APPENDIX: REPORT

Dear Professor Miller,

What follows is the report you requested on a possible speaker for the event that EU Business School will be hosting. After viewing various speakers’ presentations I have decided to analyze Noreena Hertz’s talk, “How to use Experts” in more depth. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate why Noreena Hertz is the right candidate to talk at the event.
In my opinion Noreena Hertz is a very good speaker. This can be shown by analyzing her Ted Talk in light of the different parameters. Noreena is clear, complete and cordial. She makes use of good language and is articulate. Her message comes across very clearly. Even though she uses complex words she explains everything very well and keeps the audience interested. In fact, even without visual aids the message is conveyed in an interesting way. She makes good use of pauses which allows for the information to sink in. Throughout the talk she also uses tripling when giving examples, which explains the context well. Her use of repetition works well to enforce the idea of the problem that she is addressing. Although she only smiles occasionally her attitude is warm and inviting.
Noreena has a slight natural crouch, however her stance is open and she leans forward to engage with the audience. Her tone of voice varies in different parts and she uses this well to stir emotion within the audience in order to get her points across. She makes good eye contact with the audience.
In terms of logos, ethos and pathos, I felt that there is a good flow of information and that the content is relevant. The audience stays interested as you get the feeling that she knows what she is talking about and that she really means what she is saying.
I can therefore strongly recommend Noreena Hertz as a speaker for the event. I believe that her way of looking at global culture would be very…...

Observations

...Observations Petrina M Murti PSY/230 October 27, 2012 Amanda Martin There are several different ways I have used the scientific process to better understand my personality. Unsystematic observation known as the first step to the scientific process was used in my early adulthood experiences, for many years I thought the people I surrounded myself with were true friends, I started drinking heavily, displayed negative behavior and did not care about my purpose in life. That was my environment and that is how we lived until I started realizing there is more to life than just this. Building theories which is step two in the scientific process was what I used to get myself out of the environment I was once in; I started formulating different questions pertaining to my life and what I wanted out of it. Because of questions and wanting more in life, it resulted in me changing and moving away from the environment. Evaluating propositions describes “the scientist attempts to evaluate or justify the truth of a given statement” (McAdams, pg. 16, 2009) because I observed these so called friends for years and the environment I was growing to become it made me question and theorize the purpose in my life and in turn I justified my change by moving away from the negative environment. Now that I am in school and have goals in life, evaluating propositions have been confirmed from my theories of my life years ago. I am proud that I have grown in to the......

Observation

...The name of the store that I chose to observe is Marshalls. They specialize in bringing brand named clothing for discounted prices to your entire family. The Marshalls store I chose to observe was the one located at 7506 W. Broad Street, Merchants Walk in Richmond, VA. When I went in to do my observation, I did it first as a shopper but as I walked around, I eventually turned into a customer. Before I went in, I knew that I wanted to buy something but I did not know if I was going to find something. I chose this organization because I had been in there before so I knew that they would have something that I may like. Another reason that I chose this organization is because every time I go in, I am greeted with a smile and a “hello”. They treat their customers as if they know them personally. I observed an associate that was in the children’s department. I was in that department because I was looking for some clothes for my 7 year old male cousin. As soon as I walked over there, she smiled and asked if there was anything she could help me with. She stopped what she was doing and helped me walk around and pick out different outfits for him. While I was in there, I observed how even though she was busy helping me, other customers came up to her with different question. Instead of her ignoring them, she asked me if she could help them and return to me. This was one of their policies to help any customer whenever they needed it. I also observed how she listened to......

...Bsma Tolfree Unit 1 Individual Project Scientific Method May 1, 2011 OBSERVATION: During the winter, you spread salt daily on your driveway to melt the snow. In the springtime, when the lawn begins to grow, you notice that there is no grass growing for about three inches from the driveway. Furthermore, the grass seems to be growing more slowly up to about one foot from the driveway. QUESTION: I wonder if the grass growth is inhibited by salt? INTRODUCTION: Salt is a chemical compound (NaCl), or Sodium Chloride. Sodium Chloride has many uses in everyday life, such as in our bodies, in our food, and on our road ways. Having two elements, Sodium and Chloride, each have a number of jobs to do in our bodies. Salt is found in many of our foods naturally, from fish to vegetables, as well as being used for cooking and at the table. Also salt is used all over the world when it snows to prevent slip and falls and car accidents by it being sprinkled on sidewalks and road ways to melt the ice. When salt hits water or ice it lowers the freezing point in an effect known as freezing point depression and melting it in the process. According to (greenergreengrass.com) salt can also affect the pH of soil and can create an unsuitable environment for grass and plants to grow. HYPOTHESIS: The grass that gets exposed to more salt will not grow as much as the grass that gets exposed to little or no salt. PREDICTION: If the grass is exposed to salt then it will not grow as fast......

Observation

...Every day, people all over the world travel to different places out side of his or her home. He or she will encounter many different types of people and different experiences. When this happens, the opportunity becomes available to observe his or her surroundings. I wanted to do the observation experiment at a place I find to be very interesting, it was a Tattoo Shop. This was a place that I felt was on the same standers as a mall and it was also a place that I visited and thought that it would be interesting to observe the people in my surroundings. At the tattoo shop, people of all walks of life come for different personal reasons. Some people came to get a tattoo because they lost a love one and wanted to honor his or her memory. Some came to get a tattoo because he or she loved the art, and some people were there just to support some one else. As I sat in my chair doing this observation, I listen to a young lady who came to the Shop with her friend. She stated that she was there to get a sleeve done on her arm. If you are unfamiliar with what a sleeve is, it is when a person gets a tattoo that goes from the shoulder area down to the wrist area of the arm. This young lady was there getting something that she felt meant something to her. She was getting a picture of a clock with the saying “Only Time Will Tell” drawn on her arm. As I listen to her talk with her friend I could see the sadness in her eyes as she tried to joke with her party. After she was serviced, the......

Speaker Critique

...I have watched many speakers while in the military. There are many times that I come out of the room and I don’t remember the things that they had talked about because of the way they had put it out. It was 1 o’clock in the afternoon at the Sky Warrior Theatre where the audience was all military. It was a mandatory training that we have called Sexual Assault Prevention Response. The speaker was a spokesperson from The Naval Criminal Investigative Service. It was a big crowd and there was a microphone that was set up. I noticed that even though there was a microphone in place that he did not use it to his advantage. The theatre was packed and the speaker did not go on the stage. He stayed in one spot at the bottom left part of the theatre, where it was really hard for people in the back to see him. The speaker talked about avoiding dangerous situations, being aware of your surroundings and trusting your instincts. He needed to work on his opening because he just introduced himself and went straight to the points. He didn’t really add anything interesting on the introduction, so I knew it was going to be a long boring afternoon. He talked about how sexual assault is never accepted anywhere and that offenders are held accountable. He talked about one of the common factors dealing with sexual assault is alcohol. He used a PowerPoint to show the information, which was very detailed and didn’t have that much pictures. He was also just reading off the slides, but explains the......

...FIELDNOTES: A GUIDE FOR RESEARCHERS Fieldnotes: "The observations written by a researcher at a research site, during an interview, and throughout the data collection process" (FW, 501). I. REQUIREMENTS Much of the hard work of ethnography happens in the observations and fieldnotes. At times, you’ll feel as though it’s tedious to take fieldnotes; however, taking detailed notes gives you a set of data from which to look for patterns and ideas. In order to complete your field notes successfully, you will need to: General Requirements Spend at least one hour a week observing your community; While you’re observing, write substantial (3+ pages of observation weekly) field notes. Take time after you’ve observed to write meaningful, thoughtful questions and reflections on the “analysis” side of your double-entry field notes (explained in “Strategies” below). Date each entry, and number each page (This is vital! If you fail to date and number each page of your fieldnotes, you will be lost when it comes time to write up your research and prepare your Research Portfolio for the Celebration of Student Writing) Write legibly enough that someone else could read them. Keep them organized (in your Research Portfolio, among your artifacts and other fieldwork) Taking good fieldnotes requires that to divide the process into two phases: (1) notes you take while you are in the field (Observational/Descriptive fieldnotes) and (2) notes you take after you......

Speaker Evaluation

...Speaker Evaluation I attended “The Speak Up!!” event at the little theatre in Chabot College. It was on May 15, 2014 at 6:00pm. The Chabot College Forensics Team hosted this event. The stage where the speakers were performing was in the center of the theatre. There were rows of seats surrounding three sides of the stage. The audience was mostly a young crowd of Chabot students. The audience seemed to enjoy the speeches. The Duo Interpretation of Literature speech seemed to be the crowd’s favorite. There were a total of six speeches through out the event. My favorite speech was delivered by Franciska Karpovich. She delivered a Persuasive Speech about Gender Shaming. The speech focused on “Slut Shaming”. She spoke about the psychological effects of Slut Shaming. The purpose of her speech was to persuade her audience to boycott stores like Victoria Secret and Abercrombie and Fitch for over sexualizing young girls. She also suggested for schools to start teaching boys how to treat girls. Karpovich claims that girls are bullied for drinking too much and that they are embarrassed of their sexuality. She used current issues about boys taking advantage of girls while they were intoxicated as evidence to support her claims. She talked about people taking sexual assault as a joke because the victims are accused of provoking the boys. According to Korpavich, people think promiscuous girls are worthless. She blames the media for sexualizes girls and eventually leads to slut shaming.......

...Matttt robins Section 1: Observations I observed a child from Early Morning Learning Center at Gateway Community College. There, I observed my student Jerome for a total of five hours in 3 days. The Early Morning Learning Center at Gateway consisted of nineteen children ranging from ages 3 to 5 years old. The center had five adult workers whose job it was to watch and help the children. The days I observed the children were either in the classroom or on the playground. The student I chose to observe was an Africana American by the name of Jerome. As I arrived to the Early Morning Learning center the kids were out playing on around the playground. Jerome was riding one of the tricycles along with a couple other classmates. While riding away from other class mates Jerome yells “you can’t get me”. After Jerome places the tricycle down, a kid playing basketball asked Jerome to play saying “do you want to play”? Jerome begins playing with the other children. The children begin taking turns putting the ball in the basket. Before, placing the ball in the basket Jerome would jump. After a few times, Jerome took the ball to the wall and started getting a running start to put the ball in the basket. Then he began counting to three before taking his running start to put the ball in the basket. Jerome did this another four times. While playing basketball, the children were lining up back to back to see who’s the taller or tallest. When it came down to Jerome and another......

Hospitality Speaker

...Guest Speaker Paper The guest speaker, Dean, gave me a lot of knowledge and insight into the event management and convention center business. He is very successful and managed to make his way through the ranks all the way up to a manager position. The OCC, which he works for is one of the largest and most successful convention centers in the nation. The OCC is the second biggest convention center behind Chicago in the United States. The location of central Florida and these huge buildings help OCC be in high demand for events. The Sears Tower would be able to fit lying down inside of the west building. The North/South building is smaller and shaped more like a box but still is large enough to host several events at the same time. Orlando is considered a first tier city. A first tier city is a city that is able to accommodate 30,000 people or more for an event. Other examples of first tier cities are Chicago, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Atlanta. The OCC is also a nonprofit business. It infuses the local economy with new money and expanding business. According to Dean they have only made a profit on two events the entire time he has worked there. The energy bill alone for a year is nine million dollars, with some of the high traffic months costing one million. Dean went through how he started out as a security guard to the position he is at currently. One of the things he stressed is you will mess up but make sure to learn from your mistakes. He also walked us through......
