#1 I Am
I am she
I wonder where I am
I hear screams
I see bliss of light after the darkness
I want what I can get
I am Olivia

I pretend to be happy
I feel no shame in my wrong doing
I touch the skin of the beast
I worry who stares back
I cry rarely
I am Olivia

I understand what I can’t see
I say what I don’t mean
I dream without sleeping
I try not to do much
I am Olivia

#2 Free Verse: What Would You Say
Bruised skin like the rot of an apple.
Scorn trust, whipped like a horse. Happiness
Still visible yet faded. The loss of a child that never made it
Eating the food of passion, yet the hunger of the stray dog never leaves.
Like a sun shining bright, pain still strike at night.
Good morning in the night. What would you say to
This, him, her , me ?

#3 Photogenic and Colorful: That outfit
The one thing I wear till it wears me
The dress is just darling, sparkles of pink
Oh and the heels! It’s a must that they bite back
My bittersweet experience yet an answer to all questions
The others bummed and stunned. That outfit, that joyful beautiful outfit

#4 Comical and humorous; Sweaty Roses
That rose sweats with a flowery stench
Ah-choo! Every time it sneezed, it
Made me itch. Sweaty rose though full of sunshine.
This rose had a million smiles
Still a stink rose

#5 Ode to ECHS; ECHS

Independence and Toddler

...power over their surroundings. Using the first scene with “Olivia” under Provide Control from my text, I will try my best to explain how I, as an educator, can and will facilitate the empowerment that Olivia desires. Developmentally appropriate environment for Olivia would be to provide her environment with some freedom for exploration with some, but not a lot of prohibitions. It would be smart to think of the difference when a toddler enters a room made special for them (child proof, games, etc.), verses, hanging out with grandma a dining room, trying to restrain her hands off all the fragile and precious knick knack glass placed all around on a wooden display. Don’t get me wrong, as we all need to know, a toddler definitely needs to learn that there are some things they can’t touch, but if parents understand the toddlers’ need to explore and manipulate objects, they can minimize the lessons to a fewer times when it’s important and spend the rest of the time teaching them that there are many things in the world that they can touch. If a toddlers spend their time in an environment that is appropriate for their age, which allows the child to know that they are a lot freer to investigate and explore. They will not be faced or forced to hear so many no’s. Sometimes the fewer children hear the word, “no”, the less likely it will be that the child will use the word, “no”, vice versa with the word, “yes”. Olivia is at a common age or stage where she is developing,......

License to Persevere

...named Olivia, would become a victim of this ravaging, unforgiving hell storm. Olivia was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She had only been living in Michigan two years and never encountered a winter with these conditions. Olivia knew her winter driving skills were a mere beginner to semi novice. Seeing no other way, she began her drive home from work. This poor choice in judgment would deem to be near fatal for her and the child she bared inside her. Olivia’s confidence grew as she drove. She embarked on interstate I-75 thinking this would be a clearer and faster route. As she proceeded, due to her anxiousness and inclement weather ignorance, she increased speed. Unknowingly, she encountered a patch of black ice and the car began to spin. Frantically and out of panic, she hit the brakes. The car commenced to slide into traffic and she was rear ended by another car. The impact pushed her over a guard rail and into the mouth of a deep ravine. Unfortunately, Olivia did not have her seat belt on. The devastation would leave her fighting for her life. With highway patrol, emergency medical service and fire rescue personnel bombarded by the rash of home fires and roadway accidents, Olivia’s fate appeared shallow, if not doomed. Witnesses of the catastrophic event stopped to aide but the ravine was too deep and the conditions didn’t permit. Unconscious and in imminent danger of frostbite starting to make its unwelcomed presence, three and a half hours later , Olivia is......

Conscience or Competitive Edge

...Introduction This case is an example of cultural differences and ethics in business. Olivia Jones, a buyer for a British clothing retailer, went on a buying trip to India for woven materials for the next season’s clothing line. Throughout her four day trip she was treated very well and shown many of the niceties of the Indian culture. It was on her last day that the tone of the trip changed for Olivia. Even though she knew it would her request would not be immediately considered by her hosts Olivia requested to see a factory where the clothing is manufactured. The factory was in the poorer part of the city that Olivia had not previously visited. The factory exhibited very poor working conditions and unethical employee treatment. Problems or Issues The splendor and opulence that Olivia experienced during her trip to India was forgotten once she saw the conditions in which the workers were kept. The workers are living and working in shocking, inhuman conditions. They were forced to work 12 hour shifts in 24 hour rotations for six months straight in a small workroom that was not even tall enough to stand up in. The workers who were not working slept on reed mats on the floor of the factory awaiting their next shift. The visit to the factory was unsettling to Olivia. The sights and experience of the day caused her internal conflict where she felt that her business dealings may have indirectly caused the terrible conditions at the factory. Olivia’s strong......

How Is Language Used to Show the Relationship Between Olivia and Viola in 1:5?

...How is language used to show the relationship between Olivia and Viola in 1:5? In Act 1 scene 5 we witness the first meeting of Viola, dressed as a man and calling herself Cesario, and Olivia. During this scene Olivia uses language to hint at the fact that she loves Cesario but at the same time Viola is using language to hint at the fact she is indeed a woman. We see hints of Olivia falling for Cesario as she sends away Maria, "Give us the place alone.", which makes the audience question why she wants no one else present. She then, clearly impressed by Cesario, tries to impress him too; She uses her beauty. She unveils, "we will draw the curtain" to "show (him) the picture". Just like with Feste, we see that Olivia likes Cesario's cheekiness and boldness. We know this because she let's Cesario get away with being rude, only commenting, "Yet you began rudely." Another interpretation of this is that at the beginning of the meeting Olivia isn't impressed by Viola/Cesario's boldness, but by the end has warmed up to 'him' and stops treating 'him' as a servant, or another one of Orsino's messengers whom she finds annoying. "From the count Orsino, is it?" "We'll once more hear Orsino's embassy." In this interpretation she goes from using a more reserved tone, answering little to Viola's long texts, "Tell me your mind." to using a more interested tone, "What is your parentage?" The shift in her feelings are due to how Viola presents herself and uses her language to give......

When ‘Cesario’ Goes to Woo Olivia, the Speech

...‘Cesario’ goes to woo Olivia, the speech that ‘he’ makes highlights the ridiculousness of this kind of adoration. He begins with “"Most radiant, exquisite and unmatchable beauty"”, but is forced to a stop because he doesn’t even know if he is addressing the right person, because he “"never saw her"”. The irony emphasises the satire of the way in which men woo women his sincerity is reflected in a different relationship in Twelfth Night, that of Orsino and Viola. Although Orsino has not known that his ‘man’ Cesario is really a woman, the relationship they have is much more sincere and based on truth and friendship, which means that when he realises the truth of the situation he asks her to marry him. Both the love depicted in Sonnet 130 and the relationship of Orsino and Viola would surely have the approval of the narrator of Christina Walsh’s A Woman to Her Lover, who wants “"co-equal love"” based on truth, rather than any kind of idealisation that makes the woman into an “"angel"” or a “"doll"”. His real love and real interest is his own poetry, and the name he is making for himself. This (much more modern) poem rather reflects Orsino’s own character in Twelfth Night: he is more interested in listening to music and Feste’s sad songs than going to make Olivia marry him. Viola partly wins Olivia’s heart by saying what she would do if she were Orsino, the first thing being to come and make camp outside Olivia’s house. This speech draws the reaction from Olivia: “"you......

The Comedy in Twelfth Night Is Largely Generated by Shakespeare's Use of Disguise and Mistaken Identity. How Far Do You Agree?

...play revolves around Viola and Cesario and the many events within the play that directly stem from these characters. In Act 1 Scene 4 we get our first glimpse of disguise within the play when we are introduced to Cesario. Here we learn that within a short space of time Viola has managed to become a favourite of Orsino and as Valentine notes “if the Duke continue these favours towards you, Cesario, you are likely to be much advanced”. This in itself is comedic if you relate it back to the fact that we were told Orsino would even bear the presence of another woman due to his love for Olivia yet with a simple disguise Viola has managed to not only gain entrance into his household and service but also managed to become one of Orsino's favourites which within itself is comic. Another key plot line that stems from Viola's use of disguise is the love triangle that starts to develop between her, Orsino and Olivia. All three characters make many remarks to this effect such as, Act 1 Scene 4 where Viola says “Whoe'er I woo, Myself would be his wife”. With this remark Viola is admitting that she has developed a love for Orsino and would marry him if she could and marks the beginning of the Triangle as a major plot line within the play. All of this adds to the humour as not only is it a ludicrous triangle but it is one where the solution would, on the face of it, be rather obvious however due to the disguise factor that is well ingrained into the story this is not the case. This humour......

Viola's Monologue

...with the Duke Orsino. He has been in love with Olivia for a long time, and he asks Viola to be his messenger. Viola goes to meet Olivia and tells her everything Orsino told her too. Orsino also sent a ring with Viola to give to Olivia, which she did. As she leaves, Olivia realizes that she has fallen in love with her, even though she has no idea she is a woman dressed as a man. She sends Malvolio after her to give her the ring back. She then goes into a long monologue about the ring and how confused she was that she had gotten it back. A monologue is any composition in which a single person speaks alone (dictionary.com) In her monologue, it is clear that Olivia is falling in love with Viola, and that they are caught in the middle of one huge love triangle. Throughout Viola’s monologue, she depicts many different literary elements, including allusion, metaphor, personification, symbolism, and theme. When Malvolio brings back the ring that Viola had given Olivia, she becomes very confused. In her monologue, she is basically saying that she didn’t leave a ring with her, why is she giving this to her? She is hoping that Olivia hasn’t started to like her. She was looking at Viola so much that she couldn’t even finish her sentences and she seemed distracted. She thinks that Olivia loves her. She sent a very mean messenger back to Viola instead of coming herself. Viola doesn’t want Orsino’s ring. Orsino never even sent her a ring. Olivia wants Viola. If that’s true, which it is,......

Empowering Olivia

...Empowering Olivia Sabrina L. Johnson ECE313: Collaboration with Parent & Community Professor: Ann Zucker July 2, 2012 Empowering Olivia As an educational professional, one the most important parts of my job is to appreciate all of the different stages that toddlers go through as they are developing (Gonzalez-Mena, 2009). In this paper, I will introduce you to Olivia, a toddler who is on a constant quest for independence, as well as explain how, as an educator, I can facilitate the empowerment that Olivia desires. I will also describe six key points illustrating my understanding of the importance of validating Olivia’s desire to gain power and control, as well as find a community resource for parents with toddlers like Olivia. Creating a developing appropriate environment is essential to helping empower Olivia. It should be designed to allow her the freedom to explore and try different things. One of the key areas of concern in developing an appropriate environment is safety; at this stage toddlers touch, explores, and use their bodies to learn about the world; therefore; a developmentally appropriate environment should be designed to allow them to climb, push, poke, prod, and perform a variety of other independent movements (Gonzalez-Mena, 2009). Toddlers are developing a sense of themselves as separate from their parents. They tend to insist on doing things for themselves. As an educator, I can help Olivia become independent......
