The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not have some form of universal health care. In his article for the American Journal of Public Health, Donald Light, identifies eight transferable policy lessons from the United Kingdom’s experience with health care that could be used to help the United States’ health care policy. The one transferable policy lesson from Light’s article will be the third transferable lesson which is “Establish a strong primary care base for a health care system” [1]. This lesson highlights that the United Kingdom saw the need for more general practitioners and created incentives to promote more students in medical school to becoming general practitioners. Light states some strategies used by the UK government such as, “the British raised GP lifetime income to equal those of subspecialists.” Light goes on to discuss other changes the UK made in order to support General Practitioners.
Currently, the United States spends the most on healthcare than any other country in the world. With that said, the United States also has a lower quality of care as well as a lower life expectancy than countries that spend less on health care [2]. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it is projected that there will be a shortage of 20,400 general practitioners. With the Affordable Care Act, the demand for primary care physicians is also projected to increase [3]. The main reason why there is a shortage of general practitioners is because of the salary as well as the loans medical students graduate with. The average medical student will graduate with over $200,000 dollars in loans. General Practitioners on average earn $191,401 a year; this is compared to a specialty practice such as a dermatologist who makes an average of $385,088 [4].
