A Welcome Read

...A “Welcome” Read Martie Brooks ENG 125: Introduction to Literature Instructor: Wanda Deffenbaugh October 8, 2012 A “Welcome” Read The Welcome Table, by Alice Walker is an image-filled short story that restores the past and reveals human nature. As an avid reader, I look for a story to capture me in the first several paragraphs. This story did just that. Immediately, Alice Walker establishes a graphic picture of a scenario that takes place during the racial segregation period. She creates a sympathetic mood that captivates the reader throughout the story. She truly illustrates the ideas of hope and change. Literature must hold up to a plethora of standards to be considered a successful piece of work. A formalist approach focuses on the actual form of the literature. It takes note of the development of the storyline and analyses the very features of the story itself. Our text points out “Every writer chooses particular literary tools to create a representation of something that exists in his or her imagination.” (as cited in Clugston, 2010. section 16.2, para 3.) A formalist approach can identify these literary tools. Alice Walker used a plethora of these literary tools to express her imagination and form her touching literary tale. The Setting The setting for a story to denote such magnitude must be clearly defined. The story is set in the South during the Civil Rights movement. This was a time when public places (including restrooms and churches)......

...a choice of topics and asked to make a presentation of around ten minutes with five minutes at the end for questions. This is designed to measure your presentation skills including your ability to organise and structure the information and to communicate your points clearly and concisely. Group discussion exercises involve you working with other candidates as part of a team to resolve a presented issue. These exercises are designed to measure interpersonal skills such as group leadership, teamwork, negotiation, and group problem solving skills. Panel interviews are regarded as a more objective means of assessing your suitability as you will be interviewed by between three and five people and therefore the decision is not reliant on just one person's opinion. In addition, they are usually more structured than a one-to-one interview as the panel need to assess all of the candidates against the same criteria. The expense of conducting an assessment centre is usually somewhere between $1,000 and $5,000 per candidate. This tends to restrict their use to situations where the costs can be justified in terms of preventing high expenses associated with unsuitable personnel e.g. high staff turnover or poor job performance resulting in low productivity.  Assessment centres are seen as one of the most effective ways of identifying top candidates who'll get on well with others and fit in with the organizations culture. According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and......

...are happy. These are happy, Jesus notes, because they will inherit the earth, they will be shown mercy, they will see God, and they will be called sons of God. What Jesus means by being happy, however, is not simply being jovial or mirthful, as when one is having fun. True happiness is deeper, carrying the thought of contentment, a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment in life. So those who are truly happy, Jesus shows, are people who recognize their spiritual need, are saddened by their sinful condition, and come to know and serve God. Then, even if they are hated or persecuted for doing God’s will, they are happy because they know they are pleasing God and will receive his reward of everlasting life. However, many of Jesus’ listeners, just like some people today, believe that being prosperous and enjoying pleasures is what makes a person happy. Jesus knows otherwise. Drawing a contrast that must surprise many of his listeners, he says: “Woe to you rich persons, because you are having your consolation in full. Woe to you who are filled up now, because you will go hungry. Woe, you who are laughing now, because you will mourn and weep. Woe, whenever all men speak well of you, for things like these are what their forefathers did to the false prophets.” What does Jesus mean? Why does having riches, laughingly pursuing pleasures, and enjoying the plaudits of men bring woe? It is because when a person has and cherishes these things, then service to God, which alone brings......

...Nowadays, Anime addiction is very rampant especially among students. There are many factors that urge students to watch anime that leads to addiction. Anime itself serves as a great factor that let the students to watch, because anime became the latest trend for all teenagers and having a good storyline that makes the students hook up. Another one is due to cool animation, which has a vibrant color that tickles their eyes every time they watched a single episode. Next is peer pressure, which influences a person to watch anime, when your group is expose to anime it will surely influence you. Last is boredom buster. As an expert say, "Boredom is not the lack of sensory stimulation: It is just a lack of imagination or creative thinking, so students tend to watch anime more  often and surf the internet to read online manga.” Discussion I. Anime Anime is a term for Japanese animation. The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese, where this term references all animation. In other languages, the term is defined as animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastic themes. Arguably, the stylization approach to the meaning may open up the possibility of anime produced in countries other than Japan. For simplicity, many Westerners strictly view anime as an animation product from Japan. Anime often covers more serious topics than the typical cartoon. In America,......

...the outside events don’t cause the behavior. information. Shanker (1990) adapted the principles of economics to the theories of student motivation. The free market theory All one gets from the outside is (capitalism) and the theory of the planned or command economy (communism), according to Shanker, can be utilized in directing people toward action. Shanker further stated that school incentives are aligned incorrectly and teachers are not rewarded for improving student outcomes. students have only one incentive--a diploma. The Shanker writes that incentives do work; they are a major motivator of the behavior of individuals and systems. School should be designed to use competition and teamwork to achieve established goals. Shanker writes just as in a free market system, this will result in a high level of production. All of the motivational theories discussed showed the common elements of the importance of intrinsic sense of belonging and self-worth to motivation. Individuals need to feel a sense of achievement and are motivated by extrinsic acknowledgements of this achievement (Person, 1990). 28 Causes or Predictors of Student Absenteeism According to Woog (1992), three theoretical categories identify the causes or predictors of student attendance specifically are: those which identify the cause of the absenteeism with the student or his/her family characteristics, those which identify the student's social or economic environment as the causal factor, and those......

...find enjoyable. Just because someone else says a book is good doesn't mean you'll necessarily enjoy it. Some people enjoy fantasy novels, other people hate them. Think about what kind of an experience you want to have while reading. Do you want a rousing adventure tale? A cerebral exploration of ideas? An emotional journey through the lives of believable characters? How long of a book do you want to read? How challenging do you want it to be? Are there certain perspectives you want your book to embrace or avoid? Answering these questions will narrow down the field of possible books. Nonfiction books can be a little easier to narrow down than fiction ones. Most popular nonfiction books are histories or biographies of famous people. Is there a famous person you'd like to know more about? Do you want to know more about a country, a landmark, a war, a historical event? Do you want to know more about oceans, or dinosaurs, or pirates, or stage magic? Pretty much anything you can think of has had a nonfiction book written about it. Just because you find a nonfiction book about something that interests you doesn't necessarily mean you'll like the book. Some books are well written and interesting, others are poorly written and boring. If you find a nonfiction book about something you like, read the first couple of pages first to see if you like the writer's style. If you find the book difficult or boring on the first page, it probably won't get any better as you read through. Go to...

No Read, No Write

...NO READ, NO WRITE As an Atenean, I am given life on a sliver platter. We are all known for a reality where our unlimited wants and needs are given to us in a blink of an eye. Despondently, this reality isn’t shared by all of the Filipino people. The luxuries of life we have are near impossible for others, just like the family in the picture. Children like the little girl should be in school, not in the streets. In 2010, Philippines ranks 134th in the world’s poorest and 15 million Filipinos are illiterate. That’s almost 15% of the entire Filipino population, enough to populate the entire National Capital Region. One out of six school-age Filipino children is not enrolled, figures from the Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Imagine the country’s capital, a whole region, made up of only illiterate citizens, is our country this oblivious to the educational needs of the Filipino people? Teacher should be given incentives in order to compensate for the hours of work put into their efforts to teach and environments should be provided which would make learning an enjoyable experience for both teacher and student. In other words, the government needs to use the budget to build the foundation of our nation’s education, not to squander for personal interests. . The recently implemented K-12 curriculum has been drastically applied in both private and public schools. Teachers are currently undergoing trainings and......
