...One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern, or attracted much sustained inquiry. In consequence, we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, we have no theory. I propose to begin the development of a theoretical understanding of bullshit, mainly by providing some tentative and exploratory philosophical analysis. I shall not consider the rhetorical uses and misuses of bullshit. My aim is simply to give a rough account of what bullshit is and how it differs from what it is not, or (putting it somewhat differently) to articulate, more or less sketchily, the structure of its concept. Any suggestion about what conditions are logically both necessary and sufficient for the constitution of bullshit is bound to be somewhat arbitrary. For one thing, the expression bullshit is often employed quite loosely -- simply as a generic term of abuse, with no very specific literal meaning. For another, the phenomenon itself is so vast and amorphous that no crisp and perspicuous analysis of......

...governance to a firm result into a better operating and financial performance? In this research this question is answered in the context of the banking sector of Bangladesh. This research conducts empirical analysis to examine the effect of corporate governance mechanism upon firm performance among listed Private Commercial Banks (PCBs) of Bangladesh. The percentage of independent variables in the board of directors, ownership percentage of sponsors, ownership held by other financial institutions, and ratio of management compensation to net profit are used as proxy for quality of corporate governance which are independent variables in this research. Here the dependent variables are return on equity and return on assets which indicates the banks operating performance and stock price which indicates the banks market performance. The remainder of the paper is organized as follows. In the first section the hypotheses and the explanatory variables of our research are discussed. The sample of companies that has been analyzed and the statistical techniques applied to determine the relation between the above mentioned variables are described in the second section. This is followed, in the third section, by a description of the statistical analyses and results. Finally, the conclusions of that study and the additional research avenues suggested are presented. 2. ...Dov Charney is the CEO and founder of American Apparel. He is responsible for opening the company’s first retail store in 2003. There are about 280 stores in about 20 countries. Charney owns 57% of the company and is responsible for the double-digit loss American Apparel experienced this year (Wall Street Journal). Dov Charney has loss representation from Deloitte & Touche LLC. from flawed financial statements and lost 1,500 factory workers who were illegal immigrants (The Gazette). Dov Charney has designed an organizational culture that may not be appealing to its shareholders. He argues that American Apparel is a “freewheeling creative environment; it’s not inappropriate to use foul language” (Dateline). This may be described to some as a ‘hostile work environment.’ Although the law in California states that it is permissible to use inappropriate language in a creative work environment, American Apparel employees have reported to be offended. Charney says he uses the “language of the street” at work and “it can get pretty salty” (BusinessWeek). Other company policies include drinks on the job for those who are working late and promoting a “highly sexual atmosphere”. He promotes dating within the organization and actively participates in relationships with his subordinates. He claims they have been consensual. Employees have noticed bonuses and incentives for those who have been in a relationship with him (Dateline). These actions can cause employees to feel as...

...3.1.4 Private torrents * 3.1.5 Merkle trees * 4 Examples * 4.1 Single file * 4.2 Multiple files * 5 See also * 6 References * 7 External links Background Typically, internet access is asymmetrical, supporting greater download speeds than upload speeds, limiting the bandwidth of each download, and sometimes enforcing bandwidth caps and periods where systems are not accessible. This creates inefficiency when many people want to obtain the same set of files from a single source; the source must always be online and must have massive outbound bandwidth. The BitTorrent protocol addresses this by decentralizing the distribution, leveraging the ability of people to network "peer-to-peer", among themselves. Each file to be distributed is divided into small information chunks called pieces. Downloading peers achieve rapid download speeds by requesting multiple pieces from different computers simultaneously in the swarm. Once obtained, these pieces are usually immediately made available for download by others in the swarm. In this way, the burden on the network is spread among the downloaders, rather than concentrating at a central distribution hub or cluster. As long as all the pieces are available, peers (downloaders and uploaders) can come and go; no one peer needs to have all the chunks, or to even stay connected to the swarm in order for distribution to continue among the other peers. A small torrent file is created to represent a file......

...I did not know where to start with this paper because it was such a short piece. However bullshit is used in everyday business practice and I felt the need to touch on it. I will be writing about Harry G. Frankfurt’s piece “On Bullshit.” Which after reading the piece I was not satisfied and did a little more research about it to give me a little more insight. The piece in the book compares lying and bluffing to bullshitting. He explains that lying is a falsehood and so is bluffing. The liar and bluffer are intentionally getting the facts wrong. Bullshit on the other hand is basically a counterfeit. Frankfurt uses an older Mr. Simpson from Eric Ambler’s novel “Dirty Story” and he said to his young son “Never tell a lie when you can bullshit your way through.” Frankfurt really never comes out and talks about his position on bullshit which is why I had to go and dig a little further. I found that he thinks that bullshit is worse than lying. I think ethically that he feels whether in business or in normal day life it should not be used. We are more tolerant of bullshit than lying which he leaves for us to figure out. Frankfurt explains, for a liar “Telling a lie is an act with a sharp focus” and for a bullshiter “His focus is panoramic rather than particular” (54). I do not completely agree with Frankfurt’s position on bullshit. I do not think that bullshit is worse than lying. With bullshit there is still truth. Bullshit I feel you can still see the truth it just takes the......

...Components • Direct Materials – can be easily traced to a particular unit • Direct Labour – can be easily traced to a particular unit • Manufacturing Overhead – CANNOT be easily traced to a particular unit As we recall, the total of the above 3 components is known as Product Cost, also known as Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). 3 Absorption Costing – Manufacturing Overhead 1. Select an appropriate allocation base – the most widely used allocation bases in manufacturing are direct labour-hours, direct labour cost, machine hours, and units of product (when there is only a single product). 2. Calculate a predetermined overhead rate – this is given as: Predetermined overhead rate = Estimated total manufacturing overhead cost / Estimated total amount of the allocation base 3. Apply overhead cost using predetermined overhead rate – this is given as: Overhead for a job = Predetermined overhead rate * Actual amount of the allocation base incurred by job 4 Absorption Costing – Example Sandler Corporation bases its predetermined overhead rate on the estimated machine-hours for the upcoming year. Data for the upcoming year appear below: Compute the company's predetermined overhead rate. Estimated total manufacturing overhead = $838,770 + ($3.49 per machinehour × 73,000 machine-hours) = $1,093,540 Predetermined overhead rate = $1,093,540 ÷ 73,000 machine-hours = $14.98 per machine-hour 5 Why a Predetermined Rate? • Why not calculate the overhead......

...Often we hear the phrase, "promote from within" as one of the best ways to expand the talent pool. Yet sometimes firms do not post internal openings for which anyone may apply. Instead, they select someone to promote. Why might a firm do this and what drawbacks could result? On the other hand, some firms prefer to look outside the company to increase the talent pool, including posting information on social networking sites. What are the benefits of using social media for recruitment? A firm might want to “promote from within” because the company wants to attract their employees. Every ones want to work for a company where they will have the opportunities of promotion. This will encourage people to work harder because they want to go up on that ladder of employment. Also, “promote from with in” helps company save time and money on hiring any position. Company will not have to pay the advertising fee, won’t have to read a bunch of applications, and won’t have to interview lots of people. Another plus thing is when you promote someone from with in, that person already knows well about the company and how things work, so they don’t have to spend a lot of times to learn about the company culture and stuffs, which may lowers their performance for the first couple weeks like employees that are hired from outside of the company might. So “promote from with in is a great way to strengthen your company with out having to spend too much to find the perfect candidates. However,......

...longer an inertial reference frame until you either stop or continue at a different steady speed. Example of an object having large inertia: USS Nimitz: Length: 332m (1092 feet) Beam (width): 40.8m (134 feet) Mass: 86,183,000 kg (190 million pounds) Speed: 15 meters/second (34 mph) We suspect this object, having a large mass, would strongly resist a change in its motion. So if the carrier is moving at 34 mph and shuts its engines down, how far will it drift? A thousand feet? A mile? In turns out that the stopping distance (in a smooth sea) would be about 32 km (20 miles), if no active measures are taken to stop the forward motion of the carrier (such as reversing the engines). Video clips demonstrating inertia of large objects: 1. Speed 2: final scene of cruise ship crashing into dock. 2. The Lost World (Jurassic Park 3): similar scene towards end of film where ship crashes into dock. 3. Star Trek: TNG: "Nemesis": scene near end where Enterprise rams alien spacecraft. Newton's 2nd Law: the Law of Proportionality The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to its mass. This is more readily expressed mathematically: Here, F = the force on the object (in units of Newtons), m = the object's mass (in kilograms), and a = the resulting acceleration (in units of meters per second per second, or meters/second2). Key points: 1. A force that results in an object......

...and also because it suggested luck and prosperity. Little did they know that this business would flourish though hard work, dedication, and an uncompromising commitment to total customer satisfaction, Goldilocks is now the largest Filipino-owned bakeshop chain in the world. As a true global brand, it has expanded to more than 420 stores in the Philippines and overseas markets, and now employs a workforce of over 2,000 people. Likewise, the opening day total sales of P574 back in 1966 have multiplied thousands of times over. Perhaps more impressively, generations of Filipinos consider Goldilocks not only as a brand, but a time-honored family tradition. Now celebrating its 47th year, Goldilocks continues to strengthen its position as a genuine Filipino Icon. Goldilocks Bakeshop Inc. is an entrepreneurial success story that started in 1966. They captured the hearts of the Filipinos with their “thoughtful” campaign and various other marketing strategies. The year 1995, appointment of ex-San Miguel executive Winston Marbella, saw to the professionalization and aggressive expansion of the company. A few years after in 1997, Asia suffered a regional crisis that caused an economic slowdown. Companies are getting tighter as much as the consumers’ hold on their money. Agnes Buendia, marketing manager of Goldilocks, is to propose a marketing budget for the next two years that would be appropriate given this situation. II. Time Frame The time context of the case study in......

...Identify and discuss the theories, models, and concepts that are associated with 'Internet Recruiting'. In the past, recruitment had been exists and being well used to recruit soldiers and armies. At that time, the most popular and famous recruitment media was newspapers. This is because there was no internet that time and the people who only can rely on newspapers or radios to search for job. When come to 2000s, internet become very popular and taken over the world in every field. Nowadays, internet become the main media for those who want to search for job, internet recruiting has formed. According to Edwin B. Flippo, recruitment is the process of searching the candidates for employment and stimulating them to apply for jobs in the organisation. In other words, it is also a process of attracting and searching capable and quality applicants for employment. Recruitment is a continuous process, after received resumes from applicants, company need to do another process to filter out the applicants and group them, interviews or questionnaire will be needed for this process. According to Babbie and Mouton (2001) and Van der Waldt (2013:12), there are three level of models in recruitment such as the macro-model , meso-model, and micro-model. The macro-model reflects the strategic elements that illustrates the selection process and procedures of recruitment process to achieve its goals. The meso-model describe the intermediary steps of selection and recruitment. The......
