LINUX ADMIN PROJECT I chose to do my final project on the Samba server, such as how to set up the server, security, and maintenance. Samba “is an Open Source/Free Software suite that provides seamless file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients. Samba is freely available, unlike other SMB/CIFS implementations, and allows for interoperability between Linux/Unix servers and Windows-based clients.” (source1) The whole purpose of the samba software is to make it possible to operate on many platforms. To install the server you would use the yum command in terminal. You then would enter su for the “super user” to install files as root. Then create a new directory containing three empty files which you'll share. While logged on as root create the new directory “/smbdemo” using this command “mkdir /smbdemo”. Then you would change permissions on the new directory to 770 with the following command “chmod 770 /smbdemo”. Now you navigate to the new directory with “cd /smbdemo” for the command. Add three empty files to the directory with the following command “touch file1 file2 file3”. Next step one would most likely add a user to the server. You do this first by “adding users to the Samba database in order for them to have access to their home directory and other Samba shares.”(source2) Using this command “smbpasswd -a ” you will then be able to add a new samba user. The user must be an existing Linux user or else the command will fail. Then if you “perform the following steps to create a smbusers group, change ownership of the /smbdemo directory, and add a user to the smbusers group by doing these commands in order as follows: “groupadd smbusers” then “chown :smbusers /smbdemo” “usermod -G smbusers don”.(source2) Next I will talk about how to configure the server. “Samba configuration is done in the file /etc/samba/smb.conf. There are two parts to /etc/samba/smb.conf. One being “Global Settings” This is where you configure the server. You’ll find things like authentication method, listening ports, interfaces, workgroup names, server names, log file settings, and similar parameters.” Second being “Share Definitions” This is where you configure each of the shares for the users. By default, there’s a printer share already configured.” In the Global Settings section, at a particular line, depending on which platform you use, you change the workgroup name to your workgroup name. Now, confirm that the authentication type is set to the user by going to the authentication section, while in Global Settings. Again depending on the platform at a specific line make sure there is no hash mark at the beginning of the line to enable user security. “Samba is extremely robust. Once you've got everything set up the way you want, you'll probably forget that it is running. When trouble occurs, it's typically during installation or when you're trying to add something new to the server. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of resources that you can use to diagnose these troubles. Sometimes Unix seems to be made up of a handful of applications and tools. There are tools to troubleshoot tools. And of course, there are several ways to accomplish the same task.”(source3) When trying to solve a problem in Samba, you may want to start with these tools: Samba Logs, Fault tree, Unix utilities, samba test utilities, documentation and FAQ’s, searchable archives, and samba newsgroups. Your best bet as a first step at troubleshooting should always be to check the log files. The Samba log files can help diagnose majority of the problems that Samba administrators are likely to face. Samba is quite flexible when it comes to logging. “You can set up the server to log as little or as much as you want. Substitution variables that allow you to isolate individual logs for each machine, share, or combination thereof.”(source3) “By default, logs are placed in samba_directory /var/smbd.log and samba_directory /var/nmbd.log, where samba_directory is the location where Samba was installed (typically, /usr/local/samba).”(source3)…...

...could offer. Silicon or germanium nanowire-based FETs can potentially push the CMOS scaling down to 1nm gate length, breaking the barrier for top-down fabrication technology in both logic and memory applications. Nanowires can also be used as interconnect materials. On the other side, due to its high flexibility in growth engineering, nanowires may be used to fabricate new electronic devices based on quantum effects, in which the electron tunneling is used for device operation rather than the field effect mechanism. These new generation of devices would lead to nanoelectronic systems with more compact size, less power dissipation, and higher performance. Vertical nanowire nonvolatile memory array with ultra-high density. At NASA Ames Research Center for Nanotechnology (ACNT), we are exploring the semiconducting nanowire-based electronic devices for both logic and memory applications, with an emphasis in high performance, low power, high density, as well as robustness for operation under the extreme environments that space exploration missions would demand.   NANOWIRE BASED ELECTRONIC DEVICES Nanowire-based electronic devices offer great potential to implement future integrated nanoelectronic systems for both on-board computing and information storage. Future in-space exploration requirements include modular electronics which operate for long durations in radiation environments and offer performance similar to that in today's ground-based asystems....

...The key characteristics and differences of research methodologies The methodologies used in research include qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and action research. First, mixed methodology entails the combination of the compilation and analysis of both qualitative and qualitative statistics. Second, action research is an informal methodology that obliges all the partakers to be mutual researchers. Qualitative and quantitative research methodologies are the prevailing methods in research at present (Austin, 1978). Qualitative research methodology obtains an approach to evaluating information that looks at connotation rather than numbers. The statistics, therefore, normally consist of non-numerical data such as words or metaphors. Qualitative research is unbolt and receptive to its subject. There are various key characteristics of this research method. First, the perspective of investigation is not artificial; they are natural. Nonentity is undermined or taken for granted. Second, actions can be understood effectively only if they are spotted in context. Consequently, a qualitative researcher submerges in the setting. Under this method, interviews and observations are the most suitable strategies to be used. Quantitative research methods advance research in a different way and scrutinize the data based on figures and statistics, the consequential data is principally statistical (Trochim & Donnelly, 2006). It entails those methodologies, which include surveys, interviews, and...

As principais características do Samba......

...How To Formulate Research Problem? Posted in Research Methodology | Email This Post Email This Post Formulating the research problem and hypothesis acts as a major step or phase in the research methodology. In research, the foremost step that comes into play is that of defining the research problem and it becomes almost a necessity to have the basic knowledge and understanding of most of its elements as this would help a lot in making a correct decision. The research problem can be said to be complete only if it is able to specify about the unit of analysis, time and space boundaries, features that are under study, specific environmental conditions that are present in addition to prerequisite of the research process. Research Process Research process is very commonly referred to as the planning process. One important point to be kept in mind here is to understand that the main aim of the research process is that of improving the knowledge of the human beings. The research process consists of the following stages – 1. The Primary stage :– This stage includes – a. Observation – The first step in the research process is that of the observation, research work starts with the observation which can be either unaided visual observation or guided and controlled observation. It can be said that an observation leads to research, the results obtained from research result in final observations which can play a crucial part in carrying out further research. Deliberate and guided...

...Installing Samba Connect our server on our virtual network on the shell and install the Samba packages as instructed:   apt-get update apt-get install libcups2 samba samba-common Edit the smb.conf file:  vi (or desired text editor) /etc/samba/smb.conf On the website provided, it is said to look in the global section to remove the “#” at the beginning of the line security = user but actually it is further down. Anyhow you will remove the “#” to enable Linux systems users to log in to the Samba server. Close the file after editing and restart Samba:  /etc/init.d/samba restart Adding Samba Shares Now we can begin to add shares that is accessible by all users by creating the directories (allusers, acctng, adminaffairs, humres, itstaff) for sharing the files and changes to the group:    mkdir -p /home/shares/allusers chown -R root:users /home/shares/allusers/ chmod -R ug+rwx,o+rx-w /home/shares/allusers/ Then at the end edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf and add the following:  vi (or desired text editor) /etc/samba/smb.conf Followed by restarting Samba:  /etc/init.d/samba restart Adding and Managing Users Now we will add users, for this example I used typical names that are common amongst office settings and importantly are short. Then I used basketball players like the following:  useradd lebron -m -G users And set a password for lebron in the Linux system databases for my virtual network.   passwd lebron Then enter the password for the new......

...and Public Relations Herzing University Pamela Zipfel March 15, 2015 Research Program Research Program In developing a research program for a new book store for Herzing University, I would first start6 with a research plan. This would prompt me to use a marketing research plan, consumer research, advertising research and strategic research. “Market research complies information about a product.” (Hall, Prentice 2009) Consumer research is used to see what consumers are in the market for. Advertising research focuses on getting your product out there, example would be social media. Strategic research is the final plan and becomes the base of your research it allows the company to compile information from the social media and what influences consumers to purchase a product. (Hall, Prentice 2009) During the exploratory research process I would start with the literature research process, because it is the cheapest. I would use the census bureau, newspaper, and magazines to collect whether there is a need for a bookstore and what sort of books people would want to read. I would then decide if I need Qualitative or Quantitative research. Quantitative research will give numerical data. Qualitative Research gives a more details, such as consumer behavior. It observes what consumers are interested in and explores the nature of the consumer’s insight on a product. I would choose Qualitative research because it would give me more of an overview on what consumers are......

...Proposal on Research Research is a complicated process in order to find the right resources on a specific topic with the proper literature writing. Researching is to provide necessary information to individuals on a specific topic. Thus, this research can be used to write a paper or papers on a particular topic for intended audiences with the sources you used on your points and assertions. One job the writer needs to make sure he has done is to include a position he is on and that he has compressed or summarized all the research on various sources by focusing on the main key points. The writer also has the responsibility to provide a motivating, stimulating, or activating thesis statement. The writer’s purpose of writing a research paper is to provide specific details on all the sources that have been collected for the writing topic. He also needs to compress all the collected resources into highlighted key ideas from the passages. Also, he needs present a research paper that is consisting of three formats: a summary, a paraphrase, or a quotation. In a summary, you provide important key main points from the source’s idea and write to support the source’s idea. Paraphrase is when a person takes someone’s idea and put it into the writer’s own words. Lastly, quoting is to directly quote from an original source. Even though the writer provides information from various sources that is included to the written paper, the writer must put the researched information into their own...

...qualitative research. A qualitative research design could be primarily used to solve customer satisfaction problems. It is a more straight forward, structured way to seek information from your customers. Through surveys and questionnaires that can be conducted in a number of ways information can be gathered from large groups of participants. Usually they involve closed ended questions, that can effectively organized. The organization of this data is then discussed in the form of numbers and statistics. Using this information the business owner is made aware of a customer’s interest, knowledge, and changes on a product or service. Based on this they can make more informed decisions on the quality of service to their customers. Although a quantative research design can be used primarily it would benefit to use a qualitive research design as well. Part of satisfying your customer is knowing your brand not only objectively but also subjectively. Through quantative research you can monitor your success based on clear cut facts. It does not go into depth as to why your brand is doing well and a qualitive research design can give you insight to customer’s opinions. A qualitive research design is more open to personal feedback. It explores a customer’s thoughts and having access to these thoughts can help in discovering new elements into keeping customers satisfied. A qualitive research is done in form of interviews, focus groups, participant observations and research of other......

Race and Struggle of Samba

...Race and Struggle of Samba Samba exists throughout Brazil, peculiarly in the states of Bahia, Mahranhão, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo. Samba has two popular forms of expression: music and dance. A majority of people identify samba as the musical expression of urban Rio de Janeiro. Although samba is commonly identified with Brazil, the start of samba begins in Africa. According to Marc Hertzman, the origins of samba in Brazil can be trace back to the 1800s-a time when Brazil was still in the process of finding its own national identity. After Brazil freed the last of its remaining slaves, Brazil faced racial and economic divides, but with all this issues samba emerged as a building block of national identity. Samba is something unique that could be embraced by all Brazilians. Samba had an impact on Brazil as nation, but also it had an enormous impact on the individual and the African-Brazilian population. Throughout the world’s history, music has had the capability to tell the story of many slaves. Slaves in both the United States and Brazil had slave hymns. For example, the famous song Wade In the Water, which now commonly associated with the Underground Railroad. Once slavery ended, the sounds of those who were discriminated against changed. In the United States, slave hymns became the sound of jazz and the blues and in Brazil, samba was created. Samba is a word that is believed to come from the West African Bantu word, meaning “to pray” or “to invoke the......

...goal of the research process is to produce new knowledge or deepen understanding of a topic or issue. This process takes three main forms (although, as previously discussed, the boundaries between them may be obscure): * Exploratory research, which helps identify and define a problem or question. * Constructive research, which tests theories and proposes solutions to a problem or question. * Empirical research, which tests the feasibility of a solution using empirical evidence. There are two ways to conduct research: Primary research Using primary sources, i.e., original documents and data. Secondary research Using secondary sources, i.e., a synthesis of, interpretation of, or discussions about primary sources. There are two major research designs: qualitative research and quantitative research. Researchers choose one of these two tracks according to the nature of the research problem they want to observe and the research questions they aim to answer: Qualitative research Understanding of human behavior and the reasons that govern such behavior. Asking a broad question and collecting word-type data that is analyzed searching for themes. This type of research looks to describe a population without attempting to quantifiably measure variables or look to potential relationships between variables. It is viewed as more restrictive in testing hypotheses because it can be expensive and time consuming, and typically limited to a single set of research subjects.......

...or licensing infringement.   However, in 2006 Microsoft found that many of their patents had been infringed upon by several different aspects. The Linux kernel found in most servers was one of them. Microsoft took a big leap going after FOSS for 235 patents.   FOSS is run by   Stallman who was responsible for the GNU Manifesto also known to most as the GNU General Public License (GPL) .   With Microsoft heading the full speed train against FOSS it took a demanding tire on both parties.   While Microsoft, in the meantime was also striking a deal with Novell on its Linux based server support.   FOSS was sure to go under as Linux was the base of its entire open source used in many applications and the applications within Linux   such as samba or Open Office.   The Deal with Novell was made to walk around the GPL of the GNU and expose loop holes for Microsoft’s gain but also creating a pressing dilemma for the GNU.   The deal struck between Novell and Microsoft was a “we don’t sue you and you don’t sue us” which indicates that not only was FOSS involved in patent infringement but also Microsoft.   The Deal included over 200 million dollars to Novell and 43 Million to Microsoft for “license distribution” of Novell’s’   Server software.   The after effects of this deal resulted in a addition to the GPL from Stallman and his lawyer.   This was meant to entrap   Microsoft from making a deal like the one struck with Novell again and prohibit a resale effect of......
