Retrospective Narration of “Orientation” “Orientation” written by Daniel Orozco (McMahan 454) was to me, mostly a comical read. I have that dark sense of humor I guess. I liked the way the story was presented. By using primarily first person narration, I felt as if I was the one being shown around the office on my first day of work. I found myself conjuring up question after unanswered question as I was being pulled into a story line about yet another employee. I became less interested in the particulars of who exactly was the narrator, the intended audience, or the office itself; and more interested in the inner workings of the office dynamic. I guess I had not much of a choice since the narrator nor the audience was ever clearly defined. One thing that did break the cycle was when the narrator pointed out “this is your phone.” and “That was a good question. Feel free to ask questions” (McMahan 454), this was the basis for my assumption that I was the intended audience. I found it interesting that there were a number of things “you may be let go” (McMahan 454-457) for. This phrase seemed to squelch my desire to clarify just who the audience was meant to be. No one wants to be “let go” not even me, the reader! The setting was immediately painted with the comment, “These are the offices and these are the cubicles” (McMahan 454). By painting such a dull picture in the beginning, the individual stories became a lot more colorful. The narrator seemed to go from dull to dramatic several times throughout the read. This effectively drew me in, by using statements like “He subjects her to an escalating array of painful and humiliating sex games, to which Amanda Pierce reluctantly submits” (McMahan 455). Discussing such a taboo subject in the context and setting of the read,…...

Narration

...Narration My first serious argument with parents Our society is still very conservative. Among the narrow minded people of our society I never considered my parents as one. They have always allowed me to do almost everything and go anywhere regardless of my gender. But now I know that people change their thoughts and minds according to time and situation. That change was what I was against and thus happened our first argument. Once in every two years each class of our college goes for some sort of trip of 2-3 days and that year was ours turn to go. As most of the students of our class were adventurous and loved hiking we had decided to go trekking to ABC(Annapurna Base Camp). I was also one of the active students who had taken that decision. I was sure that my parents would allow me. I was over the moon just at the thought of that trip for I had always wanted to go there. That trek was all over my mind and at home that was the only thing I talked about to my parents. To my surprise, this time they didn't seem to be much interested in my jabber. It was almost like they were trying to ignore me. But as I was too much into that trek I didn't care about their reaction either. I was making plans with my friends and we were also discussing how to convince their parents. There were only three or four days left for the trek and we were also excited about going shopping for the trekking gear. I asked my parents for money, they usually didn't ask me why I needed the......

Value Orientations

...* Value Orientations in Our School Campus and Barangay Values are the elements of life prevailing in a society. They are the rules by which we make decisions about right and wrong, should and shouldn't, good and bad. They also tell us which are more or less important, which is useful when we have to trade off meeting one value over another. They provide motivation and ground for choice. They shape and determine individual and group’s decision to like or dislike and change or not change something. Thus, knowing people’s value orientation will guide planners, administrators, policy-makers, and agents responsible in implementations of laws and programs. Every individual, social group and institution has its own value orientation. What is value orientation? Value orientation is the principle of right and wrong that are accepted by an individual or a social group. It is a system of principles governing morality and acceptable conduct. In our school, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, various value orientations are present. Students are able to accept responsibility for their own behavior. Definitions of responsibility stem from a shared community understanding, and responsibilities are taught explicitly across the curriculum. The school recognized that the acceptance of responsibility for behavior is developmental and is dependent on students having opportunities to discuss and practice appropriate behavior. Students learn to accept responsibility when they are......

Market Orientations

...(a) Identify and briefly discuss SIX business orientations. Business organisations basically exist to provide products and to maximise profits. But there can be a marked difference in their approach to do business depending on the orientations they modulate their business strategy. The following six business orientations are discussed hereunder: (a) Production orientation: Here the main focus is on the production and management ensures that there is enough capacity to mass produce and whatever is produced it is sold at a relatively low price. Consumers are sensitive to prices and there is less costs associated with advertising and promotion of the goods. Competition is almost inexistent. An example is the production and sale of tomatoes. Whatever amount is produced it is sold on the marketplace. (b) Product orientation: Here management decides to produce a product and production is undertaken without any assessment through proper research techniques being made whether the product is needed or not. Management has at least ensured that the quality and design of the product is good. This type of business orientation is quite risky as it can fail on the market if people do not need it nor are willing to use it in spite of marketing strategies being undertaken. (c) Sales orientation: This concept underpins the need to canalize all energies towards selling the product. The particular product is made available to consumers and salespersons use aggressive selling......

Sexual Orientation

...between man and woman. Sexual orientation has been something that scientist and psychologist have been trying to discover a logical answer on how and why. There have been many theories developed on the different types of sexual orientations and what makes a person have these types of feeling toward same gender. There has never been an answer to this question that has so many wondering. Some believe this could be how the child may be raised, or is this a specific gene that a person is born with, maybe even some type of chemical/hormonal imbalances. Overall it just seems to come down to who you are as a person and that shouldn’t be determined by society or scientist. Sexual Orientation Sexual orientation can be a set of physical and emotional attractions and interest that will attract both sexually and romantically to other people. There are three sexual orientations straight, gay or bisexual. Research has shown that adolescence and young adulthood go thru some stages such as sexual orientation identity (Kelly, 2010). It has been anticipated that sexual orientation and sexual identity that once they are established and accepted that it will remain steady for the rest of life. This does not indicate that people will wake up and one morning they are in a new sexual orientation or identify such as suddenly becoming gay or straight. Alfred Kinsey conducted a research in 1940’s, what an individual had done sexual was assumed to be their sexual orientation. Early in his research......

Market Orientation on Business Profitability

...The Positive Effect of a Market Orientation on Business Profitability: A Balanced Replication Stanley F. Slater UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, BOTHELL John C. Narver UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, SEATTLE Narver and Slater’s (1990) finding of a positive relationship between market orientation and business profitability is retested in a broad sample of product and service businesses operating in a variety of industries. The assessment of the extent of market orientation is provided by the chief marketing officer, and profitability is assessed by the general manager, thus avoiding the problem of common respondent bias. The analysis of the influence of culture on business performance is extended by including a measure of entrepreneurial orientation in the study. The influence of a market orientation on business profitability is then compared with that of an entrepreneurial orientation. The regression coefficient for market orientation (.662) is higher in this replication than in the original study (.501), and the pairwise correlation coefficient for the relationship between market orientation and profitability is very similar in both studies (.362 and .345, respectively). No relationship is found between entrepreneurial orientation and business profitability. Thus, by drawing a sample from a more diverse population, avoiding the common respondent bias problem, and comparing the effect of a market orientation to that of an entrepreneurial orientation, the findings from this balanced......

Marketing Orientation

...is meant by a Marketing Orientation and whether this is a successful model in todays’ marketing industry. Marketing is the actions undertaken by a business to sell products or provide services to consumers. Marketing encompasses every way in which consumers perceive business and includes all methods used to generate sales. As suggested by Peter Vessenes (2003:30), ‘’Cash may be king, but marketing is everything’’. Marketing can be defined in many ways however one of the most predominant definitions used today is: ‘’ Marketing is a social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others’’ ( Kotler et al.,1999; Addock et al 2001) Marketing is in summary, all the activities used in negotiating the passing of goods and services between the producers and consumers. The concept of marketing has evolved over time. Businesses orientate their marketing strategies around different components. Whilst in today’s business world the marketing orientation is most the most favourable method of marketing this has not always been the case and is still not the only orientation used. Generally speaking the marketing orientation is viewed as having evolved from three prior developmental orientations therefore it is worth considering each type of orientation which has been prominent previously. To begin there was the Production orientation. The focus of this orientation is to mass produce......

Retrospective Analysis of Personality

...Retrospective Analysis of Personality Intro to Psychology August 31, 2014 I found doing this paper quite exciting to a certain point, until I really took a moment to glance back into my life and see the changes that have taken place. Through the years I have wondered what made me change my personality towards the way I look at things but now I see why. I drastically made those changes due to the different people and environments I have been. My personality started out as helping anyone I could, even if it left me broke. I still had that great feeling of helping someone out. My sense of humor and acting silly is something I can’t change because I myself enjoy it so much and need it; in this day and age. I have change me eagerness to help people if it means coming straight out of my pocket. I have been used, cheated, and lied to for reason I wouldn’t know why. But this is what has become of our world, and cause me to be more protective of my feelings as well as my outlook. It’s quite sad to add that majority of my friends I can’t like I use to but just as the saying goes. Keep your friends close but enemies closer. Fast-growing understanding of the human genome has made it clear that both sides of the debate have merit. Nature endows us with inborn abilities and traits; nurture takes these genetic tendencies and molds them as we learn and mature. That’s it, right? Ha! The "nature vs nurture" debate still rages on, as scientist fight over how much of who we are is shaped......

Retrospective Analysis of Personality-V2

...Retrospective Analysis of Personality Retrospective Analysis of Personality Reflection of My Life History Growing up in Gary, Indiana, I moved to Houston, TX when I was 10 years old when my parents got a divorce. Being in a new city away from all of my childhood friends, I was very shy and reserved. My mom made me go to Sunday school at church each weekend and I believe this was to allow me to meet new friends. I never liked Sunday school or going to church as a kid or even playing any sports. Then around my freshman year of high school I decided to try out for football, mainly because my best friend talked me into it. I was one to follow the crowd by the time I became a teenager and that got me into a lot of trouble. For example, sneaking out of my bedroom window with my mother’s car keys to go for a joyride with my buddies at the age of 14. There was no father figure in my home, so I would either go to my best friend or my coaches to fill that void. I was the exact opposite of a leader. Finally by the time I reached my senior year, my personality started to take a turn for the better. As a senior football player with 3 years of experience, I became a leader on the team. After high school, I joined the Army National Guard and that was another culture shock for me. Going through this experience taught me further leadership skills and proved to myself that I could accomplish anything that I put my mind to. Later in life I met my wife and she was a woman that......

Retrospective Analysis of Personality

...aspects of my personality have stayed consistent, what little remained of my youth must be the small bits of sunny personality I have towards someone long after I get to know them. Though my personality remains unapproachable and hard, those that do take the time to talk to me find warmth and kindness often making them feel the need to share even the most secret aspects of their lives, which somehow made me a good friend that they can rely on. It seems now that I look over the years of my life that I developed several personalities, one that pushes away those I do not dare be near, one that remains professional and respectful to authoritative figures, and one that is overly agreeable often leading me to be used or worse. Based on my retrospective analysis, the role of nature that shaped my personality stemmed from both my parents. My father was independent, manipulative, cruel, and narcissistic which led me to have a fierce attitude when pushed hard enough, manipulate the opposite sex to get things I wanted (please note that much of this had to do with being molested for years and soon ended when I had finally found my soul mate), and be unapproachable though independent. My mother is very sarcastic, humorous, and strong with slight bouts of depression, agreeableness, and dependency. This I believe led to my depressive state, sarcastic nature, humor, and when paired with a mate dependent nature. The nurture that shaped my personality definitely came from the vast......

Narration Essay

...Narration Essay It was a beautiful day outside when we had left Rhode Island after our week of being on vacation. I got in my sister’s car and sat in the passenger seat, like I always do. We weren't nearly close to being home when I realized how important my life was. I saw my life flash before my eyes in a split second, while hearing the screeching of the tires. There were vivid memories that stuck in my mind; home, happiness, and friends. The thought of how I took everything for granted. Suddenly the car jerked and a loud crushing of metal occurred. My chest was burning from the seatbelt, and somehow my forehead felt like it had been punched. This car accident made me realize how important life is and not to take home, happiness, and friends for granted. While listening to the tires yelling; my mind’s first thought was of home, of my family. Snow was falling on my nose and all six of us were in a huge Christmas tree farm. It is a competition each year to see which one of us finds the fattest and biggest Christmas tree to put in the living room. This was the memory that crossed my mind of my family. The memory of how I didn't tell them that I loved them that day, or even the day of the car accident. I had taken my family for granted; I didn't tell them just how much I loved them before the car accident.  I thought about how my family would feel if my sister and I didn’t live through the accident.  Thinking about my family made me realize just how important my life......

Retrospective Analysis of Personality

...Retrospective Analysis of Personality Written By: Keisha G. Roberts Tulane University Dr. Bernard Curry PSY 105: Introduction to Psychology December 2, 2015 Abstract “Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. The study of personality focuses on two broad areas: One is understanding individual differences in particular personality characteristics, such as sociability or irritability. The other is understanding how the various parts of a person come together as a whole.” (Encyclopedia of Psychology) In this essay, I will explore the traits in my personality that have changed and the traits that have remained unchanged over the years. I will also explore how nature and nurture have shaped my personality, the inaccuracies and biases that I find and compare my findings to systematic studies that are considered more valuable than individual accounts. Retrospective Analysis of Personality As far back as I can remember, three personality traits stick out to me, being very observant, sarcastic and introverted. I was always very observant, quiet and shy. I didn’t have many friends as a kid due to me being so quiet. Now that I think about it, I never really wanted a lot of friends when I was younger. I was very mature for my age meaning, when other kids would be outside doing what most kids in those days did, I would be in my room curled up with a book or drawing. I watched how my peers would act, and most of...
