First Born
When I was 19 I became pregnant with my first child. I was at work when I became sick. I went to the doctor the next day. They gave me two different types of pregnancy test and both came back positive. The moment the doctor walked in I knew that’s what she was going to tell me. In that moment my whole life changed. I did not know what was going to happen to me, my family, or my relationship. I was going to school and working full time, was I just supposed to stop all that for a kid? I went home to tell my boyfriend and soon after my parents. Travis took the news very well. He hoped for a boy as all males do, but secretly I wanted it to be a boy as well. Travis was very supportive in my decision to keep the baby and he promised to stay with me all the way. My parents loved the idea of having a grandbaby. They weren’t too fond of my age but they soon came over it. They began buying things for the baby even though we didn’t know the sex yet. It was such a great thing to see and feel all their support for me and Travis.
The day arrived for us to find out the sex and it was also Travis’ first time going to an ultrasound. The second we walked in Travis began to become uncomfortable and paced around the waiting room. The doctor called us back, and we sat there in that below freezing room with no means of escape. Here we are about to see our baby with no idea how we’re going to do this. The doctor placed the gel then the wand on my belly. She looked around a moment then up popped a picture of this tiny alien form. It hit Travis like a frat train. “That’s my baby!” was all he could say. The heart was pounding like a hammer, it was moving all around (though I couldn’t feel it yet), and here Travis stood unable to move or speak, just looking at the screen like it was going to do a flip. “Would you like to know the sex?” “Of course I do!” Travis half yelled. The doctor moved the wand around so we could get a better look and sure enough Travis starts yelling, I was sure he would pass out. “Thank God it’s a boy! Oh, it’s a boy! Thank you baby, thank you so much!” Travis takes off out the room and leaves me to adsorb this information alone. It’s a boy! Thank heavens, it’s a boy! My parents were so excited to have a little baby grandson, my dad a little more than my mom. She wanted a girl so she could by dresses.
I wasn’t really sick with my pregnancy as much as I thought I might be. It was really bad the first few weeks then slaked way off. I was 2 weeks away from my due date when I was ordered to bed rest. Then I became sick. Cramps, throwing up anything I ate, and cold sweats. Travis took me to Mission Hospital. Upon arrival they put me right into a room and soon wires and tubes were coming out of my arms. Things were on my stomach monitoring the baby and his heart beat. They said he was fine but my body is overreacting and wanting the baby out. They took me for an emergency C-section. Looking up at the ceiling in the operating room was the scariest moment in my life. I was afraid he wouldn’t be fine or I wouldn’t be okay. Something was going to happen and it would be bad. Then it happened, a glorious sound covered my ears. A sound I will never forget, the first cry of my baby boy. An amazing sound that I help create. Travis held my hand while I cried. The doctor handed Travis a small blue blanket and he began to cry as well. He lend over so I could see my beautiful baby boy for the first time. His small hands like a baby doll and his face was his daddy made over. Jet black hair, solid crystal eyes, and a smile cute enough to melt your heart. That was my baby, my little Aaron Jacob Hensley.…...

A Star Is Born

...A Star is Born Stars are quite possibly the oldest, molecule possessing organism in the vast universe that harbors all infinite existence. The oldest star discovered is an estimated 13.2 billion years old (Stetson). How stars have come to exist was once as unknown as what they are comprised of. To find out how this cosmic, infinite universe came into existence, astronomers must first bring everything down to a more basic, molecular, atomic level. A star’s life is started as a collapsing cloud of hydrogen; helium and some other elements are pulled inwards by its own gravity, forming a core. Through nuclear fusion, most of the hydrogen is converted into helium and this is what keeps the star constantly burning for billions and billions of years. A star’s internal pressure is what keeps it from collapsing under its own massive gravity. However, if a star becomes too massive, and the internal pressure can no longer support itself, the star will collapse, receding into a black hole. Until recently, astronomers had observed that there were young stars in the universe, but had never quite exactly understood how they entered into our realm of existence, until now. The Herschel space telescope was launched on May 14, 2009 and is the largest, post powerful infrared telescope in space, to our knowledge. In 2010, Herschel made two unrelated discoveries that were equally as astounding to astronomers. The first challenged our previous beliefs about star birth and the second provided a......

Born or Not to Born in Dragon Years

...population explosion might happen. According to several experts, this rage is likely to result in a gloomy picture, though. First of all, that people think children are born this year are lucky purely originates from the unfounded belief, without any empirical research. Second, as they grow up, ready to take the entrance exams and seeking for jobs, competition between babies of this year escalates ceaselessly. The higher unemployment rate on the horizon is imminent, let alone probably an increased crime rate and the shortage of housing. Perhaps, to people working in the real estate, this could be a positive signal, as a result of the fact that the demand for housing during that epoch is on the climb, pushing the price to the rocket and greatly benefiting them while their parents who dedicate their lives to buying houses for their dragon-year-born children are dissatisfied. Put in this context, little kids and then dragon adults are, instead of enjoying a life of a dragon as claimed, working laboriously to be able to find a lucrative job and then purchase a house. Others subscribe to the mindset that owing to the fact that dragons are unreal animals, kids are supposed to be impractical, living a life of everything in between, barely possible to adapt to the harsh realities and ending up in rags, unfortunately. Too, in case of numerous females or males being born in this year, the matter of marriage imbalance, again, crops up, driving their parents and themselves nuts. On......

Born Again

...Born Again The short story “Born Again” was written by Anne Billson. It was written in 1993. It is a postmodern story. Postmodernism is a term that describes the movement in arts, literature, culture, etc., that was an extension of modernism. Postmodernism involved the break with the norms and ideals of the modernism. In postmodernism you often include the perception of common truths. Postmodernism is a very hard term to define, since it is so abstract. Born Again is a story filled with action. It is filled with violence, but in the same way it is kind of ironic and satirical. Born Again is a story about a woman named Nancy Loughlin, who lives and works in the city of London. She is very career-minded. It seems like/that she has a very important position in an international firm of some sort. The reason you could think it is international, is because of her appointment with “the Belgians”. She is a single woman and it does not appear that she has any family. She is very fixated about her health. She does not allow her self to do drugs, have sex, and smoke cigarettes or anything related. The introduction however, implies that she might have a past that involved these vices. Even though she cares about her health, she still allows her self a glass of wine, and her urge of the famous Fudge Tub is very excessive. In the text Nancy is pregnant, but she has not been sleeping with anyone for some years. She then gets in trouble with a quite extreme Christian organisation...

...Associate Program Material Cell Energy Worksheet Answer the following questions: Cellular respiration: What is cellular respiration and what are its three stages? 1) Glycolysis: the cytoplasm 2) Krebs Cycle/The Citric Acid Cycle: mitochondria 3) Electron Transport Chain: the mitochondria What is the role of glycolysis? Include the reactants and the products. Where does it occur? Glycolysis splits the glucose molecule into two pyruvic acid molecules. The Reactants going into the process are Glucose, NAD+ (and ATP to start the reaction). The products are 2 pyruvic acid molecules NADH and a net gain of 2 ATP (2 used 4 produced). This reaction occurs in the cytoplasm and is also considered the first step in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. What is the role of the citric acid cycle? Include the reactants and the products. Where does it occur? Each of the pyruvic acid molecules will be processed in two separate citric acid cycles. Here the three carbon pyruvic acid molecule is processed to produce ATP and Carbon Dioxide molecules. This Cycle uses ATP to specifically break down the pyruvate into Acetyl Co-A. Once this goes through the cycle, limited ATP as well as more NADH are produced. This happens in the mitochondria when sufficient oxygen is present to form the Carbon Dioxide. What is the role of the electron transport system? Include the reactants and the products. Where does it occur? The role of the......

Born Into Brothels

...Documentary Film “Born Into Brothels” Response Essay Academy award winner “Born Into Brothels” (2004) directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kaufmann takes place in Calcutta’s Sonagachi Red Light District in India. The film starts with a close up shot of a young girl’s face. All throughout the beginning, lots of transitions are used by the editor. The scenes switch back and fourth of the busy street where women line up to sell themselves for money, then the focus is on the children’s face again. The innocence shows in their eyes, but they already know what happens behind closed doors, and they know soon it’s their turn to “join the line”. The scenes are filled with still images of the residents of the Red Light District. The film depicts a hard life for these women and their children. It saddens me deeply that this is the fate of many girls in impoverished countries. Without help many of these precious children will be prostituting themselves soon, because they are forced by their ignorant parents and their poverty. What a clever way to make this film! To live with them and form a friendship during the filming process, and to help these children to not end up like their mothers did. A lot of b-roll footage and the children’s photos are shown throughout the film. The camera follows the children around in a Cinema verite fashion to capture the action. The footage is shaky but the content of the film is so powerful it doesn’t matter. The film has the feel of a home......

Criminals Are Born as Such

...Criminals are born as such. Discuss: Five year old girl abducted, raped and murdered. It is headlines like this that often make newspaper headlines. When reading a headline such as this the question is often asked ‘How could a human being be capable of doing such a thing to another human being? Another headline may read ‘what led young people to riot?’ in reference to normal young people who took to the streets of London and broke into shops and set fire to pubs. There are many theories as to why people commit crimes. Are these crimes due to inherited predispositions? Are they a response to the strain of disjunction between goals and the means of achieving? Is this because they were written off as delinquents at school? Are these crimes a result of being labelled a murderer or a hooligan? Is the inequality in the capitalist world responsible for these people’s actions? This essay will look at biological, physiological and sociological perspectives to consider why people commit crimes. Deviance can be defined as behaviour that differs from the normal and is subjected to public disapproval. What is labelled as deviant is relative and will clearly differ between cultures. Similarly what is seen as deviant behaviour changes over time, it was once deviant to bear a child out of wed lock but over time it is now considered to be the norm. Lastly deviance is subjective depending on location for example it would be considered to be deviant to chant, shout and walk around topless at...

Born to Be Genius

...Introduction Human infants are genius. That necessarily doesn’t mean that every child can paint like Piacasso, compose like Yanni , or score 9 on an IELTS test. Instead it means every child is born with qualities that are included in a genius. Curiosity, spontaneity, liveliness, and wonder are some of the qualities inherited by every single human infant. The structure of the brain of a baby is different from that of an adult and has twice as many brain connections as an adult. Babies are capable of formulating their own native language, which involves usage of different symbols, without any formal assistance. Creativity, sensitivity and imaginations are some of the key extracts of a child’s personality. These youthful traits are highly valued from an evolutionary perspective: the more species evolve, the more they carry youthful traits into adulthood (a process called "neotony" or "holding youth"). It is imperative that we, as educators and parents, help preserve these genius characteristics of children as they mature into adulthood, so those capacities can be made available to the broader culture at a time of incredible change. Language is defined as “Any code employing signs, symbols, or gestures used for communicating ideas meaningfully between human beings”. There are three language acquisition theories by Skinner (Behavioristic) Infant learn by imitation and have no prior knowledge of language, Chomsky (Nativistic or psycholinguistic)Child is prewired for language......

Irony 'Born in the USA!' Born or Made

...say that leadership is a rare skill that not any one individual can obtain unless they are born with it. Can we put this old argument to rest and finalize a conclusion. Are great leaders born whiles others are made? Are Great leaders born? Whiles certain leadership skills can be taught other leadership traits cannot for example intellectual courage. You cannot teach someone intellectual courage, most born leaders are usually able to withstand a lot of negative comments, feedbacks and criticism and still be able to maintain the courage and will power to push forward with a goal. Born leaders are also definitely born with certain intangible gift. The trait theories and great man theories believe that people inherit certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership. As the words of (Cawthon, D L 1996, p.2) “to suggest that leaders do not enter the world with extraordinary endowment is to imply that people enter the world with equal abilities, with equal talents”. There are certain inborn characteristics that predispose people to be and become leaders. In the same way some people are born with amazing musical gifts and some are born with the gift of leadership. For example in the biblical days they had great men such as Moses, Abraham and David they were clear examples of born leaders and they possess a level of intellectual courage and in born traits that allowed them to lead withstanding the circumstances. ......
