The political climate in India has been volatile in recent years. The hard-line Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took over the government. Ongoing tensions with Pakistan escalated to the brink of nuclear war in 2002. At the same time, India is a growing democracy with a population reaching a billion. Indian mass culture has also expanded, as its commercial film industry, known as "Bollywood," becomes the most productive in the world. Some artists take inspiration from or appropriate actual elements of local mass culture; some also address current events in their works.

A few artists and art critics in India have begun to conceptualize their unique position in international contemporary art.

The Role of Technology in the Growth of the Philippine Textile Industry

...By: Janina Mae Almirez Industrial Analysis International Master of Business Administration Chung Yuan Christian University November 15, 2012 ABSTRACT The rise of globalization has shifted the manufacturers of textile and apparel to many different parts of the world in search for cheaper labor and maximization of profits. Trade liberalization also means that the world can be your market, and that everyone can be your competitor. We examine the current state of the Philippine textile industry in this context, and the role that technology plays in an industry that is struggling to survive in the face of stifling competition. The Philippines textile industry has suffered steady decline in the past several decades despite starting out strong in its early stages. This study aims to explore the potential for growth of the Philippine’s textile industry given a boost in more advanced technology and innovation. The author focuses on technology because this is the one thing that other countries have already adopted, and with which the Philippines has still yet to fully embrace, partly due to lack of funding and government support. This study will look at the Philippine textile industry’s production output from the year 2000-2010, and aims to establish a relationship between the production volume and the number of patents awarded to innovators within the Philippines, which will be used as a measure of the country’s technological advancement. This research used regression......

Eugenics in Michigan

...Frank Aslin, a Native American from the Upper Peninsula. With the death of his father brought on by pneumonia and his mother being unable to care for nine children alone, Aslin was sent to live in Lapeer State Home. He did quite well in school and teachers held him in high regard. He also worked outside of the home and had great judgement, but at the tender age of 18 he was declared "feeble minded" like all the rest of the residents were and was involuntarily sterilized. They took away his right to ever have a family soley based off the fact that he lived in a state ran facility and the preconceived notion that he had nothing good to offer their society—they did not care to know his story. Another helpless victim of forced sterilization was Janina Pacosz, also sent to the Lapeer State Home. She had been declared mentally retarded after a fall from her high chair, and her father without realizing, had signed a paper giving the home permission to follow through with the sterilization of his daughter. Pacosz remained institutionalized until her death. Supporters of eugenic sterilization made their stance known throughout the state of Michigan. Scientists, educators and residents a like dreamed of a better, more fit society—the type of society where intellectuals were the majority, and eventually, the only ones left; survival of the fittest, so to speak. Among the states supporters, was John Harvey Kellogg, the inventor of 'Corn Flakes'. John Harvey Kellogg played an......

Beauty Pageants

...“an aspiring beauty queen must live up to the ideals of being the embodiment of the true Filipina beauty—a dazzling combination of poise, grace, and intelligence—committed to various humanitarian and ideal causes.” Philippine beauty pageants are not just after physical beauty, it also values charity thus teaching beauty contestants to be ambassadors and icons in extending a helping hand to the less fortunate as well as advocates for the preservation of the environment. And to further distinguish Philippine beauty pageants from American beauty pageants, a Filipina beauty contestant does not only rely on a stunning face and a statuesque physique alone but she must also be intelligent and witty. Filipinos criticized former Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Janina San Miguel for her grammatical blunders during the question and answer portion of the Binibining Pilipinas 2008 pageant. Ramon Tulfo (2008) in his article for the Philippine Daily Inquirer pleaded, “Give the young girl a break!” This goes to show how discreet Filipinos are with the structure and delivery of words when it comes to beauty queens. Thus, justifying what Binibining Pilipinas the Pageant (2009) concluded of what a Filipina beauty queen should be. She embodies the deportment, values, and concepts that exist within her locality and the local people chose her because they believe she is the representation of what they are. Conclusion After researching, gathering a wealth of information, and analysing data, the......

The Future of Hrm

...certain message through CSR, a company can target specific possible employee groups. There are 4 main groups: * Product – a scenario, where an organization might produce a specific line of products which are, for example, environmentally friendly. * Diversity – a scenario where an organization stresses the importance of employing women and minorities. * Environment – a scenario, where an organization has created a very friendly and supporting working environment. * Employee Relations – a scenario, where within an organization a special scheme for medical or pension package exists. Employees who value one or some of these variables, will more likely choose the organization with the CSR policy they like best. Stefanie App, Janina Merk and Marion Büttgenc define this as an employer brand – which covers multiple aspects, all of which should define what the employer represents. This is a very new and undefined field, only consisting of a few articles, mainly focusing on frameworks and increasing employer attraction (App et al., 2012). Employer brand should not be mistaken with corporate brand – while both are similar, they based on different things. Corporate brand is based on the original organizational culture and values, and creates the organizations identity and appearance. Employer brand, on the other hand, is purely focused on the possible future employees – creating an exclusive employment offer that positively distinguishes them from competitors. If the......

Position of English as a Global Language: Political and Cultural Factors

...does is create an impression over the non-speakers that knowing that language is not only beneficial, it is also prestigious. And in case of English as a global language, the British colonization for hundreds of years and American capitalization of the previous and this century has set it into the apex. But English is not surviving just through political foundations, it is always evolving. Different flavors of English have actually created a bridge across different nations. And as it stands, it is very unlikely that some other language would topple English from its throne. The political and cultural history of English has almost certainly secured its place as the global language in the foreseeable future. Works Cited Brutt-Griffler, Janina. ...distinction of schemes grouping them into (1) the figures of repetition (plėtojimo figūros), (2) the figures of omission (trumpinimo figūros) and (3) the figures of composition (komponavimo figūros). The Figures of repetition carry a high emotional and expressive value which contributes to the persuasion and agitation of the audience. The corpus analysis reveals that the most common figures of repetition used in English and Lithuanian advertising texts are repetition of sounds, syllables and keywords, enumeration, and synonymy. Table 3.2 presents (Appendix 2) the listed figures and their functions in advertising texts. [3.10] Nutrilift 1st anti-dryness firming moisturizer with xepalipids and par-elastyl. In sum, both English and Lithuanian advertisements employ large numbers of repetitive devices which help to impress the audience through the constant emphasis of key words and ideas. Neologisms are newly coined lexical units or existing lexical units that acquire a new sense (Newmark 1988, p. 140). Formation of neologisms is very prominent in English, a very flexible language in terms of word formation (Gramley and Pätzold 2002, p. 35). Neologisms are common in English advertisements (20%) as they help to create the feeling of novelty and surprise: The second group of schemes is the figures of omission (trumpinimo figūros).
