Functional Area of Business Paper

...Functional Areas of Business Paper MGT/521 A Master’s of Business Administration or (MBA) concentrates on the development in business administration. As a leader, I must become proficient in the functional areas of business and find ways to communicate information to managers for effective leadership and overall success of the business. Some organizations may consider other, if not all of the functions of business to be important. This paper will summarize the two of functional areas: Leadership and Strategic Planning and the importance of how this relates to the role of a manager. Leadership Leadership is earned. It is not granted by role or rite of passage. Once achieved, leadership is not sustainable without continuous proof of concept (Sederer, 2012). The author touched on a great point, I think it’s often misunderstood, the assumption that - just because one may hold the role of manager that automatically designates them a leader. (Robbins and Coulter, 2012) Strategic leadership is the ability to anticipate, envision, maintain flexibility, think strategically and work with others in the organization to initiate changes that will create a viable and valuable future for the organization. Leadership comes with an unsurmountable amount of task and responsibilities, catering to different forms of leadership is one of them, while still accomplishing the company’s goals. Strategic Planning Strategic......

Another view of what a manager is taken from A. Pocztowski, also cited in Cieslinska’s article suggest that managers are charged with “the art of reaching goals by proper using the finance, material and human resources” (Cieslinska 2007). Sometimes they act as a “go-between” for employees and the upper management, they make sure that tasks are complete, and they also have obligations in the functional areas of the organization. This paper will discuss the role of managers within the functional areas of a business. Functional Areas of a Business and the Managers Role In a large company or organization, there will be several different departments, each having its own specific task or job to perform. These tasks or jobs are called the “function” of that particular department. According to the Business Dictionary, functional area is defined as “grouping of individuals on the basis of the function each performs in the organization, such as accounting, marketing, and manufacturing; or grouping of activities or......

He categorized them into 3 roles – interpersonal roles, informational roles, and decisional roles (Robbins and Coulter, 2012). A manager plays these roles at varying degrees depending on the situations that arise. ...Functional Areas of Business Paper XXXXX MGT/521 June 8, 2015 Professor XXXX Functional Areas of Business Paper Understanding the importance of managers in today’s corporate world is crucial for an individual with a special interest in business management practices, especially if pursuing a Masters of Business Administration. According to Robbins and Coulter (2012), managers are important for three main reasons: organizations need their skills, they get things done, and they do matter. The responsibility of a manager is to coordinate and oversee that others are doing their work so that the goals of an organization can be accomplished (Robbins and Coulter, 2012), and to “ensure business success” (University of Phoenix, 2012). The manager’s efficiency and effectiveness when leading and overseeing the tasks needed to accomplish the organization’s goals will reflect in the functional areas of business. Functions of Management There are four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. This functions approach is the most popular used today, and managers address them “regardless of the order in which these functions are performed” (Robbins and Coulter, 2012, p. 10). Managers use their leadership to influence and inspire employees, participate in strategic planning to create plans, and ensure the objectives are completed (University of Phoenix, 2012).
