells his listeners that he wants to show them the corrupt ways of the government is “I spit it once, refuel, re-energize, and rewind, I give sight to the blind, my insight through the mind”. He later on says “I say to fight; you take it as I'mma whip someone's ass” which is showing that he wants people not to literally fight. He means to fight the system, not person to person. The following verse proves this when he says “If you don't understand, don't even bother to ask,” He wants all who listen to him and get the song’s meaning to fight for their rights. In Tan’s “Mosh Analysis”; “Carry on, give me hope, give me strength, Come with me and I won't steer you wrong, Put your faith and your trust as I guide us through the......
