Being accountable and making tough decisions such as completing my bachelor’s degree will not be easy, but in the long term it will offer me better career opportunities and ultimately a better life. Personal responsibility is something I have grown to appreciate more as I have gotten older. I believe the decisions one makes impact your life both positively and negatively and for me, living too much in the here and now instead of realizing the investment in myself that a higher education brings kept me from making the more responsible decision. Adult education is not easy with the everyday demands of work, family, social life and day to day responsibilities. ”Currently, nearly half of all college students are ae 25 or older, with numbers expected to continue to increase” (J. Lorenzetti, 2003) However, if you consider the time spent watching television, reading for pleasure, etc., it becomes not only possible, but achievable. The increase of adults with degrees also has a positive impact on society.” Increasing adult attainment of the baccalaureate degree will produce the highest individual and social returns: however, this goal clashes with the structures in place to support it. Millions of adult students are seeking degrees in a system built largely for – and around – traditional students” (Pusser et al., 2007) this may also create some animosity between those students at the traditional college age (18-22) and adult learners. In my observations, the added experience of the adult learners only add to the team dynamic within the classroom groups. The hard part is to commit to and hold yourself accountable to the goal you set of completing your degree. More often than not, human beings can easily find the reasons not to do something that…...

...Personal Responsibility and College Success Brandy King Gen 200 November 15, 2012 Dr. Rosalind Williams Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal responsibility is being accountable for the decisions we make and how they affect the achievement of our goals. Success in college relies solely on the direct effect of personal responsibility, as it is the students’ job to fulfill the education requirements. Every individual has a personal responsibility to succeed, not just in school, but in life. Personal responsibility is required to succeed in life. Succession in college is up to one person, the student. Every student has a duty to succeed. There are plenty of people expecting a student to succeed, but responsibility is solely on the student. The parents who pushed, the teachers who encouraged, but only the student can decide whether they will fail or not. The student has to make the choice of studying, or partying, or working, or sleeping. These decisions can be difficult sometimes, but there will be nobody to blame but the student for failure. Where there is a will, there is a way. Every individual has a duty to themselves to succeed. I honestly do not believe there is a single person that has ever awakened and decided to be a bum. A person’s lifestyle is due mostly in part by the decisions they have made in the past. A person with personal responsibility and self- determination will be successful in whatever they choose to do. The......

...Personal Responsibility Collin Todd Gen200 02/04/2013 Dennis Golden Personal Responsibility When I was younger my mother would always tell me to be a responsible adult. I really did not understand her until I got older. One day my mother and I got into an argument and never really got along after that. So I moved out and moved in with my cousin. I was only 12 years old. I needed to learn how to be a responsible adult. I had no one to take care of me and I was on my own. So I had to learn how to grow up a lot quicker than other kids my age. When I got older I needed to figure out what I wanted to do after high school. So I joined the Marines. The Marines taught me different ways to be responsible. During my Marine Corps career I was taught different learning styles and how to be persistent to reach your goals. Without the corps I probably would have not done anything with my life. When I left the Marines I felt I needed to apply 3 key elements to be successful. These key elements are personal responsibility, learning style and persistency. What is Personal Responsibility? What is personal responsibility? To me personal responsibility is to be accountable for oneself and the people around you, in most any situation, there is no other person to hold accountable for your life than yourself. Everything we do is a direct reflection of your personality and the decisions you make. Kohlberg said, “Most theories of moral cognition...

...Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal Responsibility and College Success When a student makes the decision to commit to a college education, they must be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, organizational skills and time management, goal setting, and follow through. Frequently students fall short on these responsibilities and attempt to blame others for their failures. The student must realize that they alone are responsible for reaching their academic goals. The best way to predict how a student will perform in college is by using their high school grade point average (Haskins, 2009). The grade point average is a good indicator of the students’ level of commitment and personal responsibility toward their education. Students who have performed well in high school show that they have the potential ambition and personal responsibility to excel in the realm of higher education. Personal responsibility can be defined in many different ways to different people. In Ron Haskins article written in 2009, The Sequence of Personal Responsibility, he states that “When applied to education, personal responsibility means that students accept the responsibility to study hard and learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity” (paragraph 3). Another view is that personal responsibility requires self awareness of a person toward their personal success (Mwangi, 2012).......

...Personal Responsibility and College Success Erin A. Miller GEN/200 December 4, 2011 Aminah Brelvi Personal Responsibility and College Success It is my belief that the correlation between personal responsibility and college success encompass all areas of my life. Even though teachers are there to teach me, implementing my personal responsibility values will ensure my college success by using solid time management strategies, identifying my goals, and managing my stress. Definition of Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility, to me, means being aware of my commitments, knowing what my resources are to follow through with those commitments, understanding my deficits, exploring ways to better them, and being active with my goal planning. My management of time and stress will be the two biggest hurdles to overcome. When I am considering how best to manage my time, I look at four specific areas: structuring time for my schoolwork, using an effective calendar, scheduling family time, and managing my stress. Dave Ellis(2011), author of Becoming a Master Student, summed it up so well by saying, “Time is an equal opportunity resource. All of us, regardless of gender, race, creed, or national origin, have exactly the same amount of hours in a week. No matter how famous we are, no matter how rich or poor, we get 168 hours to spend each week-no more, no less.” Relationship between Personal Responsibility and College Success The first...

Taking personal responsibility, a student can lead a healthy lifestyle and considerably improve college grades. Personal responsibility is taking accountability for actions, accepting the consequences that come from those actions, and realizing how to improve. Many times there are outside forces that try to inhibit success while in college. The duties and responsibilities required from work, family, social responsibility, and health can all interfere with choices for success. The hours at work, whether full-time or part-time do not always stop when leaving work. Sometimes work is brought home, putting in extra hours to complete the project instead of using good time management skills and delegation to get it done. Families are a full-time job and contain extraordinary obligations. Family responsibility does not stop when leaving for work, running errands, or have a night out with friends. ...Fallon Cooper Gower GEN/200 April 30, 2012 University of Phoenix Personal Responsibility and College Personal responsibility varies for each individual, but for me it encompasses all areas of my life. It determines how I choose to live my life via my moral compass. Education and personal responsibility are two aspects that can sometimes be hard for people to take control of. It is much easier to point a finger when things do not go as planned, such as failing a test or turning an assignment in late. In order for students to be successful in college, they must practice personal responsibility by holding accountability for their actions, identifying educational goals, and using time management skills effectively. I have made mistakes in my college career, and I do not always blame who I should. Sometimes, I would much rather blame the teacher for failing a test or not agreeing with my grades when either turning my assignments late or not turning them in at all. The truth is that I should hold myself accountable for my actions. It was up to me to get the work done and to turn in the assignments. It is also my personal responsibility to study for the tests and to put in the correct amount of time each week in order to pass the course. I appreciate the teachers that do not give in the rules that they have made, and those who hold us students to our lack of responsibility. Learning includes making mistakes, but if we do not learn from our mistakes then that is solely our......
