Weekly Journal #1 Chapter six of the Canary text is all about presenting the self, something that was very relevant to me last week. Last week was the first week of school and it is important for me to make a good impression on my peers and professors. I was all about engaging in impression management last week and to be honest, I still am this week. Impression management is when an individual is consciously trying to control how others perceive them. I spent more time than usual in the mirror before class last week, trying to decide what to wear and making sure I look nice for class. Normally, I do not care what I look like, but since it’s the first week of school I want people to think that I do not dress like a slob and have some sort of style. Along with taking forever to decide what I wore, I took forever doing my hair. I used a few products in order for my hair to look nice so that once again people would think that I am very dapper. Even during class I was trying to manage other people’s impression of me. I would think for a while on what to say when we had to introduce ourselves to our peers and teachers. I kept repeating what I was going to say in my head and made sure that I added some humor to it so that people would think that I am a funny person. I’m not embarrassed or ashamed that impression management is something that I practice because everyone does it whether they admit it or not. As I was reading the text and came across the self-presentation strategies and I immediately began to think of the television show “Big Brother” This reality show involves 16 different people from around the country living in a house where there every move is watched with the goal of being the last one standing. When you are able to watch the contestants every move and word, you are able to learn a lot about them. The finale is tomorrow night and there are only three left and they each have been using different self-presentation strategies. Vanessa, a pro poker player, clearly resembles the intimidation strategy. She has been by far the best player this season as she has won lots of competitions and has made big bold moves. People in the game knew that she was on to take out months ago, but they feared her so much that they could not evict her. Now the entire jury completely respects her fierce and tactical game style and will be voting for her to win if she is in the final two. The intimidator can be seen as wishy-washy at times if they are unable to maintain their style at all times. Despite her backstabbing ways, Vanessa has a way to turn herself into the victim in every situation. She has had multiple breakdowns in the house, to the point where fans have nicknamed her “Crynessa”. She definitely does not want her image to be seen as “wishy washy”, but that is what happens when she goes from ruthless and volatile to inconsolable at times. Steve is a 22 year old college student and he has taken the role of the supplicator. For most of the summer, Steve has played Vanessa’s game, doing everything she has told him to do. He has been her puppy dog and follows her around everywhere. He depends on Vanessa and needs her for assistance when making decisions in the house. Fans have even made jokes that Vanessa is his mom and that he drinks breast milk from her. Steve definitely relies on Vanessa for her nurturance, but at the end of the day he is also scared and intimidated by her. He says he wants to vote her out at the final 3, but I wonder if he has the guts to do it. Liz is a 23 year Miami girl, and she has used the self-promoter strategy. Liz wants everyone to know how beautiful and smart she is. She constantly calls herself the prettiest girl in the house and how she has the best body compared to the other female contestants. She has bragged about her SAT scores on the live feeds and she constantly talks about all her wild adventures, thinking that she is superior to everyone else. She has even made lots of negative and condensing comments to various houseguests behind their backs. Self-promoters fear being seen as conceited and fraudulent and that is exactly how Liz is being portrayed to the fans. Fans have called her narcissistic and self-centered. There is a reason why Liz is the 2nd most hated houseguests of the summer. We only know how these people are in the house, not in the real world, so it’s possible that these strategies could be just for show and not who they really are.…...

... On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks (the "mother of the Civil Rights Movement") refused to get up out of her seat on a public bus to make room for a white passenger. Parks was arrested, tried, and convicted for disorderly conduct and violating a local ordinance. After word of this incident reached the black community, 50 African- American leaders gathered and organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott to protest the segregation of blacks and whites on public buses. With the support of most of Montgomery's 50,000 blacks, the boycott lasted for 381 days until the local laws segregating African-Americans and whites on public buses was lifted. Ninety percent of African Americans in Montgomery took part in the boycotts, which reduced bus revenue by 80%. A federal court ordered Montgomery's buses desegregated in November 1956, and the boycott ended in triumph. A young Baptist minister named Martin Luther King, Jr., was president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, the organization that directed the boycott. The protest made King a national figure. A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1957), serving as its first president. His efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. 1960’s Martin Luther King Jr March on Washington Martin......

...Angela Vicario, even though they aren’t the main people of the story they still are part of my explanation to how does magic realism play a part in narration. Last is the mysterious narrator whose name is a mystery. A perfect word to describe magic realism is make-up because it hides the truth. Make- up is a mask for women so that they can wear; it can make them feel good about themselves, but once the mask is off where is the real treasure at? Santiago Nasar is an Arab man supposable handsome and wealthy. Sure we read about him but his character never appeared in the first place. All the audience gets is to nibble on small information and never got to eat the big cheese. He is the make-up because we never got to physically know him and we only get our images about him through other people’s perspectives. For example, in the opening his mother is talking to the narrator and she tells him about her son’s crazy dreams. His dream was what foretold his death? I don’t think so because it seemed like it was just thrown in there, but at the same time it wasn’t. The dreams aren’t significant, but the point of it is. A dream can sometimes be real or at least we think so. The point of it is too ask yourself why he had those dreams. So this is where I move on to Angela Vicario. Angela Vicario was a women who was about to get married to a man that she didn’t want to marry in the first place. After she gets married something horrible happened to her husband Bayardo San Roman; he......

...is a centerpiece of President Barack Obama's plans to reduce the pollution linked to global warming, a step that the administration hopes will get other countries to act when negotiations on a new international treaty resume next year. Despite concluding in 2009 that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare, a finding that triggered their regulation under the 1970 Clean Air Act, it has taken years for the administration to take on the nation's fleet of power plants. In December 2010, the Obama administration announced a "modest pace" for setting greenhouse gas standards for power plants, setting a May 2012 deadline. Obama put them on the fast track last summer when he announced his climate action plan and a renewed commitment to climate change after the issue went dormant during his re-election campaign. "The purpose of this rule is to really close the loophole on carbon pollution, reduce emissions as we've done with lead, arsenic and mercury and improve the health of the American people and unleash a new economic opportunity," said Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, which has drafted a plan that informed the EPA proposal. Yet the rule carries significant political and legal risks, by further diminishing coal's role in producing U.S. electricity and offering options for pollution reductions far afield from the power plant, such as increased efficiency. Once the dominant source of energy in the U.S., coal now supplies just under......

...HIS/145 David Klein 03/03/12 The struggle for civil rights had defined the ‘60s ever since four black students sat down at a whites-only lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, in February 1960 and refused to leave (History.com). Several sources state that the act of the four students began the civil rights movement in 1960. Throughout the 1960’s the media constantly showed the struggle the obstacles the southern states were going through. Thousands of colored people were soaked and overcome with the power of the water hose that firemen use to get them out of the street from the non-violent protest. In 1961, the Freedom Riders began trips to the southern states from Washington D.C. to test the Supreme Court ruling to segregate public transportation. The Freedom Riders had numerous trials and tribulations during that journey. The riders consisted of black, white, young, and old with each person hoping everyone could be equal. The riders learned the non-violent movement from Dr. Martin Luther King from the bus boycott movement. The Freedom riders experienced horrible mob violence outside Anniston Alabama in 1961 with a firebomb being thrown on their bus and causing them to flee and face the mob. The riders were imprisoned wrongly and while in jail continued to fight for their freedom until late 1961 when Kennedy banned segregation at all public interstate facilities. During the entire time the media displayed and covered each and every move displaying......

...THE INJUSTICE DONE MY MOTHER by José Rizal   Some days after my return to Kalamba, my parents decided that I should remain, and that later I should go to Manila. I wanted to study with a teacher of the town, even though I could learn no more than multiplication, so I entered the village school.    At this time, an uncle of mine, Don José Alberto, returned from Europe. He found that, during his absence, his wife had left his home and abandoned her children. The poor man anxiously sought his wife and, at my mother's earnest request, he took her back. They went to live in Biñan. Only a few days later the ungrateful woman plotted with a Guardia Civil officer who was a friend of ours. She accused her husband of poisoning her and charged that my mother was an accomplice. On this charge, the alcalde sent my mother to prison.    I do not like to tell of the deep grief which we all, nine sisters and brothers, felt. Our mother's arrest, we knew, was unjust. The men who arrested her pretended to be friends and had often been our guests. Ever since then, child though I was, I have distrusted friendship. We learned later that our mother, away from us all and along in years, was ill. From the first, the alcalde believed the accusation. He was unfair in every way and treated my mother rudely, even brutally. Finally, he persuaded her to confess to what they wised by promising to set her free and to let her see her children. What mother could resist that? What mother would not......

...the shop and stated that he would like to purchase the golf clubs the contract had not been formed, because the shopkeeper is well within his rights to refuse the customer, even though the shopkeeper had the product in the window for purchase. This would not be the case if the product in the window had been labelled as an offer, in which case the customer could then enter the shop and agree to the offer. So, the golf clubs in the window was merely a willingness to negotiate. The same can be said for the legal case Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain vs Boots the Chemists (1952). This is a case where determining the point of the “sale” was crucial. In this case it was determined that the goods on display within the pharmacy were a willingness to negotiate and not an offer, and there was only acceptance when the customer took the product to the register to pay and the pharmacist then agreed to sell that product to the customer. Because of laws that require listed poisons to be supervised by a registered pharmacist, that sale could be refused at the pharmacist’s discretion. 2. a) A restrictive covenant is something that can prohibit certain actions should a person want to withdraw from an agreement. And it must be considered to be reasonable in order for it to be up held in court. In the case of Tom and ABC Motors it has stated in his contract that he cannot work for any other car company for 5 years. The courts would rule that this is unfair because it is too broad of a...

One of the Times when Donny’s mom went over to Cal’s house She heard loud music playing. “Once it was The Who, which Daisy had recognized from the time Donny had borrowed the album”(5). Cal had given Donny a record that he had obviously played enough times for Daisy to know it’s name. He is sharing music tastes that Donny hadn’t previously had. Making more and more of an impact on his life further securing his position with Donny. Not to mention the fact that Donny even began to use phrases Cal likely said himself. “‘You’re just feeling competitive’ he said ‘And controlling’”(5). Donny would never say that to his mom before cal. Not to say he didn’t back talk, but competitive and controlling were words that did not match his personality or way of speaking. They had to come from an outside force. Somebody that had enough of an influence on him to entirely change his manner of speaking. He feels good when he repeats these things that Cal says because it makes him feel more like the very person that is ‘helping’ him. He knows he can’t get in trouble for saying these things because Cal said these to him so how could anybody be mad at him for just reiterating what his tutor said? ...human resources, but the societal problems in particular ,in the poverty stricken sub-Saharan Africa, has not made this possible. Other problems in the African society include that of education, employment, health, food and some others that could be affecting the national growth. No doubt, Nigeria is a highly populated country, and Onweh (2007) in his study established the fact that about half of the children‟s population completes the primary education. He further said that 81% of the relevant school age groups got enrolled into various educational institutions at different levels, but 69% managed to graduate. According to Onweh , secondary education in Nigeria grew at 10% yearly during the 1990s but access to it experienced great constraints due to complex admission processes and bottle necks created by administrative directives. Technical education then was neglected by the government. Higher education enrollment was so poor to the extent that 4% of the relevant age showed interest. This revealed the background to the problems encountered by Nigerian education and which are still lingering. Onweh further reiterated in his comparative study on the educational enrolment of places like South Africa which stood at 17%, India had 17%, Indonesia recorded 11%, and Brazil was not too lagging behind with its 12% stance. Nigeria was really found wanting compared to the points of the entries into the various educational systems of these afore mentioned countries. The......

...Most Significant Events Casey Turner HIS/135 11/20/2011 I am writing this paper to reveal and describe different events that have occured over the past 50 years that have had a direct impact on the United States and affected the way we all live today. There are many economical, social, and political events that have helped shaped not only our country, but many other nations around the world as well. This paper is an attempt to reveal and speculate on some of these important events. 1950’s A growing amount of American people began to speak out about inequality and injustice during the 1950’s and the Rosa Parks bus incident is a perfect example. On December 1, 1955, a 42 year old African American woman who worked as a seamstress named Rosa Parks boarded a Montgomery, Alabama city bus to go home from work. On that bus that day, Rosa Parks started a new era in the American quest for equal rights (Rosa Parks Bus, 2002). Parks sat toward the middle of the bus, right behind the 10 seats that were reserved for white people. The bus ended up getting completely filled up and when a white man that entered the bus did not have a seat, the driver tried to make the four blacks sitting just behind the white section give up their seats so that the white man could sit down. Mrs. Park’s who was already a NAACP activist, quietly refused to do so. For disobeying the bus driver’s orders and not giving up her seat to the white man, she was arrested and convicted of violating......
