For Task 1: Identify the Ports

On my personal laptop, I have 4 USB connectors and a RS232 connector. There was a diagram given on the assignment where I need to identify the ports and adapters labeled in the diagram. I will start at the top left and work clockwise around the diagram to properly identify each one. The first one contains a SPDIF optical digital audio port and 5 1/8-inch mini-jack audio ports. Next we have USB ports then a USB micro socket. Next is the blue colored port which is called a serial port. The last one on the top is mini USB ports. Now continuing to go clockwise but moving to the bottom the PS/2 mouse and/or keyboard adaptor is located. The biggest connector is the parallel port and finally is the Ethernet port.

For Task 2: Identify Memory Slots

Task 3: Identify the Configuration

The configuration shown is SCSI controller which stands for small computer systems interface which is generally used for mass storage. The need of a SCSI connector would be to hook up additional peripheral. A SCSI adaptor allow you to install multiple harddrives, disk drives, scanners, printers, and etc. through one port on your motherboard. It is a shared connection; but it can be used to share devices on two separate computers.

Task 4: Identify the Color Codes

Pink- Microphone In
Light Blue- Line In
Lime Green- Stereo or headphone Out
Brown- Left to Right Speaker
Orange- Subwoofer

Task 5: Identify the Following

There are four pictures given and I will identify each item that is shown. In the first picture there are two plugs shown, the one on the left is a VGA female connector and the one on the right is a VGA male connector. The second picture has two plugs shown as well, the one on the left is a dual link DVI-D female connector and the one on the right is a single link DVI-D male connector. The third picture has two plugs as well, the one on the left is a male dual link DVI-D connector and the one on the right is an HDMI cable. Finally, the last picture has five ports to identify. ...Below is a free essay on "Port Expander" from Anti Essays, your source for free research papers, essays, and term paper examples. A port expander is a device that allows one port on a computer system to connect to multiple devices. There are two basic forms of port expanders: internal and external. An internal expander has a connection inside the computer, typically on the motherboard, and the only part the user sees is the expansion plate containing multiple ports. An external device plugs into the existing port and then has multiple places to connect. When not part of a computer system, these devices are commonly known as splitters. An internal expander has a connection inside the computer, typically on the motherboard, and the only part the user sees in the expansion plate containing multiple ports. An external device plugs into the existing port and then has multiple places to connect. Now days there are no specific types of ports for different computers. Pretty much all computers from PC to Mac have all the same ports on them. One example of a port that was more specific just to Macs is the firewire, though these days firewire is rarely used. There are advantages and disadvantages of using a port expander. An advantage is that you get more ports to use. SAS takes one port and makes many out of them. A disadvantage is that a lot of the time they are external and can be annoying by being in the way. Also , if your power source isn’t good enough it could cause problems. When you add more devices it takes up more power, the power source can only handle so many extra ports. Port Expander

...A port expander essentially allows one to become two. What I mean by that is it allows more than one device to connect to a single port. Expanders are equivalent to splitters or extension cords in everyday life. They are usually inside the computer on the motherboard, with the only visible part of it being the extension plate showing multiple ports. Some example of the type of ports that we’ve covered and that I’m familiar with are: Ethernet Port Firewire Port Serial Port VGA Port Audio/Video Ports SATA Port DVI Port USB Port DB-25 Port Microphone Port Port expanders are pretty generic, meaning that they’re compatible for almost any PC. There is not a specific expander made for the numerous number of computer brands on the market today. The advantages and disadvantages sort of go together when talking about port expanders. They do allow you to connect more devices at one time but it also slows those devices down. Depending if the port has a 3GBps or 6GBps, all the devices had to share that speed, rather than being used individually and using all of the particular speed for one device. In most cases, buying port expanders are more convenient than trying to find a computer that comes with that many ports for a decent price. The only true downside you could run into would be the amount of power you have available on your computer. There are only so many ports you can use at one time before you overload your computer. Once it overloads, it will...

Port Scanning

...Unit 3 Assignment 1 Choosing Port Scanning Software NT2670, James Fairchild 1. What is Port Scanning? Is a software application designed to probe a server or host for open ports. This is often used by administrators to verify security policies of their networks and by attackers to identify running services on a host with the view to compromise it. 2. What is the goal of Port Scanning? The results of a scan on a port is usually generalized into one of three categories, Open or accepted: The host sent a reply indicating that a service is listening on the port. Closed or denied or not listening: the host sent a reply indicating that connections will be denied to a port. Filtered, dropped or blocked no reply from the host. Open ports present two vulnerabilities of which administrators must be wary, Security and stability concerns associated with the programs responsible for delivering the service- open ports. Security and stability concerns associated with the operating system that is running on the host. Open or closed ports. 3. Would you prefer an open source or proprietary port scanning software? Depending on who you ask? Many people in business prefer to use proprietary software instead of open source software, due to the misconception that proprietary software is better supported than open source. After several years of supporting both open source and proprietary software it becomes clearly evident that just because you pay for proprietary software does not......

Port Expanders

...research paper: Port Expander “A port expander is a hardware device designed to utilize more than one device on a single port at one time.” In layman’s terms, this can also be called a “splitter.” There are many different types of port expanders, but they can be narrowed down to two major groups; internal, and external. They are generic devices that will function no matter where they’re installed. Internal port expanders attach to your motherboard, and the user will only see the back plate. From a hardware standpoint, there is no difference in the type of computer. If the card fits, it will work. The first image in the appendix is an example of a port expander. External port expanders are not attached to the motherboard. They plug into a slot on the computer, and allow multiple devices to attach to that slot. The second image in the appendix is an example of an external port expander. One of the biggest advantages to using a port splitter is during multitasking. For example, most user interface devices are USB devices, mice, keyboards, printers, and even cell phone chargers can all be plugged into a USB slot. Therefore, the more ports you have, the more peripheral attachments you can use. On the other hand, with so many devices plugged into a single port the power source could get overwhelmed. Without the proper safety measures, an overloaded power source could “burn out” and cease functioning. Appendix Image 1: Internal Port Expander Image 2: External Port......

Port Expanders

...Port Expanders Port expanders is a hardware device designed to allow a user to utilize more than one device eon a single port at one time. It provides additional support for the input and output devices. Its most common slot is the PCI also known for peripheral component interconnect, AGP advanced graphics port, PCIe peripheral component interconnect express. It also cover audio modem riser AMR, and CNR communications network riser. The PCI slots can be used for many add ons such as video audio, I/O and storage adapters. The AGP slot was introduced as a high speed video in 1996, but in 2005 the PCI has been replaced for all of the new systems. The AGP has been imrpoving and have been reflecting changes through out the years. Note to this AGP slot it could be temporarily borrowed when creating 3D textures. This is a very important message, once the Pro AGP has been removed cover the extension with a sticker to prevent damge. The PCI Express slots began to replace both PCI and AGP slots in the new system, this started in 2005. PCI express has four types of slots: x1, x4, x8, x16. The most common version includes x1, x4, and x16. The PCIe sends information serially over on or more lanes. A lane is a group of signal paths that can collect and receive data. Full Duplex is when data is received and send at the same time. The max MBps is 8,000 for a PCIe x16. ...

Port of Piraeus

...Paliouras-Margaritis and my presentation is about the Piraeus Port, which is the largest Greek Seaport. The Port of Piraeus, as the largest Greek seaport, is one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean Sea basin and in the whole world. Also has been the port of Athens since Archaic times. The port plays a crucial role in the development of international trade as well as the local and national economy, with more than three thousand employees who provide services to more than forty thousand ships every year. SOME ANCIENT HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT THE PORT Piraeus was the ancient port of Athens throughout the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods and in fact consisted of three separate harbors - Kantharos, Zea, and Munichia. The first was the largest and used for commercial activity and the other two smaller harbors were reserved for military use. All three harbors are still used today and archaeological remains include the foundations of several ship sheds, fortifications and a Hellenistic theatre. As the sea level has risen two meters since antiquity many of the ancient installations of Piraeus are now underwater but they continue to be excavated. Notable finds at the site over the years have included several bronze statues, which are hosted in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Piraeus Port today has a range of activities concerning the Commercial and Central Ports, ship services and real estate development. Piraeus Port connects continental Greece with the......

Common Ports

...Common Ports Network ports are logical connections, provided by the TCP or UDP protocols at the Transport layer, for use by protocols in the upper layers of the OSI model. The TCP/IP protocol stack uses port numbers to determine what protocol incoming traffic should be directed to. Some characteristics of ports are listed below: • Ports allow a single host with a single IP address to run network services. Each port number identifies a distinct service. • Each host can have over 65,000 ports per IP address. • Port use is regulated by the Internet Corporation for Assigning Names and Numbers (ICANN).  ICANN specifies three categories for ports. • Well known ports range from 0 to 1023 and are assigned to common protocols and services. • Registered ports range from 1024 to 49151 and are assigned by ICANN to a specific service. • Dynamic (also called private or high) ports range from 49,152 to 65,535 and can be used by any service on an ad hoc basis. Ports are assigned when a session is established, and released when the session ends. The following table lists the well known ports that correspond to common Internet services. |Port(s) |Service | |20 TCP |File Transfer Protocol (FTP) | |21 TCP | | |22 TCP and UDP |Secure Shell (SSH) ...
