Answer in essay format and be sure to answer all of the following questions within your essay.

1. a. Describe Lou Ann’s experiences going to college at Ball State and Harvard? (Chapters10 & 11) Lou Ann always had connections and personal experience with things she studied and read. When she went to Harvard and was working on her thesis, one of the main things she studied was “the confessional novel.” She wrote her these on “protagonists baring their should to the world.” Some of the feelings she always had strong connections with were those of guilt and shamefulness. This was because she was always trying to help make her family normal. The topics she studied and the experiences she went through help to really mold her as a person.

b. From your experience as a college student, how can you relate to Lou Ann? I have taken many classes and read a lot of material in college that I can connect to. Writing a paper on that material definitely helps you feel more comfortable and confident as a person. I think a lot of people take this approach in college because it helps them understand the world.

2. What happened when Lou Ann’s Grandpa told her mother that he loved her and she didn’t understand? How did Lou Ann feel? (Chapter 12) Lou Ann was devastated from this experience. This event made it clear that her Grandpa did not make her mother away of what it was liked to be loved by someone in your life. This casued a major disconnect. It is a sad feeling to love someone that doesn’t understand what it even means. I think this is representative of a disconnection between the deaf and hearing community. She struggled to cope with this and was very hurt that her mother did not know what love felt like.

3. Describe some of Lou Ann’s interpreting experiences in New York City. (Chapters 12 & 14) When she first started interpreting in NYC, she started to teach sign language. She also was a great aid for the deaf in court because she could interpret for them. It was frustrating though because there was a limit on how much she could do because of legal matters. There was an Oralist teacher that offended her saying “ children of defectives feel guilt.” This was extremely offensive to her but even though she thought this kind of interpreting was crazy she still got satisfaction out of it and continued to do it.

4. Tell about Lou Ann’s experience observing, researching and hanging out with the deaf street gang The Nasty Homicides. (Chapter 13) She hung out and observed these people because she wanted to know more and understand their culture. This was a deaf gang and this was the only thing that everyone in the gang had in common, otherwise they were very diverse. They were not literate and their mission was to show everyone that although they were deaf they could be a very powerful group of people. They lived in a bad area and the gang did not have as many people in it as she initially thought. The members used exaggeration to feel more powerful then they were.

5. How did Lou Ann’s perception of her parents change and how did this affect her relationship with them? (Chapters 15, 16 & Epilogue)

After she observed the deaf community her perceptions of her parents changed. It went from feeling guilty to feeling very proud of them. She understood that there was nothing she could really do to help her parents to be proud of them the way they were. One major factor that changed was that fact that she learned that her parents had to desire to change. They enjoyed being deaf and she was very proud of that.…...

...compiled using a combination of primary official sources and third-party data. Group chief executive’s introduction Welcome to the 60th anniversary edition of the BP Statistical Review of World Energy. Sixty years is a long time, and the energy world has seen breathtaking change over this period – in technology, in political and economic systems, and in many other facets of the environment in which companies like ours operate. And yet the need for rigorous information on global energy seems more important today than ever. The data has changed dramatically – but this Review’s purpose remains the same as it was in 1951: to provide the most timely, objective global energy data available. The Statistical Review has evolved in response to changes in the world’s energy mix, as well as the increasingly global markets that distribute that energy. What began as a review of global oil data has expanded over the years to include natural gas, coal, nuclear energy and hydroelectricity. Additional online content was added as the internet grew in importance. This year, we are including for the first time in the printed Review tables on renewable energy. The story told by the data in this year’s Review is that of a strong rebound of global energy consumption in 2010, following the global recession. Consumption growth reached 5.6%, the highest rate since 1973. It increased strongly for all forms of energy and in ......

...English Essay Rewrite Compare and contrast Text A and Text B Text A- Satirical Elegy on the death of a late famous general Text B- An obituary of William Davidson Both texts are similar, in the fact that they both are reminiscence on a person’s life after their death. Many differences, however, can be seen throughout the poem written by Jonathan Swift and the Obituary. The opening of both Texts is contradictory as Text A opens with a series of exclamations, ‘His Grace! Impossible! What, dead!, ’which gives an impression of surprise at the death but not a sense of grief is aroused. On the other hand, Text B embarks with a compliment ‘was in his element at the heart of the action’; both openings give a clear implication of the withdrawal of the rest of the text. The structure of both are also at a contrast, Text A is an elegy so Is a farewell to the dead but the fact that Swift writes a satire elegy therefore removes the traditional aspect of an elegy. Text B is an Obituary, but although also a farewell to the dead, it is read at a remembrance or a funeral so is written with aspiration to honour William Davidson and not undermine him in the way that Text A is. Text A is written with a sarcastic and mocking tone, through the poem it is highlighted that the general has earned the disrespected he has received through the mention also of his failures with use of the parallelism of ‘Nor widows’ sigh, nor orphans’ tears’ which gives the impression that no grief is......

Text Response Night

...The novel Night presents how Elie Wiesel changes in response to his concentration camp experiences. The separation from his loved ones and the horrible conditions of these camps affects Elie immensely, altering his perception on faith and transforming his physical appearance throughout the experience. The overall ordeal Elie experienced desensitised him to violence and death, affecting his emotions. Elie was transformed by his loss of faith in god and humanity. His loss of faith in humanity and god can first be identified when he arrives at Auschwitz and isolates the ‘smell of burning flesh’ and watches as they throw a load of ‘little children’ into the flames and begins to understand that ‘the world is not interested’ in those of Jewish faith. Elie begins to reject his faith and blame god for what was occurring. ‘Why should I bless his name…What had I to thank Him for?. The hanging of the ‘pipel’ boy was possibly the most critical moment where Elie lost his faith in humanity and belief in God altogether. As the boy ‘struggled between life and death’, Elie realized his God was ‘hanging here on the gallows.’ Elie’s loss of faith was complete. The suffering Elie underwent ‘consumed’ his ideals and beliefs, therefore altering his emotions. Elie’s had to ‘become a different person’ to survive the ordeals of Auschwitz leaving only ‘a shape that resembled [him]’, his emotions ‘devoured by a black flame’. Once being a ‘spoiled child’ Elie was forced to adapt to the......

Describe and explain the role of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen in photosynthesis. Describe and explain the role of water in photosynthesis. Describe the two phases of the photosynthetic process. How do they differ in terms of their inputs, outputs, energy requirements, and spatial locations in the plant? Explain why Rubisco is possibly the most important protein on the planet. Explain how the eruption of a large volcano could lead to changes in the earth’s atmosphere, and consequently, life on earth. You are studying the carbon dioxide consumption at different levels of a forest. You have a portable leaf chamber and sensors attached to the data logger interface and can measure the photosynthetic rate of leaves on trees in a forest at different parts of the tree; high up, in the middle, and on lower branches. Below are the ‘raw’ data from your measurements. Assume all leaves completely cover the 9 cm2 chamber. Find the CO2 exchange (umole/m2/s) for each species at each level in the trees. If you present this to the class, prepare a clear explanation of how you arrived at your answers. Explain the differences between the values of CO2 exchange in the three levels. If you are presenting this to the class you should look for current studies about this topic and its......

Dreamworlds 3: a Response

...Payton Gordon September 14, 2013 Sociology 1 Dreamworlds 3 Response While watching the film, “Dreamworlds 3: Desire, Sex and Power in Music Video”, I was not at all surprised by the negative messages that were displayed. I have always noticed the disrespectful attitude towards women and felt an annoyance with the lack of desire and action to stop it. Most of the male friends I have are entertained by this type of media and enjoy the images they are shown. The images in music videos definitely reflect standard adolescent heterosexual male fantasies. For example, the song “Stacy’s Mom”, by Fountains of Wayne, presents a young boy obsessed with his friend Stacy’s mother. In Dreamworlds, the narrator describes the mother as a woman who, “obligingly undresses in full view of anyone who happens to be watching, receives a public, full body massage, and of course practices her stripper moves in the dining room table” (Jhally, Dreamworlds 3: Desire, Sex, and Power in Music Video). After seeing these erotic images, the young boy goes into the bathroom to pleasure himself while he visualizes the mom in his head making it clear that males should identify with adolescent desires. Music videos portray femininity in a negative way and masculinity in a more appealing way. On the femininity side, sexuality is very important. Jhally describes the image of females as “ravenous creatures who desire sex at all times” (Jhally, Dreamworlds 3: Desire, Sex, and Power in Music Video). Women......

Response 3 Cultural Diversity

...Response 3 Anna Coronado Lamar University Tiffany, I appreciate your comments on the needs to stay current with the cultural changes and growth that continue to take place with students. The population growth of Hispanic and African-Americans has increased to a new level that in the near future the minority will become the “majority”. A good example of this trend is the student population in my school district which is made up of predominantly Hispanics, while Anglo-Americans make up about 10%, and African-Americans & others less than 5%. The attention to these changes in demographics is indeed important in providing assistance with the specific needs of the students, and their families, in an effort to help the student become successful. Based on the matter of cultural issues as mentioned in Chapter 5 of our text, I recall another cultural aspect in need of consideration- family dynamics. In the latest revision of the ACA Code of Ethics, the subject of cultural diversity is addressed. Multicultural and diversity issues have changed the way counselors view the concept of family. (Erford 2011) This means also considering other household members who may, or may not, have a biological connection with the student such as stepparents, foster parents, second mom or dad, grandparents, and so on. This concept is reflected in the change from the term “family” to “support network” in the 2005 ACA Code of Ethics. (Erford 2011) It is because of this change of family......

As you read, you should also try to make connections to other things you have read or even in your own life experiences. After you read: Write your first paragraph- a summary of the article. First, you will write the “name of the article”, the author, and the publication it comes from. Then you will write a sentence that contains the main idea of the article and 3 to 5 supporting details. To Text or Not to Text

...To text or not to text Text messaging has become a convenient way to communicate or maybe an obsession. Texting as is it is commonly referred to today, allows individuals to literally to express their thoughts, information, and maintain relationships with the tips of their fingers. The use of the text message has redefined the way in which our society communicates with each other. Would you believe that 11% of people have sent a text message during sex! Wow! This trend seems to have become an addiction. Text messages are usually read within 5 minutes of being received and responded to instantly. Though this function has many benefits, it has created several negative problems as well. The cost to ones safety as well as the general public has made texting a highly debated subject. I prefer to just pick up the phone and make a call. It’s quick, it’s easy and if you don’t get an answer, you just leave a message or call back later. Thought of as a convenient way of communication, texting with technology advances faster than etiquette has contributed to the erosion of our society. The power of text messaging is one that has redefined how the world communicates and those that choose to use it have a responsibility to use it correctly. Text messaging allows for individuals to maintain person relationships for those that do not have the ability to see one another on a regular basis. As a study showed, the average teenager uses the text message for about 54% of their interactions......

The American Dream Analysed Through 3 Related Texts

...The American Dream is a set of morals and ideals brought to American by the Puritans from England. These ideals have constantly been critiqued though poetry, film, and literature over time. Through the poems A Lone Striker by Robert Frost and Advertisement For The Waldorf Astoria by Langston Hughes and the film American Beauty by Sam Mendez, three main themes are prevalent. These being work, wealth, and nature/beauty. These themes all relate to each other and play a role in the discussion and reflection of the American Dream through the 3 texts. The importance of hard work is the foundation of the American Dream. The poem A Lone Striker shows us the need for employment in order to live, but how there is the contrasting feeling of longing to be somewhere else. This longing to leave the working life and retreat, is a reflection on the original ideas of the American Dream. “He knew another place, a wood, and in it, tall as trees, were cliffs; and if he stood on one of these, twould be among the tops of trees”. This phrase instantly gives us the imagery of the woods and nature in the surroundings. It is a contemplation of what the man in the poem could really be doing with his time, instead of waiting for his job. This phrase uses rhyme between the words “these” and “trees” and uses a reminiscent tone to convey a longing for the woods. In the same way, American Beauty, in the scene where Lester is at work, sitting at his desk taking a call. The tone of his voice while......

The Text

...The text under stylistic analysis is written by Joyce Carry. It deals with the author’s emotions and feelings towards Clare, Tutin’s wife, who lost her husband. This text is about one businessman Tutin who tell in love with his secretary and wanted a divorce. After having a conversation with his husband, Clare was resigned after all. She thought it would be stupid to try to hold him against his will and he’d only hate her. Then we meet an Old Mrs. Beer who was the widow of a canon. This comparison the author used to show us that the old lady became a widow long ago and probably used to live alone. Then the author describes her appearance and her character . She was a short, stout woman with a red face and a heavy jaw — a pugnacious and indomitable face. And having known this description we can say it was a bossy person who liked to give orders to other people. The author compare her face with the faces in boxing booths, who have been in the ring all their lives and lost all their fight but still follow the game, in order to show that she already «lost her fight», but anyway like giving arbitrary commands . And when she got to know about this arrangement she came without any warning and broke into Tutin’s office, with an umbrella in hand as if about to beat him. This comparison author used to underline she had very serious intentions as to his son-in-low. «This was in the presence of the secretary who was taking a dictation — not Phyllis was no longer a secretary». And...

Response

...A TWO-PAGE RESPONSE TO CONRAD’S HEART OF DARKNESS This paper seeks to give a response to Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Heart of Darkness centers on Marlow and his journey up on the Congo River to meet Kurtz, a civilizer. His quest reveals dehumanizing effects of colonialism and brutalities meted upon the people of Congo by the company’s agents and, he finally learns the truth about Kurtz, a universal genius. Colonialism, imperialism, savagery verses civilization, and racism are the most common issues explored in the book. My major appreciation of the novel lies in how Conrad presents the theme – the horrors associated with imperialism. His concrete descriptions paint various pictures that make it so real for readers to imagine and feel the pain and trauma of the natives of Congo during the era of colonialism. Imperialism is defined as the policy of forcefully extending a nation’s authority by the establishment of economic and political dominance (The Chambers Dictionary). Some textual evidence of the theme, horrors associated with imperialism, are presented below: Forthwith, the natives were made slaves by their colonial masters and were treated as savages. Marlow confirms this, ‘A slight clinking behind me made me turn my head…and all were connected together with a chain whose bights swung between them rhythmically clinking’ (p. 10). Another instance is revealed in the text by Marlow. He becomes the eye of narration for Conrad, and this process further adds to the many......
