The purpose of a business continuity and disaster recovery plan is to document all identified mission-critical IT systems, applications, and data recovery procedures. Fast recovery times for IT systems and applications are achievable with efficient and accurate recovery instructions. In this lab, you applied the same concepts of disaster recovery backup procedures and recovery instructions to your own data. You explained how you can lower RTO with proper backup and recovery procedures, defined a process for IT system and application recovery procedures, identified a backup solution for saving your own data, and tested and verified your backups for RTO compliance.
Lab Assessment Questions & Answers
1. How do documented backup and recovery procedures help achieve RTO?
2. True or false: To achieve an RTO of 0, you need 100 percent redundant, hot-stand-by infrastructure (that is, IT system, application, data, and so on).

...systems manage memory. One of the most effective and efficient ways to aid in memory management is the implementation of virtual memory that takes processes’ memory addresses away from actual physical addresses. This separation of processes increases the overall available amount of RAM in the computer. Virtual memory quality is crucial for overall system functioning and performance. Another key component of any operating system is process management. The real-time operating system must distribute resources for processes, exchange or share information between them and maintain a form of data structure for each. Managing kernel threads and priority processing is the integral part of the LynxOS real-time operating systems. The LynxOS RTOS takes multi thread and multi process applications to respond reliably, fast and in a timely manner. LynxOS utilizes the UNIX concept of processes, while scheduling with POSIX threads of execution. LynxOS handles scheduling and process challenges through kernel threads and threaded priority tracking. One key distinction with LynxOS is that it permits POSIX threads of execution within the kernel so that drivers can use for interrupt handling. LynxOS considers these threads normal user threads, with software priorities, not interrupt priorities. Real-time operating systems are essential for the proper functioning of an operating system and also allow the interface to manage applications, efficiently accepting and completing an......

Nucleus Rtos

...Nucleus RTOS Johnathan Rawlings POS/355 July 17th, 2013 Steven Schoen Nucleus RTOS IM sure if you’re like me your probably wondering what Nucleus RTOS is. Well let’s take a look; Nucleus RTOS is a real-time operating system (RTOS) and toolset created by the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics for various central processing unit (CPU) platforms. It’s estimated to be running on over 2.11 billion devices around the world. On Nucleus Applications are compiled to run on various target CPU architectures and tested using the actual target boards or in simulation environment. On Nucleus development is typically done on a host computer running Windows or Linux. Nucleus RTOS is designed for embedded systems applications including consumer electronics, set-top boxes, cellular phones, and other portable and handheld devices. What’s impressive is that Nucleus RTOS can be scaled down to a memory footprint as small as 13 KB for both code and data for limited memory systems. Nucleus is comprised of these main components: the kernel, connectivity, file system, graphics, and security. And here are some basic descriptions of each component. Kernel: * Real time kernel * C++, POSIX and Micro ITRON interfaces * Dynamic download * Inter-process communications * Closed Source (however, the source code is available to customers, making it easier to debug than operating system distributed as binaries only) Connectivity * USB 2.0 Host, Function and On-The-Go......

...and heap memory areas. Some of these flaws can lead to buffer overflow of memory core areas which can lead to memory being overwritten and being replaced with other I/O or buffer underflow of memory which can lead to memory leakage. Disaster happens when an operating system fails to prevent the unauthorized usage of resources in relation to embedded systems. Keywords: RTOS security; microkernel; memory management; stack; heap; interrupts, embedded system Running head: SECURITY EXPLOITATIONS OF REAL TIME OPERATING SYSTEMS 3 Security Exploitations of Real Time Operating Systems in Embedded Systems Introduction: Real Time Operating Systems or RTOS plays a central role in managing and controlling embedded systems. The primary role of an operating system is an important piece of software which helps to control the resources in their operational domain. The kernel is the main workhorse that helps to facilitate the operating system’s ability to manage the many different type of requests to use certain hardware resources such as CPU time, memory allocations, hard drive usage, etc. Although an RTOS have the same abilities as general purpose OS’s, their main constraint is with time. Time is the main variable that makes an embedded system function with efficiency since the processes and threads has to be performed in real time rather than ‘soft’ time. This can create complexities and exploits at the kernel level if a programmer isn’t careful when designing their......

Lab 3.2

...LAB 6 What is the difference between a risk analysis (RA) and a business impact analysis (BIA)? Risk analysis is a technique to identify and assess factors that may jeopardize the success of a project or achieving a goal. Business continuity planning "identifies an organization's exposure to internal and external threats and synthesizes hard and soft assets to provide effective prevention and recovery for the organization, while maintaining competitive advantage and value system integrity”. In addition to some disagreement among business continuity professionals regarding the BIA and risk assessment definitions and outcomes, disagreement also exists regarding the order of execution: whether it is best to perform the risk assessment before, during, or after the BIA. While many professionals argue that it is best to perform the risk assessment before the BIA to establish the risk landscape in which the organization operates, Evaluation argues the opposite. What is the difference between a Disaster Recovery Plan and a Business Continuity plan? A disaster recovery plan is a documented process or set of procedures to recover and protect a business IT infrastructure in the event of a disaster. Such plan, ordinarily documented in written form, specifies procedures an organization is to follow in the event of a disaster. Business continuity planning "identifies an organization's exposure to internal and external threats and synthesizes hard and soft assets to provide effective......

Describe 3 methods of recruitment and 3 methods of selection. 1.1 Explain the organisational benefits of a diverse workforce. Publisher Malcolm Forbes once said that 'diversity is the art of thinking independently together.' Diversity is vital in today's workplace. Having a diverse workforce opens up a wealth of possibilities and helps to encourage creativity and innovation. Benefits include: * Positive company image; Companies who hire individuals from a range of backgrounds gain a reputation for being a good employer. Potential customers often feel more valued and can view the company as being fair therefore give more business to these organisations. * Increase in creativity; People from other cultures, age groups and backgrounds can offer different ways of thinking and solving problems. The more ideas you can obtain from different people, the more likely you are to develop a workable answer or solution.
