Most wanted
14 years old, inundated by sex and with a little sister who has turned into a thief. Your parents are engrossed by other matters, so when finding out about your little sister it starts a long row that continue into the small hours while you’re trying to sleep. The atmosphere at home gets more and more intense and as a crisis with your best friend results in none of you talking to each other, you are suddenly faced with the problem at home all by yourself. This is what the narrator in the British short story “Most Wanted” (2000) by Amanda Coe experiences in her childhood growing up with her little sister and her father and mother. She is almost a grown up, but doesn’t want to be.
The short story takes its beginning with a small introduction of the main character and her family’s problems which let us know, that it is in the past. It takes place in Mrs. Church’s house and in the main characters house, which, judging by the fact that the father has to pick up Michelle in car from Mrs. Church’s house must not be close to each other. The exact location however remains unknown. It is indicated that the family is of a middle class. They live in a two floor house, both the children go to school and Michelle has lent some books from the Millbank Junior library. Furthermore does the invitation for tea indicate a higher upper class: “Mom suggested that Alison Church should be invited for tea” (ll.31-32).
The 14-year-old narrator’s personality develops throughout the story. Her age indicates that she is about to become a teenager, which is supported by the development with her friend Gary: “Gary and I were undergoing a crisis. Our arrangement, for months so rewarding had been breached by him attempting to kiss me” (ll.83-84). At the beginning of the story she likes her mother more than she likes her father because she can transform any possible crime into…...

Welcome to Google…” Wow is the only word that comes to mind when thinking of the company culture at Google. Many people would agree working at this company is like walking into a dream every morning. Some more of the amenities offered at various Google office locations are a pub-style lounge in Dublin, Ireland, a pool table in the conference room of Tokyo, Japan, a rock climbing wall adorns the “tech talk” area in Boulder, Colorado. According to Draft (2010) adaptability culture is defined as “culture characterized by strategic leaders encouraging values that support the organization’s ability to interpret and translate signals from the environment into new behavior responses”. Google is a company whose values promote individual initiative, experimentation, risk taking, and entrepreneurship. (Draft, 2010) Value’s play an important role in developing any companies culture. Wanted: Volunteers

...HAVE IN EXCESS, but can you give what you need and what you want?” This is the question one has to answer before one does volunteer work. At first I thought that it was easy to answer with a yes, but when super-typhoon “Reming” struck the Bicol Region and left us in darkness, literally and figuratively, I had second thoughts. However, when I thought of my responsibility, I joined the relief and rehabilitation operations of our University called “Anduyog AQ: Tabang Sa Tugang.” Anduyog AQ endeavored to help the victims of Reming by distributing relief goods, providing psycho-social therapy like stress debriefing and other services. I felt out of place in our group of volunteers because more than half were nursing students (nursing is the most popular course in our school). I kept asking myself, what is a political science student doing here? I did not know how to dress a wound; I actually hated to see the wounds of other people. The first night that I had to sleep in the relief center, I felt very uncomfortable. There were no lights, no beddings, not even a good bed. The food that we had to eat was a foretaste of what we would be eating for the next few weeks: mostly overcooked rice and “karninas” a combination of “karne” (meat) and “sardinas” (sardines). That time, I thought of only one word: “agony.” But when I remembered what I had seen when we went around Albay right after the typhoon, I stopped complaining. At least I have food to eat, I told myself. Having to......

While he was at college at the late 1970’s, he became a follower of the radical Pan-Islamist scholar Abdullah Azzam, who believed that all Muslims should rise up in jihad, or holy war, to create a single Islamic state. This idea appealed to the young bin Laden, who resented what he saw as a growing Western influence on Middle Eastern life. In 1979, Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan; soon afterward, Azzam and bin Laden traveled to Peshawar, a Pakistani city on the border with Afghanistan, to join the resistance. ...When automobiles industry popularizes a technique of producing vehicles, and falls its cost, nowadays, an increasing number of people can afford to purchase a private car. Consequently, a challenge of excess cars on roads ensues. In virtually all cities, traffic congestion occurs every single day at the peak time. However, it is generally believed that this problem can be managed through governmental policies as well as individual behavior. The following essay will firstly outline three viable solutions, namely developments from taxes and road infrastructure, improvements in public transport services, and a decrease in the use of private automobiles, to solve the impact of traffic jams in most cities. It, furthermore, will discuss the pros and cons of each countermeasure. Finally, the evaluation of every method will be demonstrated. To begin with governmental policies, one possible method of reducing traffic congestion is to raise road pricing and to expand road infrastructure. Castle (1967) notes that charging fees on the main road at the rush hours can cut down a number of automobiles effectively because people do not want to spend extra money. Additionally, according to ideas of road pricing (Castle 1967) and park restrictions (Knoflacher 2006), it is believed that as long as governments impose road or parking fees, the usage of roads at the peak time can be reduced in metropolis, such as Singapore as well as London, and further authorities are able to spend the taxes......

The Life You Always Wanted

...The Life You’ve Always Wanted- John Ortberg The Life You’ve Always Wanted: Spiritual disciplines for ordinary people by John Ortberg   SUMMARY John Ortberg’s book, The Life You’ve Always Wanted: Spiritual disciplines for ordinary people, published by Zondervan in 2002, is a contemporary exploration of the spiritual disciplines. Ortberg first introduces the purpose of the disciplines, and then examines eight specific disciplines, followed by a proposed plan for integration and endurance. The following provides a brief summary of Ortberg’s work. Ortberg (2002) begins with a broad assertion, “The primary goal of spiritual life is transformation” and defines transformation as “the inward and real formation of the essential nature of a person” (p. 21). Accordingly, Ortberg (2002) warns of outward and inauthentic change, which includes image management, judgment, legalism, and superficiality. Importantly, the author clarifies that spiritual disciplines are not indicators of spiritual growth; instead, their purpose is to provide training that enhances individuals’ ability to love (Ortberg, 2002). Once the author establishes the purpose of the disciplines, an examination of eight practices commences. First, Ortberg (2002) suggests that joy is a command; thus the discipline of celebration is crucial so that sin no longer is appealing (Ortberg, 2002). Next, the author introduces the discipline of slowing, which attenuates an unrelenting attempt to achieve more (Ortberg, 2002).......

I Wanted to Be a Hero

...I wanted to be a hero - A profile of James Hunt The white foam sticks to his day old beard, as he takes a sip of his bud light. He suddenly drops the empty bottle so it shatters all over the floor. “Give me one more!” he yells at the terrified bar keeper. It is the fourth of July 2014, and this is James Hunt, a lonely drunk crippling who used to be a first class soldier. “It is my birthday today,” James tells with a sigh. “It is my birthday and the whole land is celebrating, except me. I have nothing to celebrate.” He looks deeply in to a decayed American flag that is hanging across the bar. Two years ago, James was a tall erect soldier with one thing in his mind and that was to serve his country. “I stepped on a landmine after just a week in Afghanistan, I never even got into a fight. Fucking Taliban’s,” he says with despair in his voice. The sound of the firecrackers outside nearly makes him jump out of his skin. He slowly bends down and pulls up both his trouser legs, revealing his artificial limbs. “I will never be able to make love to a woman again.” James bursts in to tears and signals the man in the bar for another beer. “I have given my dead swinging dick for America and for what cause?” Before the accident, James lived a life with both wife and kids, but his injury was too much for them to handle, so they left James on his own. “No one wants to deal with a crippling,” he says with his eyes again focusing on the American flag. Now he lives on......
