Studying Leadership

Studying Leadership Leadership is a vital part in any organization. Although there is not one set definition when it comes to leadership, words that are often associated with leadership include guidance, facilitator, and structure (Yukl, 2010). “After a comprehensive review of the leadership literature, Stogdill (1974, p. 259) concluded that ‘there are almost as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept.’” (Yukl, 2010, p. 2). As convoluted as this concept may be, it is undeniable that such a complex behavior is not an easy task. Thus, there are several different approaches to studying leadership. Among these approaches is the situational approach.
Situational Approach
The situational leadership theory, developed by Dr. Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard, focuses on the importance of contextual factors that manipulate leadership practices. “Major situational variables include the characteristics of followers, the nature of the work performed by the leader’s unit, the type of organization, and the nature of the external environment” (Yukl, 2010, p. 14). According to the situational leadership theory, the style of leadership that should be used is based on the maturity level of the followers. There are four types of maturity levels that range from high maturity to low maturity. Based on the maturity level of the group, there are four leadership styles that are appropriate: telling, selling, participating, and delegating (Hersey & Keilty, 1980).
Strengths and Weaknesses
The situational approach to studying leadership has been very successful. Determining what type of leadership style upon the maturity level of the group seems to be effective in many situations. However, determining the accurate maturity level of followers may not always be possible. That is where…...

...| | | | | | | | Theories of Leadership Management Topics | | Theories of leadershipLeadership has been described as the process of social influence in which one person is able to enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task [1]. A definition more inclusive of followers comes from Alan Keith of Genentech who said "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen." [2] Students of leadership have produced theories involving traits [3], situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values [4], charisma, and intelligence among others.Trait theoryTrait theory tries to describe the types of behavior and personality tendencies associated with effective leadership. This is probably the first academic theory of leadership. Ronald Heifetz (1994) traces the trait theory approach back to the nineteenth-century tradition of associating the history of society to the history of great men.[5] Thomas Carlyle can be considered one of the pioneers of the trait theory. In On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic History (1841) he used such approach to identify the talents, skills and physical characteristics of men who arose to power.Proponents of the trait approach usually list leadership qualities, assuming certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. Shelley Kirkpatrick and Edwin A. Locke (1991) exemplify the trait......

Trait Approach to Studying Leadership

...Trait Approach to Studying Leadership Angela Pierce LDR/531 – Organizational Leadership Trait Approach to Studying Leadership The trait approach was one of the earliest approaches that people have used for studying leadership. “Underlying this approach was the assumption that some people are natural leaders, endowed with certain traits not possessed by other people”(Yuki, p. 13, 2010). During this early period leadership theories suggested that managerial successes could be attributed to the natural extraordinary abilities that people possessed such as tireless energy, penetrating intuition, uncanny foresight, and irresistible persuasive powers. This process is what was used in identifying what/who makes a great leader. It was also assumed during this study that some people just were born with leadership traits, while others were not and for those who did not possess these identifiable traits were designated simply as followers. Trait Approach Weaknesses The weakness of this trait approach is that out of hundreds of trait studies conducted and despite this the massive research failed to find any traits that would guarantee leadership success (Yuki, p. 13, 2010). “One reason for the failure was a lack of attention to intervening variables in the causal chain that could explain how traits could affect a delayed outcome such as group performance or leader advancement. The predominant research method was to look for a significant correlation between individual leader...

Reflection: Studying

...need to know. Next the book talks about making a study guide for your classes. They talk about ripping out your notes and putting them together by topic. Then they say to make questions for the study guides so you can answer them to study from. I mark at the top of the page of my notes so I know which exam each page is for. I have a real problem with taking my notes out of my notebook because they can get lost more easily then keeping them in my notebook. Next is the full on studying point, when I study I like to look over past quizzes because majority of the time the professor will put that question on the exam or a variation of a question. I tend to focus more on the quizzes with the lower score. And after it talks about taking the exam and how you should give A+ answers. I go through and read the questions before I start answering and I will go to the ones I know and answer those first, then try at the harder ones. Overall I think I have a very good way at going about taking notes and studying. It isn’t a perfect way though and sometimes I do study material that I do not need to know, but with a few suggestions from the book I believe I can slightly add on to the way I do things and make understanding things easier....

Even though I knew that there are several paths to enter university, this strike affected me a lot. After entering HKCC, I further knew about myself and my interest. ...forth. Internal labor market was measured in this study by the average of three i tems (α = 0.74) that asked respondents to indicate the importance attributed by the organization to its employees as a source of internal recruitment for rank and file employees, professional employees, and managerial positions. Answers 190 • HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, Fall 1999 ranged on a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 was “not important” and 5 indicated “very important”. Finally, training was measured in this study, as in Lawler et al. (1992), using a six-item instrument (α = 0.76) that asked respondents to indicate the percentage of employees in the organization who received systematic and formal training in the past year in a variety of skills: leadership, business areas, quality, technical aspects of the job, and so forth. Control Variables No organization operates in a vacuum, and therefore, it is important to investigate internal and external organization characteristics in order to be able to understand the general relationship between HRM activities and perception of the firm’s performance. This study used a dummy variable to indicate whether the organization belongs to the public or private sector. In order to reduce the influence of the size of the organization and its age, a natural logarithm was calculated using the number of the organization’s employees and its years of existence (1997 minus the founding year), respectively. Another control variable that we used was the......

Studying Abroad

...Studying Abroad “One’s destination is never a place but a new way of seeing things.” Henry Miller. This quote is an expression of my opinion about studying abroad. I have dreamed about travelling to different country, studying there and meeting new people. I had an image about it in my mind that was full of nothing but excitement. In fact, studying abroad is a great chance to discover a new life and challenge myself to fit into it. Now after a year and half of studying in the United States I can say that it was one of my best decisions. I am learning lots of things from it, not only about school subjects, but about myself and life. Studying abroad is an open door for discovery, maturity and acceptance. Studying abroad helped me discover the strong relationship between me and my family. When I used to be with my family, I did not imagine how life is going to be away from them until I traveled to the US. I am now more aware of the value of being around my family, sharing stories at the end of the day or going into a conflict about silly things. Likewise, I understand the necessity of my mother's warm hug and sweet kisses every day. Also, as an international student I am missing a lot of family events back in my home. For instance, my only sister was pregnant a couple months ago. My mind was with her all the time, and each time she would not answer her phone I would think that something bad happened either to her or to the baby. Later on she......

...When reading “Science of Memory-for studying and for life”, this made me think of different methods I use that are helpful to me when I need to study new material. The article talks about a process with 4 different steps organizing, encoding, rehearsing, and retrieving. I do not use all 4 but all could be helpful when learning. Organization is the first step I use to memorize any new material. Notes will not help anymore if they are poorly written on not well organized. You should arrange material so it’s easy for you to review and understand it. Experimenting with different organizational techniques will also help you find an approach that is helpful to you. Encoding is another helpful step of the process. To help your memory process try to pay attention to one thing, do not split your attention with different issues. Talk about key information that needs to be remembered. When you process the information think about it and truly process it, use mental pictures if possible to “double-encode” the information. Next is rehearsing this is the step I mostly use. Some people find it helpful to rewrite notes as a form of rehearsing. I personally take flash cards and put key information on them I’m not too sure about and study from them. Study groups can also help people rehearse, just seeing how someone else interrupted the learning material. When reading the material ask yourself questions, “what did I just read”, “what does this mean”, also test yourself on the information you...

...Studying Religion REL/134 June 29, 2015 Studying Religion Components of Religion are expansive inside of one viewpoint with a composed gathering of convictions with distinctive implications. Contingent upon an individual’s religious faith, this individual will rise above their convictions within their own power. There is no distinction amongst the natural and supernatural, and amongst beings and non-beings (Molloy, 2013). When an individual decides to practice a religion this can be of many choices, such as Judaism, Christianity, or Muslim. In Judaism religion, Jewish believe in Yahweh, Christians believe in God the creator of the universe, and Muslims believe in Muhammad a prophet from God. For a long time the practice of any religion has transcended above from era to era there are numerous practices, which occur today. The outside appearances of religions for example structures, artifacts, and rituals will illustrate how each religion contains their own attributes that differs from other forms of religion. Although, in some characteristics of worship, especially in the sense of spiritual occurrences all religions do share similar essentials in their faith that progresses beyond any individual’s everyday learnings, and it is impossible to be illustrated through language. Studying Locally and Studying Overseas

...Studying locally and studying overseas The advantages and disadvantages of studying locally and studying overseas have long been discussed especially among high school graduates. The options available to pursue further in studies and the choices made will contribute to how a particular individual’s future is shaped. Both studying locally and studying overseas have their ups and downs that could benefit students or causes challenges for them. Studying locally and studying overseas can be compared in terms of cost of living, academic benefits, language and more. First and foremost, the cost of living of studying overseas is higher especially in well-developed countries. With a present low Ringgit Malaysia currency value, it should be tougher for students to meet the basic needs in countries like the United States and Australia. The fees for college itself is already expensive and this does not yet include the expenditure for accommodation, food and transportation. Contradictory, studying locally is much cheaper. Moreover, the presence of government universities help student to pay cheaper college fees. Even if the students don’t study in a government college or university, there are quite a high number of financial aids being provided as loans or scholarships. The expenditure for accommodation, transportation, and basic needs are also cheaper. Furthermore, studying overseas allows the opportunity to travel providing students with new and more experiences. ...Studying Religion Studying Religion Studying religions is going to be very informing since I don't follow any religion in my life. Understanding how and what each religion believes and why is going to be fascinating. I do know there is a God. I know there is a book of stories to help follow your God and way of life, and to also pass on stories of the past. It appears that each religion is a way for those following it to answers the unanswerable questions in life. Why are we here, what do we do here, why do people suffer, why do we die, these are a few issues I believe people pursue religion. Some religions tell you to live a certain way and have guidelines for you to follow. Some have you sacrifice a living thing for God. So how do you decide which religion to believe? You can support your tribe, family, or country and believe in the same as everyone else. You can study religions as this course will have us to, and find a better understanding of a God and which you have a closer connection with. Some choose to praise from home or with family and friends. Well, others have a set day and time to gather together in church. Christianity and Islam both recognize Jesus as a great prophet. Where Judaism has no similarities to Christianity. The difference is a part of religions that has puzzled me, how can some have similarities and other seem to be in a world of their own.
