Seminar 1 Journal In this week’s reading there was one sentence that stuck out at me the most. “Women are considered a minority even though they do not exhibit all the characteristics outlined earlier”, (Schaefer, p.8). I would have never thought that women would still be considered a minority. A number of years ago I would have believed that, because women never used to work. The male was the sole provider of the household and the woman would stay home and take care of the kids and everyday items, such as cleaning and cooking. It hurts to think about my wife as a minority. She works full-time and a mother full-time. Her day consist of waking up at 4:30 in the morning and do her workout then it’s a race to get ready before the kids wake up. She gets the kids ready and drops them off at daycare. After daycare she works 8-9 hours a day then picks the kids up after work. She comes home and often time cooks dinner, cleans-up, and packs her lunch and other things for the next day. When that’s all done she then focuses on getting the kids settled down and ready for bed. The only free time or down time she gets is after the kids are asleep and usually it’s only about 30-60 minutes, because by then she is tired herself. My wife, does these task on a daily basis and for her to be considered a minority just isn’t fair to her. I appreciate everything she does, because without her I wouldn’t have much time for my school work. Women need to be treated the same as any man in today’s society, because they are just as hard of worker’s if not for some harder worker’s than most men.…...

...Will Gorham Journal 1 ENGM 244 – 1 In our first lecture Professor Birdsong focused on three main points: networking, Jordan’s theory of options, and goal setting. Regarding networking, she emphasized that the key to business success is managing relationships. Without successful interpersonal relationships one can expect to struggle finding success in the business world. According to NPR, 70-80% of jobs are acquired through networking and relationships instead of formally submitting an application through a job posting (http://www.npr.org/2011/02/08/133474431/a-successful-job-search-its-all-about-networking). This has proved true in my own life as well. Of all the jobs I’ve worked, I have only been hired once through a formal application process. For every other job or internship I have worked at, I was hired because of the relationships I had with people at the company or through my extended network. The importance of relationships and communication also applies inside of organizations. No matter what type of business one works for they will be constantly interacting with other people, particularly if they are in a leadership position. Jordan’s theory of options describes the phenomenon of how, as a person ages their options gradually decrease and their responsibilities increase. This is particularly true from a career standpoint. Older individuals who have been working in a particular field for much of their lives have much less career mobility than younger people......

Reading Journal 1

...Reading Journal #1 “A Classroom of her own” is an article about the author Danell Jones. Danell Jones is a British author who has written a book called “The Virginia Woolf Writers’ Workshop: Seven Lessons to Inspire Great Writing”. Erika Dreifus, the author of the article, had found out about this book from a friend who had a blog about “new Woolf-related books”. Dreifus goes on to explain some of the features of the book which include the seven short chapters which end with a section that Jones refers to as “writing sparks”. At first I was a little thrown on how this paper was written. It started in the first person narrative about how Dreifus had found out about the book, but then the story proceeds in a third person informative. The entire article is about the facts of the book, how the book is formatted and gives an example from the book. Dreifus describes how Jones invented the person in her book, Virginia Woolf. “… Jones, who has been teaching writing for more than 20 years and holds a Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia University, has invented the persona of Virginia Woolf, writing instructor, and placed this character smack in front of a fictional group of aspiring writers.” Jones has created a fictional character to teach fictional people about how to write good stories or poems. Dreifus then proceeds to describe part of the book where Jones gives an example of Virginia Woolf’s interaction with the fictional workshop participants. Dreifus quotes a section......

...Today I read an article about Juvenile Justice on Los Angeles Times named “ Boy who killed neo-Nazi father poses incarceration challenge”. This is a thirteen years old boy who lived in Riverside County killed his father when he was only ten years old! I think it was a terrible morning on May 1, 2011. This boy use the gun to kill his neo-Nazi dad on the couch in their living room. His father named Jeffrey Hall was the West Coast leader in the neo-Nazi organization, so hid father always beat this boy and he also wanted to kill his kids and wife. I think because under this kind of family environment, this boy does not have parents' love, so he may had considerable, pervasive and complicated disabilities. The boy also told to attorneys he killed his father because he want to protect his family. As a young teenage, he does not have enough knowledge about Juvenile Justice and basic law, so the only way he come up with is to kill his father. However, this article also said that this boy cannot be released into the community and he cannot change. This boy changed schools for nine times, and the reason is “violent propensities”. He wanted to kill his teacher by using the telephone cord. When he was young, his grandmother also cannot take good care of him because he is out of control. I think this boy had “violent propensities” when he was young, and then under the influence of his father, he became out of control when he was ten years old. In the end, he killed his father and......

...Fabela Professor Scott Bulkley ASTR 1 February 24, 2015 Sky Journal Entry 3 Today is February 24, 2015 and this is sky journal #4. The time reads 6:48 p.m. and the whole classroom is going to the observatory. Just before I go in I did this sky journal. The Moon’s phase is waxing crescent and very bright. The location of the moon is 80° SW. The planets that I found were Venus, Mars, and Jupiter again. With a very bright white light Venus is located about 20°-25° SW. Mars as usual this month is really close to Venus just about 1° NE of Venus. Mars location is about 18°-23° SW and blinking a shiny red. Jupiter on the other hand is just rising. The time reads 6:57 p.m. and it’s located about 45° E. The constellations that I found were LEO MINOR, CEPHEUS, and CASSIOPIA. I located LEO MINOR about in the NE sky about 7:01p.m. It’s about approximately 35°-40° degrees NE. CEPHEUS “the weird looking house” is in the Northern sky about 35° N. CASSIOPIA “the big M/W of the sky” was found about 45° NW. Very visible and bright in the sky. Although there were more constellations these ones caught my attention. I got to say the way the moon looked in the observatory was fascinating totally different than the way we see it up at night. With that I must say that the telescope was ginormous and it made me see the moon like it was a cell with all the craters and different shapes. It makes one wonder how did it happen. Well that makes 3 sky journals 7 more to go....

Journal Article Review 1

...Journal Review: Why God Became Man Kenneth Paul Watson II Liberty University THEO 313-D03 July 20, 2015 Critique Upon reading Why God Became Man, the author’s purpose becomes clear: to help the reader understand the incarnation of Jesus Christ and His purpose for doing so. The article goes into great detail in defining incarnation, how Jesus, from eternity, took human form, and His multi-fold purpose for becoming man. Strauss takes an orderly and focused approach to the article guiding the reader so that they understand the basis for incarnation and why Jesus became God-man. While lengthy, the article has logical structure and each point felt concise. The author demonstrated thorough knowledge of the Bible and of the person of Christ as he quoted multiple verses from both the Old Testament and New Testament to validate his claims. There were few assumptions as each argument became validated by scripture. Strauss failed to reference opposing viewpoints and arguments directly, but in a few instances generalized a couple of viewpoints that Christians have of the incarnation. For instance, when discussing the “steps in Christ’s exaltation,” instead of generalizing, Strauss should have provided direct opposing sources to help in strengthening the point. In reading the article the general purpose felt more to teach and explain incarnation as opposed to the defense of the concept, which may explain the lack of opposing viewpoints. Strauss used strong, precise,......

...learned what each assignment was worth and how all the grades for assignments were distributed throughout the course. Knowing this will help set me up for success in CM107. Also, knowing that it is so important that I read the material so that I know what is talked about when the quizzes, discussions, and seminars come so I can give the maximum participation. The second thing that I learned was how important the seminars really are. Knowing that the material will discussed and that I have a chance to talk with the Professor as well as the other students about anything in the unit that I may have a question about is really helpful for me. This will also help me further understand the material so that I can receive the best grade that I am capable of receiving in the course. When I was enrolled in my other online university the classes that had seminars seemed to be a waste of time because it was always off topic or the coursework was not discussed. Knowing that the Professor is making sure that the discussion in the seminar stays on point lets me know that I will be learning and not wasting my time as well as my professors. The final thing that I took away from the seminar was to post my discussions early in the week so that I am able to stay up to date with all the responses to the discussions. Doing this will enable me to make sure that all the questions that were supposed to be answered are done so. This will help me make the best grade that I am capable of and help me......

Attitude: I do not write a lot since I got out of high school. I do text my parents with full paragraphs without using abbreviations. I really do not like writing, but if I have to then I will. With this class, I know I have to write and I’m willing to, but I might take longer writing in third person then first person with a topic I’m not familiar with. I am great at looking at a picture and can write a story based it. I feel comfortable writing in the English class as long as I have the time to write and think about my steps needed to write the paper. Inventory: When I took that quiz, I felt that is was accurate based on who I am. I was between being independent and social. I usually am social when I need to be but mostly independent. I was closely related to creative but was also close to pragmatic. Spatial had a five for a score. I am usually looking at the data and using it the way I think it works. I had a score of six for rational, I also had a score of five for concrete. My rational skills are high, and I think I would work on being more emotional about things that need it for writing. I believe that being concrete is......

...1) Globalization has led to a more competitively intense economic and geopolitical environment. This environment manifests in opportunities and threats both economic and political. Some have said there is no “geography” in this current global environment. Some issues for supply chains in a global environment are: 1) more economic   and political risk; 2) shorter product lifecycles and 3) the blurring of traditional organization boundaries. Another issue is global competition for sources of supply and demand.   Traditionally underdeveloped countries such as China and India have become enabled and can participate in the global economy much more readily. Developing companies such as BRIC and VISTA have developed technology and have been outsourced to these countries. Technology has played a major part in time and distance being compressed. Collaboration opportunities with individuals and companies throughout the globe have increased.   Flow of commerce is multidirectional. 2) Mass retailers like Walmart have been growing larger and larger. These organizations develop, design, produce, promote, and distribute their own products are using their size and power to impact the supply chain to their own advantage. Consumer product companies are giving special privileges to these large retailers and offering customized distribution services; allowing them to run more efficiently and more effectively. 3) The impact of the consumer is much more direct for supply chains......

...Reflective Journal 1 In my first experience working with Liz on the floor, I immediately notice that she has a lot going on. With all her responsibilities, you can definitely see the need for excellent time management and delegation skills. She is responsible for opening a new nursing floor, but is still in charge of running the floor she is currently in charge of. So she constantly needs to be aware of her time management skills, to know when and where she needs to be and at what time. She also has to take into consideration how long a task will take so she does not overbook herself causing others to fall behind on their schedules. According to the textbook, a good leader is able to time mange through the simplest and fastest route, but allowing themselves to continue to be accessible and not tied down (Yoder-Wise, 2011, p. 45). To be an effective leader in opening the new unit, she is able to recognize who is able to help her and delegate appropriately. In my clinical experience, she was able to delegate task to the group that helped make her current floor more efficient (e.g. organizing filing cabinets) and to help move her new floor forward as well (e.g. making signs). A research study emphasizes the importance of time management, and how it is not only a problematic area in nursing, but that it also affects patient care (Waterworth, 2003). Time management is complex with many factors to consider such as work environment and personality. References Waterworth,......
