The traditionally large share of market for Coca-Cola and Pepsi establishes a large barrier of entry for others to enter the market. This results in an ability to charge higher retails, and thus preserve margin. In addition, both the Coca-Cola Company and Pepsi have franchisee agreements or own their bottlers. This controls access of the distribution network to other beverage companies. Due to the size of these two market leaders in the soda pop business, their established source and distribution channels are extremely fine-tuned. Historically, the companies were able to dictate prices to their bottlers based upon bottling agreements. They were also able to prevent their bottlers from carrying competing brands, which could have possibly driven down the profitability of the major brand. In addition, the two main entrants benefit from economies of scale in negotiating best rates for the majority of their needs. From the 2012 UK Soft Drink Report it shows that the soft drinks industry has grown massively in value by 5.1% in 2011 which equates to £14.5 billion. Along with this consumption of soft drinks has risen by 0.7% to reach 14.6 billion litres. While prior research focused on xed-prize tournaments, i.e., on tournaments where the prize or prize sum to be awarded is set in advance, we introduce a new type of tournament into the literature: premium incentives. While premium incentives, just like xed-prize tournaments, are based on relative performance, the prize to be awarded is not set in advance but is a function of the rm's success: the prize is high if the rm is successful and low if it is not successful.
