The Culture of DOTA in the Philippines
Joshua Frankie B. Rayo
Department of Computer Science, University of the Philippines Diliman jbrayo@up.edu.ph Abstract. The culture of DOTA (Defense of the
Ancients) has taken the Philippines to storm because of its very creative gameplay that caused millions of Filipino students hard for them to avoid playing the game; and it is also evident from media to the internet. This game has brought such intense effects to the Filipino youth and its everyday life; up to the point where they are affected physically, psychologically, and their respective careers.
Because of DOTA, the computer shops in the country have been growing massively since its release; the youth are gathered there to play informally and to show their enthusiasm and foster friendship, teamwork and camaraderie. It follows the ‘booming’ computer shop industry and culture in the country. Also, some people handle DOTA tournaments to encourage other people and make this gaming industry to grow in the country.
Because of the addiction of the people playing the game, they also express DOTA through the arts and music, language, internet and the social networks. Due to the…...

Set of Reflections on Filipino Culture, Nationalism, Economic Development, and Philippine Politics and Democracy

...Set of Reflections on Filipino Culture, Nationalism, Economic Development, and Philippine Politics and Democracy By: Virgilio Angelo G. Gener A Review and an Overview – the Introduction As I begin to think on what I will write on my reflections on the significant lessons and insights that I have distilled in my readings for the past two months, I remember that American journalist and essayist Henry Louis “H.L.” Mencken once opined that: “A Historian by his nature, is an unsuccessful novelist.” If there is a commonality that I have noticed in the methodology of writing of the scholarly articles that I have read, it is the fact that majority of them was written in a narrative and historical standpoint. Thus, when I was brainstorming prior to the completion and formal writing of this essay, I deemed it necessary that the methodology or mode of presentation of my reflective essay should complement the style of writing the journal articles were presented. This was one of the things that I had in mind and served as my setback in finally commencing the writing of my reflective essay. The past two months of attending classes and racing through the pages of the assigned readings were, in my own personal opinion, a review of history as well as an overview of the opinions of scholars on certain social aspects, whether they be on the past, present, or the uncertain future of the Philippines. It is a review, since most of the readings discussed matters and happenings that......

As in role-playing games, players level up their heroes and use gold to buy equipment during the mission. The scenario was developed with the "World Editor" of Reign of Chaos, and was updated upon the release of its expansion, The Frozen Throne. There have been many variations of the original concept; the most popular being DOTA Allstars, which eventually was simplified to DOTA with the release of version 6.68. This specific scenario has been maintained by several authors during development, the latest of whom being the anonymous developer known as "Ice Frog" developing the game since 2005. Philippine Culture

...The Philippines is considered to be one of the most westernized countries in Asia. It has strong ties to the United States and the United Nations. In fact, It is the only charter member of the U.N. in all of Southeast Asia. The United States has a very close relationship with the economy and culture of the Philippines. For instance, Filipinos have a strong resentment toward communistic countries. During the cold war, the Philippines supported America by consistently being hostile toward communist countries, and did not maintain diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union or any other communist state. The United States is the largest foreign consumer of Philippine products. In many ways the survival of the philippine economy depends on the united States. We purchase almost all of the sugar exports, most of the coconut oil, embroidery, at least half of the base metals, and a fourth of the lumber. The United States supplies most of the Philippine imports of machinery, dairy products, cotton, papers, drugs, automobiles and much or the petroleum products. Although countries like Japan, Canada Australia, and New Zealand are getting more and more involved in trade with the Philippines, America remains to be the Philippines most important trading partner. When America acquired the Philippines and established free trade in 1909, the economy of the islands was tied to that parent country. As a result, the Philippines became almost entirely dependent upon United States......

Media Killings Under the Culture of Impunity in the Philippines

...Cuerdo, Ruth Ann P. Media Killings under the Culture of Impunity in the Philippines Freedom of Expression and the Media “Everyone has the right to freedom of expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers” according to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Ideally that was the case, but what happens when this right to freedom becomes hampered in a country that was ironically deemed as being the freest in Asia. The Philippine media has been known for its “long tradition of respect for free expression” which we could be traced back during the American period of administration where the freedom of the press was said to be recognized (Pineda-Ofreneo, as cited in ARTICLE 19 & Center for Media Freedom & Responsibility [CMFR], 2005). This commitment to free expression, right to information and freedom of the press was then continued in the first Philippine Republic (Malolos Constitution in 1899) that was about more than a hundred years ago, and was expanded through the succeeding Constitutions in the country (Teodoro & Kabatay, cited in ARTICLE 19 & CMFR, 2005). However, regardless of the having a liberal tradition along with liberal laws, still there was no guarantee for the full exercise of the freedom of expression and the freedom of the press, as it was also......

Philippine Culture

...Three centuries under Spanish rule followed by 50 years of American influence has made the Philippines an Asian country unlike any other. Through a thick layer of Spain and America, we can glimpse the Filipino soul trying to express its unique, cultural identity through creativity. Through music and dance: Usually a celebration of the earth’s bounty, ready to dance in the streets to tribal drum rhythms. Or simply marvel at elaborate floats blooming with the season’s harvest and the town folk’s crafty work. From masquerades to mud fests, pilgrim processions to pageant parties, the island-style parties are open to everyone. Through art: It can be seen in the handicraft, design, fashion. Spot it in the churches or the parks. It can be loud like the jeepneys or as clean as the embroidery. Through food: the distinct cuisine came from the comfort food that reminds Filipinos of family, home, and simple joys. Its many-layered flavors are expressed differently from kitchen to kitchen. Take the national dish, adobo. It has as many recipes as we have islands. But we all share it. With islands so diverse, Philippine culture is a buffet or fun and festivity. Wherever we go, we will be welcomed by people as warm as summer and that is the Filipino culture First, is that the Philippines is not an ethnically homogeneous country. There are some 170 languages spoken here and some cultures are very regionals such as the Ifugao art and handicraft. Second, the country was a colony for more than...

...SYNTHESIS AND RELEVANCE OF THE REVIEW A general synthetic route to two DOTA-linked N-Fmoc amino acids (DOTA-F and DOTA-K) is described that allows insertion of DOTA at any endo-position within a peptide sequence. Three model pentapeptides were prepared to test the general utility of these derivatives in solid-phase peptide synthesis. Both DOTA derivatives reacted smoothly by means of standard HBTU activation chemistry to the point of insertion of the DOTA amino acid, but extension of the peptide chain beyond the DOTA-amino acid insertion required the use of pre-activated C-pentafluorophenyl ester N-alpha-Fmoc amino acids. Three Gal-80 binding peptides (12-mers) were then prepared by using this methodology with DOTA positioned either at the N terminus or at one of two different internal positions;the binding of the resulting GdDOTA-12-mers to Gal-80 were compared. The methodology described here allows versatile, controlled introduction of DOTA into any location within a peptide sequence. This provides a potential method for the screening of libraries of DOTA-linked peptides for optimal targeting properties This report describes the synthesis and structural characterization of the indium complex of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid mono(p-aminoanilide) (DOTA-AA), a model compound for 111In-labeled DOTA-biomolecule conjugates.
