In this piece of work I am going to review the book ‘Love On The Dole’, written by Walter Greenwood. The story is based in ‘Hanky Park’ which is a fictional place on the outskirts of Salford in Manchester. The novel is written about the old days and describes in great detail struggles that many ordinary working class people face in life. The story in this book tells us of the social issues regarding unemployment and social deprivation.
The story is based in a neighbourhood where residents would help each other where possible, even though many of them did not have a lot to offer. It tells us of the hardworking jobs that children had to do, for a very low wage. Many of the boys got taken on in factories for an apprentice when they were very young but then got laid off as soon as they hit they age where they would have to be paid a man’s wage. After this happened many men faced trouble getting back into work and therefore had to live a life on the dole. As if having to live off the dole wasn’t bad enough they then had to face a ‘means test’. Anybody wanting to go on the dole would have to have an assessment to make sure they were eligible to receive the funding. The whole family would get looked at to see if they had enough money to support them. This meant that in many cases one wage had to be enough to support a whole family. They faced many struggles.
In order for these people to get money to be able to put food on the table and pay their rent to keep a roof over their heads, they had to find ways to collect money. A popular way for people to get their hands on some money was to go to the pawnbrokers and pawning their goods. Many did this every week in order to survive. Pawning items such as husbands ‘Sunday bests’ to old bedding.
The story follows two particular characters, Harry Hardcastle and Sally Hardcastle. Sibling’s who grew up in ‘Hanky Park’ in poverty. Sally sees her chance to escape this poverty and the pawnbrokers rush lifestyle by falling in love with Larry Meath, a self-educated Marxist. Larry is sick and rivals more powerful than him start to get Sally’s attention.
Harry Hardcastle worked in a pawn shop. He longed to join the Marlowe’s engineering team for a long time. Harry made it and got an apprentice working for Marlowe. The job didn’t work out how he thought it was going to and was soon set in misery. His misery soon set aside when he starts a relationship with a woman named Helen. His happiness was soon over as he gets laid off, Helen falls pregnant and he is refused the dole after going through ‘the means test’.
I really enjoyed reading this book and glad that I chose to review this particular book. I find the way Greenwood displays the struggles that were faced in the community so truthfully very interesting. The characters that he wrote about are in such detail that you can imagine everything about them, from their looks to their voice and how they are perceived in their society. He tells in such great detail it is almost like a play of the book in your head. I have never read a book with such great detail like this before and found it very exciting. He writes about the financial struggles like everyone is going through it and makes you feel like you are already aware of these struggles. It is almost like you are living the struggles with the story. I now feel that I am more aware of the social issues that have been present in the past. I feel it is a great way to gain more of an understanding and think it would be a great read for high school pupils to learn about these issues.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book I often found the old English literature hard to understand. On a few occasions I had to re-read sentences to try and make sense of them. I also found some of the slang words that used to be used hard to follow as I didn’t know what many of them meant. To resolve this I looked up the words that I wasn’t sure of on the internet to make myself understand what they meant.
Because there are so many characters that are mentioned in the book a lot I sometimes forgot who was who and had to take a minute to sit and think about the characters and remind myself who was who.

Love

...The word "love" can have a variety of related but distinct meanings in different contexts. Often, other languages use multiple words to express some of the different concepts that English relies mainly on "love" to encapsulate; one example is the plurality of Greek words for "love." Cultural differences in conceptualizing love thus make it doubly difficult to establish any universal definition.[10] Although the nature or essence of love is a subject of frequent debate, different aspects of the word can be clarified by determining what isn't love. As a general expression of positive sentiment (a stronger form of like), love is commonly contrasted with hate (or neutral apathy); as a less sexual and more emotionally intimate form of romantic attachment, love is commonly contrasted with lust; and as an interpersonal relationship with romantic overtones, love is sometimes contrasted with friendship, although the word love is often applied to close friendships. Fraternal love (Prehispanic sculpture from 250–900 A.D., of Huastec origin). Museum of Anthropology in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. When discussed in the abstract, love usually refers to interpersonal love, an experience felt by a person for another person. Love often involves caring for or identifying with a person or thing (cf. vulnerability and care theory of love), including oneself (cf. narcissism). In addition to cross-cultural differences in understanding love, ideas about love have also changed greatly over time...

Love

...Love is a word with many definitions. Although, Webster defines love as a strong feeling of attraction resulting from sexual desire; enthusiasm or fondness. But to me love is not just a feeling, but it is the way that you treat the ones you care for. You should treat the ones you love so considerately through your actions they'll know you care and love them. Love in my eyes, is making that sacrifice for someone, knowing that you might regret it sooner or later. Love is how you make another person feel when you are in their presence. Many people show or express their love for someone in many and different ways. To me love is in the actions not the words. The true meaning of love like what is the meaning of life is one of the questions that will remain unsolved forever. But right now the love is a great thing that should be treasured forever and valued as a important part in your life because it will effect all relationships, romantic or not. Love has not changed at all over the course of history and this makes it the most important emotion anyone could have. Most people take love for granted and worry about it always being there when they need it the most.      Family love is another type of love we can think about. It is the love we use between our intermediate family and our extended family members. Family love is said to be blind, only to show that love can be shown to anyone no matter condition or problems one can have. Of course we all know about the good times, hard......

...Bob Dole was born on July 22, 1923 in Russell, Kansas, the son of Bina M. (née Talbott; 1904–1983) and Doran Ray Dole (1901–1975).[4] Bob Dole's father, who had moved the family to Russell while Dole was still a toddler, earned money by running a small creamery. One of his father's customers was the father of future Senator Arlen Specter. As a boy, Dole worked as a soda jerk in the local drug store. Dole graduated from Russell High School in the spring of 1941[6] and enrolled at the University of Kansas the following fall. Dole had been a star high school athlete in Russell, and influential Kansas basketball coach Phog Allen traveled to Russell to recruit him to play for the basketball team. While at KU, Dole played for the basketball team, the track team, and the football team. In football, Dole played at the end position, earning varsity letters in 1942 and 1944. ...forms of love. Some are powerful and demand attention while others are more subtle and just below the surface. In recent years, love has drifted from these subtle levels to the more noticeable ones, namely passion. In my opinion, our society downplays the real necessity for genuine affection. By this I mean that we, as a society, spend so much time focusing on only one level of love (passion) that we tend to neglect and not recognize the need for closeness and trust (friendship). Love is an all-encompassing emotion that can be powerful and demanding, but also rewarding and pleasurable. What is the one emotion that has everyone mystified? What is the one emotion that has started as many wars as it has ended? What emotion has had more plays, songs, and stories written about it than anything else? Love, that one emotion that makes enemies into friends and friends into enemies. So many legends surround this emotion, from the goddess Athena and Helen of Troy to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. *-(* George Sand *)*- Love is the greatest gift we can ever hope to give or receive. Love is the one thing that can overcome so many of the difficult times that we are faced with in life. Love is so powerful - it can turn frowns into smiles. It can help mend the most broken heart. It can even turn all of the ugliness in the world into the most beautiful portrait we could ever have the pleasure to behold. Love comes......

Love

...Essay 1: WHATS LOVE Everybody has felt it at one time or another, be it for a person, pet, or even a non-living object. That feeling is love. Love is felt in different intensities; it may consume your whole being, or perhaps it’s just a little crush. Some people search for what seem their whole lifetimes for love, whereas others may seem to fall in and out of love on a regular basis. Of course, here we are talking about people. We can love many things, but the love between two people is unique and special. Love is rarely defined because everyone experiences it differently. What one person thinks is love, another may think is infatuation or vice versa. How does one know he or she is in love? How is it possible to distinguish between the love of romance and the love shared between friends? In order to understand love, we need to first understand the two major types of love: romantic love and friendship love. People often define romantic love based on its difference from friendship love. Would you kiss your friend? Perhaps, but it is not necessarily the things you do with your romantic partner that makes your love romantic. Romantic love is often confused with infatuation because it is so allconsuming. Romantic lovers are usually on each other’s minds. A person may make decisions based on his or her romantic partner, such as whether or not to move to a different province for a job and leave his or her partner behind. People make large life decisions based on their romantic......

Love

...Forrest Williams Dr. Mogford Definition Essay 3/17/14 Love Love is something that could be seen in multiple points of view, it just depends on the eye of the beholder. For a few, love could be purely passionate, or just plain sexual. For others, authentic love is completely unrestricted and only truly exists between family members, or between people and an immortal. And for some people, love is effortless, ever changing, and everywhere, and is felt for family, friends, partners, and pets. Though none of these people would be considered right or wrong, there is one thing that is certain: love is the most dominant force in the entire universe. Love happens between two people in any respect, whether they’re married or it’s a mutual relationship, boyfriend and girlfriend, straight or gay, young or old, love is felt in all varieties and by everyone. Marriages and partnerships are often built when people find one another normally after they first meet; these relationships can go as deep or as simple as sharing philosophical or religious beliefs. Then there’s love between people who may find that they like the same films, books or music. Love often relies on some sort of “chemistry”, or that somewhat hairy, tingly feeling that you feel in your stomach once you think or come in contact with this special person. Hormones raging, feeling overwhelmed with passion are just some of the feelings from that inter love felt through your bodies “chemistry”. Some people feel the butterflies...

Stripper on Dole

...Analysis of the ‘stripper on dole’ news article This article is a report from the tabloid newspaper ‘The Sun’. The main purpose of the article is to cause the reader to have a negative opinion towards the “mum”. This is a sensational piece of writing which means there is a lot of exaggerated detail which evokes interest from the reader. However the content is quite plain and the article contains very short paragraphs with a very repetitive introduction. I will be analysing the use and effects of the headline, strap line, the crime, picture and finally who the article is about. Firstly the headline is very bold and has quite a large font size which is used to catch the eye of the reader. The first word in the headline is the common/concrete noun “stripper” which is used to create an overall negative vibe due to the fact that strippers are not ranked very highly in society. The word “stripper” is used in his context to evoke a salacious response. The concrete noun “stripper” is followed by the noun “dole” which gives the reader the sense that this person is lazy and immoral. The verb “cavorts” is also used in the headline in a derogatory way to imply that the “stripper” is acting in an indecent way. This is also used by the writer to strike controversy in the audience. The headline includes the rhyme of “dole” and “pole” which could have been used for the effect of mocking the woman. The rhyme was also used to keep the reader engaged and to make the article stand out by......

Love

...Jackson Brown, Jr. that goes, “Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important that your own.” To put it differently, it is when a person suffers long for someone you find yourself loving him or her. However, in the dictionary, love was only described through the intensity of the feeling. It does not explain fully what to experience inside ‘love’. Nevertheless, it all arrives in some point. Love is vulnerable, unconditional and a decision. Love means to embrace vulnerability. Vulnerability means capable of being hurt physically or emotionally. Love involves both but often times, it is the feelings that is involve. Usually, when a person loves someone, he or she tends to do everything for him or her. Even if it means getting hurt, they will still continue. Being vulnerable means accepting everything is going to happen, anything is going to happen. It sounds scary but people become this kind of people because of love without even them knowing. It won’t be a weakness because this will be their strength, they will gain courage. They will face obstacles even if it looks like they are not going to survive. It is what makes them strong. Vulnerability makes its beauty visible. It is like a balloon, it is fragile but it looks so much better if it is seen and not hidden and if it is felt and not absent. It exhibits its beauty in its own way. That’s what love becomes when it’s vulnerable. The beauty of the relationship becomes noticeable. Love means to give everything......

...marriage are stripped from same-sex couples, not giving the equal right to be with the person they love and care for and what to build a life together with. Love is love, why should it be based on who you are in love with? When looking a same-sex marriage, I wonder if a person is making the choice to be with someone of the same sex, or if it is all they know and feel is right for them. Would there be a connection with who you love and how the brain works, after some research and watching a video by Helen Fisher, an Anthropologist and preeminent researcher in the field of human affection from Rutgers University I was able to better understand how the brain connects with love. Helen speaks about how she feels the brain works when you’re madly in love, the brain can tell so much about love, how it can be divided into three systems and how each systems leads to different stages of a relationship. Love starts deep in the ventral tegmental area, the hypothalamus, and the nucleus accumbens. She talks about the reward system, a system that receives messages from the brain rather it is a craving, an addiction, even an interacted with a person. It can simply be an attraction, an attachment or a sexual relationship. Within her research there is a starting point for love, and it begins with the caudate nucleus which sits deep in the center of our brains. There are different stages of love each have a particular role with the relationship progression, when looking at how a......

Dole Out

...DOLE-OUT MENTALITY vs. ACCOMPLISHMENT DRIVEN PUBLIC SERVICE: HOW WILL THEY INFLUENCE OUR VOTES IN THE COMING POLLS The changes in outlook of the voters regarding elections seems to indicate hopelessness. The voters becoming cynical about Philippine politics thus, the most important factor for them in choosing the candidates are those from whom they will benefit most. It is manifested in the voters’ acceptance of money being offered to them during election, the dole-out mentality. They accept money during the election period because they think that it is only during elections they can directly benefit from the candidates. This implies that voters have a limited appreciation of governance and policies that affect them, such that good governance is not a major factor to consider in their decision-making. Candidates win the elections mainly because of the political machinery, platform, popularity and public image. The machinery contributes to the candidates’ reach of influence particularly at the local level, while campaign funds oil the machinery to run efficiently. But some felt that the intelligent voters’ basis of selecting a candidate is their platform and program of government. For the intelligent voter it is important because it is based on the consultations and identification of the problems of the community that should be addressed, the accomplishments of public service rendered by the candidates during their respective terms. Vote-buying is especially......
