I wanted to be a hero
- A profile of James Hunt

The white foam sticks to his day old beard, as he takes a sip of his bud light. He suddenly drops the empty bottle so it shatters all over the floor. “Give me one more!” he yells at the terrified bar keeper. It is the fourth of July 2014, and this is James Hunt, a lonely drunk crippling who used to be a first class soldier.

“It is my birthday today,” James tells with a sigh. “It is my birthday and the whole land is celebrating, except me. I have nothing to celebrate.” He looks deeply in to a decayed American flag that is hanging across the bar. Two years ago, James was a tall erect soldier with one thing in his mind and that was to serve his country. “I stepped on a landmine after just a week in Afghanistan, I never even got into a fight. Fucking Taliban’s,” he says with despair in his voice.

The sound of the firecrackers outside nearly makes him jump out of his skin. He slowly bends down and pulls up both his trouser legs, revealing his artificial limbs. “I will never be able to make love to a woman again.” James bursts in to tears and signals the man in the bar for another beer. “I have given my dead swinging dick for America and for what cause?” Before the accident, James lived a life with both wife and kids, but his injury was too much for them to handle, so they left James on his own. “No one wants to deal with a crippling,” he says with his eyes again focusing on the American flag. Now he lives on the streets, and whenever he has begged for enough coins, he goes to Sam´s bar to get a cold refreshing beer. For the first time, he looks me right in the eyes. “I wanted to be a hero, and now I just want to be a man again.”…...

The Day I Lost My Hero

...The Day I Lost My Hero On Sunday of August 24, 2003 my life went through a dramatic change. I was ten years old, and I was in my room getting ready for bed. My mother and my sister were in the den going over my sister’s science homework. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. My Uncle Bryon and some police officers came over to speak to my mother. They took her outside and they tried to explain to her that my father was killed in a motorcycle accident. She started to weep as soon as she heard the news. I was in my bed sleeping when this incidence was taking place. I went to the den and asked my sister what’s going on. She said she didn’t know. I asked her what if something happened to our father. She hit me and told me to be quite and not to ever think like that again. I kept on thinking in my head that she was right and our father was fine and nothing was wrong. As my sister was walking back into the living room, I followed her to see what was happening. We walked by the door and heard my mother weeping even harder. She told my uncle and the other police officers, “Please, please you have got to help me explain to my children that Andrew is dead. Please.” At that time I did not know what to do or say. My sister fell out for a few minutes and I was crying my little heart out. All I could think about at that time was who was going to take me to football practice and who was going to love me and teach me how to be a man. Sad to say I found out not only was my......

...Campbell published The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1949 that discussed the journey of the hero in most heroic stories. I have applied Campbell’s hero cycle to The Matrix, starring Keenu Reeves and created by Andy and Larry Wachowski. The Call to Adventure in The Matrix This is the first step in Campbell’s hero cycle. This initial step is followed by helpers. * The Call to Adventure – In The Matrix, Neo is called to the adventure when Trinity sends him a message over his computer telling him to follow the white rabbit. Trinity tells Neo, “The answer is out there, Neo, and it's looking for you, and it will find you if you want it to.” * Helper – His helpers are Trinity, who respects as a computer hacker and calls him to action, and Morpheus, who tries to guide him away from the agents who try to capture him. The Crossing in The Matrix * The crossing is the point in which the hero reaches the point of no return. From this point the hero can never come back to his/her previous life. After the hero crosses over, the hero must pass tests with some help from others. * The Crossing – In The Matrix, the point of no return occurs when Morpheus offers Neo a choice of two pills. If he picks one, he will return to world he knows. If he selects the other pill, he will see the new world, the world as it actually exists. Neo, of course, selects the pill that shows him that the matrix is just a construct. Morpheus states, “I'm trying to free your mind, Neo. But I can only......

...A constituency is the place a member of parliament will represent, the residents of the specific area eligible to vote will vote who they want to represent them at the house of parliament, there are over 650 constituency’s and all of them have an elected MP who will represent them in Parliament. One reason why turnout has been fallen in the general election since 1997 may be the social and economic mix of the electorate, voter turnout tends to be lower in areas of higher unemployment, below average incomes and social inactivity. These people tend to be voters of the Labour party. The Labour party in 2001 struggled to get their core votes in these comstituency’s, this proving that thousands of people feel totally disengaged from politics and at a local and national level. Another reason why turnout may be low that of disengagement of younger voters and ethnic minorities, the decline of voter participation is highest for young voters also ethnic minorities may feel as if they are not being identified with from the leading UK political parties. The election campaign is a way of determining voting behaviour yes. With the election campaign it is easy to calculate statistics to find out voting behaviour, although you cannot determine why every person is or is not voting it gives us the closest figures we can get for voting behaviour i.e. seeing what figures are from which constituency’s, in the extract we see that in Liverpool Riverside there was a voter turnout of......

Heros

...longer people in this world who I can consider a “hero”-- not that there were many before the modern generation. In this day and age people view those who are paid to serve and protect as “heroes”, but I would kindly disagree. The Police Officers and Firemen are not heroes they are simply normal people trying to make a living. To truly be a hero, in my opinion, you must be extraordinary in every way. A true hero must be kind, generous, courageous, truthful, loyal, and chivalrous, an each characteristic must be taken to an extreme. There are many people, mostly in books, who have the traits of a hero, but none who have them all. One such person is the protagonist of the series of books named the Night Angle trilogy by Brent Weeks; this character’s name is Kylar. Kylar is the immortal embodiment of retribution, and he has four of the traits a hero should have. He is loyal; even after a fight to the death he remained loyal to his master, he is courageous; even with the threat of permanent death Kylar charged into a war so that he might save the woman he loved, he is kind; despite his horrible past he still goes out of his way to help others, and he is chivalrous; he would never do anything that would cause harm to those he cared for or those who are innocent. Another of the fictional people who has some of the traits of a hero is Harry Dresden; he is the protagonist of The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Harry has four of the characteristics of a hero. Harry is kind; he risks......

Hero

...My Hero Even Though my dad isn’t the strongest hero he still is the best, inspiring, and courageous, and willing hero to me. Inspiration is motivation which people work towards everyday. Courage is what every hero has to help others work through demanding changes and challenges. I think willingness is the best trait about every hero because helping people is what they do. In conclusion, inspiration, courage, and willingness is what heroes use to help them make a difference in the world and my life. Inspiration is a great trait which all awesome heroes possess. My dad inspires me by caring for everybody around him. This motivates me by doing the same thing. My dad is very athletic, and he led by example. This is on of the reasons why I play basketball and lacrosse. He always cares for me no matter what happens in our father/daughter life. Even if he has had a challenging day at work, I know he will be happy when it comes time to see me and my brother. Even after a hard day at work, his day is not done, I know he still works hard physically and mentally. His works habits inspires me, and gives me a level of commitment and accountability in my everyday life. Another strong trait my dad has is courage. He is always protective of others. Is Odysseus a Hero

...Is Odysseus a hero? Everyone hears the word “hero” from time to time, but has it ever occurred to any of those people, of what a hero is to them? Some define heroes as someone they admire or even someone with super powers. Just know that a hero is someone who is not perfect. Heroes have imperfections like humans do. If one were to read The Odyssey, one of the most controversial questions that would be asked if whether or not Odysseus is a hero. Certainly, some may say he is not because of all the terrible things he did throughout, but remember a hero has flaws. Otherwise than that Odysseus is a hero. Throughout his journey, it is shown that he possesses many qualities of a hero such as intelligence, the strength he shows, the hardships he encounters and how he deals with them, and so on. According to The Odyssey written by Homer, it is shown that a hero has a quality of being a risk taker, a trait Odysseus demonstrates in his adventure. The part where Odysseus stabbed the Cyclopes in the eye is considered a huge risk. “Straight forward they sprinted, lifting it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye” (Homer, 414). The reason is, is because Odysseus already knew what the Cyclopes was capable of. If he was not successful then he along with his crew would become the Cyclopes dinner. Odysseus also shows how smart and cunning he is. When he is talking to one of the suitors he says “ I too once lived in a lofty house that men admired; rolling in wealth I’d often give to......

Hero

...What is a hero? A hero can be someone from all walks of life in their very own way. Heroes are seen in so many aspects. There are the heroes that are depicted in the movies and on television, and then there are the real heroes in reality that are just ordinary everyday people from that cashier at the local store to the neighbor that lives two houses down the street. To me personally a hero is someone that gives unselfishly to others and puts them before themselves in every way. This is also a person that would go to extremes to do for others that maybe in need. In society today a hero is not someone that does something for the recognition, but just simply because they want to. In today’s society others have many different views on what a hero is, and that can be anything from what they see on TV and movies, to what they see in their family members and friends. A hero is all what you make that person out to be in your eyes. When I look around and view my family and friends that are in my life there are several that stand out as heroes, but that one person that has the different characteristics and qualities of what a hero in my eyes is my husband Greg. In my eyes he has always been my hero, but he’s a hero to so many others as well for more reasons than one. He’s very easy to get along with and always there for his family and friends no matter what as a husband, father, friend, brother, and son. He’s a hero in the lives of others just by letting them know that in life...

Hero

...“Hey mom what’s a hero” asked the child.” I don’t really know” replied the mom. So what do you think truly defines a hero. Well I think there are many traits a hero processes or at least should pocess. A hero isn’t always the guy with powers, who wears a cape and a pair of tights. Truthfully a hero can be anyone or anything, even an animal or a small child. I think a few traits a hero should definitely have are being helpful, kind, brave, and physically or mentally strong. They should also be a good role model. A person who is a villain of some kind is not a hero in fact they are the total opposite of a hero. Firstly the main function of a hero whether it being animal or person is to be a good role model. Not only should the hero be a role model for children but also for the people surrounding them, which includes adults. Another function of a hero would be to save people’s lives whether be literally or figuratively saving their lives. Many heroic figures like doctors, police, firefighters etc. save an abundant of lives every day. But that doesn’t mean that to be a hero you have to save lives every day. While some heroes save lives and are good role models others do not do both. Some heroes may just do good deeds and are good role models. However just because they don’t save lives doesn’t make them less of a hero. An example of this type of hero would be someone like your dad or mom. You could look at them as a heroic figure but that does not mean they save lives like a...

I Want to Make Me Feel Wanted

...I Want to Make Me Feel Wanted Keshia Murphy Abilene Christian University February 9 2015 I Want to Make Me Feel Wanted “Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant. There is a fuel us which needs to be ignited with sparks.” -Johann Gottfried Von Herder. Throughout life I have come to learn that I have a difficult time with needing to feel wanted. I am incredibly outgoing and have a lot of friends and family, but I do not always feel as though I am wanted in their presence or in their life. This need for wanting to feel wanted is what has fueled my career choice in wanting to be in the psychology/counseling profession. The need to feel wanted I grew up in a very traditional southern Baptist family. We prayed before each meal, we were in church every Sunday, never took the lord’s name in vain, modest in dress and speech, and always cared for our neighbors. We were that picture perfect little Christian family. I grew up in a nice suburban neighborhood. A place with great friends, fun and safe neighbors and a place where everyone wanted to know everyone. You felt invited and at home. Sounds great, until you have to go to school. The only surrounding schools were not so warm and inviting. Most of the students poured in from low income neighborhoods where violence, drugs and hatred were a norm. Going to these schools I and a few others were pretty singled out. We dressed different, looked different, smelled......

Hero

...MY HERO There are various characteristics before one can be considered as a hero. Some say a hero is selfless, doing his best in a time of need. They have compassion, putting other’s need before their own. They can sacrifice so that others can be better off. They are willing to give up something personal to achieve something greater for everybody. A hero is courageous, willing to face his fears, and meet them head on. They also possess an important skill which makes it possible to face overwhelming odds. Considering these, I can proudly say that my parents are my hero. Even though they didn’t sacrifice for everybody, they did sacrifice a lot to provide for our family. They were an inspiration for their children. They are very much concerned about our well-being. They live by their values and they are patiently teaching these values to us. They are very persistent. Bearing in mind the individual characteristics of my parents, my father is a man of few words. He sets the rules for us. It’s a very crucial decision especially we are all girls. I admire him for being a strict but at the same time a cool father to us. I grew up respecting his every judgment and learning how to listen in everything he says. Because of him, I learned how to be a disciplined and well-rounded lady. On the other hand, my mother is a lively and cheerful lady. She’s really the light of our household. She takes care of everything, from the needs of our father and to the demands of her three......

...further it will effectively manage the numbers of conveyances driving on the roads which are around shopping malls. In addition to this, car sharing is also a striking plan to settle traffic congestion (Cairns et al 2007, p220). For example, assuming that a person was to travel to work by a car, but now every automobile on roads is taken four people to work, then three-quarters of them will disappear at commuting-traffic time. Moreover, the most pivotal and efficient pattern is to use public transport services. If schools teach our next generation to form this habit, when they grow up, the rate of taking public transportations can soar in a foreseeable future even though taking buses or trains may spend (Simon, you said it is a wrong word, but I don’t know what’s wrong?) more time than driving private vehicles. Aforementioned solutions can lead to some benefits and obstacles. Regarding the survey of home shopping, some people might concern for a quality of goods, particularly vegetables as well as fruit because they only see those pictures before get real ones. As for another measure of car sharing, while most individuals consider that it enables to shrink dramatically the number of vehicles on the roads at rush hours, few residents would argue that it is inconvenient because there are different areas between their occupational places and others’ who take the same car with them. Although, maybe, these arguments are true, it is by no means insurmountable. For example,......
