ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, whence the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought with some reason that there is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labor.

If one believes Homer, Sisyphus was the wisest and most prudent of mortals. According to another tradition, however, he was disposed to practice the profession of highwayman. I see no contradiction in this. Opinions differ as to the reasons why he became the futile laborer of the underworld. To begin with, he is accused of a certain levity in regard to the gods. He stole their secrets. Egina, the daughter of Esopus, was carried off by Jupiter. The father was shocked by that disappearance and complained to Sisyphus. He, who knew of the abduction, offered to tell about it on condition that Esopus would give water to the citadel of Corinth. To the celestial thunderbolts he preferred the benediction of water. He was punished for this in the underworld. Homer tells us also that Sisyphus had put Death in chains. Pluto could not endure the sight of his deserted, silent empire. He dispatched the god of war, who liberated Death from the hands of her conqueror.

It is said that Sisyphus, being near to death, rashly wanted to test his wife's love. He ordered her to cast his unburied body into the middle of the public square. Sisyphus woke up in the underworld. And there, annoyed by an obedience so contrary to human love, he obtained from Pluto permission to return to earth in order to chastise his wife. But when he had seen again the face of this world, enjoyed water and sun, warm stones and the sea, he no longer wanted to go back to the infernal darkness. Recalls, signs of anger, warnings were of no avail. Many years more he lived facing the curve of the gulf, the sparkling sea, and the smiles of earth. A decree of the gods was necessary. Mercury came and seized…...

Mama Day Book Review

...Discuss the symbolism in the novel. Be specific. Mama Day, a novel which has won many acclaimed awards and recognition from many in the literature world, was a fictional piece of writing full with many images, sounds, great settings and fascinating characters. The author, Gloria Nylor, uses many intriguing characters of which she places them with many actual realistic settings and situations as she describes the entire event they were faced with. Nylor centers her novel on the characters of Cocoa and George, whom both have to deal with the parallels of life in both the small island of Willow Springs and the large city life of New York. The other main characters of this book are Ophelia, Baby Girl and Mama Day. Mama Day is the most prognostic in the book and often the most outspoken, brave and powerful person of Willow Springs. What would happen if she left the town, since it seems that she is the one with the most authority there? Well as she said it herself, she has no intention of leaving. Mama Day is often symbolized with Eco-feminism, as the author would always place her at scenes in her Garden, or in the forest or with some natural inclement weather. Mama Day also focuses on what will be said the two most important characters of the novel, Cocoa Day and George Andrews. Cocoa Day is torn between two worlds of the nature and city life, where in the city everything is dependent on an explanation. Cocoa’s husband, George, is an engineer from the big city and......

...Baber 10/23/12 Beat Literature practice college paper Through out the beat literature you can find recurring themes like religion that make the different stories/poems very similar. The beat generation rejects the American culture that covers up the disasters that are happening. They turned to Buddhism for peace. A big group of people called “the beats” went off the mainstream path and started doing things that were not typical to do during that time period. Some things that were not mainstream was the beats started to practice Buddhism and the way they write their stories and poem for example the style and run on sentences. Through out the different beat literatures there are many references where the beats reject Western traditions and went off the mainstream path. In the Note on Religious Tendencies by Gary Snyder that the Beat Generation do “experimentation with narcotics […] and intelligent use of drugs.” (Religious Tendencies) This demonstrates the Beats would rather not follow the mainstream path and would rather do different things like try different kinds of drugs and experiment with them. ...no antidote to life, I tell her. How free can you be if you really accept that white folks are the traffic cops of your life? Mama tells me that she is not talking about freedom. She says that she is talking about survival." From:"How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America: A Remembrance” An Essay By: Kiese Laymon I will not lie. I never go to the website that I found this essay on because most of the news I follow is only available through technological sites. It was fortunate for me that not only did I see the link on a dear friend's Facebook page, I became so engrossed after the first few sentences that I opened the link and read the powerful story of a man's experience growing up black in the south. I read that entire essay maybe six or seven times and though the entire thing excited me, it was those two small paragraphs that spoke to me... Mama Dukes Business

...Mama Dukes Soul Food Café by Good Student Business Management November 1, 2012 Abstract Mama Dukes Soul Food Café is a mom and pop style restaurant that serves home cooked food to carryout and dine in customers. The owner wants to expand the business. By looking at the current business operations of Mama Dukes Soul Food Café we can see what areas need to be considered for expansion which is important for successful growth and longevity. There are many calculated steps that must be taken before such a big move it made. First the form of business ownership must be considered to see if it’s effective and can handle the growth. Marketing strategies have to be evaluated to see what’s working, what’s not, and what’s cost effective. Daily operations and employee inventory are looked at as well. Some employees job descriptions can be changed to help the daily operation run smoother. A general manager can relieve some of the responsibilities the owner currently has. Ethics is probably not considered when most businesses start to expand. The business still has a responsibility to its stakeholders. The stakeholders still needs to be assured the business is committed to upholding itself to high ethical standards. Mama Dukes Soul Food is Café currently operating as a sole proprietorship by Charles Drayton. Beat Generation

...The Beats were a criticism of American complacency and an expression of new forms of literature that has constantly influenced our society and living. The Beat generation started from a group of American writers who emerged in the 1950s. Among many Beat Generation writers, most influential members were Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs and Gary Snyder. All the writers have contributed to the literature society in their own different and unique way. Here in this essay, I will explore on unique characteristics or contributions that each writer has made on our literature society. Norman Mailer was a predominant writer in 1950s. He is mostly known as the writer of “White Negro”. He contributed on our literature by clarifying who Beat Generations are and how do we define them. In his essay The White Negro, he defined the Beatnik as young white people who like Jazz and swing music so much that they adopted black culture as their own. Beatniks adopted the African American vernacular language to differentiate themselves from the so-called “Mainstream”. The word they use is semantically flexible that words such as man, beat, cool, swing, with it, crazy, dig, flip, creep and hip can mean hundreds different things depending upon context to tone and rhythm. By further defining and exploring the meaning of Beat Generation, he allowed others to see what beat generation is truly about. Without his essay “The White Negro”, people would have interpreted Beat......

Beat Generation

...Beat Generation Literature Allen Ginsberg Topic 1 “Look, my suit is five bucks, shoes are three bucks, shirt is for two dollar, and tie is for one dollar. These things are all secondhand. Only my poems are first class”(Beidao, p.136), Ginsberg said to his friend. As the father of Beat Generation, Allen Ginsberg came with his astounding freedom, powerful moral integrity and unique madness. Life with poem, decadence, wandering and willful indulgence, Allen Ginsberg’s spiritual ethos of getting rid of all the fetters, thinking highly of liberalism, pursing the unconditional and absolute freedom, independence and creativity is the reflection of the truly literary, aesthetic and cultural value of his poems. Allen Ginsberg’s spiritual ethos is embedded in his writing style and language. Ginsberg's style may have seemed to be chaotic or un-poetic, but to Ginsberg it was an open, ecstatic expression of thoughts and feelings that were naturally poetic. “Moloch! Solitude! Faith! Ugliness! […] Moloch! Moloch! […]” (Howl part 2, 3-6). According to Ginsberg: “Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.” Which also demonstrates Ginsberg’s poem has no form, and it is the chosen phrases that express his mind. Ginsberg believed strongly that traditional formalist considerations were archaic and didn't apply to reality. Though the language of Ginsberg’s......

Posts and Beats

...(1) Difference between Posts and Beats Criminal Justice/210 (2) Today’s law enforcement still incorporates some of the old traditional methods used in the late 19th century. Two examples of these methods include beats, where a police officer is assigned a certain area to patrol. Patrolling may occur on foot, bicycle, or vehicle. Patrolling beats gives officers the opportunity to interact with members of the community to strengthen the effectiveness of communication and encouraging combining efforts in keeping the community safe. If necessary, beat officers will perform traffic duties as well. The next example, posts, are designated locations where a police officer stands guard and secures. Although posts do not require the officer to patrol a beat, it may still involve a small level of patrolling within their posted area. For example, an officer may be posted at a hospital, bank, or grocery store where the locations’ size is such that patrolling the immediate premises is necessary to......
