Think About Something

I have just spent the last 10 minutes lying in my bed with no distractions thinking about the amount of homework that I have to complete this week. As I lied there I kept my eyes closed and began to think of all the different classes that I had and what each class had for homework. While doing this I began to talk to myself and worked to come to a conclusion of what I had already done, and what I needed to accomplish. As I lied there thinking and talking to myself I started to see images in my mind. The image was a to do list that I could clearly see that had each of the activities I had to complete in an order that my subconscious mind perceived as the best way to complete everything. I do not believe that this visualization would have been obtainable if I first did not speak to myself what I had to do. I believe that Herder is right when he says that thinking requires language. I had my friend Davis go to his room to think for a few minutes. I told him that he had to think solely about a golf round and only think in pictures. He came out 10 minutes later to tell me how hard it was for him to simply just visualize a round of golf. The whole time he was playing his round he said he found himself talking to himself about the shot that he had and what he had to do with each shot before he hit it. Since he was supposed to think only in pictures this was hard for him. He came to the conclusion that thinking is easier when you are allowed to communicate with yourself through bout words and pictures. This supports Herder over Grandin, I can see how Grandin’s hypothesis can be plausible, but in order for effective thinking to be done the mind likes to use language over pictures and when possible would like to combine the two in order to achieve the most amount of…...

Something to Talk About

...describe my life in one sentence, I think this would be a very accurate description. At the end of another underwhelming work day, I enter my room, slam the door, toss my jacket against the wall and slump face first onto my bed. Groaning, I turn toward the ceiling, staring at the same fan I have been staring at for the last seven years, along with the agonizing creaking noise it makes after every rotation. I see myself personified by that fan; going around in circles, wincing after every circle made, until people learn to eventually drown out the noise. After graduating college, I felt the “real world” was mine to conquer, to climb to the top and thrust my flag in for all to admire. I still remember moving in to my new place seven years ago. My parents gave me enough money to lees out a place of my own, as a sort of graduation present. The first night I slept in my new apartment, on my new mattress, the only thing I could think about was how this was a stepping stone for the start of my legacy. My eyes closed, I think about those times and feel my face cracking into a grin, the naivety of youth coupled with dreams of stars and fluff. I recall setting my sights lower and lower as time went by, to where I am at now- your average pencil pusher from nine to five. I open my eyes and look at my bedside clock, eight-thirty it tells me. I go wash up a bit and decide on eating out today. I like walking outside, watching other people going about their trivial activities, some......

Something to Talk About on the Way to the Funeral

...“Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me” –Carol Burnett. The twentieth century dramatist Ama Ata Aidoo perfectly fits this quote; as she really did change the society and people’ mentalities through her writings. Her voice depicts concerns over many social and political issues at the Ghanaian society. She stated repeated concerns for the dilemma of womanhood in Ghanaian culture at her time; she endowed the female characters in her literary works with strong wills and distinct personalities. Although she wants to prove her identity in her writings, she as well helps to expose the exploitation and disenfranchisement of women from the essence of their own identities. In “Something to Talk About on the Way to the Funeral” Aido describes women who bravely survive despite of the obstacles in the neo-colonial Ghanaian society. For the majority of her female characters independence has brought no relief and has in fact only increased the difficulties they face; this is exactly what happened to Aunt Araba or “the good woman who does not rot” She was given a part of her independence and was sent to live with a relative, as a consequence; she got pregnant without being married. Survival is the driving and divine force thorough out the story as even after she got pregnant without marriage and in the face of this tremendous troubles, Araba did not surrender nor even weakened. Instead she even got stronger “She returned home to her mother, she was looking like a ram from......

...1. Max is a victim of “workplace bullying, a form of harassment that results in employees experiencing mental distress, physical illness, loss of productivity, and a higher propensity to quit to avoid being in a toxic workplace” (Gomez-Melia et al., 2011, p. 490). Max’s peers were constantly talking and spreading rumors about him. His peer, Nicole Ianucci told other peers that he was probably having a mental breakdown because she saw him getting a prescription at the CVS (Roche, 2003). This persistent pattern of “targeting an employee to rumors or gossip with intentions to harm” (Gomez-Melia et al., 2011, p. 491) is an example of bullying behaviors. 2. With “layoff talk” around the office, management should be concerned about workplace violence. The company, MMI had been in business well over 30 years yet, recently, financial targets were missed causing rounds of layoffs (Roche, 2003). The recent round of layoffs resulted in a low morale of the team (Roche, 2003). Additionally, the last reduction of force allowed for impacted employees to take early retirement yet left extra work and long hours to those employees who retained a position (Roche, 2003). With increased job pressures and feared layoffs, stress levels of employees are on the rise. Additionally, with triggering events such as a “negative performance appraisals; personality conflicts with coworkers or managers; or personal problems, such as divorce” (Gomez-Melia et al., 2011, p. 553), a potential violent......

...obvious from the financial statements. This will usually pick up some issues that ratios may not be able to identify. It may also highlight some points that could help us in our interpretation of the ratios. Starting at the top of the statement of financial position, the following points can be noted: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Expansion of non-current assets. These have increased by about 15 per cent (from £510 million to £587 million). Note 7 mentions a new warehouse and distribution centre, which may account for much of the additional investment in non-current assets. We are not told when this new facility was established, but it is quite possible that it was well into the year. This could mean that not much benefit was reflected in terms of additional sales revenue or cost saving during 2013. Sales revenue, in fact, expanded by about 20 per cent (from £2,240 million to £2,681 million); this is greater than the expansion in non-current assets. Major expansion in the elements of working capital. Inventories increased by about 35 per cent, trade receivables by about 14 per cent and trade payables by about 36 per cent between 2012 and 2013. These are major increases, particularly in inventories and payables (which are linked because the inventories are all bought on credit – see Note 2). Reduction in the cash balance. The cash balance fell from £4 million (in funds) to a £76 million overdraft between 2012 and 2013. The bank may be putting the business under pressure to reverse......

What They Really Think About Race

...Breonna C. Close Reading Jared Gardner English 2263: Intro to Film 11 October 2013 What They Really Think About Race In Spike Lee’s film, Do the Right Thing racist stereotypes are a recurring theme throughout the entire film. The slurs are used explicitly in one of the most interesting scenes of the entire film. The three minute and thirty-four second scene shows six different characters breaking the fourth-wall between the audience and each character. The camera angles in the scene also show that the characters know that they are addressing an audience for the purpose of expressing their views on the race they are criticizing. Looking directly into the camera is usually a sin for actors to do. However, each character looks directly into the camera, acknowledging that they know it is there, and citing their rant without looking away. The affect this has makes it seem as though that character is speaking to a person directly. While this scene stands out the most for its obvious use of racist stereotypes, it is only a platform for the entire films views on racism. The scene starts with an intense conversation between Mookie and Pino. The topic of their discussion is race. Mookie questions Pino on why he constantly refers to African American people as ‘niggas’. Pino acts like he despises black people, however Mookie brings up a great point about all of his favorite celebrities, are niggas. Magic Johnson, Eddie Murphy, and Prince are all BLACK celebrities, that Pino is......

Something About Business

...The marketing environment surrounds and impacts upon the organization. There are three key elements to the marketing environment which are the internal environment, the microenvironment and the macroenvironment. Marketers build both internal and external relationships. Marketers aim to deliver value to satisfied customers, so we need to assess and evaluate our internal business/corporate environment and our external environment which is subdivided into micro and macro.Every manager in an organization observes the outside environment with disciplined methods—marketing research and marketing intelligence—for collecting information about the marketing environment. They also spend more time in customer and competitor environments. By carefully studying the environment, marketers can adapt their strategies to meet new marketplace challenges and opportunities. The microenvironment consists of the actors close to the company that affect its ability to serve its customers—the company, suppliers, marketing intermediaries, customer markets, competitors, and publics. The macroenvironment consists of the larger societal forces that affect the microenvironment—demographic, economic, natural, technological, political, and cultural forces. Marketing research uncovers opportunities for marketers to get their messages across in the extreme changing promotional environment. Over time, the marketing mix must be altered because of changes in the environment in which consumers and businesses......

...anyone should wish to accentuate, let alone make a style from. Men have tormented us before with bad fashions. We've witnessed men in tights, the socks and sandals combo, but believe me when I say that we've never seen a mistake on this level before. True, there was a time when men wore stockings, but at least they wore then with confidence, a quality that seems to be sadly lacking when sagging jeans showing your boxers are considered the norm. Perhaps guys do it as a statement of individuality, flying in the face of conformity, but I'm afraid this is a poorly thought out master plan, given that individuality requires something unique to be present. The sagging trouser is moving throughout the world like the plague, a ridiculous style that is more than an eyesore. Being an individual is not about following what everyone else is doing, however it is about being brave enough to hold onto your values when everyone else dresses like an idiot. It's also just offensive. The days when I could sit, quite innocently, minding my own business without being plagued with the various styles and colors of different individuals boxers are over. Please, baggy pants-wearers pull yourselves together and pull your legwear up. You're not individual and I'm quite fed up with it....

Washington Consensus, Things to Think About

...China, Egypt, India, Lao PDR, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and Vietnam—have such diverse policy configurations, and why attempts to copy successful policy reforms in another country often end up in failure. Finally, reform efforts need to be selective and focus on the binding constraints on economic growth rather than take a laundry-list approach à la Washington Consensus. While there is no foolproof method of identifying these constraints, common sense and economic analysis can help (see below). When investment is constrained by poor property rights, improving financial intermediation will not help. When it is constrained by high cost of capital, improving institutional quality will hardly work. Experimentation and learning about the nature of the binding constraints, and the changes therein, are therefore an integral part of the reform process. Even though countries may face situations in which many constraints need to be addressed simultaneously, the report judges these situations to be rare: “In most cases, countries can deal with constraints sequentially, a few at a time” (p. 16). Several key ideas underpin this interpretation of the evidence. First, political leaders may have had the talk, but they didn’t quite have the walk: their commitment to genuine reform was often “skin-deep” and there was “lack of follow-through” (Krueger 2004). Second, and more fundamentally, even committed reformers stopped well short of undertaking the full gamut of......

How Nations Think About Race

...Sayzon Dunn English 110 Section 031 2/12/16 #3 How Nation Thinks About Race The U.S has shown an interesting feel for race and how the U.S profiles each human in the United States Census, as portrayed in the article, "Time to transform how nation thinks about race". Towards the end of the article, it was stated "how America and even the world think (or do not think) about race." However, after reading the article, one could conclude that the U.S doesn't not care about race, but is trying and needs to ensure that the census is on point with including all social profiles, relevant to the U.S. One could actually grow to agree with Charmaine Royal's argument, including me, also believing it to be effective. The article has used plenty of evidence to support her implication that the U.S needs to transform how the U.S feels about race. Muslims represent a religion, not a race and therefore "Muslim" should not be a category included in the Census. America is and has been for many years having problems with terrorism and Muslims attacking and bombing places in our country. For instance, "911", being arguably the most tragic moment for U.S history, has devastated the U.S people. People have grown to stereotype Muslims as being mainly terrorists, when it is not true for all of them. Even friends of mines have actually seen Muslims around and have automatically made terrorist jokes about the Muslims. In my opinion, having Muslim, which is, in fact, a religion not a race,......
