Edge Coloring

...Edge coloring From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search     A 3-edge-coloring of the Desargues graph. In graph theory, an edge coloring of a graph is an assignment of “colors” to the edges of the graph so that no two adjacent edges have the same color. For example, the figure to the right shows an edge coloring of a graph by the colors red, blue, and green. Edge colorings are one of several different types of graph coloring. The edge-coloring problem asks whether it is possible to color the edges of a given graph using at most k different colors, for a given value of k, or with the fewest possible colors. The minimum required number of colors for the edges of a given graph is called the chromatic index of the graph. For example, the edges of the graph in the illustration can be colored by three colors but cannot be colored by two colors, so the graph shown has chromatic index three. By Vizing's theorem, the number of colors needed to edge color a simple graph is either its maximum degree Δ or Δ+1. For some graphs, such as bipartite graphs and high-degree planar graphs, the number of colors is always Δ, and for multigraphs, the number of colors may be as large as 3Δ/2. There are polynomial time algorithms that construct optimal colorings of bipartite graphs, and colorings of non-bipartite simple graphs that use at most Δ+1 colors; however, the general problem of finding an optimal edge coloring is NP-complete and the fastest known algorithms for it......

...in the non-disposable razor category? Assess Paramount’s competitive position. What are the strategic life-cycle challenges for Paramount’s current products as well as Clean Edge? The non-disposable razor category has seen changes in the recent years. * Advertising expenditures increased significantly for newer and smaller players to grab the market share whereas established players did not increase it significantly. * Male grooming product seemed to be a bright spot in the industry with the advent of male-specific personal care products that outpaced the growth in women’s beauty market * 5% growth per year from 2007 to 2010, attributed to innovations and product introductions. * Diversified as better margin derived from the product brought in retailers in the form of club stores and other stores. Competitive Position: * Global Consumer Product Giant with over $13 billion in worldwide sales and $7 billion in gross profits for 2009 since its entry into the market in 1962 * Respected brand in non-disposable razor market. * 23.3% market share by volume of overall non-disposable razor unit and market leader in moderate non-disposable razor unit both by volume and dollar. * New players with technologically improved products posing a threat to Paramount. Strategic Life Cycle Challenges: Clean Edge Razor – based on superior technology and 5 blade design would give enormous boost in sales provided the product does not cannibalize the existing non-disposable razor......

Clean Edge Razor Case

...role is to analyse the Clean Edge Razor Case in terms of the inner and external situation, the alternative solutions and assess each solution, then give recommendations on which alternative solution to choose, what the advantages and disadvantages are. Finally, suggest implementations that should be taken in order to achieve the goal. As a leader in the heath product and grooming manufacturer company, Paramount is introducing a more technologically revolutionary nondisposable razor into the super-premium market to maintain market share. However, there are many competitors in this segment and Paramount is considering the proper the positioning method to choose to gain the most market shares. Both niche positioning and mainstream positioning have pros and cons. Niche positioning focus on specific group of male that are very concerned with the functionality and the messaging of the razor. They seek superior shaving experience and consider shaving as daily grooming ritual. Mainstream positioning focus on a broad market and target at the consumers that have ordinary shaving needs. However, the key issue is that mainstream positioning may cause cannibalization effect, triggering decline in sales of the company’s old products due to the intrusion of new advanced products. Without cannibalization, net profit is higher in mainstream positioning. However, considering the effect of cannibalization, the result is completely different. Brand name of Clean Edge is also important since......

Wavelets and Edge Detection

...Wavelets and Edge Detection CS698 Final Project Submitted To: Professor Richard Mann Submitted By: Steve Hanov Course: CS698 Date: April 10, 2006 INTRODUCTION Wavelets have had a relatively short and troubled history. They seem to be forever confined to footnotes in textbooks on Fourier theory. It seems that there is little that can be done with wavelets that cannot be done with traditional Fourier analysis. Stephane Mallat was not the father of wavelet theory, but he is certainly an evangelist. His textbook on the subject, A Wavelet Tour of Signal Processing [1], contains proofs about the theory of wavelets, and a summation about what is known about them with applications to signal processing. One of his many papers, Characterization of Signals from Multiscale Edges [2], is frequently cited as a link between wavelets and edge detection. Mallat’s method not only finds edges, but classifies them into different types as well. Mallat goes on to describe a method of recovering complete images using only the edges, but we will not implement it in this project. In this project, we study this paper, and implement the method of Mallat to multiscale edge detection and analysis. We will first present a short background on wavelet theory. Then we will describe the different types of edges that exist in images, and how they can be characterized using a Lipschitz constant. Next, we describe the algorithm for the wavelet transform, from the Mallat paper. Finally, we show the......

What are the strategic life cycle challenges for Paramount’s current products as well as for Clean Edge? 2. How is the nondisposable razor market segmented? Examine consumer behavior for nondisposable razors. Non-disposable razor has been experiencing 5% growth per year with refill cartridges growth of 2% per year. The market segments are super-premium (34%), moderate (44%) and value (22%).. The industry experienced a significant growth in super-premium in last decade. Recent studies showed that consumers purchased razors and replacement cartridges more frequently than before. Customers’ behaviors are maintenance shavers (33%), aesthetic shavers (28%) and social/emotional shavers (39%). Customers are moving to highly involved segments. In addition, the rate of new products introductions had accelerated with 22 SKUs introduced between 2008 and 2009. Paramount is a major player in the market. Main competitors are Prince, Benet & Klein and New entrants (Simpsons and Radiance). All of them played in super-premium segments. Paramount’s competitive edge is they are well known brand in the moderate and value segments. In addition, Clean Edge is the most innovative product, a product leader. No products can match it unless Navi which has similar functions offered by Radiance. However, Radiance is a new entrant which might not be able to complete with Paramount.......

Ob on the Edge

...250 OB ON THE EDGE The Toxic Workplace It’s not unusual to find the following employee behaviours in today’s workplace: Answering the phone with a “yeah,” neglecting to say thank you or please, using voice mail to screen calls, leaving a half cup of coffee behind to avoid having to brew the next pot, standing uninvited but impatiently over the desk of someone engaged in a telephone conversation, dropping trash on the floor and leaving it for the maintenance crew to clean up, and talking loudly on the phone about personal matters.1 Some employers or managers fit the following descriptions: In the months since [the new owner of the pharmacy] has been in charge [he] has made it clear that he is at liberty to fire employees at will . . . change their positions, decrease their bonus percentages, and refuse time-off and vacation choices. Furthermore, he has established an authoritarian work structure characterized by distrust, cut-backs on many items deemed essential to work comfort, disrespect, rigidity and poor-tono-communication.2 He walked all over people. He made fun of them; he intimidated them. He criticized work for no reason, and he changed his plans daily.3 251 What’s Happening in Our Workplaces? Workplaces today are receiving highly critical reviews, being called everything from “uncivil” to “toxic.” Lynne Anderson and Christine Pearson, two management professors from St. Joseph’s University and the University of North Carolina, respectively, note that......

Clean Edge Razor

...million in gross profit, with operating profit of $26 million. Paramount has two disposable razor products, the Paramount Pro, placed in the moderate segment of the product market and the Paramount Avail, a value offering in the market. The two combined make up 23.3% of the company’s share of the industry. Additionally, the shaving market is divided into three categories of “shavers”, each with unique needs from their razor. These are: maintenance shavers, social/emotional and aesthetic shavers. Recently, Paramount developed a new non-disposable razor, Clean Edge. With a new design, the Clean Edge offers scientifically proven, superior performance as it utilizes a vibrating technology to stimulate hair follicles and lift hair from the skin, which allows for a more thorough shave. Paramount is now faced with two options in introducing the Clean Edge razor in the market. With its innovative new features, Clean Edge will be priced in the “super premium” segment of the market. Competitor Overview Paramount’s competition consists of both direct competitors as well as substitute products. Substitute products include disposable razors, electric shavers, depilatory creams, waxing and laser hair removal. While disposable razors provide a “wet” shave alternative, they lack the innovation and technology that are standard for non-disposable razors produced by Paramount and its direct competitors. As a result, disposable razors mainly compete on price. Similarly,......

Leadership Edge

...The class that was most influential for me was ‘The Leadership Edge’. Before taking this class I thought leadership was simply a person who leads or guides or a person who is in command of others. However, I now understand that leadership encompasses a plethora of characteristics and abilities. I believe three common factors exist in successful leadership; a focus on people, clear communication, and character. A good leader understands that he or she cannot accomplish anything without the support of followers. The best way to develop this support is by showing love, dignity, and respect to the people being led. I have learned that a leader is an individual who, while in authority over a group of people, provides sufficient or superior guidance for the completion of an effort. Dealing with people can sometimes be my weakness. I am an introvert and sometimes find myself withdrawn in certain situations that detail for my social characteristics. I definitely don’t take too kind to being judged from other people but I do realize that people are entitled to their opinions and I must understand that all people are different and we must adjust to each others differences. I know that in being a leader I must aspire to work on my character and competence to solve structural and systemic problems within myself and my organization at work. Change starts from within. I must first work on the programmer if I want to improve the program. As I give grace to others, I will receive......

An Undisputable Edge

...An Undisputable Edge The Indiana Pacers, the Golden State Warriors, and the Denver Nuggets… these three NBA teams all made the playoffs last season. However, so did several other teams, so why mention these three? If we look back at their road to the postseason, these three squads have a significant difference in their win-loss record when compared to all the other teams: when playing at home, their records were far better as compared to when playing on the road. Let’s take a look at the Indiana Pacers. Going into the playoffs, this team was the third seed in the Eastern Conference, a noteworthy achievement. However, when playing on the road, this team was mediocre throughout the season, ending up with a sub-500 record, 19-22 (ESPN). However, this squad seemed to sync and “click” when playing in Indianapolis, recording 30 home wins as opposed to only 11 losses, enabling them to clinch such a high seed in the playoffs. A similar pattern occurred in Golden State, seeded six due to their home record of 28-13, despite a road record of 19-22 (ESPN). The most astonishing team was the Denver Nuggets, who were also the three seed, but in the Western Conference. This squad managed to tally a whopping 38 wins at home to only three losses! With this near-perfect win-loss ratio, you must be questioning how they were not seeded number one. The answer lies in their struggle to achieve similar success while playing as the visiting team: the Nuggets had the same road record......

Clean Edge

...After three years of development, Paramount Health and Beauty Company is preparing to launch a new technologically advanced vibrating razor called Clean Edge. The innovative new design of Clean Edge provides superior performance by stimulating the hair follicles to lift the hair from the skin, allowing for a closer shave. The company has already decided to introduce Clean Edge into the men's market where it has a strong presence. Jackson Randall, the product manager for Clean Edge, struggles with how best to position the product for the launch. One strategy is to release Clean Edge as a "niche" product, targeting the high-end market of fastidious groomers looking for superior skin care products. Another strategy is to release the product into the highly competitive mainstream razor market where the product can be positioned as the most effective razor available. Randall meets internal resistance to the mainstream strategy from the product manager for the company's current, but aging, mainstream razor products and he must consider the effects of cannibalization in his plan. Randall must recommend an optimal strategy and provide supporting economic analysis of his decision--not just for Clean Edge, but for its effect on the entire company. Learning Objective Explore issues associated with strategic product positioning. Review new product development process and understand the importance of evaluating product-company and product-market fit in assessing new product......

Clean Edge

...Arguments for launching Clean Edge as a niche product A primary of launching the Clean Edge as a niche product is that the company would incur a lot less cannibalization of its Pro and Avail product lines, which allowed Paramount to capture the unit-volume market-leader position in 2009. Though a cannibalization rate of 35% is expected with the launch of Clean Edge as a niche product, the rate is significantly lower than the 60% expected if Clean Edge was positioned as a mainstream brand. As Rosenberg indicated, a niche positioning strategy would be a better fit to the company’s existing product portfolio. Furthermore, the niche positioning strategy would incur considerably lower marketing expenses than the mainstream positioning strategy. Marketing expenses for the niche positioning strategy is $15 million for the first year and $16 million in the second year. The niche option is much lower compared to the expected marketing expenses for the mainstream option, which would cost $42 million in the first year and $39 million in the second year. A strong quantitative argument could be made for launching Clean Edge as a niche product because it would cost $50 million less in marketing expenses over the course of two years. Moreover, greater advertising expenditures for the mainstream launch may not be justifiable given the fact that the cost of advertising is increasing greater than the rate of retail sales dollars in the super-premium segment. The scenario analysis......

Church on the Edge

...Church is a connectional church, functioning on several levels, the first level being the local church. Local churches are grouped geographically into Presbyteries, and Presbyteries are grouped to form Synods. The highest level of the church is called the General Assembly, which meets every year with representatives coming from all levels of the church, across the entire country and internationally, to consider the issues, the business, and the mission of the church. . The African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) church operates under an Episcopal polity that is hierarchical in structure where the denominational leaders are bishops of the church with the chief authority over a local church. George B. Thompson, Jr.’s narrative Church on the Edge of Somewhere, Ministry, Marginality and the Future, reminds church congregations of their mission to embrace those person who are valuable, worthy of the churches attention, although they may be different and live on the fringes of the comfortable society – a marginalized people. Thompson defines congregations by their specific concentration of ministry (outward or inward) and by the social-economic status of their members (conventional or marginal): • Inner-directed marginal - are in a survival mode. Like the storefront churches of immigrants, they have little physical or leadership capital for reaching out to other marginal persons. It is enough for such churches to reach stability or conventionality as a precondition to having......
