Ways to Reduce College Tuition In recent discussions of college tuition, a controversial issue has been how to reduce the tuition fees of colleges. On the one hand, some argue that colleges need high tuition to help pay for staff and maintenance. From this perspective, a college’s main priority is to make sure that the administrators and professors are properly paid and that there is enough money to fund classes. On the other hand, however, others argue that expensive tuition will discourage students from pursuing higher education and will burden the government with providing financial aid. In the words of one of this view’s main proponents, “People are paying way too much for way too little education” (McCluskey). According to this view, the education that colleges provide is not worth as much as it costs. In sum, the issue is to find a way to reduce college tuition. The cost of college is becoming an issue all across America. With the current state of the economy, the percent of unemployed workers and the cost of college can seem like a far-fetched goal. Many people who may not receive a scholarship or enough government funding may not be able to attend college. This is a big issue because having a college background is becoming an important factor in the business world today but, the expensive tuition discourages students from pursuing higher education. There is overwhelming evidence that colleges need to restructure the way they are ran because tuition prices are increasing at a rapid rate causing changes in the way students fund their education and in the way the government provides educational subsidies. According to a 2011 College Board report, students at four-year private colleges have the most expensive total cost of attendance: Factoring in tuition, fees, and room and board, the price for the 2011-2012 school year at the average private institution…...

Injustice of Alabama Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program

...Injustice of Alabama Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program One injustice currently affecting my community, my family, and many other families throughout the state of Alabama is the Alabama Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program (PACT). Instead of maintaining a “college fund” savings account at the bank or investing in stocks or bonds, many parents and grandparents “were sold on PACT and its assurance that they were paying tomorrow’s tuition costs with today’s dollars” (White, 3). So, they “decided to play it safe with guaranteed tuition for their children and grandchildren when they reached college age with a plan that was backed by the State of Alabama” (White, 3). Now, those parents and grandparents who had the foresight to plan ahead and secure the future education of their children and grandchildren by sacrificing to purchase PACT Plans are being told that education is in jeopardy and is no longer guaranteed (White, 1). The Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program was originally started in 1990 when then State Treasurer George Wallace, Jr. and Lt. Governor Jim Folsom, Jr. sold the Legislature on the idea. (Rawls, 1). The two-decade old PACT program allowed families to prepay tuition by buying contracts when their children were young. (Rawls, 3). The state invested much of the money that parents paid into the program in stocks to generate enough money to cover the cost of four-year tuition at a state university by the time the child finished high school...

Online College: the Better Way to Education

...Online College: The Better Way to Higher Education Ollie St Jules Devry University The Need and Want for Online Schools With all the things going on in an adult’s life, school should not make it more complicated. However the longer the person waits to attend college the harder it seems to work into their daily lives. This is where I believe online learning comes into play. Choosing a college is never easy, but before you pick the specific school you want to attend, you must first decide whether you want to pursue an education at an online university or a traditional college. Online education like everything else has its pros and cons. I’m not saying that online courses are for everyone but they are very beneficial in my life. With me being a full time parent and employee I find that online education is the best solution for continuing your education on your terms. Online education has many benefits that lead me to recommend this option to you. It has been shown to have better success rates, it’s convenient and flexible, it cost less to attend, and it also opens you to the new technologies that are being used in nearly every occupation. One of the top reasons I would recommend online learning would have to be the success rate that is garnering. Beginning around 2000, several studies, including meta-studies (review and analysis of hundreds of studies selected for their rigor), began to find significant differences in favor of online learning. These studies......

B) Is Maximum Wage Legislation the Best Way to Reduce Unequal Distribution of Income?

...legislation could help reduce unequal distribution for several reasons. The main reasons is due to the simple fact that if the people at the top of the pay chart were to have caps placed on their incomes, then their incomes would most likely fall to this cap or below it and therefore the difference between the top and lowest incomes would be reduced. This would be a good way of reducing unequal distribution of income because unlike a minimum wage this legislation would be unlikely to cost firms money but in-turn save them money. This is because the firms would gain the surplus of the money already being paid to employees in comparison to the cap whereas a minimum wage can sometimes mean that firms will have to pay their lower paid employees more in order to match the wage. However maximum wage distribution could also lead to an increase of unequal distribution of income. This is because assuming ceteris paribus and the fact that there is no minimum wage, firms may decide to lower the wages of their lower paid employees. This is because placing a cap on wages could lead to a decrease in competiveness. Firms often use higher wages as way to compete with their competitors in gaining the best employees for their labour force and therefore if an industry was to lower the pay of the bottom end of employees they would be able to offer larger pay increases and make a lower wage seem more lucrative. Another reasons a maximum wage maybe an effective way to reduce unequal......

Tuition

...Tuition Reimbursement Report: Financial aid from employers is looked upon as a major benefit (or perk) offered for positions within the company. There is an opportunity for both the employee and company to benefit from additional educational experiences, which is why this benefit has become such as big thing when people are looking for jobs. Employers typically will offer up the financial funding to support an employee’s desire for educational advancement, and will not require any repayment of the money. A common trend for companies is to have the employees pay for the courses and materials up front, and then reimburse the money (or at least a portion) at the completion of the course, or semester. Some companies only reimburse a portion of the money at the completion of a course, in order to hold a sort of commitment with the employee to complete the degree. Once the employee completes the full degree, the “withheld amount” is then reimbursed over the course of a year or two. This is done in order to avoid employees from gaining a degree for free from one company and then leaving to work elsewhere. The tuition reimbursement program is typically overseen and handled by a member of the company’s Human Resource department. This individual serves as the point of contact to ensure that the necessary criteria have been satisfied for each semester prior to approving reimbursements. Additionally any questions pertaining to guidelines and company policies related to......

Writing an Essay: the College Way

...Writing an Essay: The College Way One of the many tasks expected of college students is to know how to write well organized and developed essays. Writing an essay is not simply going about a certain topic. There are particular rules a student must apply when writing in order to submit an acceptable essay, which if they are not met, the student may face strict consequences that could even lead to expulsion. Students will learn the different techniques of writing a professional essay, like the differences between quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing. In an essay, the student must use the correct types of citation required and know the importance of citing sources properly and the consequences of citing improperly. Many of the courses at the college level require students to write an essay at one point or another. In the process of writing these essays, students will often use quotations to reinforce the argument or position presented in the essay. Quotations must be worded exactly as extracted from its source, and credit must always be given where it’s due. However, sometimes students may use paraphrasing as another way to support an idea. Paraphrasing is basically taking the information from a chosen source and expressing it in one’s own words instead of just repeating it word by word. On another note, summarizing will also be used whilst writing an essay. Instead of including an entire article to back up one’s position, a student can summarize that article by stating the......

College Tuition Cost

...will it take for colleges to set tuition cost at an affordable rate for all students? Higher education is an opportunity in social advancement, yet the cost of college is a barrier that many struggle to get through. In recent years the cost of college has risen 6.5% in the 2008-09 school year. The recent rise in college tuition and fees has made it difficult for students to reach their goal of having a higher education. It is difficult to graduate from college in four years when there are so many barriers holding back students. Higher education is a goal students strive for, yet students hit a road block when it comes to the cost of attending college. Not all students have the privilege of receiving financial aid, which is only given to those of low income families who “[d]o not have the tens of thousands of dollars needed to fund their children’s higher education” (Update: College Tuition cost 2). Some students cannot afford to pay for five classes, so they are left taking one or two classes per semester. Since tuition has been increasing it is “making it difficult for many students to obtain a college education” (College Tuition Cost 1). A college degree is an important asset in obtaining a well paid job, if students are not able to afford it, future generation will not be able to afford it either. The recent rise of college tuition leads students to acquire a debt in student loans. Students have begun using the loans as a last resort to paying for college. This issue......

Tuition in College

...Rising Costs of College College tuition is a hot topic these days. For a long time, people did not pay much attention to tuition. Today, things are changing. More and more people are realizing how high tuition has reached and now they want that to change. In this essay, I have tried to approach a very difficult topic. The problem with this topic was that while searching for facts and information I found that almost all of the information regarding it was attack after attack on the college administrations. I found no writings by college administrators attempting to defend themselves. When I started the research for my first paper this semester, I thought I would just be cruising through another English course, effortlessly composing the required essays, and looking over other peoples' thoughts on topics I could not care less about. That all changed when I discovered the truth about how much college tuition has gotten out of control over the years. Students have every right to be angry about the state of college tuition. In the past 20 years, "tuition increased twice as fast as the overall cost of living (Larson, 63)." Between 1980 and 1990, the average cost of attending public and private colleges increased by 109% and 146%, respectively “ (Hood, 10). To put these figures into perspective, we can compare them with other rising costs during the same 10-year period. Those who can afford these outrageous prices can usually also ignore it. As for the rest of us, when......

Should College Tuition Be Free for All Students?

...Should College Tuition be Free for all Students? I believe that most students today struggle to pay for college. Unless you are a 4.0 grade point average student with a complete scholarship to the university of your liking, you are subject to the same condition as the majority of college students that struggle to pay the tuition for a four year school or attend community college to transfer after two years. Despite the fact that I attend community college and call myself “financially stable” for the moment, but even with my mother’s income and with what I make myself, I am still not able to completely finance my way through college. I consider myself to be blessed as that does not even compare to what a student at a four year university has to pay for tuition; paying for tuition becomes even more burdensome if you are attending an out of state school or private university. Although financial aid tries to help students with their tuition with no expectation of being paid back, that money is generally insufficient in covering the majority of the debt. As a result, a “financially stable,” or lower status would still mean that you undertake debt that cannot be paid back in full for years to come. With that fact in mind, should college tuition be free for all students? In order to fully answer this question, I began exploring different articles that offered different opinions as to what should be done to resolve this issue. “Free College, We can afford it” by Katrina......

The Best Way to Reduce Air Pollution

...The best way to reduce air pollution is that government to raise the cost of fuel of the cars. As more and more people pay attention to environmental protection. Seeking ways to reduce air pollution has become a hot topic in society. Many people the idea that the best way to reduce air pollution is for government to raise the cost of fuel of the cars. In my opinion, this is absolutely not the most effective way to reduce air pollution. So I think the government can't raise the price of fuel to solve this problem. Firstly, it upsets the public that government raises the cost of fuel of the cars. The fuel’s current price is too high to be afforded by common employers. The latest survey shows 10% of private car owners have turned to use public transportation to go to work over the past 5 years. Therefore for the government, to adjust fuel’s price is to ignore the public’s interests. Secondly, our industry send out much waste gases into the air without being dealt with. So I think the government must give severe punishment to those factories. Industrial pollution is clearly one of the biggest contributors to our polluted landscapes because it will not only polluted the air, it’s also polluted water source. So I think the government have to make laws and rules to limit the emission. Because it must be more effective than raise the coat of fuel. In conclusion, I have shown that I still contend that raising the cost of fuel is not the best way to reduce air pollution....

Ways to Overcome Insomnia for College Students

...Ways to Overcome Insomnia for College Students What is insomnia? Insomnia is ‘a common condition in which you have trouble falling or staying asleep’ (N.H.L.B.I, 2009). According to Peterson (2002), 87 out of 218 patients in general outpatient facilities at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia complained of insomnia. Insomnia affects people of different age groups including teenagers. In fact, teenagers in tertiary education easily suffer from insomnia because they may not have a healthy lifestyle and face a lot of stress in their studies. However, there are ways for college students to deal with insomnia. To overcome insomnia, college students should adopt new sleeping habits, manage their stress level and seek professional treatment. Firstly, students who suffer from insomnia have to practice good sleeping habits. They should have a regular sleeping schedule. Also, students should go sleep and wake up at the same time for everyday. Besides, students should avoid taking caffeine, alcohol or nicotine before they go to sleep. Although alcohol can helps someone fall sleep easily, it has side-effect which affect the quality of sleep (Saisan et al., 2011). Students in insomnia should not take coffee or drinks with caffeine before they sleep. Then, students need to create the right sleeping environment. The bedroom must be quiet, dark, as well as comfort. Students should have an open-window in their bedroom or switch on the fan to keep the bedroom cool. Next,...

College Tuition

...Essay #1: College Tuition Education is a very important resource to people of all races, origins and religions. The U.S. government should pay for two years of college tuition for every U.S. Citizen who graduates from an American High School to show how education in the United States has a high impact on the job market. At this current time it is imperative for parents to ensure their children are prepared for the reality ahead. The U.S. government currently funds many different programs to help those in need of resources for shelter and a means of helping to care for families, but there is not much help available in terms of education. Although America is a free country and the government is far more lenient than other countries, the education system has fallen below the mark according to the National Educational Agency, and this matter needs to be brought to the forefront. Our American high school students are suffering and depending on the wrong type of government assistance to help maintain everyday life standards and adding to the high school drop-out rates in record highs. Currently, the government funds programs from the federal, state and local levels for high school education only. The government has separated post-secondary education to rely on student loans from lending institutions along with scholarships to help with the cost of post-secondary education. However, the funds allocated for some of these programs to help keep the American high school students in......
