Throughout my professional life, I’ve tried to maintain a basic level of privacy. I come from humble roots, and I don’t seek to draw attention to myself. Apple is already one of the most closely watched companies in the world, and I like keeping the focus on our products and the incredible things our customers achieve with them. At the same time, I believe deeply in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, who said: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ” I often challenge myself with that question, and I’ve come to realize that my desire for personal privacy has been holding me back from doing something more important. That’s what has led me to today. For years, I’ve been open with many people about my sexual orientation. Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I’m gay, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference in the way they treat me. Of course, I’ve had the good fortune to work at a company that loves http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-10-30/tim-cook-im-proud-to-be-gay Page 1 of 3

creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people’s differences. Not everyone is so lucky. While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven’t publicly acknowledged it either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me. Being gay has given me a deeper understanding of what it means to be in the minority and provided a window into the challenges that people in other minority groups deal with every day. It’s made me more empathetic, which has led to a richer life. It’s been tough and uncomfortable at times, but it has given me the…...

...TIM HORTON’S AND ITS ENCOURAGEMENT OF SOCIAL DIFFERENCE Tim Horton’s, the name that pops up during work breaks, school breaks, the name that has surrounded every corner of the city in Canada and the name that you expect to see on the cup everyone is holding when drinking coffee, but does Tim Horton’s apply to everyone? Does everyone value its service or is it only given appreciated by some? Tim Horton’s was opened in 1984 and was open only to serve coffee and donuts, to some of us, that seems like a great big deal because now Tim Hortons offers a wide range of products to consume in, it has changed from being that small corner coffee shop to a break time lunch location. The city of Toronto for example is surrounded by many different coffee places at every corner of the city, franchises like Starbucks, McDonalds, Timothy’s coffee and Second Cup are only some of the popular coffee places of today’s generation but the question is, do they target the same general consumer population or do they target different groups, and the answer is yes, they are all targeted towards different social classes indirectly. When was the last time that one saw an individual experiencing homelessness was drinking a Christmas drink from Starbucks or eating a gourmet brownie from Second Cup, well the answer is hardly, unfortunately many other franchises such as the ones listed before don’t serve all cliental, meaning, their......

...and even though she tells him several times to stop, he continues. He sexually abused her. She got back to the house of the party, picked up the phone and called 911. She didn’t say anything so the police tracked her call and went to the house. The party ended and everyone knew that the fault was hers but nobody tried to know why and she didn’t find the courage to tell. Her best friends stopped talking to her. One day she went to a game and when she saw that her ex-best friend Rachel and Andy were dating, she ran away. Melinda wanted to tell Rachel what happened in the summer but she thought she wouldn’t believe her or would hate her. A time later she went to the place where she was sexually abused and had, once again, flashbacks of that night. That was when she decided to tell Rachel the truth, so she went to school and found her in the library. After finding out that Rachel was going to prom with Andy, Melissa picked up Rachel’s pen and wrote ‘I was raped’ in Rachel’s notebook. They went outside and Rachel asked if it was someone from school and Melissa told the truth. At first, Rachel didn’t believe her and said she was only saying that because she was happy and popular and that Melissa needed mental help, but then she talked with Andy and realized that Melinda was telling the truth. Now everyone at school knew what happened and Andy went up to Melissa and started beating her. He told her that she needed to tell everyone she was lying. They were still fighting when a......

To Speak Up or Not

...Deena and other employees and the disrespectful manner in which she treated them. After months of nothing being addressed and no action being taken to correct the issues, Randi and Faith both felt a responsibility and obligation to help all of the employees in the Redwood Group. They decided to escalate their complaints and went to discuss the issues with the Redwood Groups President, Dave. Their hope was to receive some help and direction from Dave, instead, their complaints went on deaf ears, as the President did not want to be involved. As the two discuss the out of control situation and inappropriate treatment of not only themselves, but many other employees, the growing fear of employees losing their jobs in retaliation if they speak up and say anything against leadership, they both felt backed into a corner leaving them feeling they have exhausted all avenues.. Faith and Randi realized they had two choices: 1) they could either write letter to senior leadership in the corporate office including the President/CEO detailing the issues and what was happening in the Redwood Group and risk losing their jobs or 2) do nothing and turn the other cheek when they witnessed the mistreatment and retaliation of other employees by senior leadership and be safe from retaliation. Both Faith and Randi felt that management had failed with their responsibility to protect their employees and decided to write a letter and sent it to Boston. Faith lost her job two months later and......

Speak

...Speak Personal Response Speak shows that the author, Laurie Halse Anderson, understands and remembers the crude emotions and unrest that makes up a teen’s world. This happens to be the most realistic fiction story on the battles of adolescence and harassment. Melinda does not turn into a racist activist Wonder Woman (even though she might when she is older) portrayed in some movies and her recovery is not sugar coated, it describes the true struggles. Even though this novel is based on sexual harassment it also focuses on the thoughts and feelings of a victim of the cruelties in high school. Rape and harassment are not issues I have dealt with but the shunning by friends, weird teachers, and oblivious teachers are problems that I and many others can relate to. For instance, the description of the Sordino family’s communication system on page 14 depicts how some teens get cut of from communication with their parents. The author of Speak portrays high school to be truly what it really is. “I am clanless.”(4) Melinda thinks just what practically all teens think. I am part of no clan; I don’t think FFCA has clans but you still fell “uncool” or not popular. Melinda also talks a lot about how no one cares what you have to say and in reality, that is the comprehension countless teens have about adults. Laurie Halse Anderson did a dead-on illustration of a ninth graders’ day to day life in the dog eat weaker dog world we call high school. Creativity and symbolism in writing are...

Leadership Lessons from Apple Ceo Tim Cook

...Tech pundit John Dvorak said, “At some point, Apple becomes like a John Wayne movie with no John Wayne. You begin to notice something is missing. Apple without Steve Jobs is Sony.” When Tim Cook took over as Apple CEO, I had a decidedly different take: “Apple has a solid foundation as the most powerful and influential technology company on the planet. It has a unique culture, but one that Steve Jobs built to last, as he knew this day would surely come for some time now.” I went on to say that Apple’s iconic co-founder “infused a new way of thinking” that is “baked into” Apple’s culture “in a way that can live on without Jobs.” In an internal email, Cook vowed to stay true to that culture. “I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change," he wrote. "I cherish and celebrate Apple's unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that-it is in our DNA.” But I also knew that much of the company’s success going forward would “depend on new chief Tim Cook and rest of Apple’s management team,” and that “despite Cook’s promise, things are going to change. They have to change.” Related: The 9 Best Real-World Strategies Every Entrepreneur Should Know Indeed things have changed. But Cook has managed to walk that fine line between staying true to what’s unique about the company while adding value in ways that only he could – ways that even Steve Jobs could not have done.......

Tim Cook

...assignment on Tim Cook. Tim Cook is well known in the Communications and I.T. world. Tim cook took over of Apple after Steve Jobs came down with pancreatic cancer. Before Apple Tim worked at IBM, Intelligent Electronics, and Compaq. So let’s talk a little bit about his background and traits in leadership. Well when we look at Tim Cook and some of the various places he worked. He always hasn’t been a leader. He took a lot away from when he worked on the Macintosh side of the house of Apple he spent a lot of time with supplier relationships. When he was with Compaq he was the vice president and responsible for all of Compaq’s inventory. When Steve Jobs got sick Tim Cook had to step up and be the CEO of Apple. He had to do this three times while Jobs was out sick. When we look back at our studies on leadership, we see that there is a big difference between leaders and managers. I think Tim Cook is and would be a awesome leader to work for. This is what he said about leadership. Tim Cook "We want diversity of thought," he says. "We want diversity of style. We want people to be themselves. It's this great thing about Apple. You don't have to be somebody else. You don't have to put on a face when you go to work and be something different. But the thing that ties us all is we're brought together by values. We want to do the right thing. We want to be honest and straightforward. We admit when we're wrong and have the courage to change." So what has Tim Cook Done to get......

...Name: Shelly (Yiru) Shi Year: 10th Title: Speak Author: Laurie Halse Anderson The book, “Speak” by Laurie Hales Anderson is about Melinda has a deep secret in her heart which she was raped by a boy named Andy. It is too shameful and secretive for her to talk. I have a friend who was raped by her half brother, but she chose to talk to the Elders eventually. There is an old saying in Chinese that “you should turn on the light in your heart by yourself. Thus nobody can save you except you at the first time”. I feel for her because as for me sometimes when I feel that something’s are hard for other people to understand I tend not to talk about because nobody can understand. For Melinda, sex is one of the most important things in a woman’s life. Nobody wanted to ask her what happened at first time when her best friend Rachel or her mom saw her weird behavior, but also her fear and struggling in her deep heart. She needs somebody to push her, to help her in a gentle way, like Mr. Freeman did. Even though, I didn’t meet any of these things in my life, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen in somewhere else in the whole world. Before I read the book, I thought if someone doesn’t want to talk, it just because they are introverted by nature. I always adopt a nonchalant attitude towards things of no personal interest (which is a Chinese old saying). But I realize that there would be lots of people that we need to focus on. Maybe they are sadness ladies, upset students or even......

...Rubab Rahat Kath and Mouse 1. The nickname given to Helen is Mouse. Kathryn Morris aka Kath gave her this nickname because Helen “did look like a mouse, with mouse-brown hair and small, sharp features”. Helen is called Mouse because she is very quiet, shy, and passive. She is not confident enough to confront Kath for being mean to her; instead she “ducks her head like she’s been hit”. Helen is called Mouse because she behaves like an underdog who doesn’t speak up for herself against Kath. 2. The story takes place in a school during winter, “It was about ten below zero”. The setting signifies a normal school life of the present where one meets all sorts of people; both good and bad, bullies, friends, and etc. The mood and atmosphere of the story is very intense and harsh for Helen. 3. Tim O'Brien

...English Composition I 14 April 2012 Tim O’Brien Readers familiar with details from O’Brien personal life find in this novel “links” between his art and his life. The New York Times selected the book The Things They Caried as one of the best works of war fiction for the year, and Chicago Tribute awarded the novel its Heartland Prize. According to O'Brien, in using these interrelated sections of facts, story, confession, commentary, and narration of other people's experiences, he forced himself to invent a new form that blurs the boundaries between fact and fiction, short story and novel, memory and imagination. Tim O’Brien, who describes himself as “strict realist”, who dismisses critics labels of “surrealist” or “magical realist”, but admit, that he is “war writer”. Tim O’Brien uses a mixture of facts and fictions (truth and reality) to reveal the complexities of war. Tim O’Brien mixes truth and fiction in his stories. O’Brien explores the way stories are told throughout his work . In his stories he demonstrate the way truth always seems to be around the next story. Tim O’Brien himself revised his stories. In his novel are revision, after revision of what could happened, what might have happened, what did happened and what did not happened.
