...disbelief. Despite its far-fetched premise and often clumsy execution, John Q is creditable for its attempt to illustrate the inequities and failings of the American healthcare system. It makes its points in dramatic if overwrought fashion. The political message is integral but not at the service of the action that is sustained throughout along with a tension that increases with the deteriorating condition of John Q's son Mike (Daniel E. Smith). The exuberant Mike is the center of the Archibald family. John and his wife Denise (Kimberly Elise) are devastated when the apparently healthy boy collapses during a Little League baseball game. Tests reveal he has an enlarged heart that needs replacing. The Archibald's problems mount when John discovers his health insurance policy does not cover the expensive procedure. The hospital's ruthless administrator, Rebecca Payne (Anne Heche), threatens to send the dying Mike home unless his parents can come up with the down payment of $75,000 required for his name to be put on the recipient list for prospective donors. When the normally law abiding, peaceful John is unable to raise the money, he becomes desperate. The harsh economics of American healthcare afford little room for sentiment. That a so-called civilised society could condemn someone to death simply because they can't afford adequate insurance is unfathomable, but a reality. That is why when John Q, who chooses to be known by the initial of his middle name Quincy,......

Company Q

...Company Q’s recent decisions that directly affect areas of social responsibility appear to indicate that their upper management has instituted policies that are in direct opposition to what a customer-centric company would want. Their Decision to finally carry more healthy and/or organic products is one that should have been made years ago even without the continuing requests of their loyal customers. As a responsible corporate citizen they should try to offer products that will promote the health, happiness and wellbeing of their customers. The fact that their customers have been requesting these products for years only makes this ethical lapse worse. While Company Q shows they can take a step in the right direction by adding health conscious products to their inventory, their choice of products shows they are doing it for the wrong reasons. Rather than pick items that promote healthy living and are reasonably priced so as to be within the budget of most households, they have systematically chosen products with the highest margins that will net them the most profits. This decision implies that their motives are not to help their customers live happier, healthier lives but instead to cash in on their desires to provide better overall life quality for their children and other family members. How is it that a corporation whose continued existence is dependent on repeat business can’t see that having healthy customers who live longer will only increase their total......

Barbie-Q

...”Barbie-Q” At first the short story seems very unusual. The way the narrator describes each Barbie doll in such detail that makes you almost see them before you. But it’s not only the Barbie dolls. Even the flea market is described in a way that makes the pictures come alive before your eyes. But the unusual part is the role the Barbie dolls play. What is so special about these dolls, and what is their role? These are the questions that go through my mind. And my head tells me that there lies something bigger behind the story about these simple dolls. As I read the short story again I can focus a bit more on what is actually happening. It tells the story about two little girls who don’t care how much their toy costs, if it’s a little damaged, or if maybe a piece or two are missing. They just want to play, and that doesn’t require perfect dolls. All they need is a healthy friendship and a well-equipped imagination. Perfection and materialism isn’t everything, and maybe this is what the story is all about. The narrator, a little girl, who with the help of flawed Barbie dolls, accepts that things aren’t perfect, but that perfection isn’t everything, and thereby rejects the quest for perfection defined by society. Instead she speaks of a society, where flaws are a natural thing that shouldn’t matter a great deal. As she speaks of all these flaws, it’s unclear to us if she alludes to flaws of her own, but nevertheless she accepts them, which is something even some adults have...

Sahara

...Short Essay: The Sahara Desert The Sahara Desert is localized in the Northern part of Africa and contributes to about 10% of the continents size. Due to high temperatures of the Sahara, it is known as the hottest desert in the world. In the span of a year, the Sahara Desert will get 10 inches of rain or less. Throughout African history, the Sahara Desert has been a healthy resource to the rest of Africa and other parts of the world. Once known as “no man’s land.” The region of the Sahara has numerous hidden gems beneath its rough, dry, and sandy terrain. The Sahara Desert is abundant in mineral sources such as natural gas and oil. The major source of oil in this region comes from the Sarir field located in desert of Libya. Other useful resources found in the Sahara are iron ore in Mauritania and Algeria; and phosphates in the areas of the Western Sahara and Morocco. The Sahara also contains major trans-Saharan routes that connect trades between Algeria, Niger, and Mali. Due to the terrain of the desert and its trade routes, camels are used widely for the purpose of transporting merchandise. As we learned in the documentary “Scenic Routes across the World-Africa” the salt road has also had a major contribution to the Sahara Desert throughout history. From about the seventh to the eleventh century, gold was abundant in supply and was easily traded with the use of camels. As an economic source for the inhabitants of the Sahara Desert, when the gold trade ended the salt trade......

Company Q and Social Responsibility

...Company Q and Social Responsibility Company Q does not have a good attitude toward social responsibility. They had to close two stores that were not making any money due to the crime rate in the area the stores were located. Due to a lack of trust with employees the company has decided to refuse donations to the local food bank. Both of these situations have the potential to spiral out of control causing a loss of profit for the company and have a negative impact on the stakeholders. A lack of trust between company and employees could cause this store to suffer increased theft, because the employees know they lack the respect of the company. This may cause them to either turn a blind eye to theft, or steal themselves. In regards to the food banks request, donating locally would be a great way to bond with the community. More people will consider shopping at a store that is giving back to the community. My first recommendation would be for Company Q to start a Product-of-the-month program. They could choose to feature a different item every month and monitor sales on that item. This would lower the risk of ordering a large amount of something that will not sell well. If they only order a small amount and feature it in the store for a month, then they would know if it would be a good item to continue to carry in the store. This would be a good way to find out what customers like without spending a lot of money. It would be wise for them to advertise in their store that they...

John Q

...A Look at John Q HCS/235 History of Health Care Utilization in the US November 20, 2013 Brett Robinson A look at John Q Too poor to afford private health care insurance coverage, but lucky enough to qualify for Medicaid John Q faces yet another challenge. John’s father recently suffered a heart attack which brought into question his own mortality. John like many Americans is a working class man who works full time but still under the poverty level and into a substandard and overworked Medicaid system. He like many others has high blood pressure and with his father recent heart attack he would like to be checked out. Due to John’s low income he qualifies for Medicaid coverage, but also has work within his restraints. John lives in a rural community where there are local doctors however none accept Medicaid. The closest primary care physician who takes his insurance is a forty minute drive away. John also is without a car, he relies on a friend or public transportation. There are many mutable and un-mutable factors in this case. John could get a better job, which could result in better insurance coverage. “The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services states that one-quarter of America’s population lives in rural areas”(Jones, 2013). John Q lives in a rural area where his son has heart condition and is in need of a heart transplant and the closest primary care physicians is 40 miles away. John usually gets a ride to work from a friend or relies on public......

Company Q

...Company Q has a reputation to secure in the community. Company Q is hoping to not only keep their current clientele but also build more of it. By donating day old food the store is able not only save on publicity costs, but use the tax benefits for food donation to help with cost. To keep and build clientele the company needs to get their name out in the public eye. To do so Company Q also needs to build their reputation as a company that cares. If a business seems empathetic to the public’s needs more people will support and recommend using Company Q’s services. It gives a consumer the feeling of helpfulness and of giving back. The consumer feels good about supporting a store that cares about the local community. Radio, television, and online and print advertisements all serve to draw customers to supermarkets. Advertising among the top four supermarket chains (Kroger Co., Albertson’s Inc., Safeway Inc. and Publix Super Markets, Inc.) ran combined annual totals of $1.9 billion in the early part of the 21st century (http://www.msgcpa.com/files/Grocery.pdf). When donating food to a local food bank companies are able to save money on those costs. The food banks often times maintain public campaigns and benefit celebrations that advertise sponsors of not only money but also goods. With the food banks doing the advertising of the company’s generosity Company Q is able to project a positive community image and save on advertising costs. When it comes to allowable......

The movie that I have chosen to critique is called John Q. This movie was released in Feburary2002 (IMDB, 1990-2012) and has a little bit of everything in it: drama, suspense, and a lot of emotion. The main actor in this movie is Denzel Washington. In the movie, “written in 1993 during the Clinton health-care-reform battle (Kluger and Bjerklie (2002)” as a nation were struggling with everything, especially health care. Denzel portrays a dad that cannot afford a heart transplant for his son and under all of the stress he snapped. In order to get what he wanted he took all of the people in the emergency room hostage. This movie is filled with emotion and it leaves me thinking, along with others, about what I would do in that......
