Teams in the 21st Century The most important skill individuals will learn in college is working in groups. Groups consist of two or more individuals grouped together by employers or instructors to reach a common goal. Group work is also used in other organizations that include political and religious organizations. Working in groups has advantages and disadvantages. In past experiences working in groups, some individuals were not able to complete his or her portion of the assignment by the deadline or not at all. These are not positive experiences to receive when working in groups. When an individual does not meet the deadlines set by fellow group members, it delays the whole group from completing the assignment. When an individual does not complete his or her portion of the assignment, his or her fellow group members are pressured to complete the assignment. Communication between group members is important to avoid these situations. Communication keeps group members informed and may provide additional help if needed. Employers use groups when the company has a special project or a business proposal. Employers gather individuals together based on the individuals skills or talent to successfully reach the goal. Working groups are also used in education to teach students to work together as they will when they become employed. There are many advantages of working in groups. These advantages are improved performances, member satisfaction, learning, cultural sensitivity, creative thinking, and civic engagement. Somebody is watching every step you take. Doesn’t that creep you out a little? These children were a variety of different ages, from three to ten. The format was both structured (during the classes) and unstructured ( in between). Girls are very giggly. Their communication style was very dramatic. During their unstructured time, girls of all ages were running around, giggling, happy and being overly expressive. All the girls smiled and were generally happy. Some of the girls communicated with more body language than the others. I volunteered as a timer, which allowed me an up close and personal view of the kids I was observing. There were three separate swim teams participating in the meet, which totaled around 60-80 swimmers. There was 4 distinct age groups that competed: 8 years old and under, 9 & 10 year olds, 11 & 12 year olds, and 13 & 14 year olds. My nephew competed in the 9 & 10 group, and my niece swam in the 11 & 12 group, so naturally I focused more on those swimmers. This observation allowed me a great insight into many of the social customs and practices of a 21st Century student-athlete. At the beginning of the meet, I observed many swimmers exhibiting a great deal of anxiety. They frequently complained about the events they were signed up to swim, and felt unsure about how they would do in the events. Their postures were often hunched over or bunched up, and their tone was often muted. As the meet progressed and they realized that their reservations were unwarranted they became more boisterous, and confident about their next events. Their posture improved, and they began to exhibit more energetic postures and motions when lining up for their events.
