I Wrote This When I Was Young, so Don't Judge Me

...appeared on our door. Naturally, I ran to a small hole just big enough for me that my father had dug and covered the top with a blanket. I did this for protection against bad people. But it wasn’t anybody! So, I waited and waited. Plantation owners were known to play tricks on us. But what had happened was so much more. My friend Husha from church called my name. I perked my head up- to make sure that it wasn’t a trick. When I was reassured, I walked up to her and greeted her. She came with exciting news! We had a chance to escape our ratchet prison cell if we followed a brave girl who was known to help runaway slaves get to freedom in the north. Her name was Moses. As far as I knew Moses was a boy and I had a gut feeling to say no, but, my golly! A chance to escape, count me in! We were grateful for this offer- but we needed time to think about it. What if we got caught? I talked about it to my daddy and we got into a lot of discussions. Finally, he said yes. Looking back- I don’t know where I would be right now if he had said no to me that day. I surely would still be picking cotton from dawn to dusk and work at hard labor. We left right on the strike of twelve. It was a cold winter night and we had no protection against the breeze. Moses was a young 27 year old girl who had a ton o’ energy left in her. She carried a gun, in case we get attacked by others. After a long walk which felt like almost all eternity, we stopped for a small break. My legs felt like blubber, and......

Summary of the Taste of Watermelon

...Taste of Watermelon is written by Borden Deal. Taste of Watermelon is written in the year of 1979. It is a short story. He is an American author who is dead! He has been dead 25 years. The Taste of Watermelon is set in the country side where a bunch of farmers live. It is set in the states because of the language used. For example ‘golly’ and ‘gosh’. It is set in around the 1970s, the time it was written in. There are 4 main characters I would say. There is Mr. Will who is an old man who is a farmer and every night he guards his huge watermelon with a gun. Then there is a boy who steals the watermelon and eats it up with his friends. He then after he steals it feels really bad and collects the seeds from the floor and gives them to Mr. Wills The story is basically about a boy who steals the watermelon from Mr. Wills and together with his friends; Freddy, Gary, and J.D., they eat as much as they can of the watermelon and destroy whatever is left. The boy goes home and watches Mr. Wills as he realizes that his watermelon has been stolen. He freaks out and starts destroying all the other watermelons and the boy after a night of not sleeping together with his dad collects all the seeds he could find and gives them to Mr. Wills to plant a field of watermelons for the following year. Mr. wills accepts his apology and is pleased to hear that the boy would love to help Mr. Wills in planting all these seeds. Mr. Wills is happy . The author uses 1st person. I personally......

Blues and Rock and Roll

...guitar as its main solo instrument, and in some of the live versions that are out there a drum accompanies the song as a steady rhythm in the background. This is known as a backbeat that generally occurs on the first and third beats of a four-beat measure. B.B King uses guitar improvisation in between each of the vocal verses to lead him into his next verse. Another twelve-bar improvisation is located between the verses. “Every day I Have the Blues” features bent notes that are achieved by literally bending the string on the guitar with excess finger pressure. “Good Golly Miss Molly” by Little Richard starts off with the same twelve-bar chord progression that was developed for the Blues. Instead of a guitar as the main solo instrument Little Richard uses a piano as his primary instrument. The guitars serve in accompaniment to the piano and a stead backbeat made by a drum is featured. The tempo of “Good Golly Miss Molly” is much faster than that of “Every Day I have the Blues”. The volume of the voices and instruments are much louder and the piano is played throughout all the singing instead of being used as an improvisation to lead into the next verse. The blues was primarily a vocal genre that developed with in the African American slave culture in the southern United States. The singers of the blues often focused on the hardships of life. Blues can be viewed as United States Folk music. The blues was known for its use of a repeating chord progression called a......

Overweight Cousin

...have finally arrived at his kingdom, I've noticed how much he likes to aggrandize his fridge with rations that's more than enough for eight starving men. I insisted that he lay off the calories, however he infers that he needs the bloody nutrients. I tried to remonstrate my position by trying to educate him. His manner was erudite but he acts extraordinary sleazy which contradicts with his reasoning. By mid-afternoon, the aura in the skies was delightful, as we set out to joust to the death. The peasants around the court was affable as we began our seemingly friendly game. During the middle of our duel, my cousin pleaded to stop as he was growing hungry as the Queen did, during her pregnancy. As the kind champ that I was, I said “good golly, sir are you mad!?” He laughed, tumbled on all fours, and right into the Renaissance Cafe! I pursuit him on my faithful steed, hoping to avoid a cause of an uproar of any sort, and as well as to purchase my cup of tea along with some exquisite buttered crackers. As I stepped into the tavern, I witness the most horrific and grotesque image in front of my very eyes. What was in my cousin's arms could scar hundreds of unborn infants. It was as seems to be a contraband of snacks and sweets, carried by robbers from a bank. I halt him with each step he took, and explained how amorphous his shape will be if he continue to practice this dreadful feasting habit of his. The more persistent I was, the more resilient he became. As I am not his......

SH: You are in the teaching profession, severely introverted but with a tremendous almost psychotic sense of narcissism not unlike that possessed by the late Professor Moriarty. You play the piano, are a part time actor, are possibly constrained by reduced mental capacity even insanity. SC: I am usually bad at this but are you practicing whimsy? Humorous, Mr.Holmes. SH: Dear God, what was that? I have rarely seen such a face aside from that loathsome hound I encountered due to that villain, Stapleton. No. I do not indulge in whimsy; it is destructive to the faculties. SC: Oh golly. Have I brought back the wrong 19th century Holmes? Drat Leonard’s miscalculations. SH : You have chalk on your face, your fingers have seen considerable wear and tear, as might be expected by one striking piano keys repeatedly, the costumes in the corner indicate your acting profession, the picture books on the desk your mental capacity, your speech patterns and agitation indicate introversion, insanity and your introduction to me, obviously, your extreme narcissism. SC: Easily explained. The chalk comes from my black-board work on interstellar travel, the fingers from playing Halo, the costumes are for comic-con, the “picture books” are the greatest art works in human history, including “Flash of two worlds”, I’ll blame the narcissism comment on teleportation-lag and I’m not insane, my mother had me......

Greed to Giving

...million is less than a third of his $422 million payoff. That kind of reasoning, however, misses the mark. Few of us give away even 10 percent, and if our income increases, the tendency is not to share more but to buy more, to hoard more. Not Thompson. After finishing with his employees, he plans to continue giving away much of what’s left of the $422 million. 9I suspect he is on to something. In a society where success tends to be measured in what we can acquire, this guy instead is preaching and practicing the opposite. Success, he is telling us, is in the giving back. He seems to have mastered what many of us have yet to understand: the difference between need and want, between the basic essentials and our inchoate desires. He has, by golly, defined enough. Maybe that’s all the wealth he needs....

Grade vs Gaining Knowledge

...at the expense of individual thinking. In short, Japan was infected with Ophelia Syndrome at a national level. Almost everyone had to rely on someone else someone above them to tell them how to think, what to think, and how to act on that knowledge. An individual love of learning, combined with the ability to think as an individual didn’t exist in the Japanese system. Learning was simply a cultural expectation, and perfectly emulating the teacher was considered to be the epitome of learning. It is a weakness that cost them the war, as well as continues to inhibit their growth in modern times. Now, let’s see what is happening in America today. Educators want a number attached to every single piece of information students “learn,” ‘cause by golly, if it’s not a number it’s not data, and if it’s not data we don’t want it ‘cause how in the heck are we going to know if our students are smarter than other countries students if we can’t compare numbers! Educators want it known that we have the best students and educators in the world! Society demands action, because action will get something done, and want higher numbers than anyone else, and society wants it now! So sit down, , and pass your test, dang it!! Some have chosen homeschool in our society to stay away from the number game. Americas are following this same path of focusing on facts and figures and expecting students to simply regurgitate what they are taught. Rather than encourage learning, this drives students to not......

Taste of Watermelon

...the best ones only for him. Or through description, direct characterization, such as shown in this statement: “Mr. Wills was a big man. He had bright, fierce eyes under heavy brows and when he looked down at you, you just withered”. The narrator wants to steal the best watermelon in order to challenge himself, for approval and integration, and to conquer Willadean, a slim and tall girl of which everyone is in love with. She is described in a direct and indirect way, by description and retelling. The story has a direct type of opening due to setting and situation details are described in the beginning. Setting takes place in the countryside, where a bunch of farmers live. It is set in the states because of the language used. For example ‘golly’ and ‘gosh’. It is set in around the 1970s, the time it was written in. We could divide the passage from page 316 according to the difference in content between the first part, in which the narrator describes through dialog and retelling what is happening, and the second part in which, among other things, he shows his feelings and opinion towards the events. The first part could be from the beginning of the passage until the moment the narrator starts to give his point of view of what happened, until "… They got it away, and now it's gone.” Which is all shown with literal language The narrative methods could be either direct, by retelling and description of actions and events, such as shown in this statement “Then I saw; he was......

Robert Johnson is a legend, known as a figure in defining the foundation of the birth of Blues. His blues style was also very influential in the shaping of Rock and Roll. Before his young death at the young age of 27, he only ever recorded 29 of his compositions, which is very little material in comparison to other legends. His songs were seen as remarkable and inspiring since his music had a shockingly raw feel for the era. “Cross Road Blues” is in the blues genre, more specifically the Delta blues style. The song gives life to the legend of Robert Johnson who supposedly met the Devil at a crossroads outside of town and sold his sole in return for the Devil to tune his guitar and give him the talent to become a great musician. The song represents the blues genre of the era from the spiritual and religious roots, however, rather than using the usual saxophone as the lead instrument in a jazz song, he played the acoustic guitar. Woody Guthrie’s “This......

The Scoop on Zika

...postponed around the world in order to attempt to control the infectious spread of the flu. Much like today, if we try these preventative measures, they will more than likely fail, as history shows us. However, in an article I recently read in the NY times, Tavernise talks about how she thinks that the United States best defense against the virus is air-conditioning and window screens. The screens and air-conditioning block rapid virus transmission by keeping the healthy mosquitoes from biting people that are infected and spreading the virus. I don’t think quarantining people who show signs or symptoms of the virus would help with the transmission of the virus. It’s like lent, when you tell Catholics they can’t have fish on Friday’s, by golly they’re going to want a big ol’ juicy cheeseburger, much like if you tell people with these common flu-like signs and symptoms to stay in doors or stay in a hospital, they’re going to much rather want to get on with their everyday lives outside of the house or hospital and virtually it won’t stop disease transmission. In conclusion, I have high hopes that we will not have a big outbreak of the virus, however, the upcoming spring/ summer is where you will see the biggest amount of concern and quarantining people will not virtually help the situation. Don’t let history repeat itself. May the odds be ever in your favor. World Health Organization. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Feb. 2016. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.......

Popular Music of the 20th and 21st Century

...Stage. His well known works include “Fifty Million Frenchmen”, “Can-Can”, “Anything Goes”. But his most successful musical was “Kiss Me, Kate”. Irving Berlin was responsible for over 3000 songs including the beloved song “God Bless America”, “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, and “White Christmas”. He also composed the musical “Annie Get Your Gun”. Richard Rodgers was responsible for “Oklahoma”, “South Pacific”, and “The Sound of Music” along with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Early rock and roll became the craze in the 1950’s with a rhythmic accompaniment called rhythm and blues. Little Richard and Chuck Berry were the driving sounds behind these early beginnings. Little Richard gave us great tunes like “Tutti Frutti”, “Long Tall Sally”, and “Good Golly, Miss Molly”. Chuck Berry was responsible for “fast songs with an irresistible beat” (Yudkin, 2010). Billy Haley and the Comets got us really swinging in 1955 with “Rock Around the Clock”. Along with Bill Haley & the Comets, teenagers were rocking to the sounds of Elvis Pressley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly. In 1958, the Elvis fans were shocked when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He used leaves during his army career to keep up with the music career as much as possible. He was discharged from the army in March of 1960. He resumed his very successful career and gave us many more tunes such as “It’s Now or Never”, “Are you Lonesome Tonight?”, “In the Ghetto”, and “Kentucky Rain”. On August 16, 1977, Elvis Pressley, the King of......
