Group Properties

Roles
It is a set of expected behavior patterns needed to fulfill a given position.
In a group, each member has their own roles and tasks in order for the teamwork to be effective and efficient.
For example, in a group of 5 students doing school project, one of them should be the leader of the group, whose role is to spread the tasks to each of the members while keeping the group on track. The other two students are to do research and information, while the rest are to summarize and type it on the computer.
That way, each role can maximize their jobs and they can finish the project efficiently.

Norms
They are standard behaviors that are acceptable within the group members. This includes attitudes, feeling, opinions and actions. They determine the relationships among group members and/or with non-members.

Status
It is a position or rank given to a particular group based on social acceptance.
It is determined by power, abilities and personal characteristics of each group members.

Size
It determines the amount of group members.
Smaller groups tend to complete their works faster than large groups because they are more efficient. However, larger groups are better at problem solving as they pool in more ideas and experience.

Cohesiveness
It is a measure of attraction between the group members that motivates them to stay with each other.
A group tends to produce more when there is a high level of cohesiveness. This is because each member is feeling comfortable with each other, thus creating a good working environment.
There are few things that can build group cohesiveness: • Make smaller groups • Stimulate competition with other groups • Physically isolate the group • Spend time together…...

...INTRODUCATION Organization does not exist in isolation. They ar part of the society (or even, societies) within which they operate and, as such, exit within a complex web of relationship which from their environment. And that is always changing indeed, the pace of change appears to be spending up and the modern world is characterized as much by its turbulence as by any nation of stability. This turbulent environment presents both threats and opportunities to business. The threats are that the organizations current ways of operating and or the goods and services they produce will no longer be viable under new conditions in the future. The opportunities come from the possibilities of new ways of operating and the production of new goods and services which will be successful in the change conditions. So, business organization constantly has to come to terms with the changing nature of the forces acting upon them within their environment. They need to understand how to national and international economic and political situation affects them, what influence social attitudes and structures have on them, how theology affects their activates and operations, what the legal formwork within which they operate requires of them, and how they work in context of the broad ecological concerns of the modern world. ...OB/Peds March 11, 2014 Community Resources Paper     The Risks and Education of Teenage Pregnancy                 The at-risk group that I chose to research is teenage pregnancy, and the education and risks associated with it. I selected this topic because I feel like it is essential to teach our children all the risk and responsibilities that come with the decision to become sexually active, before they become sexually active. If teens are taught the essentials about pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and are educated on the resources available, they will be able to make an informed decision before making a crucial decision. I feel that when abstinence is all that is taught by parents, our children are too scared to ask about sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy, and don’t know about the resources available to them to prevent both. Teenagers who are sexually active have no idea all of the different resources available to help them to prevent pregnancy and spreading sexually transmitted infections. When they become sexually active they are afraid that they are going to get in trouble for not being abstinent which further increases their chance of getting pregnant or spreading infections because they are too scared to ask about it before they put themselves in the situation. Among the most conservative states I found the following.                 “Mississippi continues to have the highest teeth birth rate, with 55 births per 1,000 girls. New......

Ob on the Edge

...250 OB ON THE EDGE The Toxic Workplace It’s not unusual to find the following employee behaviours in today’s workplace: Answering the phone with a “yeah,” neglecting to say thank you or please, using voice mail to screen calls, leaving a half cup of coffee behind to avoid having to brew the next pot, standing uninvited but impatiently over the desk of someone engaged in a telephone conversation, dropping trash on the floor and leaving it for the maintenance crew to clean up, and talking loudly on the phone about personal matters.1 Some employers or managers fit the following descriptions: In the months since [the new owner of the pharmacy] has been in charge [he] has made it clear that he is at liberty to fire employees at will . . . change their positions, decrease their bonus percentages, and refuse time-off and vacation choices. Furthermore, he has established an authoritarian work structure characterized by distrust, cut-backs on many items deemed essential to work comfort, disrespect, rigidity and poor-tono-communication.2 He walked all over people. He made fun of them; he intimidated them. He criticized work for no reason, and he changed his plans daily.3 251 What’s Happening in Our Workplaces? Workplaces today are receiving highly critical reviews, being called everything from “uncivil” to “toxic.” Lynne Anderson and Christine Pearson, two management professors from St. Joseph’s University and the University of North Carolina, respectively, note that......

...is a group and team process. The organization has to clear the call queue before the night shift employees leave. Our goal as a team is to assist each caller within 2-3 minutes and end the night on a good note. The organization process requires the whole organization to work together and to have good call times. The company is required to have a certain amount of calls a month and a certain goal to meet. It is not strict but we do work together as a whole to accomplish our goals and results. Organization behavior is necessary for managers because they need to use every function possible to make the organization flow without any problems. They need to understand organizational behavior because it is a very large part of their job. When being a manager, OB (organizational behavior) will benefit me in so many ways. It will allow me to evaluate the way people work and how to show them how to work much better and effectively. This will also show me how to motivate people and others to work better when together in a team. Understanding organizational behavior will also allow me to become more experienced in the field of analyzing individuals which will assist me better when interviewing, training and or controlling the organization. Conclusion Therefore, organization behavior is important for individuals in organizations, groups and teams and of course the organization itself. Understanding what organizational behavior means can assist managers, supervisors and any......

Ob and Management

...Hence, it is important for the management to value Organization Behavior (OB) highly and continue to practice scientifically established methods. Organization behavior principles help the management to effectively manage the human behavior to be successful in the paradigm-shifting business environment of 21st century. There is growing research evidence that employees’ psychological capital is positively related to their performance and desired attitudes. Investing in this human capital results in desired performance outcomes such as increased productivity and customer satisfaction (Luthans, pp. 6). The current work-force is increasingly mobile, spread over globally, culturally diverse and a heterogenous mix of computer literacy. It is evident that such a work-force has created great challenges to the management in performance management, sustaining the intellectual capital and minimizing associated expenses. Monetary incentives alone are not effective in the current environment. Businesses can no longer offer or sustain job security to employees. Hence, in order to keep the employee morale high, it order to sustain reasonably good performance from its human social capital, the management needs to invest in organization behavior and its principles. Understanding, predicting, and management of human behavior helps the organization find the right fit talent and continue to nurture it for the mutual benefit. OB draws from many theoretical frameworks of the behavioral......

...Organizational Behaviour Individual case, assignment 1: Defining a Challenge What is the challenge or problem you are facing or want to study that is related to OB, management or leadership? I’m founder of a little firm based in Italy, after 6 years, started from scratch, I have 4 employees and they work from Vicenza, my city, where the firm is based. We did 500K in sales in 2015. The problem I’m facing is that I’m far from the firm and my employees know it, I need to motivate and empower them in order to leverage the quality and the efficiency of the workflow. I need to be able to rely on them because I can’t be present every day and they are the biggest part of the firm, I’m 1 person and they are 4 (they could be more within the end of the year) Why is this important to organizations? It’s important because every organization, for definition, it’s composed by more than one person, and there isn’t enough time to do all of the task on your own. That’s means that you are forced to delegate to others. The problem is that without the right commitment and power of the people of your firm, it’s almost impossible to succeed in the competitive arena. Identify the other stakeholders involved in this challenging situation. In order to do so I need to interact with my employees and most in general with all of the company’s stakeholders, I have to motivate work force but at the same give us the best environment they could find in a firm. ...
