EU solidarity
The broad concept of EU solidarity is said to be the underlying aspiration of the integration of the people of Europe and is guaranteed by the following freedoms: * Free movement of persons / workers * Free movement of goods * Free movement of services * Free movements of capital
Central to the European Union is the concept of unification of nations with the emphasis representing recognition of the autonomy of individual states.
Free Movement of Services & the Internal Market
Article 56 of the EC Treaty guarantees companies from any European Union Member State to be able to establish themselves in another European Union Member State and provide services on the territory of another European Union Member State or on that one which they are thus established in.
Companies established in one EU Member State are therefore able to provide services in any of the other EU Member States.
The internal market is the market within the European Union, a market not based simply on the individual Member States but across all Member States and is achieved through the free movement of services and the free movement of goods throughout the European Union.
Benefits of the Internal Market
Since the creation of the internal market and in the ten years following the first completion of the first Single Market programme in 1993 the following tangible benefits were recorded: * 2.5 million extra jobs created due to the removal of national barriers * Increase of wealth in the single market up to EUR 9 billion – EUR 6,000 per family * Increased competition – better prices and better products available for consumers
Barriers to trade between Member States
Central to the creation of the internal market is the removal of barriers affecting trade between European Union Member States. For example certain Member States imposing…...

Sg Cowen: New Recruits

...Case analysis : SG Cowen – New Recruits 1. What are the key decision points used by S.G. Cowen in making hiring decisions? What is your evaluation of the process used by the firm?  SG Cowen utilized a well‐developed, tiered process to make hiring decisions on potential candidates. SG Cowen first conducts informational sessions at on‐campus recruiting events to describe the firm, its benefits and steps in the recruiting/hiring process. They use these first‐round interviews, in advance of the formal recruiting process, to assess how serious candidates are about the opportunity. SG Cowen then reviews the resumes submitted by interested students and holds open, on‐campus interviews. The firm also selects some of those interested students specifically for closed interviews. The pool of initial candidates is narrowed down to a few candidates through a second round of on campus interviews. The first key decision point for SG Cowen is to select candidates who are best qualified to make it through the “Super Saturday” final selection process in New York City. Recruiters focus on identifying candidates that possess the skills to succeed in the company’s day‐to‐day operations and have the personality to fit the organization’s culture. During the Super Saturday event, the thirty candidates are each interviewed by five senior bankers. Following the interviews, the senior bankers gather to determine which candidates should be extended offers. At this final key decision point, the......

In today’s market the consumer has different demands than in the past. New vehicles have to offer the latest most up to date technology available, get great economic fuel mileage, and be constructed with high quality materials to meet the highest safety standards, be comfortable, and last for a long time. Dealerships struggle to meet all the needs of their customers, but want repeat customer business. Not only do they sell the vehicles, they offer services after the purchase as well. These services being general maintenance, like oil changes, rotating tires, over all checkups, and following the manufacturers recommend service requirements. A quote that comes from an article found on, originally published in WardsAuto, a trade publication whose target audience works in the auto industry, “Parts and service carried us through the recession,” says Craig Monaghan, CEO of Asbury Automotive Group, a chain with 79 dealerships. “The front end of the store is sexy, but we make our money in the back.” (Tuttle, 2012) The dealership has overhead they have to cover. Recruit It creates a ripple effect; more job openings occur as employees are moved about. It lowers the morale of those employees not selected for the position. It may result in stagnation since new outlooks and ways of doing things are not being brought into the firm. It creates negative internal competition for the position. There are some drawbacks to internal recruitment. Since there are limited opportunities for advancement, there is often negative competition among employees for openings. Then those who are not selected may feel demoralized. Not bringing in fresh ideas to the firms can result in stagnation; this is often referred to as inbreeding or the cloning of employees. Finally, as openings are filled internally, new openings are created, causing a ripple effect and more hiring. Disadvantage Inbreeding: One drawback of extensive internal recruiting is the reduced likelihood of innovation and new perspectives. ...networking applications, and video games. Its entry-level price is just $499. The challenge for Apple is to convince potential users that they need a new, expensive gadget with the functionality that the iPad provides. This is the same challenge faced by the iPhone when it was first announced. As it turned out, the iPhone was a smashing success that decimated the sales of traditional cell phones throughout the world. Will the iPad do likewise as a disruptive technology for the media and content industries? It looks like it is on its way. The iPad has some appeal to mobile business users, but most experts believe it will not supplant laptops or netbooks. It is in the publishing and media industries where its disruptive impact will first be felt. The iPad and similar devices (including the Kindle Reader) will force many existing media businesses to change their business models significantly. These companies may need to stop investing in their traditional delivery platforms (like newsprint) and increase their investments in the new digital platform. The iPad will spur people to watch TV on the go, rather than their television set at home, and to read their books, newspapers, and magazines online rather than in print. Publishers are increasingly interested in e-books as a way to revitalize stagnant sales and attract new readers. The success of Amazon’s Kindle has spurred growth in e-book sales to over $91 million wholesale in the first quarter of......

Sg Cowen: New Recruits

...S9-402-028 REV: JANUARY 19, 2006 THOMAS DELONG VINEETA VIJAYARAGHAVAN SG Cowen: New Recruits We are who we recruit. — SG Cowen professional Chip Rae, director of recruiting at SG Cowen, looked out the conference room window at the falling flakes and wondered how fast the snow was accumulating. Most of the firm’s bankers had come in from Connecticut or Westchester to participate in the Super Saturday recruiting event, and he knew they were anxious to get home before the weather deteriorated and made travel dangerous. The interviews had finished at noon, and the candidates from various graduate schools had left for their flights right away. Now, the bankers were eating lunch, discussing interview results and making decisions. They were sitting in “Giants Stadium,” the bank’s largest conference room, and Rae had set the tables up in a U-shape so that he could stand in the front and still communicate with all 30 bankers. He posted placards with all the candidate names on the bulletin board and moved them around as they came up for discussion. The hiring meeting had moved rapidly through a number of candidates. The decision makers had agreed on candidates who were firm “yeses” and some other clear “nos.” Now was the tricky part: there were four candidates still left. Each person had some strong support among their interviewers but had also raised some questions. To reach the ideal class size after factoring in expected yield, Rae wanted to give out only......

S.G.Cowen: New Recruits

...1. What is your evaluation of the hiring process used by S.G.Cowen? S.G.Cowen uses the same pattern as the majority of Wall Street companies by making hiring decisions during the early winter and spring of each year so that the new associates can begin in the summer. Besides a full hiring process, the company selects some associates that already worked or are still working to S.G.Cowen utilising, therefore, internal sources of recruitment. First year associates selected internally can be analysts that after three years of collaboration (without attending a business school) are promoted or summer interns that attend a business school and are offered a full-time contract at the end of the internship. The hiring process of S.G.Cowen in terms of new outside associates (that had never worked for the company before) underlies on presentations made by bankers in “core business schools” (for example NYU or Cornell) to inform the students about their work environment and conditions. The aim of these presentations is to make sure that four questions are answered: “who are we, what do we do, what distinguish us from competitors and what are the next steps”. This ensures that everyone receives a clear, complete and similar message from all bankers. The next step is to focus on informational interviews to help them understand how students felt about working in a company like S.G.Cowen. These interviews are highly efficient because they work like a previous self-selection process. Only......
