How far did the effective operation of slavery in British colonies in the year’s c1760-1833 primarily rely on the use of brutality?
• The treatment of slaves in the United States varied by time and place, but was generally brutal and degrading. Whipping, execution and sexual abuse including rape were common.
• Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, hanging, beating, burning, mutilation, branding and/or imprisonment.
• Punishment was most often meted out in response to disobedience or perceived infractions, but slaves were also sometimes abused to assert the dominance of their master or overseer.
• The mistreatment of slaves frequently included rape and the sexual abuse of women. Many slaves were killed as a result of resisting sexual attacks.
• Others sustained psychological and physical trauma. The sexual abuse of slaves was partially rooted in the patriarchal nature of contemporary Southern culture and its view of women of any race as property.
• After generations, there were numerous mixed-race (mulatto) offspring, many held in slavery. Although white Southern society abhorred sexual relations between white women and black men as damaging to racial purity.
• Even the most kindly and humane masters knew that only the threat of violence could force gangs of field hands to work from dawn to dusk, "with the discipline," as one contemporary observer put it, "of a regular trained army."
• Frequent public floggings reminded every slave of the penalty for inefficient labour, disorderly conduct, or refusal to accept the authority of a superior.

Slave culture is no different. Though African slaves were shipped from different parts of Africa as individuals, there was no accommodation for the retention of family units. This voyage of death became their common experience. The hardship endured in the crucible of the Atlantic crossing contributed to the state of mind and their view of the new world in which they were exiled. It was this new experience that began to shape the new African Culture. Slaves from differing colonies were thrown together and forced to form communities and work groups. They are found in spirituals, editorials, autobiographies, etc. Three key elements are the rebellion of slaves, humanitarianism, and the cruelty of the slave owners emphasized. All slaves were treated wrongfully in many ways. They were beaten, whipped, starved, and talked down upon. There wasn’t anything that they could do, but take the whipping. The author begins the story with a description of his childhood of his early years as a slave. The author use begins it like this because he wanted to show us that a slaves’ hardship begins when they are young. Elkins outlined the problems of slavery in the 1950's, and in depth detail discussed his Theory of Sambo. Elkin's defined Sambo as the standard North American slave personality, a zombie like state of mind, Elkin's believed that slave owners had complete control over a slave's body and mind. ...In researching the topic of slave resistance, most historians agree on the point that enslaved blacks resisted slavery in whatever methods they could. Slave resistance was widespread throughout the West Indies during the period of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The resistance took on various forms and these will be examined in this essay. Since enslaved blacks were forcibly brought to the West Indies, slave owners realized that it was necessary to control the enslaved. In this regard, slave laws were introduced as a way of keeping the slaves in line. Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation finally set them free on January 1, 1863. However, just because they were set free did not mean they were equal. Abraham Lincoln did not agree with the institution of slavery for different reasons than most people. He did not necessarily think they were equal to their white counterparts, but he thought freeing the slaves would help crush the south during the civil.
