Week 3 Paper
The human organism is amazing and its complexity goes beyond the tangible body itself. The cognitive functions are so fascinating to consider; the ability to emote, reason, and make decisions have drawn many into the search for a better understanding of the mind. The mind-body dualism theory is a theory that argues that the mind, also referred to as the soul, and the body are distinct from each other. This is highly regarded in many religions, such as Hinduism, that believes in reincarnation. Reincarnation requires the mind to be independent of the body and free to flow from one body to another in life after life. As psychology continues to develop as a science and with the advancements in scientific technology it brings to question how our psyche functions within this organism. Consider motivation. Does the body, specifically the brain, operate our motivation? I want to look into the motivation to exercise. What are the functions taking place that will drive a person to make the decision to exercise? Is this a function of the mind, the body, or a combination of both?
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a great model to illustrate the interactive nature of our mind and body. It is also a good flow chart to point out some differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. In psychology, the terms intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are common. Intrinsic motivation is essentially the personal satisfaction of an achievement without an external factor as reason for pursuing said achievement; Pride, self-esteem, confidence, etc. Extrinsic motivation refers to the reasons outside of one’s self that drives one to do something; tangible incentives and rewards. The pyramid tells us that the basic needs of a person stem from survival. Food, water, shelter, and safety are certainly external incentives that would…...

This is unconscious most of the time but you can consciously direct your attention to a task as well. For instance, the material speaks of a study that directed people to allocate 90% of their attention to one task over another, then reserves their attention, and finally they were told to split their attention 50/50 (Willingham, 2007). The results showed that they were able to direct their attention to either the inside target or outside target as they were directed to do (Willingham, 2007). Even in everyday life we can direct our attention as needed. 3. What is the relationship between attention and cognition? Cognitive processes do require attention. These processes include but are not limited to decision-making, emotion, or memory. I think the relationship here is that they go hand in hand. Attention is needed whenever cognitive processes are used. We need attention when we are attempting to make a decision. You have to be able to focus on weighing the options and making the best choice in decision making. I also use attention when dealing with emotions. There are times when it is important to reframe from showing certain emotions. For instance, if you are in a meeting at work and something offends you it is best to maintain a professional attitude and this can require......

Development of Visual Motion Perception for Prospective Control: Brain and behavioral studies in infants. Frontiers in Psychology. doi:10.3389/fpsyg.2016.00100 This article explains the development of visual perception in relation to motion perception and coordinated movement in infants. It also compares the different stages of visual perception, motion perception, and reaction time across different ages. Infants as young as three weeks old show to perceive some optical collisions as can be witnessed by the blinking of their eyes. However, at two months of age, they can steadily track moving objects with their heads and eyes as they show prospective control. At three to five months, they can differentiate virtual flow displays of at least 22 degree changes in heading direction. At about six months they follow objects using predictive head and eye movement. They also predicatively navigate and aim for any moving objects of interest or desire, especially with their hands.  Franchak, J. M., Celano, E. C., & Adolph, K. E. (2012). ...Empathy Exercise Gina Krazer PSY/220 December 13, 2011 Mary Jeanell Buck Snap judgments have a negative effect of hindering one’s ability to foster empathy. Often, such judgments can prove to be incorrect about a person, if the time is taken out to get to know him/her. According to Bolt (2004, p. 51), “People are not always what they seem at first glance. This is not to say that negative judgments are always erroneous or that people never contribute to their own failure, merely that life situations are unique and shape people’s actions more than we know.” Almost every individual is guilty of making these snap judgments, including myself. However, I can only think of one person that I presently have negative feelings toward. I am not in the position to say that I know this person well either. She is a coworker of mine and one certain situation influenced my judgments about her. If I found that I was wrong, I would change my opinion and work to change the basic relationship that she and I hold. The circumstances that created this snap judgment occurred during the time I was training her to be a server. On the second day of her training, I had about three tables in a row not leave any tips. Since this does not normally happen, I had suspected that she may have taken the tips, because she was cleaning all of my tables. I had my general manager check the cameras and, as I suspected, she had taken the tips. I confronted her about it and she immediately......

The dependence and the reliance are not the only two things that technology brings. The more reliance of these things causes cyber attacks which are gradually increasing the occurrence. It is harder to stop these attacks before they occur is more difficult than what can be expected but however it is not impossible. There is a trick to catching these attacks which is within programs and applications that the users uses which detects as well as notifies the user that there is an attack. This could be something like an anti-virus and/or a malware program or even a firewall. The purpose within this paper is to discuss cyber attacks as well as the steps involved and how to prevent them which was discussed in the article by Tony M.
