Love in Music of Then and Now During the 11th and 13th centuries during a period known as the Middle Ages a new breed of poets emerged in the south of France. Known as the Troubadours, these poets roamed the land turning their poetry into art by adding an accompaniment of musical instruments. These lyricists wrote their music in the vernacular of Southern France, French, but also included hints of Spanish and Italian from the nearby countries. These storytellers captivated the audiences with their many poems of love and romance. Even though the Middle Ages may have ended eight centuries ago, the content and romance found within the songs still flourishes today in modern songs. The themes and feelings of love have not changed with the advancement in musical technology, this is apparent in the song by Billy Currington Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right. Within this song there are many similarities along with a few differences in his experience with love with that of the Troubadour artist Bernard de Ventadour and his composition of When the Fresh Grass. In the song Must Be Doin' Somthin' Right by Billy Currington he is telling about the feelings and images of love and the woman. He talks about how women are complex and don’t actually know what they want with a man, but, once you find out what they want there are many ways to tell that they are starting to fall in love. It is the man's responsibility to touch upon these hints of love and start working with them in order to get the girl. You need to pay close attention to body language, physical traits, and the way the women react to certain situations in order to find out if the she will accept you, and if she does you "must be doing something right." Similarly to this song, Ventadour also has the same feelings for women in his song. In it, Ventadour has the same stance of which that it is up to the man to…...

...a piece of music is made”. Alan Copland stated this in his book, What to Listen for in Music, and I couldn’t agree more. So to better understand his teachings, I listened to two different musical pieces and shared my thought of how they were art rather than entertainment. “It must be nice” by Lyfe Jennings is the first song I listened to and the instrumental really caught eye. “Why a good melody should have the power to move us has thus far defied all analysis”. Before distinguishing the musical elements of the piece, I let the music move my emotions around. The beginning tempo was slow starting which made me relax but the song gets close to the ending it becomes faster and more powerful. The element that I thought had a hidden meaning was the beat, unified clapping of the hands. The song is about having a person to trust and love and the clapping of the hands at the same pace signifies togetherness in a relationship. Besides the words stating the meaning of these songs, the rhythm and melody behind it exposed it as well. The next type of music I listened to is abstract and feels like a bunch of different random people came together and started playing. This type is called Gamelan referring to many different kinds of Indonesian musical groups. The melody is basic and fixed with a repeating beat of instruments. “The reader probably realizes by now that, along with composers, he must broaden his ideas as to what a melody may be”. I opened my mind to Gamelan music and......

Love of Music

...Unit 7 assignment Ashley Jones Kaplan University HM300-13 Music to most people is calming and others see it as a way to escape from reality. Personally, it is both. For every moment in life there is a song that fits perfectly for the current mood, there is a song that can also lift you out of that mood. Music has been one of my best friends. It always knows what to say and how I feel no matter if it is a song because I am hurting or a song that makes me dance. For every action or feeling, there is a lyric that sings and speaks exactly what you feel. I am the youngest of seven children. My mother birthed four but my father had a total of seven. I was always the cute kid that everyone loved. I was bright skinned with curly brown hair and hazel eyes. I was athletic yet hard working. Me and my siblings never really got along. I was always the “odd man out” so to speak. I never related to anyone in my family but I was happy being me. The choices I make today are still the same. I still could care less what someone else thinks of me. If I feel like dancing, I will dance. If I feel like singing, I will sing. I learned at a very young age to make myself happy. There is a song by Corinne Bailey Rae called Put Your Records On. It is about being yourself, letting your hair down and following your dreams. Being careless and free, living life and learning from your past experiences. In life things may get hard but you still have to push on even when you feel as though everyone......

Love Music

...Music is an important part of life. It is a form of expression. It has no boundaries, and it follows no guidelines. Essentially, to me, music is like air. It has no true shape or definition, yet we need it to live. Imagine a world without music. All you’re left with is dust. Music is life itself. As a junior in high school, I’ve given considerable thought to my future. When I was younger, I saw myself as an architect or perhaps just simply an artist. When I grew to be a bit older, I saw myself in robotic science. Then, I was accepted into Milwaukee High School of the Arts. It was perhaps one of the best things to ever happen to me. When I first started, I had very little music instruction. Under the direction of Mrs.Garcia, I quickly was able to expand my knowledge. Less than a few months at the school, I realized that music is my calling. With college approaching at an ever increasing rate, I’ve begun to plan my life in incredible detail. The one thing that remains constant in my planning would have to be music. Music is my life. This summer, I shall begin touring colleges. My first choice would have to be UW-Milwaukee. Both my band director and private lessons teacher went there. They’re both fantastic and I look up to them. Musical education would be an amazing thing to do. I want the opportunity to watch as a child grows under my instruction. I want to be able to have someone look up to me as much as I look up to my lessons teacher. I want to inspire a child to take...

...MUSIC IN THE BEGINNING WHICH MUSIC IS OF GOD? Intro: We were created for praise and worship. The greatest desire of our life should be to praise and worship God. The reason we live is to worship Him. Worship is our first responsibility to God. God did not need to create you, but He chose to create you for His enjoyment. You exist for His benefit, His glory, His purpose and His delight. “Because of His love God had already decided that through Jesus Christ He would make us His children-this was His pleasure and purpose.” (Ephesians 1:5) When we worship, our goal is to bring pleasure to God, not ourselves. Worship is not a part of your life; it is your life. Worship not just for church services. We are told to “worship Him continually” and to “praise Him from sunrise to sunset.” Praise should be the first activity when you open your eyes in the morning and the last activity when you close them at night. David said, “I will thank the Lord at all times. My mouth will always praise Him.” God is seeking for worshippers: John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. * The spirit part of an unsaved man is dead. * However, the spirit part of those who have received Jesus in their lives is alive. * There can be no true worship unless our spirit is alive. This happens when we receive Jesus as our personal Savior. I. Music in......

Music can serve as a means of communication between two people who have little else in common. They can share their memories have a laugh together. For example, a song called the fighter united many of the players taking part in 2012 Olympics and gave them inspiration. It connects people in ways that no other medium can. It pulls heart strings. It acts as medicine.” –Macklemore. Music is so diverse that it has many genres to choose, any genre that satisfies your tastes. In music there are hundreds of genres to listen from. Many have a rich history or geographical significance, or just the artists’ personal significance. I personally like almost every genre that there is, but my favorite one would be Rock and its subgenres, because these are the ones I feel most connected to. I feel connected to Rock because it’s where most instruments are real, and it’s one of the genres that have united a lot of people. From its subgenres, Punk Rock and Alternative would be the ones that I most prefer because they calm me down, and I can appreciate the music and meanings of the songs, and most of these songs I can relate to. The way I relate with music is with my personal experiences. I listen to it either to get hyped up......

Love & Relationships: Then & Now

...Love and Relationships: Then and Now Love at first sight can seem unattainable. Some people claim to have known that they were supposed to be with someone the second they met them, and some say that one cannot experience love at first sight because one does not really know someone until they spend quality time with the person they believe that they are meant to be with. The concept and accepted, societal definition of a real, serious relationship has changed so much throughout history, and Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You are two examples that show this progression. In the 1600’s, relationships and love were very rare, men just wanted to marry the most beautiful woman; whereas in modern times, relationships are portrayed as much more casual. In Shakespeare’s play, Taming of the Shrew, marriage is a very important concept, but it is very different than it is now. It is the fathers job to give away his daughters to the most wiling suitor, or the man who makes the best deal. If a suitor is interested in pursuing and marrying someone, the suitor will approach the daughter’s father and meet with him. They write a contract, willing things to the suitor and the father’s daughter for when the father dies, such as large proportions of land, or his home. If the daughter has multiple suitors, the father will choose who presented him with the best contract, not necessarily who loves his daughter the most or who his daughter wants to be with. Petruchio and......

...Week 3 Assignment Music has been a part of my life since as far back as I can remember, it is something that I truly enjoy and find to be very therapeutic. I have always had a love for music, going back to the days of elementary school when I was a part of the school choir, and being in music class, I always knew that music would be something that was in my blood. Growing up around the time when hip-hop was emerging, I immediately grew fond of this new culture and said that this is something that I want to be a part of, I remember in high school, myself and two of my friends formed a little rap group and tried to get into the music game, we were unsuccessful but we were having fun doing what we did. Still to this day, I’m still emerged in music, now instead of rapping I make beats for some of my friends that rap, I also have friends that are producers and I have a cousin that does Christian rap who is pretty well known throughout that genre of music. Music is like a universal language, it’s something that everyone can understand and relate to, which is one of the reasons that I love it so much, and although some forms of it are criticized, people have to understand that it is a form of expression from the artist. I will always have a passion for music, it is something that runs in my family and hopefully will continue to run through it....

...Assignment 3 The Jacobs School of Music is a place that I have never been for class or performance. I love going to music events in unique venues that not only have interesting artists playing in them but also the actual venue. For a great live music experience it takes more then just music. There are specific things you look for when going to any type of musical event or any type of performance for that matter. I find it most fascinating to look at what’s going on when the concert is not preforming. There are three things to look for in order to gain the most out of an experience the venue, the artists and the history. As I walked into the auditorium in the Jacobs School Music it was clearly a venue for music performances. This is not an extremely aesthetically pleasing venue but a very nice place to listen to music. There are spot lights and other items like microphones and speakers that were not in use for this event. There were plain chairs and music stands for the two players in the ensemble and a box to sit on for the 3rd. The çeng player sits cross legged on the box and a music stand pops out of the box. The stage was built for acoustic excellence to amplify sound in the best way possible. There was a TV and a stage set up for the presentation and PowerPoint segment of the presentation. There is auditorium seating with a mix of adults and students filling about 1/3 of the auditorium. Most of the people come for the music and that’s what I found most......

Comparing 'Our Love Now' and Sonnet 130

...Comparison Essay - “Our Love Now” and Sonnet 130 “Our Love Now”, is a modern poem by Martyn Lowery regarding a diminishing relationship whereas Sonnet 130, written by William Shakespeare in the 17th century is a declaration of love. Shakespeare portrays his poem from a single, male viewpoint; this is perhaps because of the patriarchal society he lived in. However “Our Love Now” is depicted from two perspectives, a male and a female, this could be because of the changes in society between the two eras. A clearly defined structure is apparent in both poems. However, “our love now” is structured as a conversation or dispute, with four original arguments (a male voice) and four counter-arguments (the female voice). All of the counter-arguments ends with, ‘such is our love now’ except the final one which concludes ‘such is our love’ as if their love is no more! There are two ways that you could digest this poem, the reader could follow all instances of the male voice first and then the female voice or you could read it as a conversation. Sonnet 130 is in the usual style of a sonnet, one long verse where every other line rhymes, except the final two lines which forms a rhyming couplet. The opening section appears to be insulting his mistress, but the concluding couplet changes the entire meaning. In each line, Shakespeare introduces a new trait of his mistress; this creates the effect of an expanding and developing argument, which is then contradicted by the last......

...Music: Childhood to Adulthood Eddie Mathis Kaplan University HU300: Art and Humanities: 20th Century and Beyond Professor Murray November 12, 2011 Happiness, Sadness, Energetic, Revengeful, and Rebelliousness are just a few of the feelings that music can create. Music within my life has made a full circle. My childhood was filled with old country classics. As I began to grow into my teenage years, I experienced a different sort of music which included, but was not limited to, rock and rap. Now, as an adult, I place all of the music that I have listened to over the years into my own album with the addition of a few. There are some songs that I have listened to, that no matter what mood I am in bring comfort and joy. Others that I listen to make me want to get up and do something. Music can fulfill a lifetime of stories into one word. My childhood was like that of many Caucasian males in the early eighties. My dad played the guitar while we sat around and sang the old country classics from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. I still stand by this music today. The lyrics during this time told stories, many of heartache and pain, but nonetheless true and solid stories. At the time I was just singing them with everyone else but as time grew on I started to really pay attention to what was being said. I have taken many of these stories with me through the years. One of my favorites that still sit with me today is Lost Highway by Hank Williams Sr. It speaks of a man who...

...0:40 Words: 850 The Advantages and Disadvantages of Music Distribution over the Internet Throughout the ages, people have shared the love of making and listening to music. Music has the ability to enhance our emotions and add interest to our lives, so it is little wonder that we are willing to pay to listen to our favourite songs and that the music industry is one of the largest entertainment industries. In contrast, the Internet is a developing tool and resource we have only been familiar with for the past two decades, but now affects the lives of billions. Even though music has been on the Internet for five or so years, it is already recognised as one of the primary reasons for people to get online The distribution of music on the Internet has become extremely simple, and with the advances in audio formats together with increasing Internet speed, it is now possible to download not only songs but entire albums. However the combination of music and the Internet has caused a great controversy. Simplistically, the issue of Internet music distribution concerns three groups of people… the Internet users who download music, the organizations and individuals who distribute music through Internet sites, and lastly the artists and their record companies, record manufactures and music stores. As the Internet users generally argue, Internet music distribution has numerous advantages. Even novice Internet users can now access the virtually any songs ever written in a......
