An Effort in Futility

...An Effort in Futility Communications 220 June 11, 2012 Kimberly Artis-Pearce An Effort in Futility The creation of the “War on Drugs” has had many negative impacts on the American people, with an annual cost of $40 billion, little or no impact on illegal drug use by the youth of this country, and by adding to the fear amongst doctors for prescribing the necessary drugs to combat pain for fear of sanctions by the federal government. As C. S. Lewis once wrote, “Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” This quote by C. S. Lewis provides us with a perfect example of why the so called “war on drugs” has had horrible consequences for the public of the United States. With members of the Federal government continually trying to expand the role that the government plays in our daily lives, the drug war has provided numerous reasons for the government to intrude into the American peoples private affairs. In addition to the overwhelming amount of money that this “war” is costing the people of the United States, the government has funded its own studies and found that the number of people who do drugs on a......

Sustainable Efforts for Innovation-Lego

...recession in the global market. The LEGO Group achieved record-breaking profits in 2011 that secured the health of the company. Interestingly, not far from this climb, the LEGO Group had a deep retreat in the late 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s. Major strategic efforts such as theme parks, Clikits craft sets (marketed to girls), Galidor (an action figure) couldn’t respond to management teams’ goal, and brought failure. As a result the LEGO group created bad financial results: their profit margin was -2.5 and Return on equity was -3.5 in 1998. What intrigues me, as one of thousands of enthusiastic users of its products, is a simple curiosity about what kind of sustainable efforts could enable the LEGO to survive from the turbulent recession and gain even better market share. In order to observe the effective management strategies, this paper will trace the new or consistent strategies under the current CEO, Jørgen Vig Knudstorp (2004 - current). In addition to this, I will take a brief look at progress reports to get better sense of what the LEGO Group’s brand positioning and analyze the annual reports to observe financial status. Some financial ratios need to be drawn for a journey to discover how LEGO’s innovative efforts are effective. 2. Brief History of the LEGO Group Ole Kirk Kristiansen founded the LEGO GROUP, a privately held company based in Billund in Denmark, in 1932. The company has passed from father to son and is now owned by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, a......

Many people say "easy money earned but not for good employees." Good quality workers to help improve the performance of the organization. Intensive schemes can increase production, but it can also affect quality One of the main purposes of intensive scheme is to make employees work harder. This scheme can be successful if; reward is concerned with the, reward is commensurate with the work done individual can control the progress of work, quick benefits received by the employee. If workers were more concerned with the production of large to expect a reward, of course it will affect the quality of the production. In this regard, the percentage of low-quality goods will increase. Many firms are willing to give bonuses to employees based on the quality of production relative to the quantity of production. All human beings need to be evaluated either for themselves or for their achievement. Intrinsic motivation serves to give employees the opportunity to make quality work and can be appreciated. However, it is necessary to use the reward money as an extrinsic motivator. All employees must receive both forms of reward to maximize their performance. Tender of Performance Indian Contract Act

...PERFORMANCE OF CONTRACTS Definition of TENDER OF PERFORMANCE with respect to contract law is that, "It is an offer or attempt to do what is required under a contract or under the law." or "An offer to perform an obligation in satisfaction of the terms of a contract is called tender of performance." Let us define a 'tender' and 'performance' first. Tender means , "An offer to carry out work, supply goods, or buy land, shares, or another asset at a stated fixed price." To 'perform' means to carry out, or to accomplish, or to fulfill a specified task or action or function. Therefore it can be said that, tender of performance means to carry out certain work which one had offered to do. A tender may be of money or of specific articles; these will be separately considered. Of the lender of money. To make a valid tender the following requisites are necessary: 1) It must be made by a person capable of paying - for if it be made by a stranger without the consent of the debtor, it will be insufficient. 2) It must be made to the creditor having capacity to receive it, or to his authorized agent. The condition on which the debt was contracted must be fulfilled. The tender must be made at the place agreed upon for the payment, or, if there be no place appointed for that purpose, then to the creditor or his authorized agent. When a tender has been properly made, it is a complete defense to the action but the benefit of a tender is lost, if the creditor afterwards demand...

Integration Efforts in the Caribbean

...INTEGRATION EFFORTS IN THE CARIBBEAN ESSAY Sir Arthur Lewis in 1965 wrote ‘these islands did not start on the federal road in a fit of idleness. They start because it was clear that a federation is the only possible solution to their problem.” To understand what Sir Arthur Lewis meant regional integration must be defined. According to Carbough (2004), regional integration is a process of eliminating restrictions on international trade, payments and factors of mobility. Full regional integration is the economic, social, legal, political, business and environmental factors into one common regional space. There are six levels of integration which are the trade association, free trade area, customs union, common market, economic and political union. Over the past decade regional integration movements have been undergoing tremendous pressure as they attempt to sustain viability. Hippolyte- Manigot (1979) stated “Since the mid 1970s, so serious have some of these difficulties been that practitioners and analyst of regional integration have indicated their doubts about the viability of regional integration.” The first effort for integration took place in 1958. This was known as the West Indies Federation. The federation faced several problems but what really led to the demise of the federation was fell apart in January 1962 was the withdrawal of Jamaica. This withdrawal was to lead to a movement within Jamaican for national independence from Britain. The withdrawal of Jamaica......

Efforts to Reduce Ozone

...EFFORTS TO REDUCE OZONE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Team A SCI/362 June 29, 2011 Kenneth Rayford “EFFORTS TO REDUCE OZONE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA” The Los Angeles Basin is a plain that lies between the Pacific Ocean and mountains to the north and east. During the summer, the sunny climate produces a layer of warm, dry air at upper elevations. Southern California counties are where almost 15 million people reside. South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is a governmental organization established in 1977 to deal with the historically poor air quality in the area surrounding Los Angeles. Air pollution injures organisms, reduces visibility, and attacks and corrodes materials such as metals, plastics, rubber, and fabrics. The respiratory tracts of animals, including humans, are particularly harmed by air pollutants, which worsen existing medical conditions such as chronic lung disease, pneumonia, and cardiovascular problems. Discussed in our paper will be several key points that will highlight very important details in regards to the efforts to reduce ozone in Southern California. Topics to be discussed are; described the historical development of the issue, the stakeholder’s involvement in the issue, and the long term effects of the problem, the responsibilities that arise from the ethical position and try to find a solution to this major problem. Air pollution in California began just after World War II. Southern California has been known to have the......

Effort, Reward & Dissatisfaction

...Effort, Reward & Dissatisfaction MGT1000 - Organisational Behaviour Essay 1 There are certain choices in life that dictate all future pathways and opportunities, that will shape a life of bliss or misery; job choice is one such decision. The thought processes and factors considered in such a process are complex and varied; however there have been studies that attempt to explain and quantify this decision process. This essay will apply two of these models, namely Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory and Vroom’s Expectancy Theory to the decision process of Michael Stirling and the choice he must make between a Deputy Principal position at his current school, or leaving to take up the prestigious position of principal at the International School of Melbourne. Through application of these theories, focusing primarily on motivation and job satisfaction variables, it will be clear that Sandra, Michael’s wife, opinion that the ISM position is a better fit for Michael is a reasonable statement. Although the role of Deputy Principal Head of IT is a closer match for Michaels expertise and passion, it will be proposed that this role will have to overcome greater factors of potential dissatisfaction and that the Principal postion contains motivators that will sustain for a longer period. This analysis will provide an insight into the internal thought processes and relationship to the discussed theories which will be summarized into a conclusive judgement. ‘Motivation can broadly......

Oracle vs. Peoplesoft: a Hostile Tender Offer Analysis

...SAP and Siebel; however, as the ERP space began to see dramatically reduced growth, PeopleSoft’s sales began to lag. Company leaders saw the acquisition of smaller J.D Edwards as a way to bolster and expand its business into enterprise management and supply chain solutions. Although this acquisition would place PeopleSoft in a better position to compete with market leaders, it never got a chance to enjoy the hype and excitement. Oracle announced its tender offer takeover of PeopleSoft and Oracle CEO, Larry Ellison, further announced that that the company would discontinue PeopleSoft products once the merger was complete (although product support for existing customers would continue). PeopleSoft faced significant challenges. The true intention of Oracle was unknown, and a personal conflict between the PeopleSoft and Oracle CEOs added complexity into the issue. The unwelcome tender offer cast a cloud of doubt upon PeopleSoft’s future and required that the board seriously consider Ellison’s offer. Challenges of the Tender Offer Since Oracle announced that they would discontinue development of PeopleSoft products if the acquisition went through, PeopleSoft’s customers, both existing and potential, became concerned about the ability to maintain a relationship with the company. With its future in question, PeopleSoft’s sales leads were allegedly being put on hold or simply evaporating. How to shore up the confidence of customers and stabilize the sales, therefore,......

Recycling: a Waste of Effort?

...industrial waste is the responsibility of the generator. A firm’s or government’s decision to manage this waste is a matter of weighing the costs and benefits associated with the initiatives that they undertake. Some of the methods of waste disposal are land filling, incineration, resource recovery which includes recycling and reuse of waste, and the avoidance of waste creation otherwise known as reduction. However, each of these methods has its own cost and benefit. This report looks at recycling as a method of waste management and its impact on the environment. A recurring debate that surrounds waste management is whether recycling has any genuine benefits to the environment or is just a waste of time and resources. Critics of recycling efforts often suggest that it more energy is used in getting the materials to the recycling facilities than we save by actually recycling them. First and foremost we need to understand what recycling is about. Recycling is the processing of used materials into new products in order to prevent the waste of potentially useful materials, to reduce the consumption of raw materials, to reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution and waste pollution (from land filling) and lowering the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Over the years there has been considerable attention given to recycling as a method of waste management. The benefits of using this method are that it conserves the natural resources, reduces the amount of waste......
