Karan-Wemba Mask

This mask was created by the Mossi people of Burkina Faso. The piece was created around 1500 when the Mossi invaded the Dogon and some of the Dogon remained and continued to make their art. The mask is made of wood and used the subtraction method to make this mask from one single piece. The mask features a single clearly female figure on top of the mask. The mid-sagittal crest atop her head is an indication of its origin, the Yatenga area. The crest atop her head also serves as a line of symmetry for the mask. The piece is perfectly symmetrical. The mask also strongly represents the art of the neighboring people, the Dogon. The figure is seen to have an oval and relatively plain face. The piece is 66.7 cm tall and 14 inches wide. The mask below the figure is also shaped in an oval and is also very plain. The piece remains in an unpainted form. Eyelets on the side of the mask had been placed to increase the stability of the mask for the performer. The mask is also in exceptional condition. The use of this mask serves to honor an elderly woman, called a Wemba, who displayed great wisdom and experience in their lives, during their funeral. Many more qualifications are required, to be considered a Wemba, such as outliving her husband. The woman is seen to be carved not at her old age, but at the peak of her physicality, immediately after the birth of her first born child

The commercial starts in Chicago with an Apple fanboy waiting in line at an Apple Store to get an iPhone 5. He then tells the person next to him, “They’re saying that this phone is going to be like a precious jewel!” which elicits oohs and ahs from the people in line around him. ...Formal Communication If I was preparing a formal report for my accounting peers, my manager, and the owner of a business, I would essentially feel the need to write three different reports. Each individual or group of people will have different informational needs and different knowledge levels of the subject matter. This forces me to place how formal the report would be into three different levels which include low, medium, and high. Knowing how to read your audience and choose the right formality of the report is critical to improving communication. Ron Horton states “formalized communications can significantly enhance and improve safety, execution, and productivity” (Horton, 2012) . The report for my accounting peers would be on the low end of being formal. It is still formal, as most reports should be, but a little less intense as the other two reports. The report for my manager would fall in the medium category of being formal. You would not want this report to be as laid back as the one to the peers but not too formal because it is your boss and they usually have knowledge of the subject matter. Because your boss has the power to some decision making you want to increase the formality slightly from the report to your peers. Van Gogh's "The Starry Night" Sayre, H. M, (2010) (Fig.73) and LeWitt's "Wall Drawing No. 681” Sayre, H. M, (2010) (Fig.77) portray subject matter of different compositions. However, both depictions of art, also express, different qualities, styles, and eras. Volkov’s piece entitled The Dancing Bacha is a drawing of a gathering of males, featuring a dancing boy (the bacha) who often performed in the streets of pre-Soviet Central Asia. The piece was made in 1926 and most likely depicts a traditional teahouse in Uzbekistan. The piece’s present location is the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Barbizon School came about in existence due to artists’ rejecting the Royal Academy’s standards for art and tradition in an attempt to portray a truer reality of life with nature. Many of the artists came to the forests of Fontainebleau with loose brushstrokes, tonal qualities and softness of the subjects; they all had the same motif of creating works reflecting rural scenery. Rousseau was the most prominent member of the school and was an activist to protect the forest from deforestation. The Great Oaks of Old Bas-Breau was painted in 1864 on canvas with oil in Barbizon. The painting is exactly what the title says: great oak trees from the forest of Fontainebleau. With the bottom looking like an open field and the background of the oak trees, you will also notice a small figure in the lower right who seems to be a man with a walking stick on a trek through the forest. This was done probably with pencil on paper with a conveyed roughness on the strokes with a rather pleasing softness to it. Expressive lines were used to create the outline of the artwork and to illustrate the overall shape. Implied lines were made to create the twirls on the piece mainly found on the head of the subject. Hatching and crosshatching was then used to create a sense of depth, focus and contrast on the subject. The lines that were illustrated are very biomorphic and seemingly art nouveau in nature, a very popular art style during 1890–1910. The piece itself is flowing and sinuous. This is somehow a representation of hidden desire, a suppressed craving that probably wants to come out. A good example is, Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night which is one of the most personally expressive pieces of art in history (Sayre, 2010). Van Gogh’s lines in The Starry Night appear lose and free in a sense out of control; they are imprecise, and emotionally charged, as if the artist is expressing feelings of anguish (Sayre, 2010). Come to find out the painting, The Starry Night, expresses the authors feelings and energy toward life and death by putting focus on the tip of the church and the swaying of the cypress tree, a tree used to mark graves in Southern France and Italy (Sayre, 2010).
