I MISS THE CANDY

I miss the candy, and the cute costumes the little children wore with such glee. I could sometimes even see a glimpse of supreme genius in the adult participants’ attire if I looked closely. One such memorable occasion, I saw two gentlemen dressed as characters from the movie “A Clockwork Orange.” This turns out to be a very obscure movie; as I have recently discovered. Uncharacteristic boldness propelled me to confirm the reference and relate my woes on procurement. Turns out they had similar difficulties for research on their costumes. Even the all mighty worldwide web work [just kidding] could burb up little but still photos from the movie. Bummer.
I digress….. Sorry.
Ehh hemmm I miss the time when little princesses, super heroes, witches and the like were herded through the eagerly waiting neighborhoods. The well-kept lawns and street facing gardens still valiantly struggle; holding on to the last remnants of summer beauty, but chilling nights have begun to take toll on even the best landscaping efforts, amateur and professional alike. Many took advantage of natures’ outcome to make them especially scary in theme decoration choices. I had trees, lots of different ones. There were tall mature oaks, Christmas pines of all types, along with a colorful variety of maples and various fruits. Each one capable, in the right hands, of transforming into a corner of the eye heart stopping something that allows only the bravest of the tiny ones’ to pass. Early winters enhance the quality of the scary menu. Shadowy areas from snow mounds newly ploughed to ease motor travel but little relief for those on feet and in costume, providing places for things that jump in the night. The rest wait for either the designated older brother or sister of the group, trying hard to keep distance from them, a familial duty levied for the promise of reward later. Or more likely the parents, {trying too hard to fit in or be cool} or whatever the current, that still results in cringing among the waiting goblins and pirates, who are trying (hopefully, weather permitting) to be able to enjoy the last “family outdoor” time before the snow flies. Despite the eerily lit spaces away from the door, the excitement radiating from the groups overcomes the haunted spooky looking distance to their ultimate goal. The glowing safety of the porch light represents the prize to the quester. The brave little sharp-dressed tykes cautiously trudged forward, all of them hoping for the mother-lode {usually consisting of the full size version of their sweets craving little hearts-desire}, that would make the trip worth the fright. Or at least not fruit, pencils or toothbrushes. I hated getting toothbrushes, gees, I mean really?? Just turn off the light, and try not to give a reason for special ‘baker’s dozen’ re-visit, silly dentist.
Oops……did it again.
Sorry, really.
Let’s try again. Onward goes the march plundering one house after another. Sending subtle (some, not so much!) signals to the passing groups of various costumed superstars as to the best of pickings and which areas were headed for nocturnal appointments of one sort or another. Confections compared and traded, fruits discarded, and pencils usually lost by the end of the night. The local hospital donated X-rays of the booty as a community service, always sporting a good crowd by dark. Toothbrushes followed a unique path in the trick or treat world, often littering a dentists’ front yard or closest trashcan. After as many trips to the porches as each respective group felt up too, the candy dried up or the older kids were recognized too many times; the porch lights dimmed for the night. If you were very lucky in the parental group, your small fry has exhausted his sugar rush with fright induced adrenaline, resulting in an utterly spent child. Thus giving you first pass through the haul, and passing judgments to obtain a few choice morsels, naturally. Most of what I miss was the sense of being safe in spite of the potential nightmares and bellyaches soon to follow. You did not have to worry about the fact that you were going up to a strangers’ house and asking for a treat, avoiding an unpleasant trick. The things on TV and in newspapers that happened in the rest of the world always kept out of my neighborhood. Times have changed and not always for the better. Horrible crimes against adults and children brutally ripped the innocence out of a simple celebration. Whose worst offence is that it affords an individual the opportunity to wear a mask and pretend? Sadly it is taken advantage of in the most nefarious ways. Destroying the once fun and frivolous by-product of a holiday I am convinced was invented by dentists all over, in the wake of Valentines and Hallmark. (kidding, sort of) Throw the bad rap placed on otherwise peaceful pagan groups in the mix and no one is safe anymore. I really wonder about the hypocrisy in any faith that preaches tolerance and forgiveness, but fails utterly in execution. Really, I think I will go with the alien theories – they know they‘re silly and proud of it.
Okay, little detour but bringing it all home for you now, promise.
What brought this about you ask?? Allow me to enlighten you.
Becoming a parent.
Simple as that. Now that there is a little mermaid or cowboy (or many, in some cases) depending on you to protect them, taking chances becomes a thing of the past. Even chances that you never considered as chances are given the once or twice over with tiny tots on the line. Now they go to as close to a controlled environment as possible, the local mall. The scary factor that produced the counter agent to sugar is now obsolete, resulting in wild beasts that bear some vague resemblance to your precious offspring. Who is scared now, knowing they will be up until all hours, not from nightmares but from candy that used to make everybody happy? X-rays are mandatory because the crazies are all around and they look just like normal people. Me, that’s who. As a card carrying member of Parenthood, I am sad and terrified for my little overdressed wunderkind because they will never know the freedom I had back in the day. Even the costumes and masks can be harmful, what with gases escaping and flame retardant not up to standards. Worry has become second nature and it interferes with the fun I used to have. Innocence is lost and I miss the candy.…...

Did I Miss Something

...Did I Miss Something? What I believe he is trying to claim according to the story he just wrote. He is claiming that he cannot fail to accept the fact that divorce has left him with certain scars. With those types of scars it cannot be done away so easily. In the story he says that he has lived a good life by sharing time to time between his two parents but him thinking about it, he feels that something is a miss by this. It may not be something evident as many others in cases experience by others; this is, is own point of view we still have to remember. If I have to say where he would be stating his claim at, I guess it would be the third paragraph of his story. From my experience from a divorce family it’s hard to say for me because I’ve been somewhat like a loner type and keeping to myself about many things and not telling people this and that but again not many ask about it in the first place and it is bad because that child can hear the fight between the two all the time and it can mess up the kid as to how he or she grows up but that’s just my somewhat point of view. I guess that the evidence Putnam is trying to base it on with some solid ground, is the vague memory of his younger years with the fight between his two parents which many kids should not see or hear. He then states that being upstairs in the hallway in the state Philadelphia at home of course, he starts to remember seeing shadows. Those types of shadows start to move back and forth and with the voices...

Candy

...Amit's First Candy In this essay I will be talking about my experience regarding my first candy. I don’t remember exactly when, where and which candy I had. However, I still remember my aunt used to bring me lots of candies and those candies were always special. These candies were special because they were brought from abroad. My aunt lived in Canada. And the candies in Canada, in comparison to the candies in India tasted different. I still remember how I used to wait for my aunt to come home and bring me candies. I love eating candies. As a child, whenever I was hungry I always felt like eating candies. When I would cry, my parents would give me candies to keep me quite. So these small-small things, make my experience memorial. I will remember my first candy experience my whole life. Every child is fond of sweets like candies, chocolates etc. I was no different from other children. Whenever I got a chance to buy sweets like candies I never missed the chance. I still remember how I used to convince my mother to buy me candies. I would have the urge to eat candies, when I saw other children eating candies. I still remember how I used to fight with my siblings for candy. And I always won the fights and had the most candy. Even though we are grown up, we still fight over small things like candy just for fun. It is hard to believe that we used to cry when we didn’t get the same amount of candy divided amongst my cousins and I. It wasn’t easy to share the candy fairly.......

...Theme: “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing!” Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2: 9-10 “But as it is written, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the hearts of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God.” Subject: “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing!” (I wish I had two people in the house this morning who would high five somebody and tell them, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing!”) • Yeah, yeah, when the windows of heaven are opened and it’s my time to reap; I don’t want to miss a thing! Lead in Candy

...Lead in Candy In this essay I will write about the growing concern of toxic candy, or more specifically, lead in candy. The California Department of Health Services has documented more than 1,500 tests of Mexican candy since 1993, and one in four of those results have come up high for lead. (McKim, Jenifer. Sharon, Keith and Heisel, William., the Register August 21, 2013) How does the lead even get into the candy? For starters there were 112 brands of candy; most of those came from Mexico that registered dangerous levels of lead over the past decade. In 101 cases, no action was taken against the candy makers. The results were kept confidential, and the candy remained on store shelves. Keeping the public misinformed, or hiding the truth will allow the public to keep purchasing toxic candy. The state makes no effort to notify candy companies in Mexico when their brands test high enough to harm a child. Candy maker after candy maker said they had no idea regulators had found lead in their products. Are the Candy producers truly ignorant to this situation? It first must be understood that regulating the fast growing $620 million Mexican candy industry is riddled with problems because they have too few resources, they have no jurisdiction in Mexico, and if the United States has no jurisdiction, how can they stop Mexico from pumping lead into the candy? A rational response should be for the United States to place a block or boycott on candy producers from Mexico. Without doing......

Bob's Candies

...Bob’s Candies Bob loves making candy, especially varieties of caramel, including plain, chocolate dipped caramels and chocolate dipped caramels with pecans. Bob has received lots of compliments from his friends and neighbors, and several have encouraged him to start his own candy making business. After several days of research, Bob finds that the national average amount of money spent annually per person on this type of specialty candy is $75. Bob believes that the citizens in his area spend more than that per year. Knowing whether or not this is true could help Bob make a wise decision regarding his future business plans. Bob wants to use statistics to support his claim, and to help him obtain a small business loan. Bob also wants to find an estimate of the true amount of money local citizens do spend on this type of specialty candy. Bob randomly selects several people from his local phone book and asks the person that answers how much money they typically spend per year on candy like he will make. He obtains the following results (in dollars): 75, 74, 80, 68, 79, 85, 77, 82, 79, 67, 90, 72, 76, 75, 69, 85, 78, 79, 82, 66, 75, 85, 90, 76, 85, 67, 89, 82, 69, 79, 82, 80, 84, 79, 78, 81, 77, 84, 80, 76. Based upon these results, Bob is hoping his area has a good customer base for his new business. Bob also hopes the bank is impressed with his use of statistics and will grant him the loan he needs to start it! Questions: 1. What is an appropriate......

Candy Store

...Candy Store In this chart, there is an assumption that each of the 24 franchise stores will generate $570,000 in revenue each year. This projection is within 8% of Candy Andy’s revenue in 2013, however it is unreasonable to assume that this is accurate. The original Candy Andy store is located in a town with a summer population of 54,000 and a winter total of 9000. Each of the new franchises will be located in areas with varying populations, and the size will heavily influence the amount of demand generated for Candy Andy’s products. Therefore, this projection is not directly repeatable throughout each of the 24 franchises. This projection also assumes that sales will be consistent throughout three years. This is not a reasonable assumption, especially since it is highly unlikely that all 24 stores will be ready and open within the first year. This chart assumes that TURG has the necessary capital to build 24 franchise stores before day 1 of the first year following the deal. This is extremely unlikely, as building and implementing the new franchise stores will take a substantial amount of time and capital. When making her decision, Edith must consider how she would adjust her current marketing efforts if she declines the franchise offer. Her current marketing strategy involving AdMad costs $4500 per month. Her return on marketing investment is extremely low, since she has not noticed a significant change in Candy Andy’s sales. If Edith keeps her business, she......

Lead in Candy

...Lead in Candy A recent issue that has generated a good deal of controversy is contaminants in children's candy, imported mostly from Mexico. The Orange County Register (OC Register) conducted an investigation and “recommendations emerged from sources during the course of the investigation” (2013). Recommendations include, but are not limited to, train “candy makers” on ways to reduce lead; testing of manufactures and providers of chili, tamarind, and packaging; improve communication by sharing data in-house and with Mexican officials to coerce change of production methods; and publicize the effects of lead on children’s health (and in adults, especially during pregnancy), such as delayed growth, hearing and weight loss, untimely birth, permanent brain damage and even death, for example (UCLA Report, 2009). The OC Register (2013) states that, “some changes have occurred on both sides of the border.” As an example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) relayed a letter to candy producers saying it will start the process of setting a lower acceptable level of lead in domestic products, and the agency stresses that the new maximum levels are “achievable under good manufacturing practices in the production of candies and candy ingredients” (Food Navigator USA, 2006). In addition, it is important to mention that the number of cases of lead poisoning have dropped dramatically over the last two decades, due largely to both environmental regulations and......

Candy Mountain

...By: Ali Becksted Hour: 7th Candy Mountain Charlie walked into the moonlight mist all the way to his friend Bob's house. When he got to Bob's house he pounded on the doorbell until his friend Bob answered the door. When Bob answered the door he asked; "Charlie what the hell do you want? It is two o'clock in the morning" Charlie replied with excitement in his voice, "I wanted to know if you would like to go to Candy Mountain with me and Joe?" Bob said, "OK!" Bob wouldn’t let Charlie come inside because he was in the middle of banging his wife. Charlie complied with Bob and understood the circumstances, and slept in the back of his 1957 Chevrolet truck under the stars with his pet alligator named Fluffy. The next day Charlie, Bob, and Hector, the third wheel, started the journey to the unknown land of Candy Mountain. The quickest way there was to sail, but since no one knew how to do that, they had to take Hector’s very large fishing boat. Charlie walked on the boat and he ran all the way to the cabin and sat down on his bed and he flipped the channel to the Daily News. On the news there came a national alert... “There is no such thing as a Candy Mountain. Too many unicorns had died on the mission to Candy Mountain, because they were all trying to take small fishing boats, so the tsunamis would kill them!” Charlie's eyes filled with tears and his heart was broken, he was so excited to be the one to find this magical island. After six days and seven nights, Charlie, Bob,......

I Miss the Couch

...I miss sitting in a couch and stare. Just stare. I am really stressed at the moment. I have a lot of things to do and not a lot of time to get them done. It has been like this for a while now. Actually it started in my vacation. Funny, huh? I had a two months period with NO school, NO to-do’s and NONE of the normal activities, which take my time. But somehow I still managed to stuff so many plans into my two months of break, that I was completely exhausted, when I finally went back to school. Of some reason I could not overcome the challenge of spending time on doing nothing, doing nothing at all. I failed. Badly. What is wrong with me? The funny thing is that when I came back to “civilization” after being away for such a long time, most of my friends had had the same problem. Apparently we, humans of the Western Europe, are exceptionally great at larding our time off with everything else than sitting in a couch and just stare. Why is that? Are we afraid of being inactive and nonsocial? What is it in us that simply demand us to have plans, being on the road and not prioritize some “Home-Alone-Time”? Well, I know that there are different personalities, different people and different needs. I, myself, am very extrovert, so I love having plans. I am feeling the best, when I am around people. But the amounts of plans I and many others have in their breaks are frightening. Why can we just not let our normal, stressed ordinary days take a rest, and do the same with ourselves? Of...

Gym Candy

...Gym Candy By: Carl Deuker How do the characters change or evolve through the course of the story? What events trigger such changes? In the story I read called Gym Candy a boy was just going into his freshman year and wanted to be a starter on the varsity team. And when he didn’t make it as a starter he only got one chance to do something when the starting running back got into trouble and was suspended for the final game of the season. If the team won they went to the playoffs, but Mick (the main character) got stopped one foot short of scoring the winning touchdown with no time remaining. When he thought about it he knew that the starter would’ve made it and that if he took just a few steroids before the season he could get. So he took them and couldn’t stop himself from taking more later into the season and got caught and failed at committing suicide. So when a character changes in a story they usually do something bad they shouldn’t have and make up for their mistakes and come back and make it to the top again. The evens that trigger those things are something the character doesn’t like, like in Gym Candy when Mick gets stopped on the goal line then out lifted in the weight room. What are you willing to give up to be part of a group? How important is it to be part of a group of friends or team? How do the characters in your book respond to the issue of fitting in? There are a few thing s I’m willing to give up to be part of a group. One of them is some time.......

Candy

... Home >> Candy Processing Process Engineering Candy Processing Candy, specifically sugar candy, is a confection made from a concentrated solution of sugar in water, to which a variety of flavorings and colorants is added. Candy is made by dissolving sugar in water or milk to form a syrup, which is boiled until it reaches the desired concentration or starts to caramelize. The type of candy depends on the ingredients and how long the mixture is boiled. Candy comes in an endless variety of textures from soft and chewy to hard and brittle. Caramel, toffee, fudge, praline, tablet, gumdrops, jelly beans, rock candy, lollipops, taffy, cotton candy, candy canes, peppermint sticks, peanut brittle, chocolate coated raisins or peanuts, hard candy (called boiled sweets in British English) and candy bars are just a few examples of the confections that are sold under the generic name "candy."
