Business Study

...Creating a Winning Culture OB- 72 p. 10 was best for the company, not what was best for some department or person. We agreed that since we wanted to grow, the head count needed to grow as well. This is how we linked and aligned all goals in one, to avoid conflict. The Andean team did two other things to try and build a “best for company” decision-making process. One of these was to change the structure and create GBAs—geographic business accountability units. The GBAs were multifunctional teams responsible for the business in a defined geography. As described in a white paper written by Sergio Nacach and Mario Escudero in 2007: This … GBA is led by the sales leader in charge of the geographical area who acts as a country manager for his own geographical area.… He also has to interact with different support areas and the sectors that own the products…. The leader of this geographical team … has the challenge to manage a multifunctional team for the GBA in order to achieve significant improvements in business aspects…. Unlike the previous structure … in a GBA, not only sales executives … are entitled to receive incentives, but all members receive monthly incentives associated with geographic achievement and other associated qualitative drivers.1 As noted in this passage, emphasis was put on ensuring that the incentives encouraged—or at least did not discourage—coordination across functions and having people take actions consistent with what was good for the business......

Ground-Based Augmentation System (Gbas)

...Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) is a satellite navigation technology added to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to augment the entire performance. GNSS basically consists of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Global’naya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS). However, due to the ionospheric gradient, the performance of GNSS with GPS and GLONASS only is limited. Four Augmentation Systems are thus added to GNSS, including the Space-Based Augmentation System, Ground-Based Augmentation Systems, Airplane-Based Augmentation Systems, and Ground-Based Regional Augmentation Systems, in order to improve accuracy, integrity, continuity of service, and availability of navigation. Among the four augmentation systems, GBAS is the only one capable of meeting the most stringent operational needs of aviation, e.g. takeoff and landing in low-visibility conditions. Therefore, it has been effectively applied to the support of takeoff and landing operations. GBAS consists of a ground segment, airborne segment, and space segment. To facilitate the navigational performance augmentation, GABS is used to develop differential corrections for each satellite, and broadcast these corrections to the airborne receiver over a very high frequency (VHF) data broadcast (VDB) signal transmitted in the 108.0-117.975 MHz band. The ground segment consists of three or four reference receivers located on or near an airport property. These receivers track the signals from......

Court Ruling on Ozark Airlines

...Module 2 Discussion – GBA-335 Prof Fisk, The Court’s ruling was in order. Considering safety of the Airline passengers and the entire organization, it was not in the interest who is best or not but whoever meets the 50*50 airline view business necessity. The business necessity here is an evidence record to show that an individual’s ability to operate all the instruments in the cockpit and reach the design eye reference point. Individual’s height is important to the safe and efficient operation of a plane. The criteria for hiring – five-foot-seven-inch minimum height requirement is not a sexually discriminatory issue. Anybody (male or female) that meet this requirement could be hired. In a prima facie case of sex discrimination – because the number of male with five-foot-seven-inch outnumber the female hence it could be regarded that pilots are exclusive for male hiring. In my opinion and to ensure hiring of female pilot entry, the Court had to tell Ozark to reduce the minimum height to five-foot-five-inch. An individual who fails to meet certain requirement for hiring, does not mean that ‘the employer’s general policy and practice concerning hiring should be amended to suit him/her. The criteria is job-related (cf. 29 C.F.R. §1607.5(c)(2)(iii). “The job of airline flight officer is clearly such a job”. So, the trial Court did not err in its ruling. Ref: Twomey, D (2013). Nextgen Ils

...new airborne and traffic management procedures (FAA, 2010). Among both the current and emerging technologies to be utilized in NextGen, the systems are primarily centered on putting more performance and traffic management responsibilities into airborne avionics, which is a significant shift from the current system of ground based ATC. This shift is a necessity due to the practical impossibility of scaling up the current ATC system and its personnel to address the anticipated doubling of traffic in the NAS in the coming decades (FAA, 2010). Among the systems that will be the foundation of NextGen are the Global Positioning System (GPS) in Earth orbit, ground based Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS), and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) aboard aircraft (JPDO, 2007). These systems, and others, will be used to replace terrestrial based radio navigation systems such as Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range (VOR) and landing approach systems such as the Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). Although there are significant economic gains to the elimination of such ground based radio beacons, there is a concern about the pace and scope of the elimination of these navigation beacons, particularly in light of the dismantling of ILS installations which guard over a crucial phase of flight. ILS provides an accurate depiction of an aircraft’s position as it approaches a runway, allowing an aircrew to safely guide their......

...Standardization Committee, because tone is being fully marked. Although it is ppossible to use the falling tone mark on nwânyì (woman) to avoid writing nwaànyì with double vowels, it is not possible to use any single tone mark on niīle/niīne (all) to represent the high-step sequence correctly. It is also felt that the recommendation of the Standardization Committee is inconsistent in that certain words, such as àsaà (seven) are normally written with double vowels. 5.3 Syllabic nasal The syllabic nasal has been marked as follows: m before labial sounds (p b kp gb m f) and approximants ( w y) n before all other sounds in accordance with the recommendations of the Standardization Committee. Examples: m m̀ pì (horn), mbà (town), mkpụlū (seed), m̀ gba (wrestling), mmā (goodness), m̀ fe (lightness), mwepù (taking out, subtraction), m̀ yò (sieve) n ǹtu (nail), nnwa (child), nsi (poison), ǹnyàafù (yesterday), ǹjọ (evil), nŋòmi (imitation), etc. 5.4 Tones The system of tone-marking introduced by Green and Igwe (1964, 1967a, 1967b, 1970) has been employed, which uses only two tone marks (low and step). Nwachukwu (1983a) proposes using three tone marks (high, low and step) to mark the first tone of each level, and to leave subsequent tones on the same level unmarked. A simplification of this is to use only two tone marks (high and low) to mark the first tone of each level, with a high after a high representing a step, and to leave subsequent tones unmarked; this system was used......

Jakubowicz V. Dittemore, (W.D. Mo.2006)

...GBA 335 Admin and Personnel Law Dr. Elias Paulson December 13, 2015 Case Brief 2 Name Jakubowicz v. Dittemore, (W.D. MO.2006) Procedural History Before the arranged date for this trial, both parties informed the United States District Court and requested to submit their evidence to the Court in writing. This included dispositions from Felix T. Vincenz, the Director of Facility Operations for DMH, and Linda Roebuck, the Deputy Director of DMH. Stipulations from both parties were also submitted. The plaintiffs submitted a memo that was dated on April 6, 2005, from Schuffman to all employees informing them of the random drug testing program and the DMH's protocol for the drug testing. Facts Missouri Department of Mental Health adopted a policy calling for the random drug testing of all of its employees. Three employees objected to the policy and sought a court order declaring it unconstitutional as applied to them. The employees held the positions of Psychiatric Assistant II and Office Support Assistants. The department claimed that the policy was justified because of its belief that illegal drugs were being used by some department personnel and because each employee serves as a caregiver and role model with respect to patients. The evidence regarding illegal drug use concerned employees at residential facilities for mentally retarded patients. The plaintiffs did not work at these facilities. Administrators were unable to cite specific individuals or......

Omics and Vaccinology

...proteomics is the study of the complete collection of proteins expressed by a cell, tissue, or organism (Bagnoli et al., 2011). These Omics’ research and its associated technologies have transformed vaccine development. In the past, vaccines were developed using inactivated pathogens (i.e., first generation vaccines) and cell components from microbes that had been purified (i.e., second generation vaccines) (Bagnoli et al., 2011). Omics is increasingly being applied to vaccinology, resulting in the development of third generation vaccines (Bagnoli et al., 2011). There are three chief omics’ approaches to vaccine discovery: “genomics-based antigen selection” (GBAS), “proteomic-based antigen” selection (PBAS), and “immunomics-based antigen selection” (IBAS) approaches (Bagnoli et al., 2011, pp. 545-554). GBAS uses comparative genomics (the comparison of various genomes to ascertain antigen conservation) and pan-genomics (the study of basically every gene present in every strain of a species) (Bagnoli et al., 2011). This results in an increased understanding of “intraspecies and interspecies antigen variability and distribution” (Bagnoli et al., 2011, p. 549). Antigens that found in both pathogenic and nonpathogenic commensal strains are unlikely to be responsible for virulence; such antigens are also unlikely to be prime protein vaccine candidates (Bagnoli et al., 2011). Antigens that are particular to pathogenic strains are chosen as chosen as hypothetically......

How Will the World End

...disease, and mild enlargement of the spleen (splenomegaly). How common is Gaucher disease? Gaucher disease occurs in 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 people in the general population. Type 1 is the most common form of the disorder, and occurs more frequently in people of Ashkenazi (eastern and central European) Jewish heritage than in those with other backgrounds. This condition affects 1 in 500 to 1,000 people of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. The other forms of Gaucher disease are uncommon, and do not occur more frequently in people of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. What genes are related to Gaucher disease? Mutations in the GBA gene cause Gaucher disease. The GBA gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called beta-glucocerebrosidase. This enzyme breaks down a fatty substance called glucocerebroside into a sugar (glucose) and a simpler fat molecule (ceramide). Mutations in the GBA gene greatly reduce or eliminate the activity of beta-glucocerebrosidase. Without enough of this enzyme, glucocerebroside and related substances can build up to toxic levels within cells. Tissues and organs are damaged by the abnormal accumulation and storage of these substances, causing the characteristic features of Gaucher disease. Diagnosis A definitive diagnosis is made with genetic testing. As there are numerous different mutations, sequencing of the beta-glucosidase gene is sometimes necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Prenatal diagnosis is available, and is useful when there is a known......
