...pastoral counseling strategy such as its goal-orientation; brief (i.e., number of sessions) and time-limited (i.e., length of each session) nature; basic tenets and guiding assumptions (briefly explain each tenet and assumption), essential interpersonal skills, and possible behavioral positions (i.e., attending, blaming, willing). The goal-orientation for the short-term pastoral counseling should be to get the counselee to focus on their own goals that they have for themselves, and not so much what others or the counselor has for them. The class presentation, Overview of a Solution-Based, Short-Term Strategy, presents that you should limit the counseling to four sessions of either 50, 60, or 90 minutes. These limits fit well within the examples that Kollar gives throughout chapters 8 through 11. Phase 1 – Getting the Present Story The main purpose of this phase is to intently listen to the counselee and gain a solid understanding of where they are coming from. The goal is for the counselor is to actively listen to the counselee. “Active listening mirrors or paraphrases back to the speaker what he has just said, thus confirming for the speaker that he has been heard.” (Kollar, 2011, p. 92) The chief aim to this counseling session is to develop an overall solid picture of the present state of where the counselee is coming from. The counselor’s role in this phase is as a listener and confidant, allowing the counselee to hear their own voice and unload any initial......

...School Counseling Standard Ten Research and Evaluation: Counselors have to continuously look at the different ways that they can improve their skills. In doing this, they have to try to get a better understanding of the skills and processes of research and evaluation aimed at improving school guidance and counseling programs. It is good to be a member of a national counseling organization that has a publication or magazine that comes out on a regular basis that helps to keep counselors informed about certain trends and changes in the counseling profession. An effective counselor is always looking for ways through research and outside input to help improve their program. In order to know what needs to be improved in a program, you must use a variety of sources to help you investigate what needs to be improved. Things that can be used are data, surveys, parent, teacher, student inputs, etc. I had the privilege of interviewing several teachers and an administrator in order to get their input on how they thought a Comprehensive School Counseling Program should be ran and what function the program should provide service for. This in turn led to an Interview Assignment Paper that summarized my finding. This will help me to improve upon things that others perceive as important to the program that maybe we are not currently doing or doing correctly. As school counselor, it will be very important for me o make sure that I read article that address issues......

Counseling

...I have always been fascinated with counseling - I find it similar to finding a prize in your lunchbox at school. It gives you a feeling of being Sherlock Holmes; discovering and solving a mystery – the mystery of why we do things. My curiosity has increased during my tenure in the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) working with inner city school children. There are many students within the district that are burdened by life. I feel this burden prevents and sometimes precludes them from learning and enjoying life as a child. I have a compassion for people – particularly school age children. As an Officer in the United States Army I was required to perform periodic counseling for soldier assigned under my supervision. I received exceptional satisfaction when one of my soldiers received a promotion because they followed the advice I gave. Additionally, I got satisfaction for recommending soldiers for assistance with marital or financial problems encountered. This experience gave me a well rounded knowledge of support resources available and experience dealing with a variety of problems encountered by young people. I attributed my success in this position to three (3) traits: I was a good listener, I was determined, and I was patient. Listening allowed me to get to the gist of the problem – to see through all the talk and get to the heart of the matter. Being determined allowed me to stick with the issue until resolved and ensuring my subordinate understood......
