Service Learning Project Reflection Paper I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve American TV/Electronics and AC Heating in an advertisement website that describes the services that the company provides. The assignment that has taught me a great new skill of interviewing, listening, and setting forward an advertisement that cost nothing, but to gain a customer base for anyone who mentions they saw the website and receive a 10% discount and an additional 5% discount just because one saw it. The service learning project helped me understand more about the company that is a family owned business that is for the Rio Grande Valley and in the future would like to go beyond. My job was to conduct an interview with Javier Peréz whom is the administrative assistant to the C.E.O. My interview was based on a SWOT analysis and focus on a target market that can use my repair center for services in repairing and air conditioning comfort. This was presented on the website http://myrepaircenter.yolasite.com. Created by me with a tool called yola.com where it is a no cost build your website and publish. The website references to the products that can be repaired and with no obligation of commitment. This is a good pull strategy to get inquiring customers to look further in the services being provided by my repair center. This project taught me a new skill that will benefit me in the future, I am enthusiastic to start working and applying my skills. Marketing is such a strong business to be in, because without marketers there is no business, money, customers, and advertisement. The course has touched on all aspects of the marketing mix, and the service learning project has taught me how to use them. Since doing this project with American TV my repair center is my place of…...

...In class, I was made to be involved in service learning. My initial reaction was skepticism and anxiety. Then I embarked on the research and went to Salvation Army. Based on my research, I think that service learning is a program where students are involved in different activities which are mainly focused on local needs and at the same time developing their academic skills and commitment to the society. I went to Salvation Army which is located on 8145 Highway 6 S, Houston Tx 77083 and interviewed an Office Manager by the name of Quinta Johnson. At first I was nervous but she was very receptive and was willing to have me interview her after telling her the purpose of my visit. Based on the questions I asked her, I received a lot of information about this nonprofit organization. Salvation Army is a nonprofit organization and partly a church. It was established to help the less fortunate, the poor and homeless people, drugs and alcohol addicts by providing financial assistance, housing, rehabilitation and counseling. It does this so that those people in need do not waste away or indulge in any criminal activities. While it provides the assistance, the members spread the Word of God. It also organizes youth and adult programs where they teach on moral issues. Salvation Army goes international as well, they are in Canada, countries in Europe, Africa and South America. The Salvation Army has 10 full time employees, 6 part time and hundreds of volunteers from the whole of......

...Asia Jackson April 19, 2013 ISS 215 Hussain I’ve learned many things throughout this experience but developing patience was the most essential to me. Prior to starting this position in the Service Learning Center program, my expectations were a little different. I expected this program to be strictly about helping young children develop good academic skills. Most importantly by helping them with homework and teaching them information, related to their assignments, that they did not understand. I expected to interact with kids strictly academically and maybe and few games from time to time so that the students can be enthused about learning and actually remember the information that they are learning. I expected this to be a very smooth learning and fun process for not only the children but me as well. What I actually experienced was a little different. The students had so much enthusiasm that they didn’t even wants to sit down to complete their homework assignments. Some of them were difficult to work with. As I stated before in my previous essay, there was a student who gave a lot of the student workers a hard time with his bold demeanor and his stubborn attitude. There was a particular time where I had to work with him and he was very disruptive and did not listen to anything I said. I had to confront the staff members about his behavior so that they can work with him because he was out of my control. Trying to keep a positive attitude, being a little stern and......

...Service Learning Reflection Essay As a prerequisite for a prerequisite it was required of us to achieve ten hours of service learning time, how boring could this be I figured, but what they failed to mention was how much fun we would and could have while achieving that goal. The first experience I was involved with was the “I Have a Dream” program at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School in Overtown. As I can recall it was raining that day, so we didn’t get a chance to do any outdoor activities that was planned, which was upsetting. On the other hand, it was okay because we got an opportunity to interact with the kids a little while longer, which I know they enjoyed. In attendance with us was Professor Gonzalez who had a goat skin drum and a mallet which he used to get the kids’ attention at times and the volunteers as well. I still have a headache to this day because of how loud it was. He also went on to speak about the seedlings that they planted the year before and told a short story, which the kids obviously didn’t like. Also with us was Professor Salinas who went through a series of “brain busters” with the kids, mostly mental math problems and riddles, which to this day I’m still trying to figure out. Well mostly the riddles of course. However, I was amazed by the fact that the kids actually enjoyed us being there, I thought they were going to be a lot more apprehensive towards us but that wasn’t the case. I also realized the situation of the kids and felt sorry for...

...THE EXPERIENCES OF VOLUNTEERING AND SERVICE LEARNING: A CASE STUDY OF A SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT AT “CROSSROADS FOUNDATION” Samuel, Ho Lee, Fullness Social Enterprises Society, Lingnan University, sleeho819@hotmail.com Erica, Kim Man Lee, Fullness Social Enterprises Society, Lingnan University, erica_lee02@yahoo.com Mike, Hyung Min Lee, Dongguk University, wemakemoves123@gmail.com Jacqueline Kelleher, Pace University, jk56646n@pace.edu Katy Kaestner, Trinity University, kkaestne@trinity.edu ABSTRACT The processes and outcomes of a service learning project conducted by a group of five students and engaged with a nonprofit organization are described in this paper. The processes and outcomes are evaluated with respect to the effectiveness of service learning as an educational means and the contribution to the nonprofit sector made by service learning initiatives. The findings include the benefit of the initial ambiguity of the service learning project and the benefit of the project outputs to the nonprofit agency. It is concluded that researchers may need to figure out the absolute relationship between initial ambiguity and the effectiveness of a service learning project and that between project outputs and the benefits received by the organization concerned. It is also concluded that researchers need to study how to keep participants’ passion towards the nonprofit sector after completion of their service learning project. ...Adam Kemp Service Learning Essay #3 The service learning I have chosen for my final chapter of this semester was working the Soccer Games at the Area 11 Florida Special Olympics. The games were a great experience and probably my favorite service learning I did this year. My job that I was to referee the soccer games and I was also in charge of field #2. I did this event not because I needed service learning, but because I wanted to help the kids out. This event I personal went online and looked for and signed myself up. It was for the common good of the people and doing something for someone other than myself. The common good is defined in religion as the benefit of the community. It is the welfare of the whole community, as the proper object of a just law, and is distinguished from individual good, which looks only to the good of a single person. I did this by helping those who genetically are at a disadvantage. The kids we worked with are 16 years and older. I helped them experience something that I and others take for granted. The people I worked with all had the same mission, to help those who are restricted by their condition have a day that they’ll never forget. The participants came in with banners by their area at the opening Olympic ceremony. We as a group did this for the common good of the athletes. The justice part of this is that we as people have rights and the special athletes have the same rights, so why are they not given the chance to......

Service Learning Reflection

...Service Learning Reflection During my experiences with service leaning included: painting a bathroom, cleaning inside and outside of houses, and helping coach basketball. With each of these experiences I learned new things about what I was doing and learned new things about myself. As I went to each of these situations I was nervous as to what was expected of us. In each experience the person was good at explaining what they wanted to be achieved for the time I was there. When helping at the Crittenton Center she was ready for our group and everything planned out as to what each person would do. My group of three was to paint a small bathroom. We were all able to use out past experiences of painting to help finish the project. When helping out with Kayla Nieman, I helped her clean and organize her classroom and helped coach afterschool basketball with her. I learned the most with the coaching. I had to learn how to be patient with the players and allow them time to learn the new skill. When working with Lacey Hallstrom, I helped clean up outside. The experience went well because I had known her previously before. I think this made it comfortable for both of us. When helping out with my family, I found out that I can deal with this bad situation. I think helping out directly with looking for items in the house helped me and my family cherish what we had. Also, with this happening there has been lots of phone calls and paperwork. I have learned how to do some important......

Service Learning and Adult Learners

...RUNNING HEAD: SERVICE LEARNING AND ADULTS Service Learning and Adult Education Jonathan M. Woodward The University of Southern Mississippi Continuing and Community Education, HE 717 Saturday, November 8, 2008 Service Learning and Adult Education Introduction One of the primary goals of the American educational system is to produce productive and active citizens. However, the connection between community involvement and educational institutions is not always nurtured. An innovative new approach in education aims to address this disconnect, service learning. Many times there is a distinction between academic course work and community service. Service learning is a pervasive new tactic that is meant to enhance the academic curriculum, as opposed to just being a second thought or unnecessary addition to coursework. Some research has even revealed that service learning participation has more benefits for students than taking part in traditional volunteer community service (Vogelgesang and Astin, 2000). The focus of one study written by M. Cecil Smith, “Does Service Learning Promote Adult Development? Theoretical Perspectives and Directions for Research,” focused on the effects of service learning as it relates to older adult learners. Smith quickly pointed out that very little research has been done on service learning that involves adult learners. In fact, adults are quite often the recipients of service learning as opposed to participants. Literature......

Service Learning Assignment

...Service Learning Assignment: Houston Food Bank Volunteer Day Service Learning, volunteerism and community service are similar acts of service, but they are certain characteristics that distinguish the three as well. Service-learning involves students in community service activities and applies the experience to personal and academic development. Service-learning course objectives are linked to real community needs that are designed in cooperation with community partners and service recipients. Service-learning engages students in a three-part process: classroom preparation through explanation and analysis of theories and ideas; service activity that emerges from and informs classroom context; and structured reflection tying service experience back to specific learning goals. Volunteerism is any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives. Central to this definition is the fact that volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual. This can include formal activity undertaken through public, private and voluntary organizations as well as informal community participation. Community service is services volunteered by individuals or an organization to benefit a community or its institutions. The terms are similar because they are all benefiting an individual and ultimately an entire community. Also, each method is a learning......

...recesses of the trees following the path downward toward the water. About two hours in, Jim gathered us all back together as a group and brought us to an area which I would have called a deer thicket and told us to start cutting back the vines in this area. We leaned down low to get through the thicket and began to cut the vines in this area. At this point, I was very thankful for the long sleeves, long pants and gloves as I only received scratches on my face as the dirt and twigs clung to my fleece sweatshirt and pants. Around noon, Jim gathered us together again and we went back to the parking area for water and lunch. It was apparent while we were talking that I was the only “new” person to this group as they began discussing the other projects that they completed and shared some stories about previous events. The President of GOSA, Joan Smith, arrived to thank everyone for their assistance and ensure our picture was taken for their website as well as for The Resident newspaper. Sidney made it a point to introduce me to Joan as she was very excited to have me there and potentially add another member to their group. In fact, I will be returning in May to assist them with some planting. I guess they do not need to know that I do not have a green thumb and my idea of fun on a Saturday is not to be cutting back vines. Strolling through the woods picking up trash would have been much more appealing. I thought it was great that the founder of the organization and the......

Project Service Learning

... Service Learning is the cornerstone class that links academic studies at the College of Muscogee Nation (CMN) with the student and the communities. Each will strengthen the other as we learn to use cultural and historical facts and traditions to face social problems, meet human needs, promote civic responsibility and provide a basis for future citizen support. My service project is using volunteerism to improve the quality of life for the children in the Okmulgee area by applying the Muscogee traditions and culture taught to us through the curriculum of College of Muscogee Nation and our ancestors. The first goal of this service learning project is to improve the quality of life for the children of the low-income Okmulgee community residents. A historical assessment of the Okmulgee area provides a picture of drastic change and a people trying to make genuine progress in face of pressure beyond their control. This area, like the United States, has experienced drastic changes in the last fifty years including loss of manufacturing plants such as the Peanut Plant, Phillips 66 Refinery, Americana Window Glass, Ingersoll-Rand, and Ball Brothers Glass. The 2013 U.S. Census Bureau lists the population of Okmulgee as 12, 373 with 25.5% below poverty level. The per capita income for the 12 months (in 2013 dollars) is 16, 981 compared to the national per capita of $24,208. According to Oklahoma Unemployment records the unemployment rate in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma was 4.1%......

Head director Paul Wilson and his staff welcomed me with open arms. During my time there I assisted with many activities which helped me learn some great communication skills and also greatly benefited the staff as well. During my internship I was involved in encouraging mentors of different fields such as Police Officers, Firefighters, Military Veterans and others to come out and support young men who are headed in the right direction. I found my self-surrounded in a setting that I saw openly was consisted on pure professionalism. Every day that I walked inside of that office I received nothing but respect, kindness and admiration. Service Learning and Why It Is Bad

...The two readings this week discusses the importance of examining the limitations of service learning and the need to be critical of the services provided by student. Morton criticises the widely used Starfish Hurling story where a young individual attempts to help washed up starfishes. He considers it a miseducative analogy that simplifies the intricacies of human agency or in this case the starfish, who has no voice or say in the matter of being hurled back into the sea. In conclusion, Morton finds more merit in community service and communication between the parties involved, than individual acts of kindness without dialogue between service recipients and providers. Eby reiterates a similar position highlighting that students may learn from the service learning however; he is critical of the effectiveness of the service provided on a structural level. He points to potential negative effects of service learning such as blaming individuals, neglect in mutual communication and autonomy of recipients being compromised. He points out that a good design in service learning would include balancing the agency of the primary stakeholders which consists of the students, faculty, educational institution, service recipients, community agencies and the communities involved. Firstly, Morton’s piece reminded me of Johnson’s piece on Privilege and Oppression we discussed last week. The one thing that stood out to me was Morton’s criticism of the narrative of individual acts of kindness......
