Gender Reflection paper “Gender is socially learned and reinforced characteristics that include one's biological sex and psychological characteristics.” (Beebe, Beebe and Redmond, 2008). I was raised to be a girly girl, hair always nice and nails done. I didn’t climb trees, I didn’t get dirty, I didn’t fight boys, I never learned to roller-skate because I didn’t want to fall and get dirty. I went to sleep over’s and to dance parties with my girl friends. Frankly, I was basically scared of becoming a tomboy through about eighth grade. I was afraid of the smallest possibility of rejection or by being teased by the girls or the boy’s. The book says that gender refers to psychological and emotional characteristics that cause people to assume masculine, feminine, or androgynous roles (Beebe, Beebe, Redmond,2008). This to me seems very interesting as if gender is more that what you are born as (male or female). This made me start thinking and evaluating myself even more. This process is called social decentering. Social decentering is the “cognitive processes in which you take into account the other person's thoughts, feelings, values, background, and perspectives.” (Beebe, Beebe, Redmond,2008) At times I can relate to the masculine set of rules and descriptions of their gender. I know that I am a very hard worker and don’t mind being the bread winner of the household. I even like coming home to a clean house and the dinner being cooked and ready. As per our text book we tend to be a masculine culture and “tend to value more traditional roles for both men and women.” (Beebe, Beebe and Redmond, 2008). I am guilty of stereotyping household duties in my household as masculine or feminine. For example taking out the garbage or changing the oil in my truck is a man’s job and cleaning the toilet or cleaning out the refrigerator is a females. I believe this was instilled…...

...Langford, W. (1997), “But he said he loved me” in “GENDER” (Jackson et al 2004) is the writing I will review in this section. Langford’s (Jackson et al 2004) study “But he said he loved me” was formulated with findings from fifteen in-depth interviews of women who are in a relationships. Langford argued that in the beginning of a relationship men are supportive and caring towards their partners but as the relationship progresses and gets older with the passage of time, men begin to distance themselves from their partners. The duty to protect mutual intimacy fell on women by default. As the relationship progressed it moved away from the aspects of love and caring more towards the fulfilment of physical needs of men. A complex genetic code determines body type; but that type does not always dictate sexual identity. In the book Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944: 94-95), Horkheimer and Adorno argued that the mass culture in capitalist society can be treated as an ideology factory which producing the standardized cultural products, such as magazines, radios, films and so on. Because of legislation that has been passed, companies are now required to follow hiring practices that are supposed to eliminate most discrimination. When posting a new job announcement, some companies will manipulate the wording in the announcement so that only a specific individual can qualify for that job. Because of the internet and information being solicited employers can find out any information about a potential candidate without even speaking to him or her.
