Presidents Father’s Day Address
Outside Speech Critique

Jamie Brown
16 June 2013
The speech I choose was given on 15th of June 2013. It was given by President Barack Obama at the White House. Each week on Saturday mornings, the President addresses everyone via live feed or through radio. You can also go to The White House web page and click on Weekly address and you can watch each speech he has given since this term has started. This Week the President addressed this Father’s Day.
In the introduction the President said “Today we’re blessed to live in a world where technology allows us to connect instantly with just about anyone on the planet. But no matter how advanced we get, there will never be a substitute for the love and support and, most importantly, the presence of a parent in a child’s life. And in many ways, that’s uniquely true for fathers”. I was like wow, I was hooked right from the get go. I myself didn’t have a farther growing up. My father died when I was 7 years old and my mother never remarried. She raised three boys and one girl by herself without any help. My little brother has no knowledge or can remember any interaction with our father because he was only 1 years old when he died. As I have grown and realized that I wish we could have had a father figure in our lives, because some of the things a mother can’t teach a man. Plus, we need that male bonding time. I think President Obama’s speech tailored towards everyone, young, old, high school children doesn’t matter, because not all but some have grown-up without a father in their lives. The President gave information about his personal life, which most people in this position wouldn’t have done. He told that he didn’t really know his father growing up, which I could relate to from reading in my above, and how he wished he had a dad who was not only around, but involved.…...

...President Barack Hussein Obama President Barack Obama is one of the most exciting presidential election candidates in many years. It was just as much a strikingly symbolic moment in the evolution of the nation’s fraught racial history, a breakthrough that would have seemed unthinkable just two years ago. President Obama is a historical figure in American History because, he became the first successful African-American to become President, and he impacted society in a positive way. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961, to Barack Obama, Sr. and Ann Dunham. His parents were divorced when he was only two and the absence of his father greatly affected him. After high school, Obama studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1983 with a degree in political science. He then entered Harvard Law School in 1988. The next year, he met Michelle Robinson, an associate at Sidley & Austin law firm in Chicago. On October 3, 1992, he and Michelle were married. They moved to Kenwood, on Chicago's South Side, and welcomed two daughters: Malia born 1998 and Sasha born 2001. In February 2007, Obama made headlines when he announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. He was locked in a tight battle with former first lady and then, U.S. Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton. On June 3, 2008, however, Obama became the presumptive nominee for the Democratic......

...American Government Ulysses S. Grant Becoming the eighteenth President of the United States is an honor to me for many reasons. The history of my life, the trials and tribulations I have been put through has made me the man, and the intelligent, well-rounded President that I am today. You only have one life to live and this is the life I have conquered. On April 27, 1822 in a town known as Point Pleasant Ohio, I was born to my parents, Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson, as Hiram Ulysses S. Grant. Following behind would be my siblings, Samuel Simpson Grant, Clara Rachel Grant, and Virginia Paine Grant. As I became older, my family and I moved to Georgetown, Ohio where my father pursued his business as a tanner. We lived on a simple farm where I preformed my share of chores due to the fact that the tannery did not interest me much. I developed considerable skills with handling horses while living on the family farm. In 1839, my father held an appointment for the United States Military Academy located in West Point, New York and pressured me to attend. Even though I had no interest in the military, I figured I would attend since going back to school was not an importance at the time. In 1843 I graduated from USMA ranking twenty-first in my class of thirty-nine pupils and gained a reputation at the academy as a fearless and expert horseman with an astonishing knowledge of mathematics. Upon graduating, I was assigned as a brevet second lieutenant to the fourth U.S......

If I Were a President for One Day

...Theme: If I were a president for one day If I were a president for one day I would be very honored. Only the idea of me being a president gets me excited and happy. PRESIDENT – this word means a lot, it’s a huge responsibility and it doesn’t just mean to stand on the stage, give a speech and then go back to your big luxurious house and sit there all day. It means that you should imagine yourself in somebody else’s shoes, think about what your people are suffering and going through. Think about how you can make the education better, or make better conditions for those ho are in need. That’s what being a president is about. Trying to make your country better, making the people better. I would organize a donation event for charity, because what’s more important then helping those in need, knowing that you gave something that would make such a difference to them. I would outlaw anything that would cause mistreatment, discrimination or racism. If I were a president for one day, I would try to do as many things that I dreamt of. First of all I would meet some of my favorite singers, like: Beyonce, Etta James or Alicia Keys. Meeting them would be amazing. They all have amazing voices and sing such beautiful songs that really touch my heart. I would also love to be a guest star on “The Ellen Show”. I love her show; it’s funny, interesting and sometimes very inspirational. Flying on my personal jet would be “the cherry on top”, but these are just my dreams, and who......

A Father's Love

...A Father’s Love Most families would agree that having a home without a father is a crisis. Fathers play vital roles in the household. Fathers provide security that is almost impossible to replace. The dilemma starts with fathers who do not think that they are needed. My father has changed my life for the better because he taught me to refrain from judging others, inspires others through humor, and shows me Godly love. I see an absence of judgment in my father. Most parents forget that everything they do will most likely be mimicked by their children. I have a father who never treated anyone differently because of their social standing. My father is a social worker specializing in Cystic Fibrosis and Down syndrome patients. Because he always had his patients around him, I was able to see how he embraced their differences. One patient in particular went around the town begging other people to buy her artwork. She got plenty of giggles and cold stares. That was, until she got to my father. He held his hand out and said “I have been looking for you everywhere, Missy! I am in need of some beautiful art, and you are the woman to supply it for me!” He than proceeded to hand her all the change he had on him in exchange for her paintings. Because fathers are so looked up to, positively or negatively, they impact our actions and show us what is acceptable. Judgment is contagious but so is kindness. My father inspires everyone around him through his sense of humor. My father...

A Father's Role

...Abstract This paper explores the role of a father and some of the many changes that have occurred from Shakespeare’s time and our current societies’ view of a father’s role. There have been many studies conducted over the years focused on what an important role a father plays in the healthy upbringing of a child. A father in the past was looked at as a man who literally owned a daughter and was someone who should not be disobeyed. Overtime the father was looked at as a person who helped mold a child emotionally and intellectually. Recent studies show that a father is more likely to play with a child than a mother. Almost anyone who looks back on their childhood who had a father or father figure would likely say they can remember how playful their father was. This paper will also look into the plays written by Shakespeare and the father – daughter relationships within them.   A Father’s Role The need for a father has stayed the same, but the role of a father has changed since Shakespeare’s time to today’s society. There are many great quotes on the father-daughter relationships that some hold on to for inspiration. Some examples are, “There is no love like a father’s love for his daughter” and “A father’s job is not to teach his daughter to be a lady. It is to teach her how a lady should be treated.” Clearly these quotes did not come from Shakespeare’s time. In Shakespeare’s time a father looked at his daughter was looked at as a subject who was owned by their......

Presidents

...I think George W. Bush was the worst President we ever had. My reasons begin with the 2000 election where he lost the popular vote and through manipulation and party tinkering was appointed President when Al Gore decided he no longer wanted to be part of the drawn out farce that had become the 2000 election in which he actually won the popular vote. Mr. Bush and his administration missed or ignored signs and warnings leading up to 9/11/2001 one of the worst days in our nation’s history. Following the attack on 9/11 Mr. Bush and his administration were obsessed with going to war first to Afghanistan where we knew Bin Laden was hiding and eventually losing interest in capturing or killing Bin Laden and instead focusing on an elaborate plan to trick the American population through lies and deceit into a war with Iraq, A country who had not attacked us and who had nothing to do with 9 / 11. We were bombarded with sound bites about mushroom clouds, we were told to buy duct tape and plastic because another attack was imminent. The administration presented information to the United Nations based on intelligence that the administration knew to be flawed and in some cases utterly false, all in the effort to keep the country scared and on edge while they prepared for a war of “choice”. Mr. Bush and his administration assured the American people that the war would be quick and decisive, we would bring “Shock and Awe’ to bear. In truth while Mr. Bush was staging a photo op on board......
