There are many great web and mobile applications available to users or many different platforms. Google Maps is a versatile application that is easy to use and full of great features. Google Maps is a web mapping service created by Google. There are numerous applications that can interact with Google Maps. This application is has changed the way society finds their way around the world.
Google created Google Maps to help users find their way. Sherwin (2010), "Google Maps is the most well-known map service on the net offering a basic street maps, terrain maps, satellite images and hybrid view which is a combination of the street maps and satellite images” (para. 3). Google works with a private company, Tele Atlas, to drive their Google Maps application. Tele Atlas is a world leader in navigation and location based services. The maps produced by Tele Atlas have been known to be very accurate. Tele Atlas has been praised for mapping extremely rural areas and the terrain (Sherwin, 2010). Working with Tele Atlas ensures that Google Maps is both accurate and reliable.
While the browser version of Google Maps is great, the mobile version is where it really shines. There are many tools available for use on the Android and iOS platforms. One helpful tool is the Place Pin on the Map feature. According to "Quick Tips On Using Google Maps For iPhone" (2012), you can "simply press and hold any location on the map. Tap the resulting info sheet for additional options such as saving the location or accessing Street View…” (Place Pin on the Map). This feature is handy when you visit multiple locations or want to view surrounding businesses near a specific location. Another feature example of Google Maps is the interaction with Siri, the iPhone’s personal assistant. Rodriguez (2012), "Typically when you ask Siri for directions, she'll give them to you but will use Apple Maps. If you want Siri to give you directions using Google Maps, you can do that by asking her for your directions like this: "Give me directions to ______ via transit." Siri might then provide you with a list of locations. Choose the one you want, and she'll then pull up a list of apps you've downloaded that can give you directions. Google Maps will be among them, so select it.” (Use Google Maps with Siri).
There are many changes that Google Maps have brought to users. It has become easier for people to plan out trips, find directions to businesses and find jogging routes, to name a few. All of these tools have become easier to access with mobile versions available on tablets and mobile smart phones. If a person who is browsing a website that specializes in houses for rent, the user can use Google Maps to find exactly where the house is located, what is in the surrounding area and even see a street view of the area. Some websites even have Google Maps links placed on their web page to help users find their businesses. Craigslist is one example of such website. While traveling, you can route your trip around tourist attractions, find amazing hotels, plan which restaurants you would like to visit and much. Many restaurants and hotels have links to their websites listed on Google Maps. Some of these links can lead to coupon and discount links to businesses.
There are few improvements that Google Maps can make on their own. The more companies that choose to have websites, the more Google Maps can make them available to users. Also, added plug-ins for weather, traffic and construction conditions would be beneficial. This may be available on most GPS devices, but Google Maps does have a premiere version and these features should be integrated.
Google Maps has made life easier for casual users and businesses alike. No longer is applications like Google Maps restricted to stationary devices. The advances in mobile computing has placed the power that Google has created into user’s hands at any given time. The Android OS and iOS have downloadable applications in their perspective markets. Along with the mobile capability of Google Maps, the tools and plugins, such as Google Earth, have paved the way for further advances for this web and mobile application.

R-U-Buzzed Mobile Application

...R-U-Buzzed Mobile Application CIS/207 December 3, 2012 R-U-Buzzed Mobile Application The mobile application discussed in this paper is “R-U-Buzzed”. It is a mobile application put out in 2010 by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CODOT), in an effort to curb drunk driving. Downloading the app to a mobile device is free, but comes with a warning that the user must be a minimum of 17 years old. During the download, the app asks the user if they want the information to be based on the device’s current location. When the user chooses to use his or her current location, the app uses a global positioning subsystem to locate the person, no matter what state the person resides in. By knowing the location of the user, the app can base the results on the particular laws that apply to that state. Once the app is downloaded to a mobile device, it is easy to use and self-explanatory. There are separate wheels, kind of like a slot machine. A user can adjust each wheel individually to set various criteria. The first wheel sets the weight of the person – the heavier the person the lower the starting blood alcohol content (BAC). The second wheel counts the number of hours the person has been drinking, in half hour increments. The final three wheels count the amount of alcohol the person has consumed – one wheel for beer (one 12 ounce can), one wheel for wine (5 ounces per drink), and the third wheel covers hard liquor (1.5 ounces per shot). Underneath the wheel......

MHelpdesk mobile is an app that helps mange work orders, invoices, service and repairs on the iPhone, iPad, and any Android 2.0+ device. The whole purpose of MHelpdesk is to have online secure software where a small to medium size business can create tickets when a call or email comes in from a customer and assign this ticket to any available technician. Create a service ticket, track it’s progress, record notes, then invoice your customer. It works on your smart phone, laptop or desktop The application can be used with Google Calendar which then synchronizes with my mobile device advising me when the next appointment is scheduled an hour or two prior to the actual time scheduled. From experience I was using previously Quickbooks online which was a free service and also had a mobile application as well but wasn’t always functional when needed. Since I currently am the only employee in the business, I manage what would be considered every department within an organization such as the sales, marketing, accounting, etc. Quickbooks online pretty much did what I needed which is have a list of customers and send them an invoice after work was performed. Unfortunately, they only allowed a maximum of five customers in which was fine in starting a business from the ground up,......

Mobile Application Security

...SECURING A MOBILE WORLD Introduction Today’s smartphones and tablets are more than communication devices. They are hip-mounted personal computers, with more memory and processing power than your laptop of just a few years ago. They are an integrated part of our lives… personal and professional. The information they provide is so vital that the Army is piloting their use as standard field issue to every soldier, complete with combat-focused applications [1]. However, smartphones and tablets raise new security issues. They are more likely to be lost or stolen, exposing sensitive data. Malware risks are increased because they connect to the Internet directly rather than from behind corporate firewalls and intrusion-protection systems. Security of mobile devices focuses on controlling access through the use of device locks and hardware data encryption. While this may be sufficient for individual users, it is insufficient for defense needs. Many documented examples exist of hacking of the device lock, as well as defeats of the hardware-level encryption. Once the device is unlocked, there is generally unfettered access to all apps and their associated data. Military applications require additional application-level access controls to provide data security. Unfortunately, there are gaps in the application-level security model of the two predominant mobile operating systems: iOS from Apple and Google Android. Our ongoing research1 looks to address these gaps by developing......

Hence, there exists a potential impact on socio-economic development if developing countries can harness this technology. However, there is a scarcity of research on the factors that influence mobile phones adoption and usage among micro-enterprises. This research seeks to address this gap by investigating the factors that influence mobile payment systems adoption and usage among in the Ghanaian society. Mobile Applications Market

...According to a new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of mobile application downloads worldwide doubled during 2012 and reached 60.1 billion, up from 29.5 billion in 2011. The growth will continue and annual downloads will reach 108 billion by 2017. Berg Insight estimates that revenues from applications, including direct revenues and in-app ad revenues, reached 6.4 billion in 2012. Berg Insight forecasts app revenues to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17 percent to reach 14.1 billion in 2017. Apple's App Store is the clear leader in monetisation of mobile apps and will keep the number one position during the forecast period. Google Play and Windows Phone Store are anticipated to be number two and three respectively in 2017. The increase in app downloads during 2012 comes mainly from Apple App Store, Google Play and some of the third party app stores. Third party app stores pushed Android to become the leading platform in terms of app downloads during 2012. While many Western third party app stores are struggling, the situation is different in other parts of the world. Third party app stores are especially popular in China and other markets where Google Play hasn't become the default on-device app store said Johan Svanberg, Senior Analyst, Berg Insight. Monetisation is however particularly challenging in these markets, even though free to download strategies such as in-app advertising and in-app payments are promising and have been......
