Ports and Connectors There are three types of ports used in computers. They are as follows: Serial Ports, Parallel Ports, and Game Ports. Serial Ports are male and may contain 9 or 25 pins. The serial port transfers data 1 bit at a time. Parallel ports are female connectors with a total of 25 pins and can transfer data 8 bits at a time. Game ports are female connectors also and contain two rows of pins that equal 15 total pins. On modern computers the Game Ports have been replaced by USB connectors. A Network Interface Card (NIC) converts parallel communication serial. The NIC connects to the network by a RJ-45 connector. Another option of connecting to the internet is with the use of a modem. A modem connects to a phone line with standard speeds of 56 Kbps. A V-92 modem supports faster speeds to get your tasks done. The modem converts analog to digital. This is the slowest way to connect to the internet.

There are two types of monitors used for computers. They are the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) and the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). The CRT is very similar to that of a television. The LCD on the other hand is very much different. The LCD uses TFT (Thin Film Transistor) also referred to as active matrix. The backlighting of the LCD screen is illuminated by polarized panels. The screen size of a monitor is one of the first things noticed when purchasing a computer. Screen size is defined as the diagonal dimension of the screen. Another option that is important with a monitor is the contrast ratio. The Contrast Ratio defined is the ratio of purest white to purest black. When it comes to contrast ratio, bigger is better. The CRT has an option known as the Refresh Rate. This term relates to how many times per second the CRT beam writes to the screen, the higher the number the better. The LCD has is way of creating a new screen when finished with the old. This is called the response time. Where with the CRT the higher the number the better, with the LCD it is the complete opposite. The lower the number, the better it is for a LCD monitor. Video Buses use either AGP slots or PCI Express slots. PCI Express slots are twice as fast as AGP. Modern motherboards use either several PCI slots or a combination of AGP and PCI Express slots. If you are using a second video card, the second card will use a PCI slot. When it comes to buying video cards, make sure you buy a reputable brand. The may be more expensive, but you will get better performance and you will be more satisfied. Always check the bus type and the bus speed. Faster is better. The more RAM you have on your card is better, so make sure you check the video RAM on your card. There is always potential for something to go wrong. With that being said, you will need to know how to troubleshoot the situation. If you are having wavy images or your screen is flickering, it may be caused by EMI. EMI is short for Electromagnetic interference. This may be caused by audio speakers being too close to your monitor as well as fluorescent lights. Resolution for both the CRT and LCD monitors are defined as the addressable points on the screen. For the CRT monitor, the resolution settings are as follows:
-640x480
-800x600
-1024x768.
The higher the resolution equals a sharper picture. The resolution for a LCD monitor is a fixed resolution or Native Resolution. The resolution in a LCD monitor is referred to as a Pixel Pitch. For the LCD monitor, the resolution settings are as follows:
XGA- 1024x768
SXGA- 1280x1024
UXGA- 1600x1200
WUXGA- 1920x1200.
For the sharpest picture on an LCD monitor, always use native resolution.

Printers
There are three types of printers in use today for the printing off of work. The three are as follows: Dot Matrix, Ink Jet, and Laser. The Dot Matrix is an impact printer that uses a cluster of pins to strike a ribbon. The Ink Jet has two different types of printers. The first is the Thermal Bubble which uses heat to force ink through the nozzle. The next is the Piezoelectric Technology which uses and electrical charge to force ink through the nozzle. The third type of printer is the Laser printer which uses Electro-photographic means to print on the paper. There are many different printer interfaces. Printers may be connected by a variety of different sources. The following are the ways to connect your printer.

...Pentium Flaw The Pentium Microprocessor is the widest selling personal computers on the market. Intel created the 486DX and the Pentium chip that included Floating point unit (FPU). This FPU was known as a math co-processor. The problem arose in the fall of 1994, all the new Pentium chips were manufactured with an error in the FPU system. This error was in the FPU instructions for the division. This caused the chip to divide certain numbers incorrectly. Intel engineers discovered a flaw in the floating-point math subsection of the Pentium processor. But instead of assessing this problem they simply ignored it and thought that the customers would not ever notice the flaw. Its greatest mistake was the so-called “Pentium flaw,” in which an obscure segment among the Pentium CPU’s 3.1 million transistors performed division incorrectly. Intel quoted an error rate of about 1 in 8.77*10^9 random divisions. The exact frequency depends on the type and precision of the operands; single-precision reciprocals, for example, are always returned correctly. (Nicely, 2011) This was first reported by Professor Thomas Nicely in October of 1994 by computing the sum of the reciprocals of a large collection of prime numbers on his Pentium-based computer. The Flaw was in the 486DX processor chip, with the Floating point unit. The error in the unit would occur very rarely, when dividing non-integers. Intel’s testers knew of this issue before it was released, but they decided not to tell anyone outside of the company, this was their first and largest mistake. These Pentium processors included something new called a floating-point unit, which is also know as a math coprocessor.
