Haunting of Hill House Throughout the entire story you read about many different episodes where it seems that Hill House is a house that is haunted. However, most of these occurrences are never proven that they are actually “haunted” ones. As readers, we just assume that they are and we don’t really think about questioning it while we are in the moment of reading. After reading the sections of the story when these events happen more than once, I began to believe that Hill House was not haunted at all. I think that it is the guests having the idea in their head that it is haunted, so their minds start playing tricks on them and they let their imagination get the best of them. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary give this definition for the word imagination, the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality. I believe that this exact definition is what is going on in Hill House. As people get older I think they forget how powerful their imaginations used to be when they were children. When I think about it, I used to imagine some of the craziest stuff when I was younger. Now that I’m older, I don’t really use my imagination much anymore because I really don’t have a need to use it. I remember when I would watch a scary movie as a child, I would let some of most ridiculous things allow to play tricks on my mind. If there would be a noise my house would make when the wind would blow, I would be used to hearing it any other time. However, after I would watch something that would scare me, I would allow myself to believe that there was something in the house. A perfect example would be after I watched the move “Child’s Play” when I was 8 years old. I went to bed that night not even thinking about the movie at the time, and while I was…...

Haunting Beauty

...Nash 29 April 2013 Haunting Beauty If one is intrigued by a highly creative and masterful piece of drama, which may contain family dysfunctions, lust and tragedy all tied into one cryptic soap opera, then Kasi Lemmon’s “Eve’s Bayou” is the perfect concoction containing all the aforementioned ingredients. “Eve’s Bayou” sets the dramatic piece in the heart of traditionally black and voodoo inhabited Louisiana. The issues she portrays are ones that maybe many black individuals like to ignore and/or avoid, and this film shows how maybe some of those people, both adults and children, cope with these matters, except portraying it through the eyes of a child, Eve Batiste. Overall, the movie is good because of its technical features: storyline, characters, and setting. Eve Batiste, portrayed by Jumee Smollett, is a ten-year old girl that learned some difficult lessons about truth, love, and fidelity in the movie. Eve’s father Louis, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, is a successful and well-liked doctor in an African-American community in Louisiana. Being a good father and an excellent provider, Louis sometimes has ways of attracting the ladies, which he does not turn them away. During a party at the Batistes, Louis’ kids Eve and Cisely, portrayed by Meagan Good, his wife Roz, portrayed by Lynn Whitfield, noticed that Louis was dancing with the same women a lot. Later that night, Eve caught her father cheating on her mother with another woman in the carriage house. When......

Fox Hill Development

...| Fox Hill Development | Analysis by Group 3 | | Zach Anderson, David Cook, Jason Hill, Bob Stevenson, Stephen Tobian | 10/24/2013 | | Executive Summary Fox Hill Development (FHD) is a homebuilder that uses skilled workers as employees, rather than subcontractors to complete residential construction projects. FHD is interested in reducing costs and increasing efficiency through project management; specifically, they want to take advantage of reducing the completion time of a given task or multiple tasks should the need arise. They are also interested in determining the optimal number of days to complete construction of a typical residential project that minimizes the overall cost. Problem Currently the activities performed to build a house are disorganized. FHD is differentiating themselves by having employees, instead of the industry standard subcontractors, but they are using them as they would subcontractors. If the activities to build a single home were better orchestrated, FHD could reduce the time and cost required to complete one house. FHD has asked us to help them find a solution. Approach We began by mapping out all the activities needed to finish a home in order to understand the constraints on the project. Once the map was complete, we were able to identify the critical path (See Exhibit A), or the longest sequence of events that determines the length of the project. Through linear programming we were able to determine the optimal time......

City on a Hill

...City on a Hill Speeches John Winthrop in particular has been quoted as a source of inspiration by U.S. presidents from John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. John Winthrop crossed the ocean from England to New England aboard the Arabella in early 1630s. His passengers were primarily Puritans who had fled England in search of religious freedom. John Winthrop's directive provided inspiration and caution to the passengers, and his determination was seen through John F. Kennedy’s and Ronald Reagan’s eyes. The “City on a Hill” speech was the motivational piece for John Winthrop, and the incentive for John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. The “City upon a Hill” section of the sermon called “A Model of Christian Charity” was written in 1630s by the Puritan leader, John Winthrop, while the first group of Puritan emigrants was still onboard their ship. The “City upon a Hill” passage has come to represent irritating Puritan pridefulness; they thought they were perfect, a city on a hill that everyone else would admire and want to imitate. In reality, the passage is far from a back-patting exercise. Winthrop knew that the events in New England would be watched not just by England, but by the world. It was in this context that Winthrop noted: “We must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us.” His language made it clear that we were not destined to be a shining example, only that we were destined to be an example, shining or not. In theory, his......

Beacon Hill

...Beacon Hill – Study Case Beacon Street 1. How did Leonard go about searching for and evaluating property? Just like any investor, Leonard is taking into considerations many different aspects: demographics, amenities, rent averages and county regulation. Considered that Leonard is looking for a long-term source of income, he is looking at properties with an expected low depreciation, a maximized capital appreciation and an increasing market value in the foreseeable future. Given his $25,000 and an expected return on the investment of 8%, Leonard realized he would have to look for properties in the back slope of Beacon Hill, where real estate had a great potential market growth. In order to meet all his expectations and at the same time remain within his budget, Leonard also realized he needed a property that would require considerable renovation. When choosing whether or not to bid on the 4-unit apartment house he found on Beacon Hill, Leonard ran some numbers. Assuming a market value of $175,000, which is the bank’s estimate following the fire that damaged the real estate, Leonard would qualify for a loan of $160,000; renovating the building would cost $55,000 which brings expensive up to $223,000, while the amount of funds available to Leonard are $185,000. Since mortgage regulation imposes a financing not higher than 80% of the total market value of the premises, Leonard must improve the property’s value so that renovating and set up costs can be covered by the......

...specifications needed for the implementation. Plan The HR server at headquarters will be the one central location for the employee information and DB servers. All other servers and employees on the Riordan domain will go through this server to authenticate any information is released. The servers at each site will have local copies of this information that will be constantly updated. In this way, a user in china does not have to communicate with the server in Missouri; they only need to communicate with their local server, even though all of the information is centralized in California. Upper management will need to choose the HRIS software and payroll software, and many times these can be integrated into the same program or can be developed in house. Whatever they decide, managers and employees will have access to this software to eliminate paper trails and antiquated things like filing cabinets. However, their level of access will be limited depending on their role in the company. Information will be much more easily maintained and security will be handled by authorizations and group policies. The security and integrity of this information will be of the highest priority. Regular backups of the new system will be scheduled, both onsite and offsite in the cloud. Riordan does not have a data center, so they will have to subscribe to an online backup for offsite backup of the information. For onsite backup the servers will be configured with a RAID 5 configuration with......

...noted that in the mid ‘90s, the main administrator of government-subsidized housing finance programs, the National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation or NHMFC, was considered technically insolvent and irreversibly illiquid. “The corporation incurred net losses of P64 million in 1993, which increased six-fold by end of 1995 to P340 million. The fiscal impact of these losses was huge,” Ballesteros said. Problems with government housing finance persist, with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) putting on hold its housing loan program in 2011 due to total unpaid loans of P11 billion for 17,000 house-and-lot packages nationwide. It had been providing housing loans since 1954, previously to GSIS members only but later began extending loans to developers. The institution eventually went into real estate development, buying land and building houses and selling these as house-and-lot packages. GSIS did not have adequate manpower to support its various financing activities, however, which resulted in its failure to collect payments. As of mid-2014, GSIS reported that its housing loan remedial and restructuring program had only restructured about P1.5 billion worth of accounts covering 3,000 borrowers. Ballesteros said that, moving forward, more effective institutional and policy changes have to be made. Subsidy interventions in the financial system, for instance, should be focused on low- to middle-income households, or those who are able to fulfill obligations......

...The plot line of the story includes numerous major incidents. They are: 1) The opening of the story and an introduction of many of the major characters, including Luke, the narrator, his grandfather, and the "hill people" and Mexicans who will be picking cotton on their farm for the next two months. This also introduces a sub-plot line that will be important to the novel – Luke and his family's love of baseball. 2) Pappy's money woes and the hope the cotton will provide enough money to pay the workers and at least break even in costs. 3) The first conflict with the hill people, who camp in the front yard instead of the back, which sets the stage for further conflicts to come. 4) The introduction of Luke's father, Jesse Chandler, and his dream to own forty acres of land. 5) Introduces the Korean War, and Ricky, Jesse's brother who is fighting in Korea. This indicates the importance of the war to the family, and how close to home it is every night through the nightly news radio broadcasts of Edward R. Murrow. The radio broadcasts of news and their "beloved" Cardinal baseball team are their tenuous hold on the outside world, otherwise their world is insulated and far removed from the widespread prosperity sweeping America. 6) The picking in the cotton fields, the division between the Mexicans and the others, and the backbreaking labor of picking. 7) Introduces the budding relationship between Tally and Cowboy. 8) The hatred of the Spruills for the Chandlers...

The Round House

...The Round House 11/3/14 By: Shannon Long For decades, when a Native American woman has been assaulted or raped by a man who is non-Indian, she has had little or no recourse. Under long-standing law in Indian country, reservations are sovereign nations with their own police departments and courts in charge of prosecuting crimes on tribal land. But Indian police have lacked the legal authority to arrest non-Indian men who commit acts of domestic violence against native women on reservations, and tribal courts have lacked the authority to prosecute the men. In Louise Erdrich’s novel, The Round House the main character’s father explains his understanding of “ideal justice as opposed to the best-we-can-do kinds of justice, which is what we end up with in making so many of our decisions”(306). Those who avenge killings, when the legal system can’t or won’t act, bear the consequences of having taken a human life. In the end, Joe’s parents “know everything. The sentence was to endure . . . I don’t remember that they even looked at me or I at them after the shock of that first moment when we all realized we were old” (317). When Joe hears that the judge handling his mother’s case is uncertain whether the accused man can be charged at all, the 13-year-old boy whose mother was raped pursues his own quest for justice. Narrating this gripping story years later, having himself become a public prosecutor, Joe shows how a seemingly isolated crime has many roots. The Round House is a......
