The Life Cycle Of A Bacteriophage

When we hear the terms virus or bacteria we immediately get scared and start thinking horrible things and want antibiotics to take to feel better or at least think we are doing something good for our bodies. Often we fail to see viruses as agents that can help destroy bacteria and possibly save us.
Bacteriophages have been proven to be antibacterial agents and have been used to treat bacterial infections for many years. Bacteriophage is a virus and this virus infects and reproduces with a bacterium. Bacteriophages have a very interesting life cycle, it starts when the bacteriophage binds itself to the cell wall of the bacteria, it then injects its genome (DNA) into the cell. During this part of the cycle, the bacteriophage can choose between two cycles, 1 being the lytic cycle and the second the lysogenic cycle. If the bacteriophage chooses the lytic cycle the bacteriophage will end up taking over the cell and its machinery in order to reproduce by using the host cells enzymes and ribosomes, the bacteriophage then destroys the host cell, in a phase called lysis, and as a result of the cells destruction many virus particles are released, this is called viral shedding. Had the bacteriophage gone with the lysogenic cycle, the genome that was injected into the host cell merges into the host cells chromosome and the cell machinery is tampered with slightly. During the lysogenic cycle the bacteriophage replicates along with the host cells chromosome and does not destroy the host cell, it is also very rare for any viral particles to ever leave the host cell. Bacteriophages have come a long way when it comes to medicine and what they can do to help with many viruses such as herpes, aids polio, chickenpox and many other viral infections. It’s hard to put in specific terms, but science as a concept (as opposed to just learning facts and theories, or heating stuff in test tubes) has some nice ideas to offer that would be useful for many people to learn and would be useful throughout their lives. Concepts such as logical deductions and inference, parsimony, and not accepting arguments (or dismissals) based on authority but from evidence, and scepticism would all be handy. Teaching someone how to appraise and evaluate conflicting evidence and any bias in that evidence would be useful ‘life skills’ for pretty much everyone.
